She bought an RV at age 82 -- on a whim

- When she was 82, this widow bought an RV on a whim (she named it "Whimsey") and spent the next six years traveling whenever and wherever she wanted, often with just her two dogs as companions. Her daughter was horrified at first, but quickly came to be proud of her mother, and the family sometimes traveled together.
Margie Krogel, now 88, and her daughter Melanie Murphy talk about how Margie came to buy the RV, some of the trips she took in it, the good parts and the challenges, and why they've traded it in for a bigger one now that Margie is older.

This is how we ALL should be living out our lives, not in extended care. Love how supportive her daughter is.
Agreed!
Yes indeed! An inspiration to the rest of us ♥♥♥
Right
I’m 82 and finishing an 8,000 mile trek around the US. My adult children, grandchildren and great grandchildren live all over the country. Every year I go visit them and explore our beautiful nation.
Nice.
This is one of the most inspiring stories I've seen about taking risks when we're older. You're daughter is so positive.
Hello I am another “old” solo lady RVer. Still driving and camping at age 92 in Florida. I make a couple trips a
year to Tennessee and Virginia to visit family but spend the most time In Florida. Next winter if I am still able, I plan to go to Quartzsite AZ for the winter. My son plans to go in his own rig and that will be helpful. I drive a 28’ Class A Motorhome. Doris. The TREKnlady!
Wow, GOOD FOR YOU! I think I speak for a lot of us when I say you are an inspiration!
Wow Doris, I'm only 73, thanks for the boost.
Fantastic! Keep up the good work!!
It’s not the destination; it’s the journey. That doesn’t end in your older age. In fact, I love that she is living the life SHE wants to live with her dog and loving family support. Many blessings for many journeys ahead!!!
❤been practicing this most of my life, one of my favorite saying 😊
Congratulations to this Awwwmazing family.❤🎉
At 76 years of age, I have been thinking of selling my house and transitioning to 'RV life'. Margie's story is very inspiring and encouraging for me.
I hope you can do it! Best wishes.
Make sure you're on regular Medicare not an Advantage plan if you need extended care out of your home area while travelling.
👋 I am a full time vanlifer at 62! Been for 7 years now and LOVE IT! In the nomad community there is a large number of senior women who live in a variety of vehicles. I spent the winter in Quartzite Az in the desert and befriended many many seniors hanging out in the desert! And I mean, IN the desert! It is the most amazing life, but also been a literal life saver for many facing homelessness or abusive situations.
And I’m a retired dance teacher too! My childhood training in Jacksonville Florida ❤
What coincidences! Sounds like she practically told your story! I’m glad you’ve found such a satisfying life and community.
Margie is so inspiring!! And I love how supportive her daughter is. Thanks for sharing their story.
I know-such an amazing story and I loved talking with them.
We all need friends like Bonnie that say Yes, I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't, plus a hundred reasons why you should live your best life. And thanks, Dennis, for the test run.
Wow , I truly admire this senior! 👏👏👏👏👏
She doesn't even look 88 ! 😮
And to buy that rv at 82 years of age is BOLD !!!
HUGE KUDOS to have a daughter and son in law to be by your side like they are ! Taking planes to get to you etc . ❤
God bless them . 🤗
I have no desire to do something like this because I'm lucky if I make it to the mall and back without getting lost !!
My sense of direction is off the charts !!!! 😢
But like you said , your health needs to be up to par, etc .
May God bless and keep you safe as you live your best life in your new home .
😇🙏✝️
You just made my day! So excited for you! Beautiful RV…..you’ll have a blast! ♥
I’m 65. I’ve been looking and looking for one. I would go in a heartbeat!!
I hope you do! It sounds pretty good to me too.
Sixty-five is young! Do it if you can. I love my Class C.
Oh, if you don't you'll always wonder ❤❤
I’m in my 70’s and retired. I am saving money for my dog and I to hit the road with my new rv or maybe just my van.
Good for you! I hope it’s great.
Buy a travel insurance policy that will tow you to a shop if you break down.
I’m 81 and live in zephyrhills and I want to go so bad my husband won’t go I’m lost 😢love the idea of being able to be free thank you so very much
Linda
My husband and I are 80 and he just wants to sit in front of the tv.
I have been reading on line all the rv stories and decided to buy a travel trailer since I have a pick up truck to tow with. Had a visit with my banker as to how much they would finance for me. A used one showed up nearby and I convinced him to go with me to see it. Long story short I bought it. Am now cleaning it up...had not been used for a couple of years...and we'll be heading out to one of the lakes near us in a couple of weeks.
I know that will be the last time he'll want to go, but I have some girl friends and we will make good use of it.
You can do it too. Go for it.
Good for you! I hope you have many happy adventures with your husband and/or friends!
@@lindalodovice6340 many women travel alone when their husband wont go there are sights on youtube that you should check out.
Way to go! At 81-just getting out on the road myself.
God Bless, Very Brave!!!! Cheers
Absolutely love it!!!!!! From a 73 year old grandma.
How awesome is that. I love seeing these ladies in their 80's (and younger) in the dancing groups too. I think it's great that she took a chance and got out there and traveled and conquered any apprehensions she might have had. You go Girl!
I agree!
As soon as I heard “my Jeep”….”dancing”… I knew she was a very cool and energetic woman. I hope I can be like this when I’m her age…
My 1st two RVs were Jayco. ❤ The van part croaked, but the "house" was 100%. Should have donated it for homeless housing.
Now in a Leisure Way on a Sprinter, nice build, but $service$ on Mercedes is $$ and long waits b/c not enough Sprinter techs for the work load.😢
This is so inspiring. A great alternative to enjoy our elderly stage of life. Wonderful!
It really is!
Margie and D-D. You two are a hoot! I love you both so much!!!!
Good for you! We only live once! Enjoy the ride!😊
A very lovely YOUNG adventurous lady... Happy trails..!! 👍👍
I am currently 70 and have been living in an RV for 4 years finally got to start my travel journey and am workamping. My first job was in Texas then Oklahoma now in Michigan. My winter plan is to be in Arizona. Its a good life meeting people building friendships.

I’m 58 and trying to figure out how to get my first motor home ❤
I hope you find a way to do it!
This was a wonderful interview! She is an inspiration! 👏😀🌿
Thank you. She is!
Awesome..Thank you for sharing.
Good for you !
She speaks so clearly!! Amazing!
Sweet story!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Inspiring ❤❤❤
I can't wait for part 2! Does the Whimsey owner have a facebook or UA-cam page? She is wonderful, and that is what I hope my children will act like when/if I get a chance to strike out on my own. I can't afford an RV, so I'm hoping for a van. Yes, I like the fact that in a bus (in her case an RV) that you are up where you can see what's going on in front of you and anticipate your next move. I drove a 22 foot box truck, and never had a problem backing it up. She is a great inspiration! I hope to see more about her.
Part 2 is here: ua-cam.com/video/2MX38_EDVoI/v-deo.html. I agree with how great Margie (and her family) are! Good luck with your dreams.
Oh wow absolutely awesome. Live your life ❤❤❤❤
Hi, I am 82 and going out in a C Winnebago. My husband and I started three years ago together but now he doesn’t want to go. He is a tennis player and plays with his buddies sooooo. I would love to find some folks to caravan with for safety. I am near Indy.
Consider looking at that Facebook group for solo women RVers, which Melanie mentioned in the video. Good luck getting back out there!
Thank you. Congratulations 🎉
I'm trying to get my crap together & get out there with you all. Plan is for January 2026. Sounds like forever away. I'm guessing it's going to be here quicker than I realized. Time seems to fly for me. ✌️😁
So incredible ❤
I love that, Granny Pod. We call RVan a rolling hotel suite. Easier to eat real food in my own kitchen than finding healhlth food in restaurants.
fantastic!
Aren’t they great?!
😮so beautiful 😊
Yes….I'm sure her husband will be right there with her in Whimsy on her adventures. What a positive and cool lady!
How awesome.❤
You should blur her license plate. Huge safety issue.
Thank you for thinking of that, but she doesn’t own this one anymore.
how so? Everyone sees your license plate when you're driving. What's the difference?

❤ It!
go go go girl
You go gurl
Dont sell your house, as we get older our bones body starts to hurt, and we allow down, its ok to buy an ev, but keep your comfort house.😊
My house is a headache, so much I have to do to maintain it
Some UA-camr have had close calls
I sure hope it was built before 2019! You should never buy an RV “on a whim.” I hope you didn’t get taken advantage of
She didn't buy it on a whim. Her and her husband had been talking about it for a long time plus she didn't buy the first time she saw the RV. She's a grown woman not a child.
@@Starfish2145 she did what she felt was right and enjoyed herself.
