What I love is that not only does Felix loves and supports Pepa, he constantly woos her. A kiss, a thouch, dancing. Even in the table scene, he doesnt say much but just calls her "amor" or "darling/love". Awsome husband and Dad along with Augustin.

I adore Felix. He’s adorable. While in that one situation it looks like he’s over-caretaking, he’s probably had to over the years. Abuela running such a tight ship, and unfortunately poor Pepa is the most obvious problem. She’s probably under SO much stress. At least others can pretend to be perfect, Pepa is constantly criticized, and that probably magnified the problem. I love how he glared at Abuela for putting so much pressure on her in that difficult situation.

Both Felix and Mirabel's father (I suck at names) have this strong, determined attitude where they will always side with their wives and support them when they think Alma is out of line. And that's just so beautiful, especially because they do it without once disrespecting her, or anybody else around them. Even when others are being overly harsh to Mirabel, Felix and her dad are both just kind and wholesome figures in her life.

Yeah, and in that one scene, even though he is trying to dissolve the cloud for Pepa, when Pepa yells about how she's trying, he immediately agrees, seeming annoyed with abuela, not Pepa. He sees that she's trying, and is there as her unwavering support, and I think that is beautiful.

I think everyone deserves their very own "Félix", whatever that may mean in a particular case. Naturally - not everybody can be the same way and that is good and proper. Everybody has very strong qualities and just deserve to find that other person, whose qualities reinforce their own and bring out the best in them. That does not always mean, that you have to be positive and only ever supportive. Sometimes people need the exact opposite and it is up to us to know when that time comes. That's the beauty of relationships, I guess. :-) Aaaaanyways - what was I on about? :-D Oh right - Félix is the best character ever! :3

Felix is one of my favorite characters. I adore how he supports Pepa, and how he seems so close with the whole family. Like when the house is falling, he's one of the ones yelling the loudest for Mirabel to get out, really showing how much he notices and cares for everyone in the family.
I also think it's neat that it hails at the end, because we see that Pepa has rain when she's flustered/frustrated/generally upset, and that it turns into snow when she's spiraling. So it seems like hail is what happens when she accepts and is able to release those emotions without fear of judgment, and I think that's really beautiful.
I alsl personally don't think he was being an over-carer in the scene where Pepa was snowing. I think he just recognized that having snow falling on Pepa wouldn't help her calm down so he's trying to dissipate the cloud so she doesn't get cold and wet. We later see her shaking and Camilo giving her a cup of tea, which we can infer is because she is stressed, but since she was just being snowed on, it could also be that she's shivering and cold and Camilo got her tea to simultaneously help warm her up and calm her down. He takes a lot after his dad, it seems

Pepa and Felix are like the non Gothic version of Gomez and Morticia Addams, and it's so wholesome and cute. Also, shoutout to Brenden Frazier and the leading actress (ahhh I always forget her name) in the Mummy 2 for being so loving and supportive of each other. I'm glad you did one about Felix! With all the larger than life powers in the family overshadowing them, it would be easy to ignore Felix and Augustin. But yes, Felix is great! I picture him as the first person in Pepa's life to tell her, "It's okay! It's not as bad as all that!" and actually make her believe it! Everybody needs one of those in their life!

It could definitely make a great slice-of-life drama/comedy series, but unfortunately I doubt Disney could resist turning it into an action adventure superhero thing with the kids battling villains or whatever, which would spoil what makes it so good.

I have a take at the end, generally about their powers not about the mental health of anyone but extremely important all the same:
I think, Under Mirabel's front door, they all have more control over their power. So instead of Pepa controlling the weather with her emotions, I feel like she's making it hail on purpose.
I'd like to think that like, Dolores' hearing got the ability to tune out things she doesn't want to hear (imagine hearing everyone in the town's intimate lives since you were five. poor girl.), maybe Bruno's visions got clearer, etc. I'd like to think, under a healthier family dynamic where everyone is healing, the powers got to a point where they weren't actively harming the users. Pepa and Dolores both got really short ends of the stick in terms of magic. I think Mirabel got off easy in not getting a power because if I had super hearing where I couldn't tune out things within a mile, I wouldn't want it. Nor would I want a depressing raincloud following me around all the time when I was sad! It'd be perpetual because the rain would make me MORE sad and I'd get frustrated and upset. So seeing Pepa HAPPY and dancing in the hail-- because clearly she's happy in that animation by her facial expression and the love and support of her family and getting her brother back, I think it means she has more control over her power and I can only hope that also extends to Dolores.
In that situation, I think Felix is looking at her happily because she FINALLY no longer has to live with the burden of the rainclouds above her head when she was upset and he knew her struggles with those things intimately.
The scene is SO sweet, no matter how you slice it. Felix is such a good person and he gets brushed over a lot being a husband of who is basically a side character.
I'd argue that the main characters are Mirabel, Abuela, Bruno, Isa, and Louisa.
Isa and Louisa getting their own songs, Mirabel being the "Main" Main Character, Abuela being "antagonistic" inadvertently, I don't think the story has an antagonist but she kind of messed things up without meaning to even if she came to in the end, and Bruno being the one Mirabel seeks out and returns to the family.
Everyone else seems sort of sidelined. Putting it into perspective, even if you consider, let's say, Dolores a "main character" because we see her interact with Mirabel a handful of times and she also has her own arc with Mariano and we get to look deep into her longing for him before she gets with him at the end. She has an arc and is the catalyst for the family knowing about the magic being destroyed, so despite not having a full song maybe she's a "main character" (a fan favorite too tbh), we rarely ever see Pepa in a meaningful way.
We don't get to see Pepa interact with Mirabel directly outside of We Don't Talk About Bruno. We see her freaking out in the background to express how her power is such a pain in her butt, then we see her in the beginning of the group song. I wouldn't say she has an "arc" other than being able to sort of control her powers at the end and reuniting with Bruno, but she shares that with Mirabel's Mom. That doesn't mean she isn't important, but it means she sort of got the short end of the stick not only with a shitty power, but in the plot of the movie, too!! I would've loved to see an internal struggle with her power and talking to Mirabel or saying "I HOPE THE MIRACLE DIES" out of frustration and thundering as she says it before breaking down and having her husband comfort her. I wish we got to see more about how much her "miracle" effected her mental state and caused her to spiral. The movie tackled Louisa's cracking under pressure really well, so I think they could've tackled that, too. I wish Pepa got a song about Emotional Management and always being forced to suppress your feelings so other people aren't inconvenienced, and about mentally spiraling down a bad path. Lots of weather themes like when she says "Great! Now I'm thundering.. And a thunder will lead to a drizzle, and a drizzle will lead to a sprinkle---" I want a weather based song about her emotions and how controlling them is so unhealthy but she's terrified not to or it'll effect everyone around her negatively. She's traumatized, afraid of another hurricane or a tornado or something that will affect the Encanto and the family catastrophically, but she isn't allowed to feel and process those emotions for exactly that reason, until the end of the movie where the burden is lifted off of her and she's freely able to dance around in the hailstorm. If we got a parallel to that in her song where she was dodging giant blocks of ice/hail as her heavy thoughts come crashing down around her and corner her I think that would be a really great callback as at the end, all of the hail is just bouncing off of her as her worries faded due to her control over her power.

Felix is indeed a delightful character, always supportive of Pepa. Notice that they always wear the same colors, too. We get to see him in interplay with both of his sons, but I don't recall that he interacts much with Dolores. But then, consider: his name means "happy," while hers means "sorrowful." How did that happen?

According to the creators, Felix is a few years older than Pepa and the others, and I wonder if that plays into the caretaking/protectiveness as well. Thanks for the video! Honestly, Felix and Augustin raised my standards for seeking out a partner. Thanks for pointing out now Felix says Mirabel needs to know about Bruno. I didn't even notice that at first.
How I see the scene that was maybe him being over-supportive was that Felix got annoyed or angry with Alma there and was supporting his wife, while in his own way, telling Alma to back off. The whole family was spiralling in that scene with their gifts glitching and the miracle under threat. And Alma's anxiety-driven controlling behaviour here was not helping. I loved this scene with Felix. Felix reminds me to enjoy things, enjoy myself, and enjoy the people around me.

I love your costumes for every character!! It's lovely to hear how happy Felix is overall -No wonder his name literally translates to Happy-. I do have to wonder, with such a supportive caretaker, where was Felix for Mirabel through the movie? Did he try to help but mostly unable because of the hold that Abuela had on the family? Or did he only focus on his family and didn't have enough to give to Mirabel?

If you watched other translations of “We don’t talk About Bruno”, all of them retain Felix’s sweetness, up-beat ness, and supportiveness of Pepa. And his next-to final line of “what a joyous day but anyway” is rephrased to fit the music but keeps his personality of trying to calm Pepa and focuses on more than just the negatives.
And I loved that all the translations kept that despite the difficulties of keeping in line with the beat and matching the animated mouth movements

Felix is such a sweet guy, he is exactly what Pepa needed in her stressful life where she isn't allowed to express her emotions freely otherwise things get messy for everyone because of her powers.
That said there is one scene where I felt she was unnecessarily being mean to Felix, in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" when he kept interjecting to add more details to the story she angrily told him to stop it as if saying "Shut up or I'll leave", also she called it "my" wedding instead of "our" wedding despite Felix being right there with her, it's understandable that Pepa is always on edge because of the pressure she is under, but I just didn't like seeing a nice supportive guy like Felix getting a bit mistreated by her.

Would it be possible to be like Felix, always seeing the positive in every situation - except for yourself? Like you can see the positive side for everyone else, but when it comes to your own life and your own situations you just can't?
I think Felix trying to help Pepa calm down her emotions in the beginning of the movie is because it's what she wants to not upset Abuela. If Pepa had said she wanted to just let it go and not care about Abuela, Felix would've probably been all about that too. He's such a bean

I love these deep dives on all the characters, though I would've loved a deep dive on Pepa and Félix's kids too. I know they didn't get as much attention as Maribel and her sisters, but I couldn't help but notice how Camilo and Delores's characters had developed in a way that would've lined up living in an overall dysfunctional family, and especially if you have a mother whose spiraling moods affect everyone else in the house. Obviously this is just my interpretation:
Camilo, to me, seems like the jester, the one who tries to make everyone smile -- he makes jokes to make Antonio feel better when Maribel brings him out of hiding, and you see him trying to calm down and comfort Pepa after the proposal dinner is ruined, perhaps as if he felt it was his job to help diffuse tension caused by his mother's volatile moods. He literally and figuratively adapts in a chameleon-like way, becoming different people to play different roles, for example, turning into "another Jose" to put up a banner, or changing into an unidentified mother in the intro song to let the mom take a break from taking care of her baby. As someone who grew up constantly being aware of my own mother's volatile moods, I took on a similar role, trying to keep her in a good mood to diffuse tension, and agreeing to help and adapt with any role without question to help keep her happy. Also, I only very recently made the connection between the similarities between "Camilo" and "chamelon," lol.
With Delores, she is very quiet and softspoken. We can definitely attribute her personality to her powers, tho honestly this could be true of a lot of the characters, as these powers are excellent metaphors for the roles each family member plays in dysfunctional families. Being especially sensitive to sounds probably means her own voice would be much louder to herself, hence her speaking in near whispers. But in "We Don't Talk About Bruno," her lines explain how she "grew to live in fear" of hearing all the sounds of Bruno in the house, putting her on edge. When the cracks start forming during the proposal dinner, she is seen covering her ears as if she is totally overwhelmed by the sound. In addition, her having a mother like Pepa, who can speak very explosively and creates thunderclouds that would be extra jarring to someone with super hearing (I myself hate thunder because I'm very easily startled), I could see how Delores could be inclined to stay quiet and out of the way, and might be living on edge. It makes me think of the more sensitive people in dysfunctional families, who often notice things others in the family don't and who are often overwhelmed more easily by tension and who can only do what they can to stay out of the way.
I don't think Antonio even got a chance (or maybe was just too young) to reveal any sort of quirk or character growth, so I got nothing for him. I'm just super jealous that his power is being able to have an emotional support jaguar who accompanies him everywhere.
Obviously Félix plays such a huge role in helping Pepa regulate her moods and perhaps even neutralizing some of the effects they would have had on the family without him and I absolutely love his character, but there's no doubt Pepa and her gift would still be a source of tension for the kids.

I always assumed Felix didn't have an issue with Bruno, even in the song he never said anything bad about bruno, he just stated facts. Pepa said "bruno came in with a sinister grin" did he really? More than likely at the end brunos story was "didn't mean to be upsetting. that wasn't a prophecy, I could just see you were sweating" so he wouldn't come in with sinister intent, but in pepas memory of the event she was so mad that that's how she chose to remember him. But Felix just said thing like "it was a nightmare" referring to the day not "he was a nightmare" referring to Bruno and "he would see something terrible" then "it would happen" never "he would make it happen" the only negative thing he said about bruno was "why did he tell us?" So he was understandably upset but even in his memories of bruno he never villainized Bruno like Pepa did... So I don't think he held a grudge even if he was upset or mabie just hurt... He was literally the only one that didn't cast Bruno as someone to fear

I kinda have a problem with the sentence that "he's always gonna be that warm, happy, safe place to land".
Like you said in other videos about Luisa, when you're always there for other people, they start expecting you to always be there. As well as when you're really good at something, they'll always expect excellence. I hear such a great weight of expectations in this sentence - not that I think you intended it that way, to be fair you did also mention that it's important that Pepa learns how to deal with her own emotions and for Felix to take care of himself but I think it kinda shows how automatic it can be to built high expectations for someone we admire.
Maybe I'm just projecting my experiences with emotional parentification and there isn't enough screentime to judge this but I feel like there are actually some areas where you could question weather Felix's relationship with Pepa is 100% healthy that people completely overlook... And Antonio too!
You can see both Felix and Antonio take on a caretaker role towards Pepa but you never see her doing the same towards them on the film. This seems like a quite one sided relationship, as it comes to taking care of each other and it's important for the caretakers to also be taken care of by their partners equally. It is a difficult role to be support person of someone neurotic and often spiraling, to always be calm and calm them down, always be kind and understanding. When it seems easy on the outside it can also create quite a lot of pressure for other people close to this person to behave similarly. It's interesting for me that they chose shapeshifting as Antonio's gift. Like with the baby, he literally turns into a someone that a person he helps needs the most. When he was calming Pepa down with tea and she accidentally struck him with lightning, he turned into almost every adult person in the house. I think it might be understood as a metaphor of a person who also, like many of the characters there, is limited to his role as a perfect caretaker - taking on different faces depending on someone else's needs and hiding his own. And also shows the reality that while it's not Pepa's fault that her emotions affect her surrounding and she can't help it sometimes, nonetheless they can hurt her loved ones, people who take care of her.
Notice that Antonio is in many ways very similar to his father - cheerful, warm, caring, joking around and dissolving the tensions. I think about how it must feel growing up with a mother who can struck you with lightning when she gets too upset and a father that plays the role of a perfect caretaker all the time. Implicitly it sets a standard of expectation as it comes to interacting with Pepa that could be very difficult for a kid. Both because otherwise he would be worse than his father, so wanting to uphold the image of a good person and also out of fear, how Pepa's moods might affect him is he adds his own difficult emotions to her spiraling.
It potentially doesn't leave much space for Felix's and Antonio's difficult emotions and expressing them in relationship Pepa freely. If they're seen as always this positive, warm, safe space it takes away some space for making mistakes too, getting mad, being authentic with their feelings and thus being able to allow Pepa to take care of them too, equally.
And I don't mean it in a way that Pepa expressing her emotions is toxic but in relationships like these it is extremely important to pay attention to reciprocity and also not feeling responsible for someone else's emotional states - it is just a matter of good communication, setting boundaries and creating healthy mechanisms of dealing with difficult situations. Which can be oftentimes overlooked, because we assume that is someone is very loving and optimistic they must feel equally loved, happy and healthy which is not always the case.

    • @huflepufle8261
      @huflepufle8261 2 роки тому

especially that the caretakers sometimes may be so used to often reassuring a person with neurotic personality, that they can express their emotions freely and that they're not a problem, that if sometimes they do experience difficulty or be hurt by them, it might be completely buried in unconscious to make themselves believe that it's never ever a problem too.

    • @huflepufle8261
      @huflepufle8261 2 роки тому

Honestly, to think about it, Pepa did blame Bruno for "making her" spiral and causing hurricane at her wedding with his observation that Pepa looked anxious and Felix was angry at him for it too - "why did he tell us?". Which shows that there might be this expectation, that you cannot tell Pepa some upsetting things or observations or you'll be held responsible for the emotional outcome. Although Felix does tell her about Bruno's prophecy at the dinner party nevertheless, so maybe I'm wrong and it was more about blaming Bruno for everything

I think Felix is moving beyond deference to his wife and moving toward subservience. Almost an edge of fear.
His position relies entirely on his wife, who's a Madrigal. His position relies entirely on her good will, giving her an exceptional amount of power over him.
