Cardinal John Henry Newman (21/02/1801-11/08/1890)
Thousands of people were heading to the Vatican for John Henry Newman's canonization on Sunday October 13th 2019.
Indian Sister Marian Thresia, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family, Italian Sister Giuseppina Vannini, Brazilian Sister Dulce Lopes Pontes, and Marguerite Bays, a Swiss consecrated virgin of the Third Order of St. Francis will be canonized alongside John Newman.
Their canonizations took place during the 2019 Special Synod of Bishops from the Pan-Amazonian region held at the Vatican October 6th - 27th.
Cardinal John Henry Newman is the Saint of modern times.
The Prince of Wales attended and also Cardinal Vincent Nichols along with 17 English and Welsh Bishops.
John Newman spent 25 years at Oxford as a student, teacher and pastor. Lead Kindly Light was sung on the Titanic at a hymn singing gathering and on one of the Titanic's Life Boats.
It was also sung in the First World War at services held before troops went into the trenches.
Trapped miners sang the hymn in the Durham Coalfield mining disaster in 1909.
Betsie Ten Boom, sister of Corrie Ten Boom, and other women sang 'Lead Kindly Light' as they were taken to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp during the Holocaust.
