One of the most beautiful songs on this planet.
I absolutely agree.
Jesus !!! She was crying her eyes out at the end !!!!! Such a sensitive opera singer. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
She's a gifted teacher and many of her masterclasses are on UA-cam. In this one (with unfortunate sound quality) she coaches a young singer in this aria and gives a lot of insight into how she builds and interprets the character.

What a huge privilege to see her perform this
Gorgeous voice! The viol line, a descending scale, is word painting at its finest! LOVE love LOVE!
The orchestra is sublime!
Beautiful, touching, amazing. Joyce is always the best. Her tears reveals everything. ❤️
A wonderful version, truly heart breaking.
A hard one to slay. But she SLAYED IT! and to the point of tears. One of my Purcell faves
That would be Dame Janet Baker. Extraordinary timbre and pathos.
Hear hear!
She's ONE of the best. Emma Kirkby and Joyce DiDonato are the best. And someone mentioned Lynne Dawson, my all-time favorite soprano. I'm sure I'll love her rendition just as much. (I haven't heard it yet, but I'm checking it out as soon as I finish commenting on this.)
For this, Janet Baker has always been my favourite; but Joyce DiDonato is really wonderful! What Janet taught us about this aria, which is a very Purcell point, is restraint. Don't give too much too soon. Jessye Norman, rich and majestic though she is, falls at that fence, for me... but Joyce DiDonato... oh, Janet and Henry himself would be proud! I would like also to pay humble tribute to the wonderful musicianship of all concerned in this recording. Sublime!
Wonderful version, so much emotion, thank you
❤❤❤❤
The best version? - Music is not a competition!
No question about it, Joyce Didonato interprets the Lamento at the highest level, but besides this version there are others that are equivalent. Personal taste then decides.
For my part, I appreciate the versions of Janet Baker and Emma Kirkby more because these two singers become heart-touching instruments for the feelings of text and music. With Joyce Didonato, it seems to me just the opposite: for her, the lament is a means of presenting herself and her feelings.
Janet Baker - Dido & Aeneas - When I am laid in earth, ua-cam.com/video/D_50zj7J50U/v-deo.html
Emma Kirkby - Purcell: Dido's lament - York, 2007, ua-cam.com/video/iTV6F3lTU7o/v-deo.html
In addition to a number of excellent "classical interpretations", it should also be mentioned that there are wonderful modern versions:
Annie Lennox - Dido’s Lament - Choral Performance with London City Voices, ua-cam.com/video/f3DFaIovZxc/v-deo.html
Lamento Dido - Henry Purcell - Andreas Prittwitz - Lookingback, ua-cam.com/video/cyIcBURj0WA/v-deo.html
I agree with you . It's all about personal taste .
You forgot to include Jessye Norman’s divine rendition!
@@MySensualWorld, of course I know Jessye Norman's interpretation but I didn't forget to include it in my favorites list. In my opinion Norman is singing Norman and not Purcell. Yet it is personal taste that decides.
@@altemusik Yeah sure, Norman is singing Norman no she is singing Dido’s Lament.
@@MySensualWorld Absolutely. Norman's version is incredible. "Highest level" is click bait. 🙂 Pathos with Norman. Sweet sorrow with Didonato.
Not just a stunning performance of a song - but real acting throughout. Come the finish, I'd lost the Will to live, as poor Dido had. the instrumentalists are excellent to, not sloppy & laconic as some 'early 'ones are. I Hope or wish Purcell could hear this. He'd be chuffed to bits' or 'most delightedly pleased' in his own idiom.
It is so beautiful, so blessed. Praise God. The best version I ever heard. Shalo.

Shalom!!!
Tears. Nothing but tears.
I came here because of Castlevania, and I’m staying because this was a breathtaking performance.
Wow, very beautiful and moving!
this is as eternal as it gets! Such simple words bear so much meaning - true art!
Gorgeous. Sublime. Bravissima!
Joyce di Danato is singing this so beloved aria with nakedness and depth together with the heart of strings
It is difficult to compare other interpretations and artists. The voices are so different.
For me in a moment of grief, lost my beloved friend recently this version is true to me
What you said reminds me of how I feel about my friend "Piper" who died tragically in 1994. And more recently, Sinead O'Connor. Gee, I was just visualizing Sinead singing opera. She would have done well in every genre. I love classical *and* rock.
Die absolute Trauer in einer Arie gesungen zeigt die große Künstlerin Joyce Didonato. Wunderbar♥
Beautiful
Gorgeous, but my own favourite remains that of Janet Baker.
Recitative
Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me,
On thy bosom let me rest,
More I would, but Death invades me;
Death is now a welcome guest.
Aria
When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create
No trouble, no trouble in thy breast;
Remember me, but ah! forget my fate,
Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate.
Thanks for posting for us!
Just beautiful
This is really beautiful. Love it!
Use caution when giving anything the title of "the best", especially within the arts. "My personal favorite" is a more appropriate title. This piece by Purcell has been done by many more historically noted and accomplished vocalists that Ms. Didonato. She did it wonderfully and well acted and cannot be faulted in any way.
Quite right. A very good version. Personally I rather like the Jessye Norman version, but I'd never say one performance was the best ever. It's a matter of choice.
Too much dang vibrato for my personal taste. My life is one long search for baroque opera unruined by vibrato.
People should be free to say who they think is the best.
Although I agree 100% it's just a click bait. Good thing is that it's a good bait since I'm glad I clicked 😅
What’s understood don’t gotta be explained. He has the right to put the best and everybody understands it’s just one man’s opinions
Bravo 👏! Thanks for sharing.
First click bait I don't regret it after clicking. Such an emotional interpretation and also sublime arranged. And, of course, the Elb. I'll return there someday to... All I can say is that this combination (elb+purcell) has resonated here. 😢
Wunderbar Joyce
Magnificent!!!
Bravo !
One of the best living singers... undoubtedly
Beautifulllllllll.!!!!!!!!
I found this song in a book i bought from Lincoln UK called, 'A History of ebetydsy things in England' such a fascinating Book filled with info of all sorts...including sheet music of pieces like this. Awesome eh? 😂👍
This version has such an enchanting and ethereal quality that I sat in silence for several minutes after it ended, completely enveloped by the exquisite beauty of the performance. This will be saved to my Favorites list.
A Purcell aria sung as if it was written by Verdi...way too much vibrato and way too 'heavy', just compare this to Janet Baker's version, also on youtube, which is so much more restrained and intense. She may be a great opera singer, but baroque arias ask for different qualities...
Henry Purcell and Joyce Didonato: two wonderful gifts. Thanks.
Totally agree !!

bravo!
I love this❤
Мурашки по коже, пронизывающее насквозь исполнение, как же приятно, наверное, быть способным исполнить эту арию❤
Art! ❤
Janet Baker for me
Jessye Norman’s is the best
I came here to say exactly that.
I came here to agree with both of you.
Jessye forever!
Nah… Marlena Ernman is the best.
Forever Queen #JessyeNorman
Joan Fegusons absolute favourite song ❤
Sorry, it's Kirsten Flagstad and Jessye Norman's versions for me.
Nope
Joyce’s facial expression in the thumbnail was scary!
Nice but Dame Janet Baker nailed it for me !
This is marvellous. But there is absolutely no such thing as the best of anything.
Not big on opera but I read Wil Durant's description of Dido's Lament in his epic 'History of Civilization' and I had to hear it. Durant was right.
Jeff Buckley's version will always be timeless. The fact that an untrained, self taught rock singer had the guts to sing this classical aria at the Meltdown Festival, England 1995 speaks volumes.
No
Sad
He sang it not like an opera singer but, with his angelic voice and his tormented spirit, he has managed to achieve something unspeakably sublime. His version is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. My God, what a talent he was!
Jeff Buckley's version was all pure Jeff Buckley. The sound of a caged presence, like a raw soul, looking to get free. Not perfection, but unforgettably beautiful to behold.
Jeff Buckley wasn’t an untrained singer!!!!!
Le théorbiste juste derrière Joyce Didonato est Simone Vallerotonda
Джойс просто прелесть.! Уникальная певица.!
А мне очень нравится Джесси Норман в этой арии.
💎
Beautiful in ways, but I don't think it resonated quite the same as Janet Baker - Dido & Aeneas - When I am laid in earth which is even older, a performance and was quite nice. Not sure why.
for me her voice is heavy and doesn't move me.
Fave.
C'est vrai cette version est tout à fait sensible rend l'instant pathétique dans l'expression vocale qui traduit la détresse de façon plaintive autant qu'un cri presque étouffé qui sort d'une âme en désarroi..
When you say "the best version" you need to add 'in my opinion.' People here make comments and think their opinions are fact. They are not. Every one has their own version who's the best. I prefer Jessye Normann, but that is my opinion.
Maybe, but Jessye Norman IS the best and that's coming from MANY operatic singers.
@@EpicPianoArrangements For me her soulful emotional voice is by far my favorite version of Queen Dido's lament. But I see everyone has their favorite. One of the comments here is in fact, from someone who says his favorite is Janet Baker or the singer here, Joyce DiDonato. Jessye Norman? "She falls flat at the fence," he says. Who's the best, then? There's a technical area and vocal ability that, beyond, is individual taste.
Some people feel better when they post opinions as fact, at least when it involves something subjective like art and music!!!!!
@@EpicPianoArrangementsNOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@@thomasromano9321Emma Kirkby and Joyce DiDonato. No Jessye for me!
Jessye Norman for me but this was terrific
Jessye Norman is the owner of this song 🙃
No.
To be honest I thought the accompaniment was total crud. It sounded like 8-10 different 'individual' instruments and not a 'complete/cohesive' sound. I did enjoy her voice and her emotion and passion she put into her performance, but I thought the instrumentation behind her was behind her in more ways than one.
❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
Wentworth brought me here. Edit just noticed she's wearing black gloves like Joan Ferguson A.K.A governor A.K.A " The Freak"
Die Beste! Und die zweitbeste ist die Version von Annie Lennox❤
Update : I just listened to Lynne Dawson's rendition and I love it as much as Emma's and Joyce's renditions. It's a three-way tie.
BTW I wrote a parody of it. I have water on the brain from birth, and certain things give me visual vertigo. So I wrote:
I hate the sky!
I haaaaaate the sky!
It creates much trouble,
Much trouble in my brain!
I hate the sky!
I haaaaaate the sky!
It creates much trouble,
Much trouble in my brain!
Remember that!
Remember that!
The sky gives me vertigo!
Remember that I haaaaaate the sky, it gives me vertigo!
Certainly Lynne Dawson, Emma Kirkby, and Joyce DI Donato, all are great interpreters, great singers, but for me no one equals the raw emotion of Jessye Norman.
@@thomasromano9321 I don't like her because she's not a LYRIC soprano. Low voices and medium voices are not my favorite.
Did you try
Andreas Scholl ?
.
@@ritahorvath8207 I have heard Andreas Scholl and I love his voice but I haven't yet heard him sing Dido's Lament. Thank you for the info! I will listen to it now.
@@ritahorvath8207 thank you! I like it very much. Even though I have specific favorites, I like *all* the *lyric sopranos' and countertenors'* recordings of Dido's Lament.
Joyce DiDonato, you are the best.
So is Marianne Beate Kielland! So many that are the best😂
YES THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!
Better than Janet Baker? I wonder what the wonderful Joyce thinks about that.
Splendid song but far away from the best interpretation. The best one is Lynne Dawson. In the Harmonia Mundi collection of the Opera.
OMG I love Lynne Dawson! I didn't know she sang this. Thank you for the info. I'll listen to her rendition after I finish commenting on this video.
Elin manahan is perfect.
Im a big Joyce fan...yet i prefer Jesse Norman's interpretation. Describing something as 'best' usually comes from people who need "lists". One "prefers" something is perhaps a better distinction. Purcell is a magician...
I’m with you. Loved this version - but if I could have only one version to listen to it would be Jesse Norman’s.
@IKW
I NEED lists, I love to rank things, and I enjoy being a "pedantic nerd"!
@Michael Grant
Jessye, go away from all of my favorite arias! Not just this one.
Wonderful Aria and a wonderful rendition by the entire ensemble here.
P.S. keep putting "the best" if you wish. Only a pedantic nerd doesn't understand that such distinctions are declarations of the publisher's given taste.
It actually helps in the event you post another "the best" video as I can ignore it if I think you were wildly off base about "the best" here.
Thanks for posting.
I love, love, looooove being a "pedantic nerd"!
Emma Kirkby and Joyce DiDonato tie for the best regarding this aria.
This is a pretty good version but that vibrato just ruins it for me.
Lisa Fischer’s version is unique and emotional…the best version that I’VE heard.
Better than DiDonato and Kirkby? Not IMO!
وقتی که بانوئی آرمیده در خاک ام...
English is a very pure sound from this period, and she is manipulating the vowels out of all. Proportion to create a large auditorium opera sound. The composer never intended this. The sound is full is grace and fortitude and presence and mostly full of softness and subtlety. She has lost its original intention. Its like turning a John Donnes Sonnet into a Hollywood Arnie gun fest.
It's in Hamburg . A massive concert hall space . She sang it at a Stonewall event in 2015 to commemorate lost LGBTIQ+souls smaller space a gay bar quite different . In Purcell's day there was no performing space anywhere near the one on the Elbe!
White Lotus
The fear of death: will there become trouble and true painful anguish within one’s own breast, prolonging? We must only wish for the longing for relief from pain’s anguish to release us calmly and expediently unto heaven
Kirsten Flagstad every time.🤜🤛👍
Not a de Donato fan, (way too mannered for my taste: just my taste.) but the orchestral background is clear and rich.
Sounds more like an Irısh translation of the piece.. Naouww troouubool..
Irish translation? Aw, your comment made me wish SINEAD O'CONNOR had sung this in addition to her Irish repertoire. She will always be my favorite rock star. RIP Sinead O'Connor. I love classical music and rock and roll. And since Sinead was classically trained she would have sung this the right way. Jeff Buckley? No frikken way. Sinead was the only rocker who would not have mutilated this song.
...why "the best version"? unless and until the soprano is not sang by a young female, it is far from original! All the conductors should educate themselves with the history of the composition first. While the soprano in this take is beautiful, it falls short to interpret the original just like the rest of 99% of other miss-interpretations. Do you know what changes when the soprano is sang by a girl? There is a lack of excessive vibrato and overall expressions is soft! The dynamic range is limited, therefore it changes the whole emotion of the piece.
Not the best, since there are different interpretations, it depends on personal choice to a great extent. Jeff Buckley, Jessye Norman, Andreas Scholl and of course Janet Baker are above this for me. It takes more than technical perfection to sell this.

She’s no Jessye Norman! Jessye’s version is much more flawless - and more full of emotion!
The best is Janet Baker a very big no to this
Joyce sometimes makes facial expressions that looks like she had her lips done!
What is her name ?
Joyce DiDonato.
Jessey Norman ist gut, aber Janet Baker noch besser❤
Haben Sie es einmal mit
Andreas Scholl probiert ?
♡
East Village opera company has the best version of this song. Hands-down.
A chacun son goût.
Nooooooooooooo!
Troppo vibrato secondo me.
Anne Sofie von Otter‘s is the best
So NOT the best version. Purcell did not write all those appoggiaturas and trills which only go to detract from the pure simplicity of what should otherwise be a very emotional resignation of Dido's fate and death. Janet Baker, then Lea Desandre
Beautiful really, but sorry, I prefere version of Alison Moyet
BEST VERSION INDEED
