    Interesting to see, I mean under 2 minute load times is still pretty impressive. HD may be slower but your going to get a ton more room for the price point. 2 TB for 300+ when I can buy 8 TB for 150 it’s a no brainer, especially with my catalog of games. Awesome video!

    • @YEDxYED
      @YEDxYED 3 роки тому +9

      For now, it’s a no brainer but as time progresses a solid state drive will be what’s required to play certain games.
      Ofc, the catalog is very slim for “true” Ps5 games atm so buying an external HDD is the smart choice for right now

    Thanks so much for this video and your testing! Was just what i was looking for. I have an external HDD i was using on my PS4 and am now using on PS5, but didnt notice much difference in loading times between the consoles. After seeing this I think I'll be copying the games I'm playing atm onto the internal SSD and keeping the HDD purely for storage - especially when I get round to Odyssey!

    Great vid. Like so many others, I was wondering the the SSD speed difference justified the price difference. Especially considering that I'll be primarily using my external drive for storing not playing games. I'll take the extra storage at the lower price point for an HDD. Thanks

      It goes back and forth for me with a good SSD. The Internal SSD can't do any of its fancy stuff on a PS4 game because they're not designed to use any of those features. That's why PS5 games have way faster loading times. Spider-Man Remastered (a native PS5 game) literally never shows a loading screen with splash art like in this video, because everything loads instantly except when initially loading the game at the start of a new game. PS4 Spider-Man still takes awhile to load, because it isn't using any of the features that utilize a combination of the processor and SSD to stream data from the drive or use a wider bandwidth than PS4 games recognized.

    i just want to point out that the vast majority of the time the internal and external load times are close to the same, except for whatever reasons certain load times hang the system and cause one to load slower then the other... its really more system instability rather then drive performance

    • @soapa4279
      @soapa4279 3 роки тому

      Super old comment, but also just pointing out that's not entirely true. It's because the regular PS4 uses Sata II internally (which is only 300mbps), but the external USB port is USB 3.0 (625mbps). So a SATA SSD with a theoretical read of about 550mbps will saturate the external drive more, thus resulting in slightly quicker load times for the games that can actually utilize it.
      With that said, at the end of the day like you mentioned, the loading times are so close anyway it's not really an argument haha.

    • @justinhalen2126
      @justinhalen2126 3 роки тому

      @@soapa4279 this comment was regarding the ps5. But if were talking about internal vs external ssd performance on the base PS4. Digital foundry’s video they did years ago shows otherwise. The internal ssd always was slightly faster compared to the same ssd connected externally. Yes in theory USB 3 5gb/s is more bandwidth than sata II 3gb/s with the OS, game recording and saved data hogging the internal drive as well. It’s very weird but some sort of software or hardware bottleneck (probably motherboard chipset limitation) causing internal ssd to be the fastest way to load games on a ps4 console.

    Next time film with 10X or more so we don't have to wait to see the time lol.
    Is the SanDisk a gen 1 or 2 because gen 2 is twice as fast as gen 1. The fact the SanDisk beats the internal drive is very weird I suspect sony is caping the speed but why. Sony is doing so many weird things with this ps5. Seams like it could be so,much more without all the obstacles and controlled firmware. What I would like to see is sony letting ps5 games play from a ssd drive like xbox does but if the external ssd is in the same specs as the internal then all the next gen stuff still work.

    Division 2 on external hhd on ps5 (moved from ps4 pro per Sony instruction) loads so slow and many things are still brick looking around me, still trying to load texture. I do not recommend external hhd for ps5 users if you expect faster performance. Will be same or worse than playing on ps4 (tried other games as well)

  • @whitefang924

    I think you labelled the benchmark backwards for internal and external ssd. Now way internal is slower than external. The read write speed for external ssd is 400mb - 500mbps where the m2. Nvme is ten times that speed and Sony's recommended NVMe spec says 5.5gbps and above.

      These are PS4 games. They are not designed to take advantage of the full bandwidth of the PS5, it's a limitation at the architectural level that couldn't be properly fixed even with patches. Im assuming this is also why ext. SSD outperforms the PS5's fancy internal SSD in several of these titles.

    • @maxitay2258
      @maxitay2258 3 роки тому +1

      @@DKZK21 Thanks for this comment. The similar performance between the internal SSD and external SSD is due to PS4 games don't taking advantage of the PS5 SSD that is waaaaayyyy faster in theory. We need to wait for more PS5 games. Well current PS5 games have almost no loading times so it already shows the big difference.
