    Apologises if this video feels relatively rushed. I'm super busy in work at the minute so I don't have much time. However, to make up for that, the next video is going to be a longform retrospect on a special trilogy starring Bruce Campbell.

      probably bc they were trying to adapt a hugely successful book series into a tv series with a very limited budget. i think that AYAOTD probably had a bigger budget that Goosebumps. it's kinda obvious when u look at the monster fx for two famous episodes: Horrorland and Dead Man's Float. The Horrorland Horrors were very fake looking rubber suits whereas the pool creature was (and still is) terrifying

    haha, I'm going to be honest, The Frozen Ghost was one of the episodes that actually stuck with me/ was more memorable. I don't know why, I guess it was because it was so down to earth as opposed to the other episodes where you could laugh it off because you knew the "monster" was not real/natural. In this ep the "monster" was a real little boy who died of "natural causes"- freezing to death, all because someone was trying to rob his house (not a monster but another human) I guess to my child mind, I hadn't realised you could die so easily from something like exposure and death doesn't make exceptions for children, esp ones trying to find safety. But that was me then. Now I see the camp in the episode, but the show as a whole is still classic!

    Channel Zero could have been a modern-day Goosebumps, Are You Afraid Of The Dark and Tales From The Crypt. Unfortunately, they decided to go the American Horror Story route and stretch out one-page stories into hours of television. The show could have covered different creepypasta each episode. What a shame.

    • @TheAntiSanta
      @TheAntiSanta 6 років тому +42

      Shows like American Horror Story, where there's a whole season before you jump to a new story, tend to be more successful these days, than your Episodic Anthology Shows. Sure, Black Mirror is going strong, but can you name a single show like it, that's gotten more than one Season, since like Masters of Horror?
      Plus, No End House was pretty great, and I don't think I'd have liked it as much, if it's been a single episode sandwiched between Jeff the Killer and The Rake, or some other really popular, but extremely nothing Creepy Pasta.

    • @TheGrayEsteban
      @TheGrayEsteban 6 років тому +13

      Dragon Ball Black I like Channel Zero, but I do think they take away a lot of the qualities of the creepypastas the seasons are based on. Although I found some of the ideas in the new season really good, the season is the epitome of having almost no relation to the original stories (besides taking away all the subtlety that made the staircases scary in the first place).

    • @Lupostehgreat
      @Lupostehgreat 6 років тому +5

      The Fantastic Paul this is a good point, and I was just thinking that. Black Mirror isn't even a horror series, but a sci-fi series, so there is even less to say that the kind of serial anthology horror series like Tales From The Crypt, Tales From The Dark Side, etc would find success, nowadays. Nowadays everything is built for binge watching, which means that it will be rare to find shows that are episodic, outside of sitcoms. Episodic shows tend to satisfy a viewer after one or two episodes, while serials tend to keep you hooked as they are set up like chapters in a book. I don't hate serials, I just wished we had some more episodic shows thrown in that aren't sitcoms or cop dramas.
      On another note about Masters of Horror, I think the biggest problem with that series was that the title of the show set you up for disappointment. Too much anticipation for a bunch of stories that were about the same horror quality as any entry at The After Dark film festival.

    Haha, it's great to watch these retrospective videos on old nostalgia 90's shows, especially Nick ones.
    When I was a kid, I could barely get past the into to this show. It was frightening.
    My vote is for you to do some sort of analysis on the Hey Arnold series, particularly on the spooky themed episodes since you're leaning more into that vibe lately. The show still holds up to this day for an older cartoon show. And, since the network is in a crucial decision-making process right now on whether to make more episodes for a new series, I think any media talking about it and getting the word out would be fantastic.
    Thanks Ryan! Keep up the great work!

    I don't really remember much about the midnight society themselves since I was maybe 4-7 when I was really watching it (and mostly reruns at that point as it was the mid-90s) and the stuff that obviously stood out to me were the horror aspects (though FYI I anticipated and watched the shit out of that phantom silver eyed horse (?) movie they made years later). My fav episode, though, was always the dollhouse one, where the girl got trapped and was slowly turning into a delicate porcelain doll I've heard several people agree with that and I think it's interesting that that episode sticks in so many people's minds. The other horror focused show I really loved was so weird and I think that was the first show I actually followed the drama/characters for , rugrats aside since that was episodic)

    Hello Ryan. As an aspiring filmmaker I have to say that your videos are definitely some of the best I have ever seen. Your attention to detail is quite incredible to me. I've been dealing with a lot of personal issues involving depression for the last two years and can honestly say that coming across your videos helps put my mind at ease. I have hopes that I will make it in the industry some day but can at times hold myself back from writing ideas that I have had. I just wanted to thank you and to tell you that what you're doing is amazing. Keep it up and I wish the best for you and your future, whatever it may bring.

      Yea like at one point my mom's and my prescriptions were close enough that we could share glasses if need be. (Like one time hers broke and so while they were getting fixed she'd borrow mine to read menus at restaurants or drive or whatever)
      However if his vision is THAT bad... I'd imagine that trying to even just see his way in finding new glasses would be difficult. However yea, they're just cracked by the looks of it, so he could potentially just do a patch job, go find another pair with a close enough prescription, and then start using those instead. Cracks in his otherwise clear visual field is probably better than total blurriness. However it depends on the severity of the damage. But yea; the hunt could even provide him with the mental stimulation he needs.

He had found a gun earlier and decided not to kill himself, but after he could no longer see the precious books that painted a happier future in this wasteland, I always assumed he stumbled back to where he'd found it and killed himself. No longer able to quench his loneliness.

    You really are one of my favorite film people on UA-cam. While most critics (usually the more comedic ones) would simply brush off shows like this as “stupid, but fun for kids!”, you really dive into exactly what that concept means. Your goal is to talk about the good in everything, what makes every piece of cinema “art”, and you’ve really taught me a lot about the art of criticism. There are so many viewpoints on every topic and sometimes you have to step outside of yourself and look at a piece from the perspective of the creator or the intended audience. As someone who always ends up playing devil’s advocate, I really love how you can find so much to appreciate in what a lot of people would brush off as schlock

IIRC the smarter characters had a "how did I not realize this" moment when the main character (can't remember her name) pointed it out.

    Show had a basic moral: cursed antiques give you what you want - but at a price.
