We also need to talk about the parents of those with ADHD. It’s typically inherited, this is not environmental. Brains are simply different and this is coming to light. Older adults with ADHD are struggling with late life diagnosis and understanding how ADHD came to be is important. I think both myself and my sister have it. She passed away from cancer so was never diagnosed but she struggled with more typical ADHD symptoms being less attentive in school and having behavioral issues. I was the opposite, A+ student, no behavior issues. From what I can see my mother had it and quite possibly my great grandmother in my fathers side. We also need to talk about the multitude of comorbidities that can make ADHD more difficult like OCD, anxiety and depression. If this Mom had 3 kids then 1 or both parents likely have it too or a grandparent has it. It’s unfortunate that people don’t want to talk about that. It’s helpful in diagnosing adults who are struggling with it who don’t know they have it and just assume that only their child has it.

From what I have had, it can have genetic, environmental, and central nervous system factors.
      So yes, genetic...passed down
Environmental...like lead poisoning is tied more to it
nervous system...if something wasn't going well like in childhood medical issues and nervous system didn't develop normally or best

CBS watch russel barkleys lectures (especially the ones he gave to parents once (its on youtube) your mind will be blown and youd be the first news channel that does not have 1970 adhd underatanding mixed with lots of intuition from 1990 nonexperts and therapists without any research experience.
Mr Barkley is the most cited adhd scholar/researcher not some alternative medicine guy by the way if u feel more comfortable.
He is my personal hero by the way.

Someone please tell Gayle to stop interrupting during panels and interviews! This has been an ongoing problem and for all the millions she makes, you would think someone or many would bring it to her attention and hold her accountable💯

I think I have adhd but I never been diagnosed with it. I tend to be in my own world and do multiple things as once and I had behavioral problems when I was younger.

Nobody mentioned it in this interview here, but I do hope the documentary touches upon one key difference between children of today and children of yesteryear who are adults today: TECHNOLOGY! Even though that one older guy at the beginning of this video described his brain as being like a computer keyboard being sat upon, the sensorial effects of technology on children and adults know no bounds. You can't even turn on your computer, phone, iPad, laptop, or tablet anymore without a bunch of windows popping up onscreen right and left after you log in. Naturally, your eyes pick up on their visual presence while your ears pick up on any and all audio signals that chime at you. When all of those jolts come at you at once, your brain gets overwhelmed in an effort to (as that other person afflicted with ADHD addressed) "juggle all the balls going through your brain and not knowing where each of those balls is or came from". So the more technology people/children use, the worse their ADHD will be in the long run, especially if they already have it.

Do you know that to be true scientifically? That more technology leads to worse adhd outcomes? Maybe, maybe not. I'm concerned this might be misinformation. I mean yes, technology can be overwhelming...but it could also help someone who is creative, curious, and able to hyperfocus learn a lot...so it could be a good tool for someone with adhd. I'm honestly not sure, but I would like to see a more research-based thought on this rather than you stringing together that it is necessarily bad.

There have always been neurodivergent people, it's just more recognised now. Technology can be a real positive for neurodivergent kids and adults too. It can be very regulating (within the context of a balanced life). There's plenty of research supporting good use of technology.

Curious if this documentary dispels the thought that you “outgrow” ADHD. Does it expand on how girls present different than boys, and that a large number of girls impulsivity and hyperactivity is internalized and many end up battling anxiety? I get it comes with superpower-type qualities but does this show identify ADHD as a struggle with executive function and emotional regulation?

It's simple: Social construction of gender makes symptoms show differently. When I show visible frustration, people look at me as subhuman, so I internalize it more. I can be writhing in pain inside my head, but I can't let it show. It's literally that simple.
“Eventually you can't help but figure out that, while gender is a construct, so is a traffic light, and if you ignore either of them, you get hit by cars. Which, also, are constructs.”

Very good Questions from the Moderators. Usually there is a insane positive bias to adhd. Maybe becuase the famous people with adhd are statistically the mildest adhd and the most successful people of all people ever diagnosed with adhd. Maybe they are all misdiagnosed and those are the only ones getting sympathy and falsly attributed "on the bottom made it to the top" fame

They are promoting a documentary. And maybe your community is reluctant to go public with an illness because of past stereotypes regarding their mental health and abilities. Not everyone wants to go public about an illness.

@@towritemichelle210 Thats not what this documentary is about. Its about how ADHD affects you. Representation is nice, but its definitely not needed for something like this and trying to shoehorn it in without careful consideration would probably just make the documentary worse.
