Toyota Urban Cruiser 1.5 XR Auto Test Review

  • The Urban Cruiser may be the second child born of the relationship between Toyota and Suzuki but I predict it is destined for favourite child status in the family.
    Having had the opportunity to make these twins a bit less identical, Toyota have changed the front end quite considerably and, in my opinion, this looks like a baby Fortuner from the front. That's certainly no bad thing either.
    The Urban Cruiser fits perfectly into the Toyota family as an entry point SUV. The 190mm ground clearance and upright stance confirming this and with the silver/grey skidplates front and rear on XR spec, it looks the part. I can add that we took it on a short stretch of dirt road with some very bumpy and rocky sections. The ground clearance enabled it to handle this with ease.
    The engine is, once again, the Suzuki 1.5l 4 cylinder petrol unit providing 77kW and 138Nm to the front wheels. In this case through a 4 speed torque converter automatic gearbox. There has been plenty of comment regarding the fact that the auto only provides 4 speeds. Looking at this carefully and after driving the vehicle for a few days and over 400km brings out some interesting observations.
    Comparing the auto version to the 5 speed manual I tested a week previously (albeit with twin brother Suzuki badges), I wished that the manual provided a 6th gear because when cruising at 120 in 5th gear on the freeway. This was due to the very high revs at 3500rpm. In the auto, at 120 on the freeway, the revs are at only 3000. This makes a significant difference to overall cruising comfort.
    The downside to the 4 speed auto is that when you encounter any incline while cruising in top, the immediate downshift is accompanied by a rather raucous response from the engine. The only other situation occurs when exiting a long corner, there is a hesitation while the gearbox decides on which ratio to engage. Remember that this vehicle is called the URBAN CRUISER, many owners who seldom venture out of civilization will not notice such issues.
    Another interesting fact to emerge was that the auto version was lighter on fuel than the manual. Obviously conditions are never identical but we achieved mixed use consumption of 6.6l/100km as opposed to 6.8 in the manual.
    Toyota have chosen a very high basic specification level for the Urban Cruiser range and the top XR version includes many features that you would not expect at this price level. 16 inch alloys wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and start, auto folding mirrors, infotainment screen including the Toyota Connect App with wi-fi hotspot and 15 gig of data, reverse camera and the cooled upper glovebox. From a safety perspective, 2 airbags, ABS and Isofix fittings are all standard. I do wish that Toyota would add auto locking on pull-off to the standard spec on all models though.
    Up front, a USB and 12 volt sockets are provided. Not picking on Toyota here but I feel it's time all manufacturers start providing more USB and 12 volt sockets for rear seat passengers, especially in family vehicles. Toyota do score an ace with an extra 12V socket in the boot area.
    To conclude the Urban Cruiser fits into the Crossover/SUV category and gives Toyota a great contender in this segment. We all know that this will be a big seller in SA.
    The test vehicle is currently priced at R314 900 with the range starting from R247 000. A 3 service/ 45 000km service plan is included.

      Correction - Suzuki was the first to come out with the Brezza, Toyota fused with suzuki and brought out the Urban Cruiser. If you want to save money rather go for the Suzuki Brezza GLX, costs less and your service and warranty plan is better than Toyota and here is the shocking news - the toyota and suzuki drives and feels EXACTLY the same. Also worth noting that there are no rear AC vents or rear USB charge points, no ESP, no 360 camera view, only 2 airbags and no leather or sunroof options. I'm really considering this or the Suzuki Brezza, but I will wait for the Kia Sonet, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite out in a month or two before deciding..

    • @MotorMatters
      @MotorMatters  3 роки тому +1

      Take into account that this falls into the budget sector of Crossover/SUV's so many of the items you mention are not standard in this segment. It would be interesting if some could be offered as optional extras like leather and sunroof. I agree with you re the lack of USB points in the rear and feel that these will become the norm for any vehicle that aims at a family buyer soon

    • @francoiswright9729
      @francoiswright9729 3 роки тому +1

      @@MotorMatters In India both the Sonet and Magnite come with rear air vents, rear USB and ESC. The Magnite also has a 360 Cam and the Sonet has 6 Airbags, Front sensors and have a leather and a sunroof option. These are all in the budget SUV section, that's why I mentioned them, but the top models are sure to cost more. The specs may obviously change for South Africa but this is going to be a very interesting segment very soon.
