Just for a little critic here. You included Illaoi's R in your video while excluding Orianna's R for the "conditions/synergies with the champion's kit" reasons. But Illaoi depends as much on her E and W to make her R valid : if you E before, you get one more tentacle spawn, and the W is ABSOLUTELY needed to make her R works aswell.

Having an underwhelming set of basic abilities alongside a game changing ultimate was kind of the standard for a lot of classic DotA characters, so it makes sense that most of these are only found on old champions
The main diference is that in DotA you can compensate for your underwhelming basic abilities with items that give you new abilities, as to not make your character nothing but a walking ultimate

      @davidkiknavelidze2130 2 роки тому +6

Umm, actually, that's not true at all. In league those underwhelming basic abilities at least have some AP/AD scalings so you can still be powerful, especially in the late game. For example, full AP Seraphine can melt tanks with q alone, meanwhile Enigma is a walking creep outside his ultimate. Also, items, which enigma(or heroes like him) usually buys are still only useful to enable a successful ult cast(blink, bkb, refresher...).

Interesting that you put Nunu in there. I would have rather placed MF there.
Except for AP Nunu Aram memes, I am never scared of Nunus Ult. Maybe its because I dont see Nunu... like... ever? But the newer champions are usually mobile enough to escape or block his ult easily, which negates a bit of the strength.
MF ult on the other hand deals damage instantly, standing in it for a mere second can be lethal and it also has good area.

    • @Neion8

True but AP Nunu ult can literally hit 2 and a half times harder than a Lux ult (no joke Lux ult at max is 500+100%AP, Nunu's hits for 1275+250%AP) - hell Nunu's fully charged Ult hits harder than Lux's entire ability combo (240+270+500+190=1200 base damage+ 60+70+100+20=250%AP scaling) so that's 1200+250%AP from an entire kit of a mage vs 1275+250% from a single ability... How is that not a super ult? Then on top of that Nunu gets an 85+150%AP+50%bonus health shield from it - compared to Lux's 125+35% shield from her kit.
Imagine you're on a team with no stuns/knockups/supressions and as you're nearly killing Baron you see the edge of Nunu Ult reach out from behind the wall to touch Baron; it could easily deal upwards of 2k damage even with a partial build, so how tf are you gonna outsmite it? How tf are you gonna burst through a massive shield plus a fairly tanky character in less than 3 seconds all while it's emmitting an up to 95% slow in a massive area, potentially preventing multiple teammates from helping the fight? Also, you know if you fail you then potentially have everyone on your team take over 1500 damage (since with a 650 unit radius, even Caitlyn can't auto Nunu without being in range of it), putting even your (non-Sion/Cho'gath) tanks in danger of getting one-combo'd by Nunu's other abilities.

I also think this is a conversation about how champs with super ults are usually late game scalers and one with basically no ults are early game focused. I think this is a good thing for variety because sure you can win early but if the games goes on too long you have fumbled on ur advantage. Although if riot does more super ults champs they should have a smooth base kit, it doesn’t have to be powerful but it should help them get to the point where they are strong. Enchanters I think are a good example of this bc seraphine has a good base kit, and good ult. But her base kit is weaker in numbers which means she has to play good to get to late game.

Problem with fiddle ult is that he needs to channel. He can be interrupted while doing it. So he has to ambush mostly. And if the enemy team just plays more carefully & have good vision, it loses some value. Also he may be killed after ulting before it gets full value, or people may zone him. He needs Zhonya to pull it off safely.
Malphite on the other hand can use his ult at will, either as ambush or as the fight ensues. He can't be interrupted. So while fiddle CAN do more with his ult, it is also easier to counterplay. Malphite ult is just a constant consistent threat no matter what. And it is instant full effect.

I think Azir's ult, Emperor's Divide, is a huge oversight in this video. Huge AoE knockup/knockback followed by a wall that allies can pass through but not enemies. Can be used for disengage and picks. But it's a seriously great engage. You can cc everyone and split the enemy team in two. Even more power comes when used in tight spaces like the jungle, making the fight very one-sided. It fits all the criteria too. It functions outside of Azir's kit, so Sylas still loves it. Not only does it have good damage, but it still poses a threat without that damage if Azir is behind. Definitely belongs on the list and in the discussion in my oppinion.

It's really interesting to see how different MOBAs treat ultimate abilities. Having played both SMITE and League (the former more), it's really interesting the way power budgets are distributed between these games for their super ultimates. Smite feels like 1/2 of their characters have Super Ultimates which makes the power budget towards the basic abilities skew differently than League's. It's no DotA (I've only played the original one as a kid and have no experience with the second one) but it's still noticeably different in my experiences.
One example is Chaac's ultimate that while channeling gives him ~2s of complete CC immunity and up to 70% damage mitigation (while being allowed to move) before having a knockup into a 3s silence in a huge area around him, with a cooldown that's lower than the average ultimate CD in SMITE. This causes him to have one of the worst base kits in the game yet it's more serviceable in teamfights than whenever I get Malph or Kennen outside of their laning phase. There's also Poseidon who has an average kit for a Mage but his Kraken, when hitting with the center of the ability, has a massive knockup and a 2s stun along with dealing double the damage, but most people still fear the CC more than the damage. It's used almost like Annie's Tibbers stun but without the need to stack and is part of one iconic moment is Smite's pro scene where a (generally considered) weaker team won a 3v5 base defense game due to hitting a 4-man Kraken (with ~100 health left on the base, btw).
Then again, SMITE also has a lot more stance swappers, so that's also something.

The goal of the Abilities are simple, to open the combat. If you land them right, even if you don't have the full kit, it's enough to shift the fight in your team favour. They are so good on their own that most core item for intitators are not for the damage but just to make the setting up easier.

I would say her "super" ability is her Q. So strong that if given to any other midlane mages, it would be broken.

Super ultimates are always on champions that are really fun to use, i love most of them. I think the right way to design such champions would be the way they did with Fiddlesticks. Fiddle's Q and E are mostly circumstantial ; They don't synergize with his ult too much, meanwhile his W is here for jungle clearing.
Giving a super ultimate champion tools that can help them cover circumstances over basic but tuned down abilities like Taric feels so much better as it allows them to have more choices as to how they play the game even while their ult is down. Fiddle without R is basically a support: A fear, a silence, AOE damage and survivability. Taric without R is... Taric without R. Not much.

Quick disclaimer on my opinion, I do not play league and haven’t in seven years but do enjoy the game design exercise of trying to tackle its issues. The biggest plus of making a champion with ult in my eyes is reliability. Theres a lot of variables that change from match to match, but in theory the super ultimate will always be able to impact is a good feeling. It helps games feel less snow bally. But on the otherside yes the other parts of their kit (more specifically their up time) will be far lower which can make a champion feel like a walking R button. I think one of the characters who has the best balance is Nunu who is a much more macro objective based champion with the chomp acting as a second smite. His super ultimate allows nunu to focus on his while still being able to make big plays come a team fight in a way that allows for healthy counter play. Basically super ultimates I find work best in kits that are focused on a non-combat niches as a way of keeping a character relevant in team fights.

This could be done like Warwick's Q, where the unempowered version happens on ability tap and the empowered one happens on ability hold.
This way, players can decide if they want their ultimate to turn the tides of the next team fight, but after that they have only the weak normal abilities, or if they want good basic abilities and sacrifice the high impact ult for that.

I have an idea of how you could make a champion with a super ultimate and decent primary abilities without it being overpowered:
1: Give the champion a super ultimate without reducing the power budget on primary abilities.
2: Whenever the champion uses ultimate, primary abilities become weaker for X seconds (reduce effects, damage, or both)
3: Whenever the champion uses a primary ability, it's ultimate ability becomes weaker for X seconds (reduce effects, damage, or both)
That way, you have a champion that can:
1: start a fight with a super ultimate, but then has weak primary abilities to continue the fight
2: start a fight with decent primary abilities, but then has an average normal ultimate
3: if the ultimate is on CD and X seconds had already passed since it was used, the champion has decent primary abilities to fight while the ultimate recharges

Heyhey cool video, definitely agree with most of it but I have some gripes with your definition. Fiddles Ultimate becomes as strong as it is mostly due to its passive, he fears anyone taking damage from him that didnt see him. Without this his ult wouldnt be quite the same level of threat. The damage alone is scary when he has items but when he doesnt nobody is gonna take much damage as they can just run out. What makes it scary is the interaction with his kit that lets him layer his W on top of his R while enemies are ccd from his passive. His W having an execute built in making that especially strong. I still agree crowstorm should count but I don't agree that super ultimates should be valued by themselves only, the way they are meant to be used within that champions kit needs to be taken into account.
Illaoi for example. Her Ult is utterly useless without E to make her tentacles slap on their own, W to trigger a tentacle slap and Q to buff the damage of those tentacles as Q is responsible for all slaps not just the button press.
Now next, where is miss fortune? Her R singlehandedly can oneshot entire teams trumping even fiddle and kennen either in how fast or how much it does, all available from range too.
Now as for Nunu, I don't see his R to be a super ultimate at all, its cancelled easily and he never builds full ap anywhere but in aram and even then his W is the threat not his R as escaping R is too easy, interrupting it is too. Current nunu R is a slow tool to guarantee some extra damage and make sure E explodes and roots them while ur team catches a gank and is only used for the shield it gives in teamfights. If nunu gets to fully charge his r in a teamfight suffice to say his R would not have been the difference in that fight 99 out of 100 times.
Yone R? It has high cooldown and not much damage, its high range and that it us a blink not a dash means he can use it to escape but when an enemy is hit it stops before its max range right behind that enemy. It is certainly a big cc tool if it hits all enemies but the chance of that happening usually is very very low, it also primarily works in combination with his E.
Viego, his R has low cooldown, resets, (as established when other parts of his kit make his ult scary that shud be fine otherwise illaoi and fiddle would be out too)
Triggers on hit, is a dash, aoe. This ability is quite insane with all the things it does, it easily outdamages yones ult too for example I don't see how this is not a super ult if yones is.
Lastly where on earth is katarina? Aoe high damage ult that procs on hit multiple times and is only on a 30 second cooldown but also resets entirely if you get a kill or 2? That alone is scary.

for super ultimates, I generally think of AOE damage/crowd control. Since globals are there own category & defensive/utility ults are generally infinite value abilities. Imo, when people say super ultimates, they mean teamfight wombo combos.

The boring thing about League is that pretty much all ults in the game (with a few exceptions) are "SUPER BIG WOMBOCOMBO BUFF/DAMAGE/CC." Champs like Jayce, Nidalee and Elise are fine, but I'd really like there to be a champ that has a passive ultimate they can't really cast that still gives them a massive spike. Jax is probably the only champion I can think of that fits this and he's hella fun imo. Would be nice if Riot could release a champion with a completely passive ult in the future but I honestly doubt that's gonna happen.
I say this because when I played Dota there were a few heroes there who had passive ults like Phantom Assassin, Bristleback, Tiny, Wraith King, Enchantress, Meepo, Ogre-Magi and Phantom Lancer who were super fun to play and were really interesting to control. I wish League could have some of that.

I main Kayn, and no I dont think his ultimate is a "super ultimate", but one notable thing that is really OP about it is that you can smite while inside somebody. Its really OP for stealing drakes, as it is the only thing you need to focus on, and can usually get out because his cooldowns are so low, along with flash and E

i think every champ can have a super ultimate with their rest of the kit also being strong, It depends on what you consider a super ultimate the ones you mentionend have no condition to be used and you can just decide wether you R or not but there a sum champs that require a certain condition for their R which is also very powerful
I myself consider Lillia R a super ultimate since you only have to hit an enemy with an ability. Fiddle R needs also some setup with his effigy so enemys gets feared otherwise its not a super ultimate for me because enemies can just run/dash out of it in like 1 sec or focus him, it doesnt have the same impact as if he was unseen so since both need some sort of setup I consider both super ultimates
now that i made clear what a super ultimate is for me
champs can have super ultimates with the rest of their kit being strong as far as either the R has something the enemy can play around or the rest of the kit best example for this is kindred she has a very strong ultimate and the rest of her kit is pretty good aswell, she just lacks some stats which she gets by getting the hunts, if she doesnt get any hunts, she is pretty week unless 4 kills ahead or so
generally themore utility/mobility an ability has, the more it needs boundries the enemy can play around

I think Malphite should retain his current ultimate, but have slightly less knockup time that can be compensated by putting hard cc on his E (forms a wall around him for 0.5 seconds) and a slight knockback on his first W. His Q should change into a mini braum ult (form a fissure that knockup enemies)

Could we convince you to do a one of these for passives? Champs where the passive is a lot of the power budget in the champion, things like Jhin's 4 shots or Veigo's wraiths spring to mind, but I am not sure which other ones are out there

Darius is only scary because of Noxian Might. AOE heal, a slow and a stun are nothing. His ult resetting is cool but that just makes him a worse pyke without the Might triggering

    • @GCWeber

Infinite stacking passives come to mind, especially Veigar (although Veigar wouldn't be as good without his e I'd still say his passive is even more essential).
Urgot's a weird case in that his passive would just be okay without the rest of his kit but it's the core ability in his kit and literally everything else in his kit is designed to capitalize on it.
Aphelios literally has two active abilities and both change wildly depending on how his passive is currently being used.
Karthus's passive makes him almost more dangerous dead than alive which forces some tough decisions on the enemy team
Nautilus doesn't *really* fit the mold but his passive *is* super underrated, hard cc on an auto attack is nutty.

Really makes you think in which world someone with a really good base kit can steal a super ultimate (something the original holders had to give their whole kit's power budget to be balanced) and still be balanced (sylas is fundamentally busted please nerf this shit into the ground)

    • @manarager3413
      @manarager3413 2 роки тому

He really isn't. His base kit is functional but it is by no means incredibly powerful. He has one strong ability, one decent ability, and one relatively mediocre ability. To give a good example, it's like taking a champion like Nidalee and saying that if she *just*( had her human form that she's busted and needs nerfs. If nida only had her human form, she'd be really underwhelming to play- That's Sylas when he's not got his ultimate. A single really standout ability and a pair of honestly mediocre ones.

I think Malphite's ultimate is the best one in the game. It's a no-questions-asked ultimate. As a tank malphite it is a very strong instant mass cc with high range, & it's hard to avoid/dodge without flash or other dashes. With an ap malph it is all that + it bursts down any squshies without protection & atleast halves bruisers.
It has it's limitations as anything does, but it requires so little to be super-effective.
Fiddle has more dmg output but he has to channel, and he can be interrupted & cc'ed while ulting. You can't really cc the instant effect of Malph.
While the rest of the malph kit is pretty good anyway if you go ap. Q's do a significant single-target dmg, w's help you with extra armor & splash aa's. While the E does decent dmg as ap.
Malphite's main weakness is pre-6, and laning phase if up against a ranged enemy who can punish him while farming.
I actually wouldn't sleep on Ahri's ult either. She gets three additional "flashes" that deals damage. And if killing someone she gains extra charges up to a potential 7-8 charges. Nobody else has that kind of potential in pure mobility/positioning. If played correctly you can dash in & out of a teamfight several times, dodging enemy abilities & doing alot of damage. You can escape most things, & you can chase most enemies.

You said super ultimate should be self sufficient but include Illaoi in it. However Illaoi ultimate is all about interacting wiith the kit
    - the passive is what makes the tentacle deal actual damage (which is further boosted by Q)
    - W allows Illaoi to have more than one slam
    - E makes the ult scary in duel by allowing to set up an extra tentacle and giving a damage amplification to each slam
When sylas use illaoi ult, it does just the base damage, spawn the tentacles but they don't do anything.

I think Seraphine is one of the champions with a super ultimate and decent basic abilities. Her Q does so much damage and W is a wide area shield and heal. I think her worst ability is her E but it's just because it's a bit slow but other than the slow flight, it's still a guaranteed hit if you land Encore and can also guarantee you 2 High Notes if you combo it correctly. I don't know if it's true but when I play Seraphine mid, I can still do a lot of damage without Encore.

I'd argue that hecas ult could be a super ult because even when behind you can still change the fight by cc'ing the whole team
