This video is a demonstration of Etude 7 on page 44 from the book,
    The Ultimate Hand Technique Workshop.
In this demonstration the snare Etude 7 is played on the drum set. This is to illustrate how you can use the ideas presented in this etude such as odd groupings of 5s and 7s, as well as 3s to 6s etc create solo, improvisation and phrasing ideas.
The Etudes in the book are inspired by rhythms played by Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd, Peter Erskine, Gary Chaffee, Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Alan Dawson, and many other master drummers.
This etude on page 43, presents a variety of advanced rhythms and hand techniques directly inspired by the great Vinnie Colaiuta. During my many years studying with Vinnie Colaiuta’s teacher, Mr. Gary Chaffee, I have many opportunities to discuss the many aspects of Vinnie’s playing and the concepts and techniques he uses on his own playing. You can hear some similar rhythms presented here on the Alan Holdsworth recording “Secrets” featuring Vinnie Colaiuta on drums.
This is one of the hardest Etudes in the book because of the fast pace odd groups in 32 second notes! It is a challenge to play this type of figures at this tempo because they are fast, and over the bar line. So, you must be able to not only physically execute, but most importantly, you must be able to “hear” the rhythms correctly to play it well. I am using jazz techniques that I learned from the master Alan Dawson, stickings I learned from master Gary Chaffee, and hand techniques I learned from Jim Chapin, plus some of my own creations as well.
I love this book because all the other snare books that I tried to play using the full kit, did not sound to me, like anything I would play in a gig. To me, this book presents me with the vocabulary I need and want to use when I play.
This performance is full over the beat and over the bar-line figures that are very interesting and will provide new ways of playing that are note always inside of the beat and the measure.
