- You probably know I get excited about testing a new foundation, but the brand new foundation release from The Ordinary has got me all kinds of excited. This is largely due to how good I know the skincare they already produce is, with the added bonus of just how affordable these foundation's are.
First up and hot out of my postman's hand I am testing The Ordinary Colours Serum Foundation. This retails for an unbelievable £5.70, yes you read that right!
So, can The Ordinary deliver on this highly coveted foundation that had a waitlist of over 25,000 straight after ordering was released. Have they managed to tear up the makeup rule book shortly after already tearing up the skincare rule book? is it time for other makeup brands to step up their game and do things The Ordinary way?.....

WavyKate what is your shade in MAC Foundations?
it's been a while, but the last time I used one it was NC15/20 xxx
WavyKate omg I thought you have cool undertone. do you think the shade 1.0P is suitable for someone with NW13 complexion?
Yes I believe I do have cool undertones. Hmmm, not sure! sorry. They have said 3 or more should match and I think going with 1.0 for a MAC 13 should be ok, it's just the undertone i'm not sure about. Wayne Goss has done a MAC comparison chart in the description of his video. The link to that video is in my description box 😁
+WavyKate I have cool undertone, too. And I honestly think you have a neutral-leaning-to-cool undertone. It'd be interesting tos ee you try cool-undertone foundations and compare it with your warmer foundations :-)
I have seen Wayne's video but could not see any review of 1.0P, that's why I'm still confused on the shades. I just don't want to get a too-pale shade--although this never happened before when you have NW13 skin lol.

That foundation looks amazing for someone who doesn't use foundation, it looks very light weight and natural, perfect for summer time perhaps
Yes, I think it it would make a lovely summer time foundation. It's so natural looking but still gives excellent coverage, its exactly how all face makeup should be! thank you for the lovely comment x

Agree. You have excellent skin. Good texture. There is no red and blue under the eyes. You are that happy woman who can use a concealer and a little powder and be a beauty

Haha, I was getting quite excited at the end wasn't I? it's just when you've tried SO many foundations ranging from £7.99 all the way through to £40+ it's easy to get blown away with one as good as this when it's £5.70!!!! The Ordinary have totally changed everything, we should all be asking ourselves now why everything else is so expensive. I really hope they look at doing other makeup now too. I would love to see them release a concealer. Hopefully they will continue adding to their range of products. I just placed an order for another bottle of the Buffet and ordered their fluid primer and the serum foundation as well. I'm super excited to try it out. I'll get the coverage foundation too with the next order I place.
Yes, a concealer would be fantastic!!! I don't know how they made the foundation so good but they clearly know what they are doing! I really want to try buffet. Hope you love the foundation xxx
WavyKate I just wanted to say that I found you through this video and subbed. You're great! I'm new to in-depth skincare. I just used a cleanser and moisturizer and that was it, but then I discovered The Ordinary through Wayne Goss. I had no idea what to get, so went with the suggested anti aging regimen. It really has helped my skin so much! I can't wait to get the foundation and primer. Also, I saw they were going to be releasing highlighting pigments to mix in with foundations. That should be awesome!
I have been in the ordinary bandwagon for quite a long time now and found out about the colours thru an email or newsletter sent out by Victoria health. in hindsight I am so thankful for this because I placed my order on April 8 and my serums have finally been shipped!!! I purchased 4 foundations 2 serum and 2 coverage and still only spent around 36 us dollars.... and about 12 of that is shipping. after watching your review I absolutely cannot wait to get mine... I'm jealous 👺you have received yours already because you look stunning!

Hi Kate! Wow! I hope the feedback you have had has brought a smile to your face for this Bank holiday weekend. Your skin looks beautiful & the shade is "bob on". I think this would be fab for brides/ bridesmaids as it looks so natural but great on photos. I will certainly consider this when I need a foundation & the price is great too with SPF. Oh fantastic! I don't tend to go for serum foundations as they tend not to offer what I want from a foundation, so I'm not sure how this will compare, but i'll have my fingers crossed that it does live up to your higher end ones. Think of all the money you'll save!! xx
I'm so excited to try this foundation! You look pretty fair and this isn't even the lightest shade, I'm very pale and all the affordable fountations are wayyy too dark for me, so I hope the lightest shade can match my skintone
I think it will run pretty fair, I have 1.1P and 1.2P in the coverage version on the way to me (hopefully!!) and I think 1.1 is going to be too fair. Generally speaking, affordable foundation shade ranges aren't that great, hopefully The Ordinary will change that :-) I hope you like it and it works out for you xxx

Thank you so much for your review! I'm 52 and have been searching for a foundation that works with my aging skin! I did see Wayne's review, and ordered some a couple of weeks ago. I live in the US, but I don't know why they can't have SPF in it, because we have SPF and many of our cosmetics here.

You're welcome! I think this foundation will do wonders on ageing skin. I have quite a few lines on my forehead and lots around my eyes and it is very forgiving in those areas. It doesn't accentuate a thing. I've had a few comments explaining the SPF side of things and I believe it's due to different regulations regarding products containing SPF in the different countries. I guess we have slightly differing rules about what is ok and what has been tested. I hope you love it! xxx

Thanks for the review! As a lightweight coverage/ skin like finish foundation lover I'm super excited to give this a try, esp as they seem to have shades that are light enough yet neutral toned for my ghostly fair skin! I ordered direct from deceim over a week ago now so hopefully mine will be on its way soon; it's my first order from them so I'm looking forward to not only the foundation but the handful of the other products I have coming...mostly from the Ordinary + 1 from their "Inhibitif" line).

PS The SPF issue is solely a regulatory/ labeling technicality. The actual product is identical so the SPF is there regardless; they simply haven't completed the US testing/ approval process yet that allows it to be officially labeled as an SPF. I appreciate that they decided to sell it as such rather than delaying sale in the US until the SPF approval was completed, which can take a ridiculously long time...esp b/c in the end no one should really be relying on foundation for their only SPF anyhoo. The added protection is never a bad thing though, & is in the product regardless of which country one is in...it just won't say so in the label yet in the US!

I'm in the US and was able to order the Serum foundation (I ordered 1.2N & 2.0N) on April 24th, so I am now waiting excitedly for my order to be processed and delivered.
This is an amazing review! I especially appreciated the explanation of the color ranges and am thrilled to hear that the colors are somewhat forgiving (3 shade variable). I'm also using other The Ordinary products - primer, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, rose hip seed oil and plant derived squaline - I LOVE these products and keep thinking that someday soon the company is going to realize that they've made a mistake in their pricing. :o/

Hi Kate, there are not a lot of review on this product. I am an avid Deciem product user such as the Ordinary rosehip oil, buffet and Hylamide product. We, in Canada, have been waiting a long time for these foundations. I have ordered the Coverage foundation and the serum version from the Deciem site in Canada. Can't wait to try them. Yes it's all so very exciting, I've just looked at my order and both foundations say pending, I ordered them end of march so, hopefully I won't have to wait too long. I have lots of texture issues and a few broken capillaries so like a good coverage but, I hate looking like I have a load of make on haha....I'm a difficult customer. I think your detail is spot on, really like knowing the background of the foundation, the colours etc. Xx

I remember when I got the email from victoria health saying we could pre-order colours, I was walking my dog and I pretty much ran home as I was so worried I wouldn't get it!! LOL. I'm still amazed I got at least one, I really hope i'm ok for the coverage version too as that was the one I was more excited about. I really wasn't expecting that much from the serum version. It really is the best foundation I have put on my face in terms of feel and that it doesn't accentuate anything. It just looks so blooming natural! it's so fast to apply too. ahhhhhh could gush about it all day I think!! thanks for the feedback xxx

Just found your channel. Great review of The Ordinary foundation! I've been on the waiting list and can't wait to receive the high coverage foundation as I am 65, have open pores and need some help! Wow 😳.... it's a very buidable foundation. The coverage and color is perfect. I appreciate your attention to detail in this video and your honest review. I would probably use a sponge to apply this. I'll have to try this foundation. I love that there is a wide array of colors to choose from. Stay fabulous. Hugs 🤗

I am so excited to get mine. I live in the states so I am sure it will take some time. I love love love their skin care line, so I can't begin to imagine a cosmetic line.
It's no wonder the internet went into meltdown when it was announced! they have such a cult following now, it's all very exciting! I can't wait for the metallic/luminising drops to come out separately, and anything else they do too, they obviously know what they are doing and this greatly excites me!! xxx
I'm guessing as a pharmacist the reason the US version of this doesn't have spf is because they're using meroxyl/ecamsule or some other sunscreen not approved in the US.

Bibi Maizoon I had to order my sunscreen from France to get those ingredients, imho they work better than the is equivalent. I'm too lazy to copy and paste the name, but it's all patented by the same company. it's la Roche posay but that's not the conglomerate I don't think. doesn't matter.
Actually they use titanium dioxide and the formations are the same for Europe and North America but for some reason they do not label the North American versions as having SPF 15 even though they do. You can check the brands website or instagram for a full explanation.
Actually, they explained on their website that the formulas are identical, but they cannot claim SPF in the US without further testing/approval.

There's not a different version going to Canada US or Australia lol, it's a different packaging, there's different regulations to claim SPF 15 in those countries

I loved this review, thank you. First time I've seen anything you've produced, and I will certainly be subscribing. I particularly liked how you kept your makeup looking really natural, but polished. I'm so used to seeing UA-camrs chucking on so much makeup they no longer look like humans. A breath of fresh air :)

Yup, natural makeup is my day to day thing, i'd love to be a bit more adventurous but being a Mum I don't get a lot of opportunity to experiment. All I strive for most days is a nice natural but polished look, so I am delighted by your comment! The last part of your comment made me laugh! I know just what you mean. I got into watching UA-cam beauty videos after I had my son and I was desperately trying to find someone that did natural makeup that was just a 'normal' person, but there really weren't that many people out there....so I thought, ok I'll give it a go then!! The formulation isn't different in the US, it's that anything with a labeled SPF rating has to go through FDA testing and certification. Same foundation, just not allowed to state it has an SPF 15 without that. Probably a similar situation in Australia as the SPF rating and regulation is pretty strict there.

I can certainly try, I have to use natural lighting so the longer the day goes on the trickier it gets for me to get good quality lighting for video. I do foundation update videos, where after 5/6 foundation first impressions I go through each one again with more info about my thoughts after testing with different moisturisers, primers and powders. I love foundation mixing (or cocktailing!) as if one foundation does one thing well and another does another thing well, I like to experiment and hope I create something magical! sometimes they don't mix well together, but being from the same brand then it should be fine. I cannot wait for the full coverage one to get to me!!!! xx

Awesome review! Very helpful. I'm in the US and I want both. Your info on having some wiggle room within there shades was awesome! I have tricky shade. I'm not super pale, not medium, I'm in this weird in between but at least I can go neutral, yellow, or pink tone! New Sub!!

LOVE! USA probably can't get the formulation with SPF in it because our regulatory branch, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) hasn't gotten around to approving one of the sunscreen ingredients......we are so behind the times because many of us are still sun worshippers.... I look forward to trying this foundation serum! I love The Ordinary products. 💟💟💟

They are still in pre-order and VH are shipping them out as soon as they get them in. Oh i'm so sorry to hear that, I've seen a few comments on social media that are similar to yours. I was only just thinking this morning that maybe the hype had been so much that people would have high expectations and then be disappointed. I really hope my review was realistic as it certainly isn't perfect, in my coverage review I go into a bit more of this detail as by that point I had tested out the serum foundation a bit more than just a first impression. I will be doing an update video on both having tested them out further, but I think the ease of application and coverage is beautiful and I surprised myself in preferring the serum one (I think - lol, still testing) it's just the mega oiliness that is tricky. Thank you so much, i'm glad you liked it. I hope that with further experimentation you'll like it, they mix together nicely too so you've got a few different options to play with xxx

Obviously I haven't read every comment, so I apologize if it's already been covered. In Wayne Goss's video he included in the description box a color chart showing how the Ordinary colors compare to MAC colors for easier shade reference and selection.

The thing with the spf is probably because some sunscreen filters are just not allowed in the USA.
Yes I didn't realise this. Lots of different regulations in different countries, it's a whole side of selling something internationally that I didn't know about or had even thought about. Quite interesting really :-) xx
