I was at the Motor City Comic Con (Detroit) years ago when Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar were attending. The three of them were sitting at a table telling stories and answering questions. Adam West said they did dozens of takes on this one scene and they were running out of time. They were doing one last take that, no matter what happened, would be in the show. So Adam ad-libbed the “thrust of manhood” line.
I love how Adam West always seems a little lost when deciding how to enter the Batmobile, like he goes one way but then starts running in the opposite direction lol.
They were probably tired of the rumours about Batman and Robin. It was necessary to reassure the audience that Robin was oriented towards heterosexuality...
That's the exact reason she was introduced in the comics. The Hayes* (*not sure of spelling)Code really messed with a lot of things. On top of Frederick Worthum*, a terrible psychologist that messed up comics for decades.
No, he wasn't. Dick Grayson/Robin is portrayed as a solid crime fighter who is incredibly innocent and naive about everything else. Like the episode where he pretends he's a smoker and then basically hacks up a lung after sticking a cigarette in his mouth. The odds Dick/Robin had ever really noticed girls prior to this is slim.
Considering all the raunchy stories about all the debauchery those two got up to behind the scenes with any woman who wandered onto set, I would be entirely unsurprised if this double-entendre was actually intentional. 🤣
It was not only intentional, Adam West purposely screwed up all the previous takes just so he could add the word "thrust" to the final take and force the editors to use it.
Watching Adam West run as Batman never fails to crack me up. Of course, as a kid I never noticed it, but as an adult he has such a weird, zig-zaggy, arms a'flailin' way of running.
I'd advise anyone to read Burt Ward's book on the Batman years and the shennanigans he and Adam West got up to. They were having a phat time making the series, with women throwing themselves at them daily (and them reaping the benefits)
I recall reading an interview with Burt Ward in, I think, Penthouse Magazine, circa 1979. (I was about 13 and had found a stash of some other kid’s magazines in a field. 😂) Ward said that during (and immediately after) the Batman series, girls were all over him, and that he spread his “bat seed” all over. Bat seed? I remember thinking that was odd, even as a kid, because Robin wasn’t a bat. But I got his point. 😏
Back in the late 80s or early 90s, he was a guest on Kevin & Bean’s morning show in K-ROQ in Los Angeles where he pretty much talked about the same thing - he was hilarious during the entire interview. He talked about Adam saying goofy stuff like, “Let’s get Batgirl in between the two of us, we’ll make us a “Bat Sandwich!” 😂
By contract, everything Robin produced and all derivatives were property of Bat-Corp. The tables were turned when the women of Robin's dalliances filed a class action against Bat-Corp for Bat-Child support.
I've watched it since and see stuff like that. At the time I watched this totally on the level and am somewhat appalled by my lack of understanding at the time. However there was one time when I had the appropriate response even if I didn't understand the whole joke. One time Batman and Robin were in the Batcave and they ran to the Batpoles, whereupon some rockets lit up underneath the landing pads and rocketed them UP, back into the study in Wayne Manor. I had never seen that before and never considered that would be possible, and me and my best friend, who were faithful viewers. started screaming and laughing hysterically and jumping around the room so much that his mother had to come see what all the excitement was about. So on that one I did laugh at the joke, even though I still didn't realize they were playing it as comedy.
Good to see that Batman got his staff in order, albeit with some stiff words. No doubt the point will be hammered home repeatedly, eventually erupting in an explosive moment of euphoric understanding.
This is when Batman realized Robin was as getting too old, and his happy time in the Batcave, walking around in tights with that teenaged boy was nearly over.
Robin: "I just noticed how pretty she is when she's asleep?" Batman: "I was wondering when you would notice that." Wait, when has Batman seen her asleep. That's creepy. Stalker-Creepy. Dare I say: Bat-Stalker Creepy.
She was in the Batcave with them for quite awhile. This is when they are leaving and they told her they would put her to sleep so that she wouldn't see where the Batcave was located (they were all three transported to the Batcave, so she didn't see anything on the way in)
In addition to noticing how she looks when she's asleep, I think 'Robin' would have also 'noticed her' considering he's sitting right beside her in the seat 'squeezed in' and no doubt in body contact...But it was nice to see 'Robin' open the door for her.
That line would have gone flying like a Batarang right over my head when I used to watch the series, being too young to understand it, as well as too young to appreciate Yvonne Craig.
They gave her a whiff of “Bat-Sleep” potion so she wouldn’t know where the Batcave was located. They did this a lot in the 60s show when people visited the cave.
