    I love this movie, but weirdly, never thought of it as a horror movie, but as a murder-thriller with a supernatural twist

      Same. I watched this at 11 when I was terrified of anything horror, still - I considered this movie scary, spooky, but not horror - more of a gothic supernatural murder mystery.

      the main issue was that the film was based on a short student film done by a single guy that took like 5 years. it was never really meant to go beyond that short, but apparently Burton loved it so much he wanted it to be made into a feature film.

    • @ThomasSchannel

      Bon Zon I remember it and watch it, people dont talk about it cause it wasnt very good. And personally I found it very depressing/disturbing /and I was a fan of tim at the time. The idea that humanity is dead and you can split your 'life force' up to give life to little sand sacks just doesnt sit well with me.

      @RyanHollinger  6 років тому +59

      I don't like it. It wears thin very quickly. That's the problem about adapting a short film into feature length... there's just not enough to sustain itself for the full time. It's biggest problem is just being painfully boring.

    • @esyphillis101
      @esyphillis101 6 років тому +3

      The problem with that film I think is it’s just too short. Not enough meat to the story or character development.

    I still firmly believe Beetlejuice is his best movie. The story was unique and interesting, Burton's style and aesthetic is on point (and I think the best example of his kind of style), it's one of my favorite cast in any movie, and the dark humor is spot on. Also it's one of the only PG movies ever to get away with an F-bomb and still be PG

    I think that Tim Burton settled into his Tim Burton-ness and never really grew as an artist. Many of his movies are: a morally dubious young man tries to amend his relationship with a responsible, kind woman who more or less takes care of him, in a fantastic setting, also everyone is a bit incompetent. That said, my favorite is Edward Scissorhands.

    • @cecilyerker

      I personally think that casting Johnny Depp over and over and over again didn't help that - regardless of one's stance on Johnny Depp in general, Tim Burton re-using him that many times ends up making it all look like a parody of itself.

    I watch this movie every year around Halloween time because it just so perfectly captures that delicate balance between campy fun and genuine horror that Halloween represents, at least to me.
    Also, 90's Burton felt fresh and interesting while 2000's Burton feels tired and re-hashed.

    Tangentially related, but once during a lecture in my American history class, my professor described the plot of Washington Irving’s original book by giving a Cliff’s Notes version of this movie. Gotta love community college professors.

  • @CapNCorn
    @CapNCorn 6 років тому +196

    Let me start by saying that I LOVE this film. Sure it made changes, but they really do make for a rich, fascinating tale. However, I must say, the original story isn't quite so devoid of depth or interesting themes as one might think. In the original story, you get the sense that the people of Sleepy Hollow are perfectly happy with their lifestyle, their customs and whatnot, and in comes Ichabod Crane to ruin the fun. He's not just a jerk, he's the true villain of the piece. Washington Irving's story was about a rural village that was perfectly content with their old ways of living, and Ichabod Crane was an alien invader from the future, meant to represent the encroaching threat of modernity, which Irving saw as very arrogant, godless, and ultimately weak. Ichabod was a pest and Brom Bones and the rest of the village just wanted to make Sleepy Hollow great again.
    Which is why what Tim Burton did is so damn interesting, because he totally flips the script. Like, it's a full thematic inversion. Burton saw Ichabod Crane as his favorite and most relatable character archetype, the outsider. The misfit. To Burton's film, modernity and progressive thinking will ultimately save us from the puritanical barbarism and superstitious cowardice in our past that has haunted us. Even the approach to the supernatural, which is never in any doubt, is not immune to this conflict between the old and the new. In the old days the supernatural, that which cannot be explained or understood, inspired fear and hatred and violence. By the end of the film, Ichabod accepts the existence of the supernatural, accepts that there are things he can't understand, and he's fine with it. Where men of the old days would have burned witches like his mother, or Katrina, he is accepting. He's not like your average Lovecraftian protagonist, driven to insanity and despair by such revelations. If anything he's made a better man, not a worse one.
    This is fascinating because here you have an original work and an adaptation that are 100% at odds with each other, in terms of how they see the coming of the modern age and how they see men like Ichabod versus men like Brom Bones. And yet, the adaptation isn't crippled by this in the least. How many adaptations can you see pull this off today? Imagine if there had been fans of Washington Irving's work with the same feeling of entitlement as too many of today's Star Wars fans. Tim Burton completely turned the story upside down! And it works!!!

    • @derek96720
      @derek96720 4 роки тому +16

      Star Wars fans aren't entitled. They're just upset that people waited over three decades to find out what happened to Han, Luke, and Leia, only to have all three of those characters killed off in one film after the other and their stories replaced with those of brand new barely-developed that characters nobody wanted and nobody asked for to begin with. Entitled? No. They just expected better, because the story that George Lucas created deserved better.

    I love Irving's original story. His descriptive writing really takes you into the period, the town, and the season. It mixes mystery, romance, humor, and supernatural spooks all into one great work. I also absolutely adore everything about this film. It's ok that it isn't a direct rendering of the story. It's like a reimagining and yet it still stays faithful to the overall tone of the original story imo, even if the details are different. If that makes sense? The humor, mystery, romance, and spookiness are all still there. It looks AMAZING. Probably one of my favorite ghost stories and one of my favorite movies of all time.

    Tim Burton's attempt at making a Hammer film, underlined by Christopher Lee being the one who sends Ichabod to Sleepy Hollow is absolutely gorgeous and dripping with atmosphere. It's worth seeing just to appreciate the imagery.
    Also, it's my favorite Depp performance. I love how he turns Ichabod into a heroic fraidy-cat, especially his habit of ducking behind anyone else for cover. And at one point he's even using his kid sidekick as a human shield. Oh and Christopher Walken as the Horseman is all the recommendation you need to watch it!

    I think that one of the real strengths of this film is that it hearkens back to an original tenet of horror: ghosts and ghouls and wyrd horrors are metaphors of the horror of humans. The whole plot is to do with land ownership and bureaucracy. The reason the witch sends the horseman after everyone is because of the landgrabs by rich landowners, one of the original sins of the United States.

    Really enjoyed this one, Ryan. I'll admit I wasn't a fan of this movie when it first came out, but becoming familiar with Hammer Horror films helped me appreciate this a whole lot more today.
    Keep up the awesome work, man!

    I still remember watching Sleepy Hollow for the first time flipping through channels late one night home alone when I was around 12 or 13. Easily enough, it landed on the scene where Ichabod cuts up the Tree with all the bloody heads and the meeting of the witch. I pretty much went NOPE and ran out of my living room disturbed AF.
    I finally properly rewatched the whole movie about 5 years later (I had a bit of a Tim Burton phase when I was in my last year of high school) and I loved it and appreciated a whole lot more than I ever did when I was younger.
    I even make it a Halloween tradition to watch this film after the Disney short, which I grew up with and loved for its charm (and its use of Bing Crosby). XD

    I adore this movie. Even as a kid, I was never scared of it. I'd seen the Disney cartoon version a bunch of times, so maybe that's why. That one creeped me a little only because Icabod just was saver heard form again. This one, with it's atmosphere, sense of mystery, the music (which I adore this soundtrack) and the hopeful good ending is like a storybook. I actually used to leave it playing in the background to go to sleep for that very reason when I was in HS. It's dreary enough to be calming in weird comforting way...

    Hi, I'm a new fan; great video on Sleepy Hollow! I grew up with the original short story and many old fashioned horror movies. This was a dream come true for me and your review is great. Personally, I figured that the Horseman's attachment to his horse made him sympathetic in some aspects but not too much so since he's a raging lunatic. That's just me though.

    So I finally watched this movie yesterday, but I actually grew up a few hours away from Sleepy Hollow. The story of the Headless Horseman was an extremely common Halloween time story in the area and I remember being taken on field trips to see stage versions for multiple years. I know this story inside and out, so it was very surreal seeing this movie which is such a dramatic departure (mainly for the characters of Ichabod and the Horseman). But once I got into the movie, I genuinely loved it, especially the desaturated and foggy look of the whole film. I also found movie Ichabod's cowardice and frailty almost refreshing in a strange way.

    I always have had such a weakness for this film! And I didn’t even remember most of the scenes you called out. For me, I could never forget that scene where they chop open his tree and it’s full of heads. It was such a spectacular answer to the question of “what does the headless horseman even do with the heads he takes?”

    Rember seeing this film years ago. I was too young to understand that the film wasn't trying to take itself too seriously and that ruined my film going experience, but many years later, thanks to you, I have more appreciation for this film, and now I want to go dig around my old DVD collection and find this film and rewatch, but can't. Thanks a lot, Ryan!

    I feel like this was an amazing combination of the somewhat off and yet often goofy humor style of Stephen King, the period dread and symbolism of Edgar Poe, the twists and supernatural element inclusion of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the mystery style of the earliest works of Agatha Christie . . . all being made suitable for Pee Wee's Halloween Extravaganza! When I think of Tim Burton, this is the first movie I think of even before The Nightmare Before Christmas; it's his style in practically every way and uses his best possible elements and the actors he paired best with before Helena Bonham Carter and Sasha Baron Cohen.

    I watched this film when I was quite young, and haven't seen it since, so it was interesting to see a more in depth analysis than, "that's a lot of decapitation". I always come to this channel and end up nodding the whole time, often Ryan is able to put notions into words that I couldn't express myself. That being said my favourite Tim Burton movie is either Edward Scissorhands or the Corpse Bride; both of which have been with me thoughout my childhood and hold a more nostalgic preference above anything else.

    I adored Sleepy Hollows when I was 4 or 5, the plot went slightly over my head but I just loved the costumes, sets and all around vibe of the film. I can still remember my cousin trying to put me to bed when it was on because she thought it was too gruesome and that I’d get nightmares from it. Along with Beetlejuice and The Corpse Bride it’s my favourite Tim Burton film

    I quite liked watching this movie, it felt very... fantasy, like you said in that time they have no trouble beleiving yet they still can't do anything.
    Its just such a hopeless scenario where you'd ask yourself "what now? where do we go from here? I didn't think I'd get this far..."
    Plus the visuals were great. I like that the supernatural things are very physically seen like the chopped heads and roots of the tree just caked in blood as stuff happens. Its a cool effect theme.

    Having grown up in Sleepy Hollow, the Washington Irving story's been drilled deep into my head since childhood. You can't leave your house the entire month of October, its so oversaturated. In that sense, I also found this movie refreshing, even though its "unfaithful" to the source material.

    I love listening to director commentaries, and when I listened to this one, the majority of the dialogue was, "johnny depp is such a good actor. He's sooooo good. I love johnny depp. johnny Depp. I love him so much. Such a good actor." Fifteen minutes in and I turned it off because I was sick to death already.

    I feel like it's almost illegal to talk about Tim Burton without talking about The Nightmare Before Christmas (even though he didn't direct it).
    I have mixed feelings about Sweeney Todd. Like, Tim Burton is probably the obvious choice for something like it: macabre, melodramatic, plenty of gallows humor... The transfer from musical to screenplay went very well... yet... I always feel like something special about the original musical didn't make it into the movie, even if I can't put my finger on what it is. And I always wonder if another director would've managed it. Maybe not. Adapting stage musicals to film is complicated business, and I think something will always be lost.

      Sweeney Todd to be honest is the only movie I've ever walked out of in a movie theatre. I thought it was absolutely dreadful, and so did the others I was there with. With Burton using his signature style and adding nothing original, as well as casting the same people he always works with, it was honestly more like a bad parody of himself and his work than anything else... "here's the same thing again, except we burst into song". No.

      Cats in Real Life For myself I just never liked the movie as much as the original musical, Johnny Depp for me never had the intensity of Sweeny that George Hearn did and Depp was too damn young to portray Sweeny who has remember been in prison for some years, having an older man ala Hearn just made more sense in that regard IMHO.

    I always enjoyed this film... it has a special place for me because it's the first R rated film that my mom let me watch growing up (I watched other before that she just didn't know....) looking back I feel like it would have been better in a Victorian setting instead of colonial setting. The visuals and the tone imply its 1899 instead of 1799. The rise in industrialization vs folklore and superstition seems to fit the Victorian era more... but that's just my opinion. Other than that it's a fun film to watch.
    If anyone's looking for any period drama/gothic horror I recommend checking out the BBC's Living and the Dead. Only one season but I enjoyed it.

    Well Ryan, generally speaking The Headless Horseman, and the Irish creature you talk about, The Dullahan, are different creatures but I can see where you're coming from, I imagine The Headless Horseman likely originates from the old Irish tales of the Dullahan, as it likely came with the Irish immigrants, and slowly morphed into the tale as we know it today
