Kristen will always be the best but I’m actually a fan of how Jenni Barber did it!! I think there’s something in her voice that’s so unique for the character! Her facials crack me up too 😂
I saw her on one or the National tours and she is one of my favorite Glindas--and she performed with my favorite Elphaba, Marcie Dodd. Incredible pair!
Jung Sun Ah matched with Kirsten Chenoweth's energy so well!!! I love these two iterations the most, they feel so authentic for me, like so bubbly, energetic, and smily that its infectious!! >
Out of everyone she honestly sold I to me the best. I'm not age shaming or anything, but Glinda and Elfaba are first year college students. She's a snobby barbie type from a wealthy family. She's ALMOST a bimbo, but shes smart enough to get her way. Jung Sun Ah is who really sold that to me. Like she knocked it out of the park- she really nailed every movement!
I love how the Brazilian performance ends with the audience member shrieking at 18:02, you can tell she loved the performance haha I think fabi bang's version is my favourite for the energy alone
Fabi Bang is amazing! I guess only Brazilians can catch all the layers in Fabi's performance. There is a version of popular from July 2023 (a non-official version) that is everything. If you want to have a look ua-cam.com/video/UY5jeLpe-Z8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=PortalFama
@@sorrynotsorry6there was another one of these in australia recently! I think you should find a video of it bc it was NEARLY acurate by the first musical 😅
Totally agreed. I regularly come and watch her performance. I guess that may be because my first broadway wicked Glinda cast was Ali? but shes the best too.
Megan Hilty’s voice is AMAZING. I don’t think non-singers realise how hard those transitions from belt to very breathy, high nasal singing are, and she makes it look EFFORTLESS
Once it got to her, I was reminded about how much I admire the gift that she was given. I've had decades of vocal training and was a working opera singer. She was born for singing in general, she would have been an amazing opera singer.
Fabi Bang (Brazil Glinda) managed to be more unhinged in the recent non-replica of Wicked from last year. From doing "Desafio da Cuca" towards the climax of the song, to several references to the then-recent _Barbie_ movie.
i don’t think anyone could ever beat kristen, i think she could still play that part perfectly to this day, the mannerisms and everything are just so perfect 🤣
Ali Mauzey is really good- her voice isn’t overly annoying and tinny, and she has a wonderful understanding of the comic personality of the character. very lovely to watch and listen to.
I once saw a theatre kids video on youtube where he said the reason they don't always cut the lace off wigs in theatre is cause they assume with the theatre lights on that people won't be able to see it in the crowd but if you're in the front few rows or there is going to be cameras recording the performance up close you can definitely tell so it's way better to just take the time to trim the lace off.
They're all great and it's nice to see how they each put their own spin on it (of course Kristin is a classic) but I really liked how Lucy Durack does "I know about popular" (9:28) because it's more...heartfelt? Like she's actually trying to reassure Elphaba since she knows she'll be feeling uneasy about all this. She also had my favorite "lar". 😂 ~:~
It’s interesting that Australia and the UK went completely different directions with the accents. The Australian Galindas put on an American accent, but the British Galindas have an exaggerated posh accent! Like, the UK production adapted the characterization so that Galinda’s accent was a local shorthand for understanding her wealthy background, which is cool and I don’t see done much in Broadway-to-West End transfers nowadays.
It's always interesting how differently characters can be portrayed and still be good each time. I think the different actresses/actors changing up the character is what keeps the show from getting boring if you were see them several times. Some people complain that it's different but I absolutely love it!
I think what Makes Kristin the best Galinda is she has always been a sensational comic actress. Others may sing it as well or possibly better, but the timing that Popular takes is everything and Kristin has it.
I love the Korean versions though I’m curious as to how it’s translated and what lyrics might be different in another language as compared to translating it one for one. Like in the Korean versions the “right now” instead of “instead of dreary who you were, well are”
The literal translation is “Popular, because of me you’ll be popular. Let’s make lots good (status) friends and some new slang. Let’s start as soon as possible ‘cause we’ve got a long road to go. Please don’t feel bad about my honest analysis and advice and just follow along. I’ve decided that I wanna be your friend. There’s no one like me anywhere. I major in popular, I minor in popular. I’ll make you forget your dark and dreary past right now! With my help, you’re now popular”
In songs the lyrics' syllables and how they fit into the melody is especially important in the Korean language because our pronunciation and writing system focuses a lot on splitting up syllables.(But in general lyric translations for performances can never be one on one accurate lol)Also it is common in korean musicals to incorporate new english lyrics into the translated versions for a smoother representation of the original!
@@dianason1428 How do you feel the korean translation sounded and came across? Super curious about other languages of musicals, and if they keep the spirit while still sounding right with the music and rhythm.
I love how Kim Bo Kyung shoves Elphaba onto the bed aggressively and how each of them have a different little la la la dance and all glindas are unhinged
I love "The Chenoweth Yodle" in "You're gonna be Pop-oolar". With every new Glinda, I secretly pray they stick the landing. Alas, there's only one Kristin.
It’s like Doritos. Obviously Doritos are great, but they’re also trash for us and are empty calories. I think there’s an analogy for Glee somewhere in there
I appreciate the different languages, but specifically hearing British Glinda breaks my brain 😂 I’m so used to her sounding like a stereotypical valley girl
I love how Jung Sun Ah in the Korean genuinely THROWS Elphaba aside on the bed after the personality dialysis bit. That and just the ones that really throw her around in general. Actually Kim Bo Kyung did it too maybe it's a Korean thing? I saw it and was looking for who did it that aggressively and realised it was seemingly just the Korean ones. Also when they really kind of yodel into the pop-YU-lar that some do really good while some don't really. I just remember noticing Ariana did that really well in the movie and now I really like that aspect.
Also I love Kristin Stewart's arm movement and poses, she's got her elbows out unnaturally and keeps kind of freezing like a posable doll, it makes it really clear how weird Glinda is which I love.
I think what makes Kristin’s so compelling and clear is her breath control and specific choices. This song is so challenging to sing and commit to and move with- so sometimes I think the labored breathing takes away from Glinda’s sense of security in herself. She’s preppy and flamboyant, yes- and she moves with grace and swiftness. All of these women are fantastic. And I do love to see, hear, and feel all of the different renditions of Glinda that introduce new layers/nuances/characteristics that audiences haven’t thought of before or expected. Excitement rises and falls so differently in each body, and this is one hell of a role!!! They’re fabulous. And Kristin originating the role for others to continue to flourish in it has created such a beautiful garden. So excited for the movie ❤️
I saw Wicked twice on Broadway: 2018 and 2021. I really liked the high-pitched hilarity of Glenda in the 2018 version. 2021 version wasn't bad. She just wasn't as outrageous.
I love this video!! As beautifully defined as Galinda was by the outstanding Kristin Chenoweth, it’s awesome to see how each actress put her own little spin to build on that! I saw Megan Hilty perform live with The Seattle Men’s Chorus and after each song she did, she did a little chuckle which endeared me to her. When I read she had played Galinda, I thought “Yeah, I can see how she’d be perfect in that role!”
Comparing the English and non-English versions, I never realized how American (or at least "Western") a lot of the humor is. Especially with gags like the "were-are/ler-lar" lines, I gotta wonder how they were able to translate the jokes. Regarless, they were all spectacular performances ^_^
"know the slang you've got to know" is all i need to hear to know whether i'll favor the performance. megan hilty, annaleigh ashford, lucy durack, louise dearman, lea michele all hit it the same as kristen does & don't fall flat or go up to falsetto. they each have something that makes their performances unique & their own, but the way they sing that line is so important to my enjoyment of the song.
My Top: 1. Annaleigh Ashford 2. Kristine Chenowith 3. Cecilia de la Cueva ( mexican Glinda/ my Country ) 4. Luci Scherer 5. Lucy Durack 6. Kara Lindsay 7. Fabi Bang

I was so confused when suddently hearing German that I even needed a moment to switch my brain back and understand her
I like how most of them kinda warp into Shakira voice when they sing the word “popular”
MEU FAVORITOS❤️❤️Ali Mauzey, Jung Sun Ah, Jenni Barber, Kara Lindsay, Fabi Bang, Katie Rose Clarke,
Comparing the English and non-English versions, I never realized how American (or at least "Western") a lot of the humor is.
Especially with gags like the "were-are/ler-lar" lines, I gotta wonder how they were able to translate the jokes.
Regarless, they were all spectacular performances ^_^
I think the Germany ones little dance and lil pop at the end was the absolute cutest and the sounds were so adorable ☺️
Amazing compilation by some amazing women! How the Elphabas stay in character is a testament to great acting tbh, I'm in tears laughing 😂
i LOVE how unhinged the brazilian one is! i was able to see them last year in São Paulo and omg i laughed SO MUCH
the korean version was so over the top but i love it
Dang Lucy Scherer’s voice is so crispy, it tickled my brain and I dont even know German.
This isn’t the best Gina can sing I saw her live last month for my birthday. She’s truly amazing!!!
Love the English accents from the west end Glindas
I dont
Kristin, Ali Mauzey and Fabi from Brazil! Perfect!💖😂😂😂
Jung Sun Ah is so funny! I loved hers!
My favorites were 11:43 Jung Sun Ah (Korea 2013, 2016, 2021) and 16:11 Glee 2015 - Lea Michele and Chris Colfer.
No one could ever replace Kristin & Idina! I wished the movie would've been made from them!
me too. they'll always be the top versions
same
Yessssss
"know the slang you've got to know" is all i need to hear to know whether i'll favor the performance. megan hilty, annaleigh ashford, lucy durack, louise dearman, lea michele all hit it the same as kristen does & don't fall flat or go up to falsetto. they each have something that makes their performances unique & their own, but the way they sing that line is so important to my enjoyment of the song.
I really enjoyed seeing and hearing this in other languages too. Thank you for sharing this!
I love all the koreana version 3 of them are soooooo talented❤
The fact that korea covered it multiple times ❤❤
Jung sun ah and ali mauzey are my favorites i think they both had the perfect energy

for me, Ali Mauzey is THE REAL GLINDA~~~~~~!!!

Same! I had no idea what it was until now.
It's 4:30a.m., i didn't think I'd watch the whole thing. I have work in 3 hours
loved seeing all the choices each glinda made, annaleigh's really stuck with me!!
Annaleigh was so good in this role
13:22 i like how she still says "...lar" even though it doesn't rhyme
14:24 HER ENERGY
Fun to hear it in so many languages!
