I have primarily 3c hair (think Luhhsetty) and I haven't had a relaxer since middle school (I'm 20) so when my boyfriend, who has 4c hair, told me he wanted to grow out his natural hair, I told him I could totally help with the process of styling and everything! Let me tell you, girl: PLAYED MYSELF. None of my products had ANY effect, his hair sucked everything up immediately! I knew how hair was different, but I completely underestimated just how different. Luckily his sister came home and saved the day 😂

I’m 4a. My coils range from sharpie size to pen tip size. Wash and go’s actually prevent me from getting tangled because it is frozen in place (however the ends always loop and give me single strand knots, so it’s a 50/50 payoff). My hair also stays more moisturized.

Thanks for that dose of Nappyfoolery at the end! I'm still trying to perfect a wash and go on my mostly 4c hair. It is a lot of work and trying to find the right combo of leave-in and gel/styling product is a struggle! I agree that it good in that you're moisturizing and hydrating your hair more often. The only reason I'm attempting this is because I started working out 4-5 times a week and I need to refresh my hair between shampoos. But I'm starting to think that a chunky braid out after a midweek co-wash will work better for me.

I like how it looked on your hair shrunken. I like the wash n go the most. I find that twisting my hair a lot breaks it. For me the wash n go is easier. I can do it in an hour. And yes I'm 4c. However I don't use products that leave a bunch of white stuff. But my hair is not as long as yours so it probably takes you way longer to dry.

Thank You for stating that this takes a LONG time! I totally agree.... my hair also is low porosity, so waiting for my hair to dry is Not the business!!! I've been on this hydrate and define thing this year and so many talk about how this takes less time than twistouts, and I'm like Huh? Not unless you have a twa! I can't do the damp hair going out thing, and I can go to bed with wet / damp twists, rock a headwrap if they're still not dry etc, but with these, you just gotta wait it out, diffuse, etc. I am still learning technique so thank you for this demo (and the demo of these products).

Pros: great curl definition on my 4C, lasts at least a week
Cons: more work detangling and single strand knots 😖
And I do not use gel on my wash 'n go. It's the hair's natural curl pattern, the hair wants to curl that way so the pattern isn't going anywhere..absolutely no need for gel (speaking on my own personal hair)

I prefer the banding method because twists forced tangles on top of the coils for me. When I band my hair I do like doing it on very shrunken hair cause it does stretch the curls.

With type 4 hair using the banding method after your wash n go dries or even while its wet will help to stretch the hair and keep it detangled. Flax seed gel works great on my hair and gives it a nice hold with volume and its inexpensive.

I greatly enjoy you and your videos. I appreciate how over the years you done updated videos on wash & go on 4c hair. You looked very pretty but it is too much work for a style that will only last for a day or so and the risk of tangles and matting is real. I tend to agree with your earlier videos when you stated that wash & go's are not for 4c hair and that is okay.

  • @clemsongirl226

    Pros: Fast, easy, and lasts
Cons: none wash n goes are my go to style. I've mastered them and yes I'm 4C.
My favorite products to use are the Taliah Waajid curly curl cream or the Clear Eco styler gel (Xtreme Wetline gel works good too). I use whatever leave in I have on hand. To maintain it I sleep with my hair in 5 ponytails and fluff it in morning. On wash day I spritz my hair with a little water and coat my hair in oil then detangle with my fingers and a comb or brush.

I don't know my actual hair type. Just know it's type 4. I hate the time it takes to do a wash and go. I gotta section it out, apply product and then it doesn't last. I tried it once on the shower: apply gel while hair was soaking wet which is quicker, but the rate my hair shrinks and knots up is not worth it. Wash and No is what I end up with

I adore this shampoo. I have been dealing with serious post partum hair loss for about 7 months and this is the only thing that has helped. Argan rain Shampoo spells AMAZING . I went from having handfuls of hair fall to each shower to only a few strands here and there.

I am not a wash and go believer. Pros if done correctly you can see your curls and really rock your natural hair and I love that.
Cons: knots, tangles, breakage and there are no such thing as wash and Go when you have type 4 hair.
More like wash 10 steps and 20 hours later and go😂
I am thinking about it especially during holidays when I can't pack my whole hair products arsenal with me. This style is potentially perfect just need to master a technique that works for me . And if ever do one I thought I would twist my hair too and do the banding method.

NappyFu, serious question. When I first went natural I was 4c hair texture with low porosity, so I started watching you. You gave me so much knowledge and tips YOU changed my hair type, is that possible? For the past six months I've noticed a looser texture 4a/b with high porosity. I believe you've touched on this topic before but I can't remember if any one does please link the video. Also, you personality is everything! I would watch even if I had 3a curls

That sounds like you had that curl pattern all along...also unless you are 95% African from certain tribes, which you are probably not, I can almost guarantee you that you never had 4c hair to begin with.

I have mostly 4b hair with a little bit of 4a and 4c in certain sections. I almost always do a wash and go. My twist outs don’t seem to last that long and I end up throwing it up into a puff earlier in the week. I find it easier to do wash and gos because it gives me definition and is super long lasting. I just do all my washing, detangling, and styling in the shower. Takes forever but it gives me good results. I will say it takes me hair forever to dry though. I also use the banding method to keep my hair from shrinking up and tangling. If I don’t, I’ll go from having a full fro to TWA in a matter of days lol

Choice Band101 After shampooing, deep conditioning, and detangling, I moisturize my hair. I do the LCO method. L= water from my still damp/wet hair. C= Cantu repairing cream/SM curl enhancing smoothie. O= Coconut oil, Jamaican Black Castor oil, & olive oil mixture. Next, I spray my hair with water until it's soaking wet. I brush my hair with my Denman Brush(THIS IS KEY). It bring out my curls and clumps them together). After that, I add in my Eco-Styler gel, and brush through again with the Denman brush-as many times needed till I'm satisfied. Lightly shake my hair in between. I usually dry my hair in sections with my blow dryer. As I blow dry my hair I'm also stretching it. I blow dry each section before doing this technique on the next section. IF I don't blow dry I do my whole head and let it air dry(doesn't happen often). After my hair is dry I add my oil mix to to my hands and distribute it throughout my hair, being careful not to disturb my curls. At night I wrap my hair with a silk scarf. In the morning my hair is quashed down NOT matted. The curls are still there and in no way tangled. All I do it stretch out my hair with my hands or use a wide tooth comb to pick it out. I spritz my hair with water and add some oil to remoisturize. I can wear this style for 1-2 week before it starts looking like an unacceptable hot mess. I since I learned how to do a wash n go I've been trying to cut back and do more twist and braid outs as I've notice more single strand knots, but doing this once in a while shouldn't cause any harm.

I've never done a wash and go, and I've been natural my whole life lol. I'm a lazy natural so I almost never have my hair out, it's always twisted up. Also, I love watching 4c naturals do their hair. Dont really care for the hair typing sysyem but I actually learn a lot from 4c naturals. ❤

When I started my hair journey about 6 months ago, I did wash n go’s almost every day. I think because I didn’t know what I was doing and sometimes I think now also.
Just trying new gels or something new. Do far, it has been exhausting but in the end… it is worth it. Although, my hair is a bit longer, which I’m grateful for because before I got the big chop my hair was over processed with relaxer, heat damaged and hair shedding. At present, I try to do a wash n go every two weeks or a couple of days depending on how much product is in my hair. Even though I’m natural now, I wouldn’t change it to chemical treated hair.

LOL your break it down dance at the end too cute. Honestly don't have a Pro for Shampoo and Go. We wash dishes, and clothes not our hair. I have tailbone length 4c hair, and this isn't a style that I feel is really meant for my hair type. Cons way too much product required, knots, tangles, and eventually damage. This style would never make my hair easier to manage.

I am also 4c and I have waaaaayyyy less tangles with a wash and go, when I wash and go every other day. I personally, think wash and go's are great for 4c hair in maintaining moisture which results in length, but they can't be stretched for 7-8 days and just spritzed with water like many naturals are suggesting. Doing them every 1-3 days will make the curls thrive and cut the wash day routine down significantly. I can wash and go my hair in 30 minutes. I do blow dry it when I do it at night, but I'm fine with the minimal loss of moisture from blow drying it, knowing it's going to be dunked again in water in another day or so. I don't shingle and all that jazz cause the definition often gets lost in shrinkage, but I do apply a gel in 1/8 sections of my hair. Try a wash a go, every other day for 4 weeks and let me know how it works out for ya. It might change your life :)

These days I do WNGs pretty much exclusively on my SHORT 4b/4c hair. ;) However, once it gets past a certain length it stops being a WNG because I prefer to take the time to stretch my super-shrinky top. Thanks to UA-camr cynthiarf I was doing kinda-sorta WNGs all the way to CBL but this grow-round I'll probably stop after the 6-inch mark and do stretched styles. With WNGs I moisturize my hair every day (only a little so as to avoid too much shrinkage) so it's never dry. Big pro!

My favourite things about wash n go's are that they're easy and last long. All I do is cleanse my hair once a week and moisturize, throw in some curl activator and I'm good to go! I spritz with a mixture of water, leave in conditioner and jbco every night then put that sucker in 4 ponytails to preseve it😊

Results looked great, nice experimentation. Will never try this style though. It's such a misnomer, they should call it "wash'n manipulate hair for hours 'n spend more time shaping the hair 'n go". It's too much work and the risk of tangles isn't worth it, just watching UA-camrs doing it tires me lol.
    Thanks for sharing!

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I love that you love your hair. It's contagious.
Pros: helps you get comfortable with your natural texture; over time you learn which techniques work best with your hair.
Cons: tangles and sometimes breakage, especially if you aren't moisturizing and being gentle with your hair.

I'm a 4a lifeguard at an outdoor amusement park during the summer, so I've mastered the "wash and go-s". Does anyone have any tips for natural hair that's constantly exposed to over chlorinated pools? I get sun damage (and my hair lightens) and it gets dry from always washing it (but I can't let the chlorine stay so I have to wash).
