This tutorial is like a lighthouse in the fog. You've laid out the pen n node tools in clear practical usable detail. Also I like your clear diction, no razzamataz - no fluff. Just good old fashioned tutoring, passing on of knowledge. Well done, keep up the good work. I am knew to art n knew to digital art, I need this kind of tutoring to show me the way. Thank you.
Thanks Stephen, I appreciate the feedback on the tutorial and my style and glad it's of use to you. Check out my other videos too. All the same pace and style
This is an absolute gold mine. I wish I could hit thumbs up more than once. No where on the internet is there such a detailed explanation of the pen and node tools, not even in their own book. I can't thank enough. I have learnt more in the last hour than I did in months of searching and experimenting.
Hi Jim, Thank you so much for leaving such an awesome comment. I made this video because in the early days of learning Affinity Designer there wasn't any detailed videos, so alot of my knowledge has come from trial and error and the workbook. So for this video I wanted to include solutions to all the annoyances i experienced back then :)
Absolutely agree. This is an excellent, clear and concise explanation of the pen tool. Liked and subbed. Looking forward to more from ArtistWright, sir!
I have been designing for over two decades. This is the ONLY tutorial that has ever made sense of the pen tool for me. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your channel. Your videos have made me a better designer. 💜
I saw the runtime of this video and thought, "No way. I'm not watching a 1 hr. and 20 minute video which could have been an email!" I was completely wrong! This is incredible. Thank you for taking the time and meticulous care to craft this video. Cheers!
Brilliant, clear and easy to follow tutorial! I learned everything important I needed to get started on my first project. Thank You!! Best Educational video I have found on this.
So many tricks and details I would have never discovered they exist and how to use them by myself. Great job by explaining them step by step. Thanks a lot!!!
This is the best tutorial I've ever seen on you tube. For this kind of professional teaching you normally pay a lot of money. Absolutely great! Thank you so much
This is, by far, the best tutorial I have ever come across for using the Pen and Node tools. I went from, "Eh, this looks... okay" to, "Now that's what I envisioned in my head!" after watching it. Thanks a ton for this!
Just switched from Windows to mac and also from Adobe to Affinity. I feel like this channel and tutorial was just made for me to make the switchover easy. Thank you for this great content.
Highly informative! If you think you have mastered the pen tool, you haven't watched this video yet - it shows everything about it. Great work, thank you very much!
I can't say enough how I have enjoyed your teaching style and this lesson on the pen and node tool. It is filled with so much information. I have learned so much in the last hour. I am very happy that I found your channel.
Excellent tutorial! I have a good grasp of Affinity Photo but only use the pen & node tool for selections. Lately my grand daughter has asked me to trace her drawings and so I needed to up my skill with these tools. Your teaching style matches my learning style - thank you!!!
I have just found this site - it is clearly the best I have seen. I am new to Affinity Designer 2. I now feel I have some hope of learning the program. Thank you for the clear concise manner in which you present the videos. There is NO doubt you are a TOP instructor, and to give your time so freely on the "net" is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
Your tutorial is very helpful and clear, thank You! I was used to older simpler tools and had not used them for years. Affinity is used differently but more powerful and this video helped a lot.
I usually don't write any comments, but this one is a must! Thank you very much. Very understandable and easy tutorial. For anyone like me who is searching for the studio section at 1:00:12 this option has been moved to "window" since the latest updates.
As a new user, I ran into an interesting issue around linked and embedded. Unknowingly, I double-clicked on a base PDF and began sorting the jumble of curves into base map features like North arrow, scale, etc., not realizing these layers were only captured in the embedded file, so I could not retain their position and scale when I tried to move them into other layers in the design map. A tutorial on how to navigate layers and copy and paste around embedded and linked files would be a helpful topic. The support material is basic, and your strategic approach would be tremendous. Thank you!!
Ah yes I understand the situation ( I went through a similar situation in the past) I will note down your request for a future video. This video might be somewhat helpful as I do embed a multi page pdf into my affinity file and change colours etc. ( on the phone mockup). ua-cam.com/video/wTd6myYc7Mo/v-deo.htmlsi=LEvZHhJMmZtMx28C
Note: when you edit an embedded pdf in an affinity file it won't update the original pdf. But if you make that embedded pdf 'Linked' (through resource manager) it will update the original pdf when you press update. You can also get affinity to automatically update the linked pdf in resource manager by selecting auto update.
@@ArtistWright Thanks! Moving layers from embedded PDFs into my base map and maintaining scale did not work. I'm pretty naive about embedded layers and was in awe when they suddenly appeared. It's a good thing I'm experimenting before beginning my project. It's a great app, and I can't say enough about how well you present it!
most of the time i just open the pdf separately from my affinity designer project and do the old copy and paste. resizing as needed. So is your main issue that you want to retain the same scale of whatever you are copying when it goes into the affinity Designer?
@@ArtistWright@ArtistWright Yes, the original base maps are created in QGIS, with an orthographic background, scale, N arrow, property boundary, hydrologic features, etc., and then exported as PDFs. These are bought into AD, where I group and name the features so I can drag them into the design and modify them. The orthographic photo is clipped, too. Maintaining scale is critical for adding buildings, walkways, etc. Ultimately, I need to develop a repeatable process since I'll be doing multiple designs, which can be very time-consuming. I guess I like protocols too much!
As many of us already said: this is a great in-depth tutorial. I will def come back to it to get the routine needed. Would appreciate a short version of it for the iPad: all those small icons there are hard to figure out. Thank you for this one!
This is amazing! Thanks for taking the time to really go step by step through these tools and showing what they do! Now just got to try and remember all the options and key combinations
Just what I've been looking for. Superb tutorial, excellent clearly spoken English with every step shown and highlighted in detail without showmanship or entertainment gloss. What an EPIC video, it solved and answered so many questions I had. Great pace and perfectly explained. 👍 ☕ Thanks so much for posting this tutorial, it's awesome.
You are a great tutor and thanks for patiently putting this together with such finesse and agree with all the comments below. I was looking at the mine of information on your website and it is fabulous. One major issue that is of benefit to the beginner i.e ME IS THAT you dont keep switching between MAC and Window commands and keep to Mac albeit you have put a useful table of alternative window commands up so that makes a huge difference as believe me I have some lessons where that happens all the time and it creates a fog and note the same comment was made below by SW where your style is nice and clear. I have wasted so much time replaying videos where the tutor/demonstrator even makes a mistake by having to correct ie starts of with Mac and constantly gives tries to give both windows and command and then inadvertently flips them themselves which means wondering why it is not working only to find it is not the "student" fault but this issue.
Thank you Nigel, I totally hear you in regards to the mac / pc shortcut keys. I only use a mac so don't want to confuse things further by reeling out a bunch of shortcuts for both whilst designing. Like you say I have included some windows relevant shortcuts in the description so I'm glad you found that. Happy designing and have a happy new year Nigel
Brilliant video. I enjoyed it throughout. I have a question you may have answered in the video but I couldn’t find it. On some occasions I’ve had a stuck node where I can’t access the handles. How can I get those handles revealed? I’m on a PC. TIA.
Thank you so much for the detailed information about the pen.... it makes more sense now... :-) It sure most help me a lot in the future. So thanks again!
Learned so much from your tutorials! I'm trying to figure out how to create a wireframe globe grid with the pen tool! Any advice or tutorials for that?
Hello Haga, you can create a globe grid with the Pen tool but with alot of manual Work. My suggestion, get Inkscape (it's free). Open it up and go to extensions > render > wireframe sphere. Now click on live preview in the popup settings, now play around with the settings until you are happy. Now export that as .SVG and open that in Affinity Designer. Its all still vector.
@@ArtistWright thank you so much! I will continue to learn from you! Your content is one of the most detailed and easiest to follow on UA-cam most definitely!
@@ArtistWright quick question for a pro! Can you flatten vector layers in affinity designer? I'm trying to apply a stroke on the entire design I created, but I'm having an issue. is there anyway we can have a quick chat?
make a copy of all the layers first. If you want to add all your layers into one layer, use the boolean operation Add, then you can give this a stroke.
What a great tutorial, the best one I have found yet. I have two questions though. Say if I wanted to move and rotate a number of nodes and handles together. For instance say that the sharks dorsal has 20 nodes and handles (I know, that would be insane) and I wanted to sweep the dorsal backwards and also rotate it, is that possible in Designer? I just don't see any controls anywhere that would rotate the 20 selected nodes. Also, is there anyway of moving JUST the handles of two different nodes together at the same time? Thanks for this great video, very helpful.
You can't rotate multiple nodes at once as far as I know, same with the handles. One handle at a time. But if you find out that you can. Please let me know! Thanks for the feedback!
Great job. I may get another monitor just so I can watch and listen and follow along live. Or it might be cheaper to get designer for my iPad and run it on that, if they are similar. In the meantime I've grabbed a screenshot of the shark, so I can practice useing that underneith, ghosted.
thank you for this very informative tutorial. I have a question, how would one do it on iPAD version . especially with the short hand keyboards actions. if you have another tutorial pls can you provide the link. TIA
13:03 Great Tutorial. Thank You. I'm on PC and holding ALT and clicking does change a smooth node into a sharp node but clicking + right mouse (that's what it says at the bottom of the page, not click + CTRL) does not change back to a smooth node. Google hasn't turned up a solution yet. Still digging around.
@@ArtistWright, there doesn't seem to be an existing item in the Node tool for toggling from sharp node to smooth node. There are 5 options available, 3 for cycling nodes forward, backward or cycling a selection box and 2 for breaking and joining curves. What I need to find out is if there is a way for me to add another entry that would change a sharp node into a smooth node via Ctrl + left mouse click. I didn't see anything about this in your shortcuts video when I watched it.
@@ArtistWright Always enjoyed your tutorials pal,,,very clear and spoken well and easy to follow along, with great footage showing excactly what you clicked on with no mysteries.. awesome ! keep em coming..

Thank you, I appreciate that. Keep your eyes peeled for a new tutorial
Well done. A really excellent tutorial.
Thanks Terry
Fantastic, great teaching style and content thank you. Subbed.
Thanks Jackster! I appreciate it
A very clear and helpful tutorial. Thank you.
Thanks Adastra
Thanks for this awesome tutorial.
Hi Bull Shark, Thanks for watching
To anyone reading this. I’m just learning, so you use the escape to start a new line. What do I use on a tablet?
Thank you, great vid.
Hi Sam thanks, I haven't used the tablet version yet sorry
really very interesting! I'm curious to see how it works on iPad now.
Cheers
Thanks so much for this video. It is very helpful.
No problem Susan
But... Your tuts are fantastic. Thanks a lot.
Thanks you Andre
Outstanding video, well done 👍🏻
Thanks Marc!
Very nice tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you Eric!
NO OTHER PEN AND NODE TOOL VIDEO COMES CLOSE TO THIS ONE
Cheers Digi draw dude, it took a while to try and structure it and cover everything so I appreciate that
@@ArtistWright You're welcome! You did a superb job 👊🏾
Great tutorial! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks Katja
Great Tutorial. Well explained : )
Thank you
What a great tutorial, the best one I have found yet.
@@ArtistWright Thanks for the quick response
No worries
Here I made a video about this. You can rotate multiple nodes. ua-cam.com/video/870Ed9mv5dw/v-deo.htmlsi=hJK9irLi0Z2Ctu-G
Thank you SO much for your tutorial 👍
No problem! Thanks for watching
Great job. I may get another monitor just so I can watch and listen and follow along live. Or it might be cheaper to get designer for my iPad and run it on that, if they are similar. In the meantime I've grabbed a screenshot of the shark, so I can practice useing that underneith, ghosted.
thanks for watching! Affinity designer looks very different on iPad.
Thanks for the warning.@@ArtistWright
Another option if you have an ipad is, you can use it as a second screen for your mac. its called sidecar.
Thank you. I never thought of that@@ArtistWright
@homecareful no problem
It is the pen tool in conjunction with the node tool that help to make Affinity Designer a top-notch vector design application.
Totally agree! 👍🏻
@@ArtistWright Are you on facebook?
thank you for this very informative tutorial. I have a question, how would one do it on iPAD version . especially with the short hand keyboards actions. if you have another tutorial pls can you provide the link. TIA
Thanks! Yes It's possible on the iPad too, I haven't made an iPad tutorial yet though 😬
Thanks alot! I wish I could test that 9ut but I don't have a Windows computer. One thing you could do is change the shortcut yourself
@@ArtistWright, thanks! I will see if I can figure out how to do that.
My new shortcuts tutorial shows how to change the shortcuts btw
@@ArtistWright, there doesn't seem to be an existing item in the Node tool for toggling from sharp node to smooth node. There are 5 options available, 3 for cycling nodes forward, backward or cycling a selection box and 2 for breaking and joining curves. What I need to find out is if there is a way for me to add another entry that would change a sharp node into a smooth node via Ctrl + left mouse click. I didn't see anything about this in your shortcuts video when I watched it.
So I read this on a forum. Hope it works:
using Windows. Right Mouse and Left Click on node = Convert to smooth node
Nice tutorial, I need this
Thanks!
Amazing tutorial thanks
Cheers Juan

@@ArtistWright Always enjoyed your tutorials pal,,,very clear and spoken well and easy to follow along, with great footage showing excactly what you clicked on with no mysteries.. awesome ! keep em coming..
Thank you Michael!
fine video.
is there a way to reduce the nodes (if there are many of them) via tool (lever)?
Yes there is in the node tool options, but it will change your path a fair bit
@@ArtistWright I only found the "smooth curve" button...🤷♂
@@fiefenduddch that's the one
great tuts!
Thank you Gia
Just brilliant. !
