Oh dear 40°C isn't cold, it's ridiculously HOTTTT, I think she meant Fahrenheit at the beginning when she was talking about how cold the area gets in the winter
They are actually super sweet too. The Urban Rescue Ranch on UA-cam has a few and they can be very sweet and affectionate animals when socialized to humans.
Ever since I first heard of them from the movie _Hoot,_ I've absolutely adored these little guys. I knew that they collected dung to attract dung beetles, but had no idea they raised so many owlets at a time, so thank you for teaching me that. They're a perfect example of niches being filled by the most unlikely of animals, and I love them to pieces.
I have never seen more than 5 owlets in a burrow. Didn't know they could have as many as 12! live in Florida and we have one of the largest populations of them.
When I was a kid in the 80s we walked through a field and there was a hole in the ground. We were looking in it and started seeing something looking back at us. It was a family of burrowing owls. One of my oldest memories.
I live in southeastern Brazil. There used to be a family of burrowing owls living just outside my house. I think they lived in a hollowed out termite nest. That was some eight years ago. As our neighborhoog urbanized, they disappeared. But I used to be amazed at them when I was a kid.
Around 3:36 and 4:50 the birds living inside that concrete slab are not burrowing owls. These are little owls living in Crimea, filmed by the channel My-Mriya Crimea Wildlife. Be sure to check them out, they have a lot of interesting wildlife videos.
Absolutely the most superb owls, indeed! I first learned about these little guys when my son got into the "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" books. At first I thought they were made up - owls living UNDER the ground?!? - but everything I've learned about them since has just been awesome!
Used to see these all the time out on my Aunt's farm as a kid. So adorable to see the lil babies skittering around like fluffs on stilts. Glad to see my home Province getting some positive videos about it again.
I saw a burrowing owl once outside my old job, a shipyard. They’re tiny and pretty smart, the one I saw actually hid in the shadows of a power line pole to avoid people leaving work
Thank you for doing a segment on my favorite owl. I'm just tickled to see them - and the prairie dogs. I've argued with property owners for the dogs' protection on behalf of themselves and the owls (and others) for years. My dad was once a military range warden at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma decades ago when I was young, before the environmental movement really took off; and he was adamant that every little living thing kept something else alive with us at the top of the pile. "Take any of those little things away, and you'll find human beings falling off their pedestals, too." How right he was. NB. I am so enamored by the wonderful animal art! I'm gonna go broke next month sooner than usual.
Burrowing owls can be found in Arizona. Estrella Mountain Community College (part of the Maricopa Community College network) had to delay construction on one of their buildings because a burrowing owl nest was found in the construction site. If I remember correctly, this was like a decade ago, and they were just waiting for the birds to "move along" before construction resumed.
I live in Arizona and there is a group that relocates burrowing owls to other places when construction is taking over their location. Some burrowing owls do migrate to Mexico or Texas....but not all of them, so relocation is needed.
@@BillFromAZ I remember in this story, the college specifically decided to wait for the owls to move. I think it may be due to babies and/or eggs in the nest. Then again, this was around a decade ago. There's news stories on it somewhere, if you can get Google to spit it out for you.
There's a novel called Hoot which is about a teenager and his friends who must protect a flock of burrowing owls from bulldozers that are sent from a Breakfast restaurant chain to build their new location. 🦉
Petition to rename these Burrow Owls since they live in burrows but don't burrow. Also, fun fact, when you say -40 degrees you don't need to say Celsius or Fahrenheit since -40 degrees Celsius = -40 degrees Fahrenheit.
They're So odd looking and kinda adorable at the same time. i love them, there are these little birds that live in my area and they run around and look for anything little moving around by stomping back and forth in the leaf litter with it's tiny feet and they look like little ground owls grabbing stuff. i leave out fresh water for the wild animals to drink and sometimes i put out steel cut oats, walnuts, unsalted almonds and other things that usually get picked up by various birds mostly the turkeys that sleep in the trees across the street, a few of them will actually eat stuff out of my hand or pluck it from my fingers but Absolutely will Not let anyone touch them. 😄👍 😄👍
I remember meeting these guys in florida where they are protected. A hawk was sitting on a pipe sticking out of the ground waiting for a burrowing owl to come out of its burrow. It made me sad, but the hawk likely got its meal.
I loved seeing this guys near the limits of my city, there was a place were you can always see them everyday, it was a nice field of flower where they hunt without problem, sadly they are building a mall there now and they ae gone now.
I was up close and nearly personal with one of them in August 2019 when I visited the Interpretive Centre of the Peace Gardens on the Manitoba/North Dakota border. So tiny. And truly interesting.
I'm pretty sure all owl species have long legs (look at owl skeletons). But these are usually hidden beneath their feathers. My guess is these extra feathers disappeared for burrowing owls because they didn't need the insulation as much, and the feathers were somehow hindering when living in burrows.
I met Prince Phillip when he visited Saskatchewan to support the protection of the burrowing owl. He as at a farm near Kronau SK. I believe he was representing the WWF.
Owls mainly use facial recognition to avoid predators. The pigeon's facial features activate the cat's insulin receptors, making the cat want to eat the pigeon. But owls' facial features can make cats insulin resistant, preventing them from attacking owls. 🦜🦉
@@JackieOwl94 they’re actually already native there in the upper south like Kentucky Tennessee and parts of northern Alabama and Louisiana they’re starting to move into they’re a neat little bird
If it's more active during dawn and dusk, that makes it a Crepuscular animal... Not Diurnal. Really annoying seeing animal channels not being able to distinguish between the two.
LOL Superb Owl! That reference is NOT lost on me! Also, fun bit of trivia: if you say "negative 40 degrees," there is no need to designate Celsius or Fahrenheit, as both are identical temperatures. Can we have an episode on wild budgies, please? ♥
Gophers are nature's soil aerators. Some people will park their vehicle tires over the holes and spin just to destroy it. I gave someone heck for doing that at a Indian mound of all places.
Just in time for the Super Bowl we have an episode on the most superb owls! Enjoy!
A level 9000 liaison pun! Science said it's impossible! 😳
Superb!
Please make a video about seriemas.

based on their nest finding characteristics, they should be called as Borrowing Owls
underrated lmao
Bah dum tsss
Or Burrow-borrowing owls
Squatter owls
An angry looking prairie owl staring out its burrow is the cutest thing I've seen
They are actually super sweet too. The Urban Rescue Ranch on UA-cam has a few and they can be very sweet and affectionate animals when socialized to humans.
@@DaimyoD0 I've never really interacted with them but ive seen around while hiking. They're inquisitive little hooligans
I cannot believe how perfect and lucky this shot was: 0:11. It's like the owl knew what was happening and wanted its debut to be perfect.

Yo as a fellow brazilian that's cool as hell to hear, sorry to hear they are now rare where you live. What city are you from anyway lad?
@@Voc_spooksauce I'd rather not specify that in social media.
Brazil has the highest rate of deforestation on Earth.

I saw a burrowing owl popping out of it's burrow one time. That stare says "I'm not having it! Shoo!"
They're like the owl version of meerkats
They’re merely owls
"Hole Full of Feces" is my favorite GWAR song.

Wow these owls are so photogenic. Gosh they are so cute.
Just recently discovered these absolutely adorable muppets on stilts, like two weeks ago. And now you make this video... Either way, they are *great*

YES! Video evidence, my wife still denies that these owls exist. Thank you!

I first read: Borrowing Owls... which with "profit off the end of the world" made some kinde of sense, allthough a harsh one.
I adore owls!
Best Superb Owl of my weekend for sure!
I noticed at the zoo that many birds were moved off exhibit because of the flu! Very interesting
A number of zoo in America have lost birds to the Avian Flu this and last year's.
Never encountered a rattlesnake but that screech surely sent tingles up and down my spine. It's still running as I type this out...
"These SUPERB OWLS..." I see what you did there.
Wow i forgot how pretty Aranya was, but anyway so are these owls! Lovely video and thank you for all the work put into these :>
Cheers from Brazil !
My favorite part of this video is around 2:45 when the owls are turning to look at the camera and scowling🤣
They are very derpy looking in person. Had a burrowing owl land on my back porch. Was literally half legs!

We have some burrowing owls near our house that like to watch cars drive by thay are so cute
2:59 = me when the neighbors are out doing something weird.
