    In the process of wash day right now! An expectation I used to have but now realize isn't realistic (especially being 4c) is having no shedding or even a little breakage. I really appreciate you showing the hair that you lost because a lot of these people act as if nothing came of their head in that time. Only having been natural for a year and a half, I used to be freaking out when I lost hair. Now I know (thanks to you NappyFu!) that it's just what hair does!

    My unrealistic expectations were having the energy to prepoo, wash my hair in sections, do a protein treatment, condition AND deep condition, use the loc method to moisturize, and then style.
    Now I do almost none of that and my hair has never thrived more. Keeping it simple.

    My expectation personally for me was that I could detangle in the shower and wash my hair without sections. Without sections my hair gets matted and more tangled every time and my water gets cold by the time I'm done detangling. Detangling before I get in the shower and shampooing in plaits has been a life saver for me.

      Sierra Linton personally I don't wash my hair in sections and I have 4c as well I do a light finger det angle before I wash my hair but I don't actually detangle my hair until the deep conditioning step. Honestly your ability to detangle while in the shower really depends on the products you use. Certain shampoos and conditioners I cannot detangle in shower with and cause tangling while others do not.

    • @sierralinton7882
      @sierralinton7882 5 років тому +1

      @@neishachambers2719 my deep conditioners never gave me enough slip to do it that way unfortunately.( I use shea moisture hair masques) And to shower detangle I would use aussie conditioner vo5 hello hydration or any other conditioner well known for good slip. Not that I wasn't impressed with the slip, they're great conditioners, I just still found detangling beforeto work best for me. I save water and time in the shower.

    • @sable7114
      @sable7114 5 років тому

      neisha chambers I don't understand how people detangle with deep conditioners cuz my thought is the jar says to rinse out after 20 minutes or maybe 30 minutes and it would take me too long to the d'tangle you no longer than that. so then I think the deep conditioner is going to have some negative effect on my hair if I allow it to stay on too long.

    • @neishachambers2719
      @neishachambers2719 5 років тому +2

      Sierra Linton use the shea moisture coconut oil masque I can't remember the name but it is honestly life changing. I like shea moisture masques but usually they sit on top of my hair until I go under the dryer. This one sinks in immediately. I usually don't detangle until I come from under the dryer but with this one I can detangle in the shower. Also cleansing conditioners have amazing slip. I've tried 2 from Pantene that were great but biolage coarse hair cleansing conditioner is amazing.

Alot of natural bloggers that I see on youtube have much looser/more manageable looking hair than I do, and the tips they give just aren’t realistic for my texture. Seeing someone with hair that seems similar to mine making detailed tutorials, using efficient and relatable techniques, and backing it all up with solid logic is a rare gem. I don't understand some naturals pre poo with a deep conditioner before watching there hair. To me that's wasting the main purpose of a deep condition. That's how people waste money. I don't understand how some naturals cowash when a regular conditioner when the conditioner isn't purpose for cowash. Your hair is still dirty, creating a lot more buildup. Especially a week or two without washing your hair.

    • @tjtanner9311
      @tjtanner9311 5 років тому +25

      I stopped prepooing, realized I didn't need it, so long as I deep condition afterwards which is like every time! Also no point in me pre-detangling when my hair will just tangle back up when I shampoo. It's more about what I do to my hair afterwards that determines the condition of my hair until the next wash day.

    • @AshleyOra
      @AshleyOra 5 років тому +9

      @@mariaklaudia4710 there is nothing wrong to prepoo with a regular condition. My thing is why would you prepoo with a deep conditioner. Some naturals buy a big bottle of conditioner for many uses to deal with the hair but you buy a deep conditioner when the purpose of a deep conditioner is to do whatever it is suppose to do and you prepoo with it. That doesn't make sense.

      The cleaner and wetter my hair is, the tighter it shrinks and tangles up. I need the twist to keep it stretched out so I reach my scalp.

    Heyyyy, I see that length girl. A rinse out conditioner can be used as a deep conditioner if you add some carrier oils. Deep conditioner, rinse out, leave in: if you look at the ingredients they are so similar. Anyways DIYs are good too but watch the pH. I was in sophermore in highschool and I used african black soap with baking soda to wash my hair and after a few wash days(about a month later) my scalp was itchy. I didn't realize the pH of both were alkaline. I did too much diys with out enough research and eventually i shaved my head. Im a senior in highschool now and I'm starting over from the beginning.

    The expectation that I once had which quickly went away is that I could wash my hair within a certain a timeframe. In fact I just washed my hair this morning and it took time but it was deliberate because I don't want to miss any steps. I have been natural for almost 4 years and honestly speaking I have not found products that I feel have greatly enhanced my hair, which was another thing I had come to terms with: finding the right product and method will take time. So what I have learned thus far is this: wash day takes time and plan the day you will wash your hair and COMMIT to that day, use the hair care products you have at home and do not waste your money buying new ones until you have finished your current one unless it is necessary, and be patient for Rome was not built in a day. I could add more but this will end up being a long post. Thank you for the video! H-town represent! I'm from Dallas but it's all good because Texas is all up in this :-)!

    Heyyyy sis...hey Fu! 😋 Showing you lots of love all the way from the ATL.
    Awesome, funny and informational video as always. You keep our type 4 hair in check. Thanks for always keeping it real, naturally.
    An unrealistic wash day expectation for me was a 30 minute wash day routine on 4b / 4c hair. Where's my mama belt? 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ That a hot wrong disrespectful mess. I stepped away from the videos on UA-cam and put the work in. Realistically, it takes 2 hours to thoroughly detangle; 1 hour to prepoo; since my hair is in 16 sections due to kinky coily curls, I unravel each section and lather shampoo on them. That takes 20 minutes. Afterwards, I deep condition for 1 hour and style for 2 - 3 hours. I dedicate one day to my hair and take my time. It has definitely thanked me for it. After 4 years of being natural, I have obtained at least 15 inches of hair.
    Our kinks and coils are worth it 🙌🙌🙌
    Thanks for sharing 💙💚💛🧡

    🤗Hey Girl, HEEEY! We have completely different hair texture, BUT I need someone like you in my daily life. You make me laugh, your information and delivery style gets
    👍🏽👍🏽. 4C Naturals are not the only ones struggling! There are regular folks like me, who fall somewhere between 3s and 4s, unable to retain length or longevity with hairstyles, etc. Where there is easiness in one area, there is a struggle in others. Basically, the grass is not always greener on the other side. Anyway, I'm just here to take away whatever I can to help me do a better job with what God gave me. Thank you for what you do!💞

    I thought every wash day I could cut out single strand knots while detangling and it took me HOURS to do this! I realized I have to dust in between washes, I can not spend all day cutting out knots #lessonlearned 😂

    • @sable7114
      @sable7114 5 років тому +2

      Danielle Sappleton I braid my hair in three to four sections on wash day but leave the ends, where I would normally get single string knots, loose in put a little girls tiny barrette at the ends with the hair spread a little which keeps it from tying to each other or forming little single strand knots.

Don’t get me wrong I love being natural and having 4c hair, but I don’t love it because I don’t take care of it the way I should. If I did I know my hair would be sooooooo much further along, even after all the breakage I’ve had after child birth and such. I I love you and agree with 95% of what you said. I do not agree with what you said about shampooing. I cannot use shampoos. My hair and scalp cannot recover moisture after using chemicals such as shampoos regularly. I cleanse with a mixture of aloe Vera juice and ACV and water. My scalp gets cleansed without stripping. As a child, my grandmother NEVER used shampoos or chemicals on my hair and I had braids to my butt. I spent summers and holidays with her in the tropics and she had aloe and cactus growing everywhere. On Saturdays she would cut a piece of cactus and aloe and scrub my scalp with both and a teaspoon of homemade ACV then wrapped my hair in a plastic bag for a few hours before washing it all out with water. She then slapped on a cup of coconut milk (my granddad would have chopped the coconut that morning and she had grated and extracted the milk), bag me again for an hour, rinse then brushed with a plastic brush (aka The Denman Brush that is all the rave today as though it was some new miracle invention KMT 🤣), slathered with Castor Oil (homemade of course) and rebraided for the week. No shampoos, no prepoo, no after poo...Nothing chemical or packaged. She woukd send me back to Canada for the school term with my suitcase of natural goodies for my mom to take over. So I went back to my roots over a year ago by eliminating shampoos and chemicals. My hair cannot stop thanking me. Find what works.

      @@politereminder6284 Thank you. Grams is indeed amazing and still going at 90. She and my grandfather lived an organic nature based tropical lifestyle that kept us healthy from head to toe when we visited for holidays.... The complete opposite of life in a big North American city. I was guided back to my roots because I developed lupus and allergies to most processed products. Almost 2 years natural in every way and my hair is thriving and has gone from a cute tiny little 1/4 inch fro to a big curly fro that would make Thelma from Good Times jealous 😁. I keep it braided in 6 thick neck length braids when I don't have social commitments.

      Its funny how so many "taboo" hair regimens we did back in the day had our hair growing like weeds but now days, doing those same things like greasing your scalp is considered bad.... things that make you go hmmmm

    • @lenawebb-bey3642
      @lenawebb-bey3642 5 років тому +23

      Akilah C. Exactly. I remember my grandmother could press your hair for church and it would stay that way not for days, but a week. To be honest, we only washed our hair once a month.
      Grandma believed that greasing our scalp protected us from lice. 😂. We had a lot of lice breakouts in our school. We never had them. If grandma found out about lice breakouts, she would head for the sulfa 8 for extra protection. 😂. Burned like crap. Today’s version much milder.

      Yeah, I don't pree-po either. I gave it a fair chance, but it's a pointless step for me. What makes my hair happy is when I keep things simple without a bunch of steps. No need to complicate things when I just need to wash, condition, and deep condition. Even my DIY stuff isn't that complicated.
