I am in LOVE with the additions of Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. Sure, they appear as shadows or briefly towards the end in the original but the way they enter the castle during the Melting then gayly skip off afterwards, or how this scene is staged, god, it's perfection!
the staging of this song with protest signs and with the emerald city citizens is SO effective, it feels so much darker and real than the usual staging
Oh, they're not protest signs at all. They're actually signs that help Ozians show their appreciation to Dorothy and her friends, especially wishing them good luck on hunting down and eliminating the Wicked Witch of the West (i.e., Elphaba Thropp). Does that make sense to you?

I think part of it is this being right after No Good Deed and getting her offstage, but I could be wrong and it 100% works either way.
