Fall Pruning Fruit Trees for Beginners

- Fruit trees are a wonderful way to grow food with little effort in your yard. With a little care they can produce large harvests for decades.
The only real work I put into my fruit trees is a little pruning. Pruning will help keep the tree healthy preventing damage and maximizing the yields. In my opinion it also improves how the tree looks in my yard.
My general philosophy is to prune on an ongoing basis. I hope to avoid large prunes all at once.

Thank you. You are much more informative, and to the point than other pruning fruit tree videos.
You answered my question in regards to when to pronely fruit trees with visuals which helped alot.
Fruit trees are so great - they give so much for so little effort. I really like summer/fall pruning like you are doing. I've found summer/fall pruning to really help control the size of my trees. The winter and spring pruning generally causes my trees to put on more growth. So I do whichever is needed for each tree. Enjoy your apple cider!
It certainly does help keep the tree under control which is why I do it. I need to to produce but not get huge as I do not have space for them.
You seem a deal more slim, Stephen and you look great! Diet of organic veggies and fruits is always healthy.
I have slimmed down a touch largely to do with organic fruit and veggies! thanks for noticing!
Thank you ! I am going to plant some pear trees soon so your video is perfect for me!
Great info a first time fruit tree grower thanks for sharing
Great info, Stephen! I've got to get after my plum trees next year for sure!
You can prune them in the fall in your area!!
Was just thinking yesterday when I would watch another of your video's. Great as always Stephen. Totally understandable.
glad you enjoy them my friend!
Excellent. Very understandable. I've done some, tinkering.
Thanks for sharing. 😊
Thank you.
Thank you for this concise video

Interesting! We are going to be planting a lemon tree... this is a lot of great information!
Oh man I love all citrus trees!! I wish I could grow them!
were you able to find a combination tree? if not Ill walk you through grafting :)
Good tutorial and the same methods I follow!
I envy your longer season! You can keep shaping all year I suspect!
Good job! I like!
Thank you! You are much better at managing fruit trees than I!
Nice clip, tumb up. I have 4 Asian pear trees. Omg! Have been 20 years I have not yet prune once. No idea how or where to cut off. It is like 18 feet tall. Now I know why I all the fruits are small. Living in Michigan zone 4-5
A good video
Brother you are garden Very beautiful
OoOoOooO i love your garden
Thank you my friend !

I’m in same zone and I think even same city as you. Planted several whips last year and want to prune them this spring. What month do you usually do your spring prune (and does it matter if it’s too early?)
Thanks alot of help
When should I prune, I'm in Montana
You HAVE to prun tree after planting in your garden. This will help it grow.
Definitely. But I would never prune in the fall. I would wait for full proper dormancy, or better yet, right before spring bud break.
Great information Stephen. I really need to start this. You are still talking fast. Best wishes Bob.
The last bit while my green screen plays I do speak fast but I was certain I had slowed down enough during the video! I will get better ;)
Have a great evening.
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable Yep, still pretty fast. Still though, it's great to get the message across quickly... although if you slowed down a bit you could go into more detail. Anyway, all good.
I was thinking about going into more detail but had a good in depth video from last year and just wanted to touch on the subject and give an update on my grafting :)
can you prune in the fall in northern climates
I planted a pear tree last year and I noticed that only a couple of branches are sprouting. I do see couple of them dead. Any reason for that. Please advise. Thanks!
Hey Stephen, any advice to propagate my zone 3 fruit trees from pruned branches?
If you start an tree from seed and whip graft the pruned scions to your new root stock you might have some success.
I like your video. However none of these rules are written in stone. Each year I cut my trees from 15 feet or more down to 5 feet. The only thing it has done is gotten a bigger peaches. I do this because I refuse to allow any of my fruit trees to get out of control. I have seen what can happen if you do not maintain size. keep up the good work
You are right. It is not in stone but much more of an art.
I had some Asian pear. Before I prune them. I'd like to ask you which way is the best ?
1. Modified leader
2. Open center
3. Central leader.
Hi.
My Apple tree is one foot n in pot inside my house. What action should I take?
Can I prun it? Is that adviseble? Please guide me I am from Red Deer.....
Great video, as always! Stephen, do you know much about saskatoons? I have Northline saskatoon that's about 4 yrs old now, and can't find anything online about how to care for it. As the name suggest, we're just across the border from you, in a zone 2b.
Thanks in advance, and keep up the great work! ~ Mrs. Peace River Prepper
I don't think they require much care at all but I don't have any myself. Is there a specific concern you have ?
Keep dry up there my friend.
Thanks for the speedy response! Pruning is the only real concern I have. I know this variety can get quite large (almost tree-like), and I don't want it to get out of control. For being pretty small atm, it's a great little producer!
Not too wet right now.. been a fantastic year for gardening :)
you can simply top them off if you want to keep them under control. That is what I do with my apple tree to keep is lower to the ground for my consumption ;)
Would the method be the same for a potted loquat? I just bought one so I won't be pruning yet but in the future. . . Looking good, Mister Steven.
for now I would leave it alone. Citrus are a touch different as they generally don't need much pruning.
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable. Loquat, not kumquat. I don't think it is a citrus. Tastes a little bit like a peach. I could be wrong ; )
That sounds interesting!
I like your tree I can't mind at five and six feet
She is a nice tree. I love we a lot !
any experience taking cuttings from trees? i have a big apple tree growing wild down the road i wanted to cut some branches off and plant them in the ground in hopes for them to take root like ive seen people do before but i have found contradicting info on when is the best time to do this if you know what i mean, any idea on when would be the best time to do so? or your best guest.
Cheers
rooting a cutting for apple trees is much harder than one would assume. You are best to find a root stock and whip graft the scion to it.
***** well my neighbor years ago had cut a branch off and planted it right into the ground to get him tree and his brother did the same! but neither could remember what time of year they did it so i was just wondering if you knew what would be my best chance? im thinking probably while the tree would be in full bloom to hopefully take root faster but wanted another opinion
you can do it but when I researched it the success rate was very low. That said I would love to know more if you find out how to do it!
Should be called "pruning an apple tree"?
One tries to make incising titles. its unfortuently a necessity of the craft.
Where can I buy a Macintosh red apple tree on dwarf rootstock? I live in Scotland.
Usually there will be garden Centres that should have what you are looking for.
One shop does them in the UK but they're only 1 year old maiden plants and they're usually out of stock. I'll keep looking.
Sorry I could not be of more help.
