Michael Jordan's , "The Shot" 5-7-1989

  • As a Chicago kid, it was a privilege to be working in Chicago sports media, during the truly Golden Era of the 80's and 90's....Sox and Cubs playoffs for the first time in forever, the amazing '85 Bears, and of course MJ and the Bulls...awesome ! So today, as Michael Jordan turns 50, and AARP drafts him into their ranks, I'd like to share what I consider the greatest shot of MJ's career. Many would say it was the jumper he hit in 1998 vs.Utah, to win ring # 6, his last game as a Bull. But I say it was, "The Shot", he took in 1989 vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers. Even though the Bulls didn't win their first championship until 2 years later, "The Shot" put the world on notice, the Bulls would soon be something special.
It was a best of 5 series, and the Bulls were up 2-1 going into game 4 in Chicago. Jordan virtually guaranteed a win prior to that game, but he missed a key free throw late, and the Cavs escaped forcing a game 5 back in Cleveland....where they held a 38-5 home record.
The game was on a Sunday afternoon, and I flew in that morning and drove straight to the Richfield Coliseum. As was his custom, Jordan would seldom go out for the pre-game team warm-up, so I went to the Bulls locker room, to find him sitting by himself. He asked me to see the Sunday papers I had with me, and asked what the buzz was back home. I told him most media folks gave the Bulls credit for a well played series, but it would be tough to win game 5 on the road, against a good Cavs team. He said, "we're not going to lose, come see me after the game". Ok M, see you then I said. Keep that conversation in mind as hear me lose it, after "The Shot" goes in.
What you're about to see is the final few baskets of a back and forth finish, and a classic shootout between Jordan and a very gutsy Craig Ehlo. This amazing footage was shot by the best sports cameraman I know, Chuck Davidson. Chuck, reporter Rich King, and I sat on the floor, as history played out before us.
Milestone birthdays happen to all of us, if we're lucky. But when they happen to great athletes, it marks time differently. We want to remember the fresh faced kid from North Carolina, not the crusty 50 year old team owner. Michael Jordan was/is far from perfect, none of us are...but for those who paid to watch him play, MJ never took a night off, and brought his best everytime he hit the floor. He remains the best ever, and I consider myself lucky to have witnessed moments like this....Happy Birthday M

At 1:55, we see Mark Price is literally GRABBING the guy he's defending (3-point sharp shooter Craig Hodges). This is back in the day in the NBA when defenders would manhandle players. That's what makes Jordan so incredible - the fact that he did all this stuff during the roughest period of the Association when you could get away with anything on defense.

This shot going in was so significant.... it happened in 1989.... if he doesn't make it then don't go to the next round obviously and definitely not to the Eastern Conference Finals to play the Bad Boy Pistons and who knows how many years the Bulls are away from having success in the upcoming years. Especially even WITH THIS shot going in to win, it took a couple years to get to the Finals.... so iconic this shot and this game.
I'm sure it gave the Bulls confidence and reason to keep the current team together and not make off-season changes that would hinder the start of something so great. Like 6 rings in the 90's. Such a significant shot and great this video was here for all to watch as it marked THEE BEGINNING OF THE BULLS DYNASTY.

thank you so much for posting this video... this is a pure no commentation point of view, that we the fans can grasp and take what we want from it, love it, love jordan, the dude had nothing left in his tank, but some how he made the shot look easy... the dude look like he was about to fall over and die... the man is amazing...

Amazing to see this alternate angle of the play. Such raw footage. Thank you, uploader. Great story in your caption. I, too, grew up in Chicagoland during this heyday. Will never forget Red Kerr's shouts of joy on the local broadcast. (But you got some pretty memorable shouts in yourself here! Can't imagine Rich King being that guy, heh.) Love the interview at the end with Chet Coppock and Jim Rose all over MJ. It's absolutely insane how Jordan goes straight into interview mode only seconds after shot an exhilarating moment. Looks like the CBS Sports guys had first dibs on the interview and almost knocked you down!

3:50 - This is the biggest difference between Lebron and Michael Jordan. Lebron "It's my team's fault". Jordan after carrying the team "I was disappointed in myself". He always gave it his best, and if it wasn't good enough, he made his best… better. No one was more determined. By the way, the excitement of the media in the 90s 2:05 It sounds like they're soldiers in the middle of an air assault haha

bledredwine Jordan demanded a shit load out of his teammates too , though. He just would never say that in front of a camera, and put the blame on himself instead. Classy dude, crazy video

Eddie Crims That's not true. After the finals when the Spurs blew him out by an NBA record in point differential, he said there was nothing else that he could do and they were a better team.
