"You're not a person who needs to lose 40 kg. You're a person who needs to lose 1." This made me cry. I've been trying to lose 30 lbs for years. This year, I now need to lose 40 lbs...
But that is so intimidating! So instead, I will focus on 1 lb at a time.
GENUINELY - thank you for this video ❤

I'm very obese. I've been working twice a week with a trainer who is helping me avoid injury and stay mobile. I've walked 10000 steps for 63 days in a row now. I'm seeing a therapist to help with the trauma that is a huge factor in my weight issues. But my biggest struggle is food. I know I will not see a change in my weight until I get food under control but I feel so resistant as every diet I've tried led to rebound. I struggle with moderation. I want to be able to have a treat without losing control. I know that calorie counting is probably the answer. I've always seen calorie counting as being controlled. I find it interesting you describe is as freeing in a way. Maybe changing my mindset around calorie counting could be a big key for me. Thank you for the video. I will definitely follow the series.

I'm pretty sure you'd be able to eat the things you like with some twists and with a slight calorie deficit you'd not even notice, you'd be slowly losing weight. People don't realize how food can be addictive, I know it myself. But taming it and get it to serve you in all ways (mentally, physically, emotionally) without being bad for you, is key.
Diet is just a word for describing what we eat. You don't have to follow any specific (boring) diet to lose weight. Literally 200 cal deficit would still serve your goals 😍. And that's probably nothing for someone your size.
So go for it. Email James and get started. You deserve this change. I'm already impressed with your steps!! Now put some ice on your cake 😊

I've found how James describes calorie counting and by counting over a week rather than a day incredibly useful. I can have that pizza and pint without feeling guilty about it by adjusting calorie intake in the rest of the week to maintain an overall deficit. Was a real eye opener.

When i started calorie counting, I found it helped me a lot that i was more interested in preparing and thus planning my own food. Also, it helps if you plan most of your intake ahead of the rest of the week, that way you only need to tweak some numbers or add a few ingredients for example on a daily base. Nowadays i only check the app for a few minutes a day.

Calorie counting is changing my life. You can still eat things you love, just in smaller proportions. Things like not having the fries with the burger, following portion sizes, etc. You'll find that your deficit is not as bad as you thought.

For women with children, I have to say that I don’t go to the gym. But i did gain 80 pounds when I was pregnant. I’ve lost 50. Started walking to the park, eventually started a at home work out, reduced my calories to 1500, and just recently got a bike with a carrier on it and it is literally the most enjoyable work out ever. Best of luck to everyone on their journey

It’s not my fault but it is my responsibility. I absolutely love this quote! I’ve been following you for a few years now, I’ve bought all your books so far and I’ve implemented so much from you into my own fitness journey and managing my own nutrition. I started using this outdoor gym near by, and oh man the amount of people that stare at me. Like holy crap, someone is actually working out. Any car that drives by, just like gawking right at me, its quite unnerving but I just suck it up because this is who I am now.

Never left a comment on UA-cam before but… when he’s says the universe is telling him to get a dog he drives past a block of flats which is obscured by a bus. When I lived there there was a pet free policy. However I saw a rescue dog and ended up taking her home. Had to move shortly after! The universe is telling you to get that dog and love it. It’s telling me I did the right thing too!

    And I’m happy I did!
    And it’s spot on.
Thank you for this, I needed it.

I'm not obese but I think this was a fantastic video. You didn't lack compassion but you also spoke directly and I think people will relate to that. I think a lot of people fail when the approach is "all or nothing" (e.g. The Biggest Loser contestants all regaining the weight they lost plus more) whereas you are trying to get people to make small gradual changes over time that will stick. Sustainability really is the key. Thanks for the wisdom! X

I wish I heard this when I started trying to lose weight. I'm about a month into it now and learning better habits all the time. Two points that James made that, if you're me, need to be reiterated.
    1. Tracking calories helps, tracking calories properly helps even more. If you're going to do it, do it accurately. I learned that I really seem to enjoy lying to myself and the myfitnesspal app for some reason. Be honest because it's only you that gets screwed in the end.
    2. It takes time and weight fluctuates. At the start, I was glued to the scale because I was getting good results. Once that slowed, or even went up a few pounds on some days, I fucking hated myself for it. I felt like I was working for nothing and I was a failure. Remember, we're just looking. Don't live and die by the daily weigh in. In a few months you can look back at those numbers and think "wow, I can't believe I was worried".

Sat watching this video at 8am getting myself in the right mindset before I go to the gym, but honestly, its had a bigger impact than I was expecting. Listening to you talk about stuff and your views has honestly just helped me reach - what I'd call - a breakthrough. Now I'm not medically trailed or qualified in any way to talk about psychology etc, but your video helped me make a connection in my head.
Growing up my grans was always my safe space, if anything was wrong, or hurt, or anything bad whatsoever my default was - go to my grans and see her. She would always have loads of sweets/cakes/biscuits etc and it seemed like an endless supply and would always "make it ok". I think this is where my connection with so much unhealthy food started, because after I lost my gran to cancer, I think I subconsciously replaced that safe feeling of being at hers, with the consuming of junk food that always tied in with being at her house.
As I said, not qualified in any way whatsoever, but it makes sense in my head, and has honestly helped me kind of rationalise and help to break that connection a bit. Love the videos, please keep it up

Really love how you don't sugarcoat the real issues with obesity. Over the years I've heard it all from oh it's easy for you because you have a high metabolism, or you're young, just wait until you're x age. I don't give any of that crap an ounce of thought now, other than how silly it is. Like James said, staying fit is not easy, it is a whack of small decisions every day. Drive around for 10 minutes to find a parking spot 10 paces from the store? Or just park and walk from the far end of the lot. Save fuel, get some steps in. Elevator? Stairs. Pop? Water. Sit on couch all evening? Go for a walk, or do some bodyweight squats while watching tv. Stop eating that huge breakfast, stop eating right before bed. Stop getting a second, or third plate of food at mealtime. Anyone who says "oh it's easy for you " is only kidding themselves by attempting to discount the difficulty involved with living a healthy lifestyle. They want a stomach reduction surgery, or a magic pill. They want easy.

Used to live in Clovelly, just round the corner from Bronte, so this is giving me massive pangs for the Sydney life. Anyway, I don’t need it, thankfully, but this is a great video as it’s simple, compassionate but real. There’s no getting away from what people need to do to solve this problem, and there’s so much BS out there on the internet. Well done James. 👍

Thank you for this! As someone who's struggled on ALLLLL the diets (WW, Atkins, Paleo, Keto, IF...) I love the idea of identity change and taking responsibility (even if it's not my fault). I'm about to have an appointment with a surgeon for weight loss surgery (stomach stapling and whatnot). I wonder how (or if) you've trained individuals who've undergone weight loss surgery to either remove or partially remove their stomachs. I'm going into this appointment having read about as much as I can (good, bad and worse) to be as informed as possible. There's a lot of stigma around getting the surgery, especially from the body-positive movement (exploitive medical intervention because we should be able to love our bodies the way they are) and weight-loss groups (seen as "cheating" the calories-in vs calories-out equation). I see it as a tool that, when used appropriately, can be extremely beneficial for people who've been unable or seen poor results trying to lose weight on their own. Just wondering what your experience has been and what comments or suggestions you have for people having weight loss surgery.

Hey James, to me this in honestly one of your best, funniest and most personal videos i've watched.
How is it always, that the least watched videos on somebody's channel are the most precious?
Must be the wannabe hipster inside of me talking :D
Love your stuff, but this one in particular!
Greetings from Austria (the better Australia)

I wish this video existed a year ago when I started my weight loss journey. I have gone from morbidly obese to midrange obese, so 23.5 stone to 19.1. I have only recently found your videos I love them .

Could you do a video for people who have lost the weight, where to next?
I reached my goal weight, but I still have a bit of fat I’d like to lose and build a little bit more muscle.
    - should I eat maintenance or deficit to achieve this
    - what kind of workouts would you recommend (I am lazy so trying to keep up at least three per week - what would you recommend?)
    - what other advice would you give to help maintain the losses and not slide back into old habits
    Thanks so much! 😊

I started watching you a couple of weeks ago. I had been in a plateau for 5.5 weeks. I finally was able to break that with help from your vids. I've lost 40 lbs (I know, I know ..USA right?) And have 29 to go. Thank you for the knowledge!

This is great advice. I've been struggling with obesity most of my life. At my heaviest I was 25 Stone then down to 15 (about 15 years ago) but I've plateaued at 20 for years. Now that I've cut booze and other bad habits, I'm slightly down. People forget it's a lifetime commitment, not just for new year's.
Also I agree about getting a rescue dog (A dog is for life, not just for Christmas...). Too many people get dogs from very unscrupulous "people" who breed dogs just for profit at the cost of their health just so they can have a puppy. Thank you James

So many people equate “Its not easy” to I can’t and then provide a scientific or medical reason to justify this to themselves. It breaks my heart because every obese person I see I remember how it feels not to be able to breathe tying my shoelaces, not wanting to look at the mirror as I past it coming out of the shower or being physically fucked after spending 2 minutes playing with my grandson. That’s fucken hard deciding to do something about it, you’re right, isn’t easy but everyone can do it and that’s one of the biggest hurdles “stop lying to yourself just so you don’t have to even try” ❤️‍🩹

I used the calculator on your site, that gave me a goal of 2400cals and 160g protein. the calculator on mfp set me at 1850. In my head, as long as i was between those two figures each day then im good. usually eating around 2000 a day on average, making sure I log everything that goes in my mouth. MFP recently dropped my target from 1850 to 1705, so i dropped the 2400 by the same amount to 2255
To begin with i just stuck to the calorie goal because im fairly active at work (avg around 15000 steps a day) and I lost some weight quite quickly. After a while I bought some dumbbells and began a few weight sets at home. 30 minutes every monday wednesday and friday, varying the exercises i do each time.
Then I added long walks on Monday and Tuesday mornings (my days off work) i was out the house at 3am for a 6 mile walk. Those recently increased to 7 mile walks each time. Few weeks ago I added an extra walk home from work for an extra 4 miles a week. Another couple weeks of this and im gonna begin walking home on thursdays too.
Sunday is the one day I dont do much physical activity, i make sure to stick to my lower end calorie goal this day tho. I treat myself with a dirty meal once every so often when I hit a milestone, my two stone lost meal was a fat chicken burger with chilli cheese fries and a tone of chipotle sauce :D
I'm now 4 months in, and 31lbs lighter, not just in weight but in mood. I recognise now that I was a proper bellend at times, miserable and complaining but doing nothing to fix it. XD now im more smiley, more confident and (at least i think) more pleasant to be around.
Seeing progress like this has helped me physically and mentally, my overall mood is much better, im more energetic and hardworking , Even my asthma has improved, dont even need my inhaler on walks anymore.
Im now at a stage where I cannot wait for monday and tuesday to come around so i can go for my walks. LOVE IT, just me, some music and a lot of sweat! Now that im over 2 stone down, losing the next 14lbs is a goal I can't wait to achieve. On it!
Couldn't have done it without a lot of the advise from your channel mate, much appreciated!

Mark Manson quote, love it! great book! And Houston Texans fan?? What's really fun in the fitness arena is when you (me) need to put on 30lbs and the wife wants to take off 30 lbs. i feel guilty having her watch me down an 800 calorie protein shake first thing in the morning, which is half of her daily allotment. fml
