    Doddy, you are the Oracle of MTBs. Thanks for all the info and researching those bikes for me. Much appreciated. Love the look of the Whyte by the way, but you're right there's nothing wrong with the Yeti, so sticking with that for now. I demoed a YT Capra with 650b wheels and loved how it rolled over the terrain and my hardtail is 650b too.

    I really resonate with what you said about the getting the biggest frame you can get away with. Even as a medium size rider.. This video has me seriously questing my choice of a size medium frame on my new purchase. Even with a 60mm stem w/6 degree rise and 40mm rise bars I still feel I'm over the front end with the reach too short. I'm 5.8 and and purchased a 2020 Ragley mmmbop with some modern slacker geometry.. bike is awesome maybe should have got a size large.

    A medium cage 11sp XT RD-8000 GS will even run with an 11-50 tooth cassette in the back, although the chain tension is near borderline, and the B screw might reach its limit. You can pimp it with several upgrades though (Wolfcage, Goatlink, Garbaruk cage, etc), which all should improve things. I was running the XT SG with the massive 50 in the back for some time though, and it did work. I eventually upgraded to a Wolfcage though to improve shifting performance.

    Some sewer covers in my town are across the street with longitudinal cuttings. If one ride a street bike it must pass diagonaly or the front wheel get stuck between. And its dangerous to do that because you cant always go sideway in traffic. So i chose an MTB for commuting in town (6km) and for fun ride. At my old bike i replaced 2.1 default with 2.2Continental. At my new bike i still use 2.1Maxxis but with lower pressure.

    Hey doddy, in regard of gearbox bikes you should definatly have a look at the effigear gearbox and cavalerie bikes. I really like the idea of the pivotpoint of the swingarm beeing coaxal with the sprocket. It would be the only way I would consider a gearbox on my bike. This combined with a low mounted rear shock would be perfect in regards of weight distribution.

    Hey Doddy, loving the Tech show and think you're doing an awesome job so keep it up!
    I'm a tall guy too (6'4") and my Remedy 29er has a Reverb dropper post with 125mm of travel. I absolutely love my dropper post but feel like it's not quite tall enough for me. I'm considering a longer travel post, but my upgrade list for this spring seems to be getting longer with some other items wearing out (shoes and tires). I'm wondering if you think the upgrade would make a major difference or if I'm not really going to notice. Also, what are your thoughts on some of the lower price point dropper posts, like the Brand-X or any other recommendations you may have.

Great job you're all doing 👌🏻😁👍🏻 I have quick question, I'm riding a Northtec Gravity 27.5 (Running a Rockshox XC30 TK/27.5 fork) currently with 2.10 tyres on front and back. The clearance at the rear doesn't allow me to go any wider unfortunately and I would like to know what you recommend the widest I should go on the front? Would going 2.60 front with a 2.10 rear be advised? Or would it be out of place? Thanx in advance and keep up the great work. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

    I'm running a minion DHF 2.5 up front and a continental trail king 2.2 on the back 27.5 wheels

  • @sp00n
    @sp00n 6 років тому

    The Trail King (former Rubber Queen) is the largest non plus tire I know. I think I measured it with 164mm bead to bead, which is about 8-10mm more than other 2.4" tires. Note that this is not the tire width when mounted, but from one end of the carcass to the other. Which means that this tire has a huge volume. And actually a wide rim will make the tire less tall, as it stretches out the tire and makes it wider. On skinnier rims the tire grows even more in height.
    Apparently Continental has overhauled their "noble" tires (Baron, Trail King, Mountain King, etc) for 2018 with a unified carcass, so it might not be as large as before. But I haven't seen a new model yet, so I can't tell.

    You often mention doing a lower leg service on forks, however the manual for my 2017 Fox 34 only mentions checking after each ride and an annual service - nothing about a lower leg service after x hours.
    Should I be taking it apart and changing the oil? Or just following the advice in the manual from Fox? The same goes for my shock.

  • @OneWheelLess
    @OneWheelLess 4 роки тому

    The whole point of a dual air fork is the tuning capabilities don’t add oil, you adjust the progression with the air balance between the chambers.

  • @69sound81
    @69sound81 2 роки тому

    I've found that as you go bigger, it is more about the capabilities of the bike and as you go smaller it is more about the capabilities of the rider. That is the feeling I get with sizing. On a smaller bike (within reasonable limits) I feel more like my bike follows me. With bigger bikes the feeling changes more towards me being the one that "follows" the bike. This makes sense. Imagine an adult riding a small 20" kids bike, the bike can just follow the adult on top, but if you put a 10yo kid in a XXL 29er, the kid is the one following the bike. I rather have a happy medium with tendency to downsizing for it to feel more playfull, nimble and agile but respecting the limits of "bike size to my size ratio"

    On the cassette question. I ran a 25T capacity zee mech with a modified 11-36 cassette to 11-42. Worked well without the need for a goat link or longer b screw. Only think to consider is maybe chain growth so yea. The “No chance” statement is incorrect. It s worth trying.

    Doddy is right about the 3M tape. It's fantastic at frame protection. However, if you change your mind & want to take it off for some reason it can be a bit of a nightmare to get off. I'm speaking from experience here. So if you're going to use it try & make sure you're not going to want to take it off in the future.

  • @adriamr_8
    @adriamr_8 6 років тому +1

    For the question from @ArronHold about trying to fit a bigger cassette, I'll sugest to buy the wolf tooth goatlink. It's a little mech hanger extensor wich is screwed into your original mech hanger dropping 2cm your derailleur. This allows you to fit a bigger cassette no matter if you are running a 9, 10 or 11 speed derailleurs.

    #ASKGMBNTECH I love riding hardtails on every kind of trail imaginable. Because the rear tire is going to take harder hits than a full sus bike is it better to run heavier carcass tires even on flat trails? What would the downside be as far as weight? How much would a thicker tire effect pedaling during climbs and or long flat sections? Would higher air pressures create noticably less rolling resistance? Or should I settle for running a fast and lighter tire on more rough trails?

    Hey doddy, I too am a big fan of long slack geometry, being a huge fan of pole, Nicolai and my favourite mondraker🤙🏼 I’m currently riding a 2016 Santa Cruz Bronson C(the pink one😉). It’s the best bike I’ve ever ridden, I do a lot of trail riding, but also street riding on it, Fabio Wilmer style, just not as good. I really want the mondraker dune RR, but with 170mm up front, and long slack geometry, I’d be afraid I couldn’t do street riding on it? Should I just get the thought out of my head and stick with the Bronson? Or could I street ride the slack mondy? Cheers GMBN Tech

    It seems very difficult to understand what rim width and what tire width will equal actual tire width in the end. With each rim and tire manufacturer having so many different standards. Is the only way to know what the end tire width will be is to actually mount the tire and the rim and then measure? For instance, I am curious about running a Light-Bicycle 30mm internal width rim with a 48mm Switchback Hill tire. However, my frame will accommodate 52mm maximum clearance. Will this rim and tire combination equal out to over 52mm? Is there any way I could figure this out before actually buying the rims and tires? Thanks

    I recently installed a new Sram gx 2X10 deralliur to my bike. But when it’s in the highest gear (smallest rear cog) the chain is way too slack until you pull it by hand. Any suggestions on what to do?

    #askgmbn could you please do a video on how to adjust suspension when out on the trail. For example with the Rock Shox ultimate there are so many possible adjustments. Thanks.

    I just got a Niner jet 9 RDO , I’m coming from a 26” and I wanted a 27.5 bike (I’m not a fan of any 29er I have ever ridden) and not sure if you know but the jet 9 rdo is 27.5 plus bike (that can fit 29” wheels) and it comes with 2.8 27.5plus tires on it, my tires being worn out I’m throwing a set of 2.6 DHR 2s on it, I wanted to know if there would be any adverse effects on throwing smaller 27.5 tires on a dedicated 27.5 plus bike that is capable of 29er wheels ?

    I bought a Giant XTC 26+ with a 2.8 inch (71 mm) wide tire but as I ride mostly on tarmac I want to switch to a tire that has a street profile. What is the widest street tire? I found as the widest only 2.5 inch wide tires like Maxxis Hookworm. Aren't there any wider tires for streets?

    My name is Jeff I do fix place on the side and getting back into mountain biking and every type of writing you think of but my question is was the big difference between the hybrid bike with a 700 C rooms and tire to mounting bike like 29 or a 27.5 mountain bike because I am converting a hybrid bike from Academy Sports to a mountain bike with 29 rims and tires instead of the 700c and changing some parts from breaking your combo to a separate braking system like a hydraulic brakes and separate gears from. 8 gears to maybe 10 or 12 gears. 800 millimeter bars with or 45 stem
