It's important that we have our "whoa and go" VERY refined, especially when we start moving at higher speeds. You might look up the "How to Use Body Language to "Whoa and Go" on the web site.

It's more like "turn while backing." You can back a few steps, then it helps to ask for the horse to roll back over their hocks by first looking the direction you want to go, turning your body, applying a little outside leg pressure and then following through with the reins. Doing this along a fence helps encourage the horse to keep their weight shifted over their hind end, but don't get so close that the horse's body doesn't have room to come though.

If your horse rolls back well on one side and not the other, I'd say you might look into the possibility of a physical problem creating some hesitation there. Otherwise, break the roll back down into a back up, then pivot, only when your back up is really good, would you ask for a turn when that hind pivot leg is under their body. When the ingredients are good, put it all together!

My mustang Joe loves to run, and was a cowhorse, I was wondering how I could break him into a barrel horse?
It'd mostly be for the fun of it and experience also.
As I'm getting a mare soon and she's going to be trained as such.

Hi I have been barrel racing for about 10 months now and my horse has started to "stop" at barrels and turn on the forehand. Do I just need to practice wide and get smaller? I would love to get your opinion! Thanks!

Hi, I've been barrel racing for about 12 years, I got an all around horse 4 years ago. When I lope to the right, she uses the left lead. My dad says it's because she is a rope horse. How can I fix this?

Hi Brooklyn, most important when it comes to helping our horse pick up the correct lead, is making sure we can yield there hips. This will help -> www.barrelracingtips.com/start-strong-to-finish-fast-catch-the-correct-lead-for-a-stress-free-alley-set-up-every-time

Hey, my horse is REALLY fast and when he's coming on the way back from the last barrel he goes super fast but then he trips how can I make sure he goes fast and dose not Trip?

The first thing to do would be to rule out a physical problem and make sure your horse's feet are balanced and not too long. Also search for my posts on "whoa and go" and "lazy horse" at BarrelRacingTips.com. Some horses that trip aren't picking up their feet as they should.

kaylee ramsey Hi Kaylee, thanks for your question. Here's are a couple articles/videos that I think will be helpful for you - www.barrelracingtips.com/the-barrel-pattern-of-least-resistance, and www.barrelracingtips.com/start-and-finish-your-turns-tight-right.

Hi! I'd say before you start barrel racing, train you and your horse with simple things first. If you already ride and are new to racing, once again start out with simple things. Learn the pattern first, then work on trotting it. After that try leaning in on your turns. Body language is needed and essential to not just barrel racing but everything you do. Even when you're ground training. Body language is key. Hope this helped!
