I started my ocean going career on the FLIP and spent my first 10 years aboard the vessel. Truly a one-of-a-kind platform. And sometimes some unbelievable fishing! I’ll always be thankful for the opportunity!
You all prolly dont care but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid lost my login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
It's so cool to see FLIP still in operation. As a 9 year old in 1962 I remember being intrigued by reading an article about this brand new Naval research platform named FLIP, I wish I still had a copy of that issue of Popular Science.
I got to visit FLIP on a high school field trip in the late 60's, it is really cool vessel. I don't think it was the FLIP, but we also got to go out to the kelp beds off San Diego. I remember climbing down a tube and being able to sit in an observation bubble and watch the marine life swim around the kelp. First and last time I saw a sunfish, even though I snorkel dived at La Jolla Cove and the Casa almost every weekend.
Maybe future mini underwater communities can be built on open seas based on the FLIP and 'iceberg' principles with emerging materials and technologies. By adjusting the percentage of submerged parts, the vertical stability of the dwellings can be adjusted according to the roughness of sea surface conditions (i.e. dwellers won't feel significant vibration while there is a storm above the surface). An alternative to underground dwelling development. Plus it could also travel around the world as a ship! Just saying.

It's difficult to believe this was built 50 years ago. So glad that there are people that can imagine and engineer this stuff.

Man, I envy anyone that gets to work on that ship/platform
