This is my favorite LS song! I decided to get rid of "That Smell" 1/2/2015. Free and clean from heroin for 7 years and haven't looked back!
That's awesome!
Fantastic! I bet it was like stepping into a whole new world!,
Great news. Life is better sober.
Super.. Wonderful to hear. .Enjoy your great time here ... We are like visitors. .Your visit will be so much better without junk ..And it already is !
Hell yeah
Arguably the greatest anti drug song of all time.
Guitarist Gary Rossington ("Prince Charming"), driving his new Ford Torino under the influence, did hit the oak tree referenced in the song ("oak tree you're in my way"). The whole band was living the rock star lifestyle and "That Smell" is an unsubtle warning against drug abuse. This song moves me emotionally. It alone would be quite a legacy to leave behind. I wish young music fans today would hear it and take it to heart. RIP Skynyrd souls.
Ronnie was really pissed off at Gary for wrecking his car. Skynyrd was unable to tour until he was healthy and able to hit the road again. Ronnie fined him $5K for costing the band tour money.
@@larrylawson2912 Ironically, Gary outlived all the original founding members (including surviving the plane crash) and toured with the revived Skynyrd, until his death March 5 of this year. Early drummer Artimus Pyle is still around.
The song was written as a warning to guitar player Gary Rossington who was doing all the things mentioned in the song. After the success of the first album and tour, he crashed his car into an oak tree during a night of partying. He delayed the second tour by months. Singer Ronnie Van Zant(band leader) was furious and worried about fellow band member Gary Rossington. So he wrote this song as a warning to Gary and all others who indulge. Oddly enough, with all of Gary's vices, he was the last surviving member of the original band.
Epically under-rated band....in my top 5.
Yes. 💥💥💥👍😎
Yes. Incredible talent.
At the time they were NOT an under-rated band, almost everyone I knew owned at least one of their albums
Artmus Pyle on drums, Billy Powell on keys,RIP Gary Rossington,on guitar 🎸
This is their best track
This album was released three days prior to the tragic plane crash on October 20th 1977 in Mississippi.
The spirit of this great band lives on and on.
P.S. Chod, I want to send you and Dee a gift, in appreciation for your reactions to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Where may I send it to?
Peace Out 😊✌️
In concert, this song with 3 guitars killing it and dragging out that last shrill, haunting note is awesome…
That's Gary Rossington closing it out
This album really took their production quality to another level.
And your right , SKYNYRD doesn't have a song to let you down !!
By all means do take the time to watch them perform these songs live. They all had an amazing stage presence.
Great LS song, deep subject matter. One of their best and the kings of Southern Rock, at least in my opinion. ✌️🔥
Only the best band ever..this one is up there with Freebird in concert!!!
Just got back from seeing them in concert tonight. Was a incredible evening, and yes, they did this song. 🙂
You have to watch "Call Me the Breeze," Live at Knebworth 1976!!!!!!!
"The smell of Death surrounds you."
I saw on Ebay a sealed brand-new vinyl of this record, going for just over 500 us dollars....WOW!
You mentioned that you would like to see this live. Well, there is an excellent live video of this tune. They haven't even put it on vinyl yet but played it on stage. It's an old black and white video. The video is a little grainy but the sound is excellent and it is an absolute Kick-Ass performance. You must look it up.
+1 to that!!!
The album cover you see in this video was released just days before the plane crash, it was pulled from circulation & re released without the flames. Regardless, it was one of their best albums, IMO!
@Gregory Simmers Grabbed it at a record store about 15 years ago such a cool cover despite the history. Totally agree that Steve Gaines revitalized their sound
A song that is still talking about our day as well…with drug abuse on the rise, you might be here today, but over do it, and tomorrow you might be taking your last breath….
fire... I saw you catching that open high hat during the solo
The guitar work on this cut is unbelievably good! RVZ was a genius.
My favorite from LS!!! Clean from nose candy for almost 10 years. I remember the first hit and I remember the last hit. Love your channel! Keep rockin’! ✌🏻❤️
I am not sure how many times they did this live, because the plane crash was right around the same time as the album being released. I know they played it when I saw them July 2, 1977 in Oakland.
Ronnie said Steve Gaines the newest guitarist here, was basically a game changer, and watching the live versions of Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama - I can see why
The album released 3 days before the crash
They proved you can't have too many guitarists.
Artemis Pyle was the drummer he is one of the luck ones that survived the plane crash
Only 2 on the album cover died in the crash. Ronnie Van Zant in the brown pants and Steve Gaines in the red shirt next to Ronnie. Steve's sister Cassie was a Honkette, one of the backup singers and she also died in the crash and a band manager. Billy Powell, the piano player lost his nose and had it reattached. The crash was in a very rural area and Artimus managed to climb out and walk to get help. People were coming on the plane and stealing souvenirs. This is in all the youtube interviews related to the crash. Artimus and Gary Rossington are the only ones alive yet.
I wasn't sure anymore I have had a few seizures and have a hard time remembering something in the long term section of the gray matter
Sue Cook Thank you, I wasn't sure anymore I have had a few seizures and have a hard time remembering something in the long term section of the gray matter
I have such memories of listening to these guys while shooting 9 ball or Snooker at the pool hall.
1 of my favorite bands Love good guitar playing and blues rock
That Smell & The Needle and The Spoon both 70's interventions done Skynyrd style!
The album cover was replaced out of respect for members that died and their families. The flames in the back were taken out.
The rhythm guitar and drums play awesome together. Thumping kick drum gives that country feel.
EVERYYYYY SONG ON THIS 77 ALBUM ( STREET SURVIVORS ) WAS A BANGERRR CHOD 😊 YOU WANT THE GREAT PIANO JUMPER : I KNOW A LITTLE 😊 TAKE GOOD CARE GUYS!
Check out the songs “Needle and the spoon” and “On the Hunt” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, old school, and in my opinion, their best work! 🥁🎸🔥💣👍🏽
Funny thing is, as I was coming up, I saw many a person do most of the things he's singing about while jamming out to the song.
Love to hear you play some of THE WHO. Drummer Keith Moon I think is one of the best drummer's that ever was.
Behind Blue Eye's, Won't Get Fooled Again, Bargin is a good tune one of my favorite.
Love your channel but commercials in middle of a tune? Have a great week.
The message was don’t do drugs! Thought it was great they were trying to get clean themselves slowly before the crash! 😊🎸☀️🌵❤️🇺🇸🙏
Definitely an anti-drug song. Artimus is still an excellent drummer. He’s no longer with Skynyrd, but is still active. The backup singers are, The Honkettes.
Been clean now 11yrs.after 3 in prison for dealing it was my oldest daughter who got me out of my misery when she reminded me my promise I would always be here for her
One of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio and actually getting into...as a little kid way too young to understand the meaning :)
Other gems on this album are 'Ain't no good life' and 'I know a little'. Though the entire album is great.
Just keep listening to it Mama. It will grow on you I promise. 🤘🤘🎸🎸🎤
One of the first bands if not the first band to bring the Southern Rock genre the world.
Allman Brothers?
We were listening to the Allman Brothers before them but right up there with the Brothers..
@@uofm4life735 ZZ Top i still think was earlier
This came out when I was a kid. It reminded me of the "Uncles" that died. It sucked being around the drugs.
😄 1970 Freshman at Collage. just imagine, your in your dorm room. Collages just made it Okay for Boy's and Girls to be in the same dorm building. Not on the same floor. Oh fun times. late at night after they did security walk around. You creep out in the hall. looking for that SMELL ohhh yeh. secret knock on the door. Room packed with all the hip kids... totally toked out of it. a very very large Bong in the middle of the room. Black lights only and wall with all the hip posters glowing. Man if my Mom and Dad knew what we were doing on campus at collage. LOL Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of many albums that was played back at those secret party's, almost every song had something to do with getting high, and Free Love. Oooh that Smell. 😂🤣
My fav!! ❤
Ronnie Van Zant/Allen Collins intervention 101.
Gary Rossington, all really, were partying hard, he wrapped his car around a tree, causing delays, etc. Ronnie fined him too.
So tragic and sad, gone way too soon. I remember that day in 77, 2d later it was my besties bday and we weren't celebrating. 😪
Ironic, Gary is the only remaining LS member to date. 👀
Epic song lyrically and instrumentally!
Good cautionary tale.
Skynyrd always bring it.
There is a live version of a club concert performed right before the plane crash. Dee will enjoy that better
😂 Not a club. They stopped playing clubs in about 72-73. The clip you are referring to is Bill Grahams Winterland which held about 5.500 -It was in San Francisco. The entire show was filmed in black and white too
WOW! I had that exact album with that cover before they changed it. Wish I still had it.
Hey Chod and Dee!! Next you should check out "I Need You", slow bluesy vibe, I think you'll dig it! ✌️ ☮️ 🇱🇷🎼🎶🎵🎸❤️
My favorite by Lynyrd Skynyrd hope you love love you guys
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Pink Floyd
3. The Rolling Stones
4. Lynyrd Skynyrd. 😎
YOU SEE THE ALBUM WITH THE FLAMES??? THAT WAS A COLLECTORS EDITION, THEY HAD MADE IT WITH AND WITHOUT, WITH OF COURSE REPRESENTS THE PLANE IN FLAMES 🙃🙃🙃THE SINGER ORIGINALLY WAS ( RONNIE VAN ZANDT ) 😊
That's Ronnie Van Zannt on the vocals, his 2 brothers Donnie And Johnnie are a part of 38 special. Too bad they couldn't have put their musical differences aside to play together.
@@leesutton3167 do you know about their other group called Van Zannt?
Where do you get your information? There were no differences between the three Van Zant brothers at any time. Ronnie was in Skynyrd, Donnie was in 38 Special, Johnny had his own band and since 1987 replaced Ronnie as the lead singer of Skynyrd. Donnie and Johnny made a couple albums as Van Zant. Skynyrd and 38 toured together at times in the 70's and Donnie would join Ronnie on stage at times. The brothers were very close.
HEY CHOD, HI DEE!!! 😊HOPE YOU GUYS ARE DOING WELL!😊
It was a real simple song about our generation dying from the drugs around us. Ronnie wrote it after his lead guitarist wrecked his car into a tree and nearly died. Back then we all knew what this song was about. Too many drugs, drinks and smoke. I quit it when I was 18. Had to. I still have a cocktail though now and then.
Dude, Listen to Don Mclean American pie. Buddy Holly, Richie valence, and members of Lynard Skynard died on a plane ride that lasted 5 minutes in 1959.
What?
NOTE, that album cover with the fire back ground was taking off the shelves and replaced with a black background after the plane crash.
This song is written bout the band member standing next to the guy in the white suit in your thumbnail... Gary Rossington
You ever see that album for sale, buy it quickly. It’s worth a lot of money. Has to have the flames on it, just like the picture here.
This was wrote after Gary Rossington ,crashed his Ford Torino into a tree right after he drove it off the car lot, drugs do things to the body & mind you cant explain. his nick name was ( prince charming)
The message is the biggest part. That smell of drugs. Bad thing. Huge message
It's the smell of death.
Chod, you should play I Never Dreamed off the same album for the Mrs. A love song with a wicked Steve Gaines solo at the end.
a lot of these songs were great for the car radio in contrast to sit down groove audio only Ex Pink Floyd Song Sorrow. Pulse Concert Live 94. That's an experience and musical adventure.. Turning heads for those reacting.
Tomorrow may not be here for “you” and ironically the drug and alcohol abusing member of the band was the last original member to die just a few weeks ago, as of this post. My favorite song from them too.
On the Hunt and Searching banger’s 🔥🔥🔥
It’s always been my favorite song about death
Southern rock was a genre.
This song, and album has many ironies associated with it, I’ll Just list 2.
The song “That Smell”,, Was written by Ronnie as aWarning to the whole band including himself, but pointedly at Gary Rossington, who mixing Heroin and alcohol had lost control of his car and crashed into a Tree, after partying. The line “ a tree got in your way”, “ The Smell of Death Surrounds You”’. “Angel of Darkness is Upon You”, and “Now the call young Prince Charming”, Over45 Years later Gary Rossington is the only surviving original member alive! All 3 guitarists had solos on this song, Gary’s was the last and most unique!
Second irony is The original Album cover for Street Survivors had flames around the band , that album cover was pulled after the plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines as well,as backup singers and band crew 3 days after the albums release. I have 2 original albums with the flames. Much later on CD release they did include the flames, I guess enough time went by!
County vibe ? Yeah that’s why it’s called country rock
I understand what Dee is saying...Chod right too.....I love "Gimme 3 Steps" LOLOLOL
Oh that girl be looking good at girl be looking good brother
can you do a reaction to Railroad Song by Lynyrd Skynyrd
nice pick guys
Oh yea!
Get some headphones!💯🙄 Y'all are missing out out on some great production!😞❤️✌️
Skynyrds best
Lost my youngest son from opioids only 29 years old, you shouldn't out live your children ,miss him every day!!😢
You guys should do cry for the bad man and on the hunt.
Legendary southern rock band!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
They did away with the flames on the album cover after the airplane crash. Out of respect to the families. If anyone has that album cover, hang on to it.
after the plane crash this album cover was stop with the fire
I have the Remastered STREET SURVIVORS CD,EXCELLENT!!!!!!!
That smell of death. ☠️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
i remember going out and buying this album and returning home and playing this song my roommate was upstairs in the bathroom getting ready to shoot up some cocaine. this record you missed the whole relevance of this song, this song was recorded and then their plane crashed and killed ronnie VanZant and a few more of the band. this was his tribute song talking about their lives in general. Love you guys, but you missed the entire relevance of the foreshadowing of their lives and the end of their lives!
Is it a plus to have her completely disinterested while classic music plays? By her expression and musical sophistication she'd rather be watching TV. She just doesn't get it.
Oak Tree your in my way !
Must do Saturday night special
Have you tried "Saturday Night Special?"
😍😍😍🔥💯
There's too much Coke and too much Smoke, the way I would do it... The Needle In your arm... Never needles... If I can say no 💯🤣this song fin rocks.
I smoked the Crack n Ice.., it's been many years.... 🤣
Heroin.,. Never smoked. That different. Pill form in light quantities... Yah but nothing...
I felt nothing maybe because I'm an Alkie guaranteed that still gets off with Vodka, grapefruit and weed... 🔥
Do you ever let her speak ? I'd really like her insight on the song.
Rick James - Ghetto Life
Hey, guys…
I like what you have to say, but I have to adjust the volume *constantly* because the reviewed item is about 4x the level your voices.
Get *right up on* that mic.
You’ll get more subscribers, guaranteed.
There first album had FREE BIRD+SIMPLE MAN
This song is good. But, my top choice is 'Simple Man'.
That album cover was pulled almost immediately after the deadly plane crash.Ironically, the plane didn't burn on impact,it had not one drop of fuel left, pilots neglected to refuel. No fuel, no fire. R.I.P. boys.
I saw in an interview with Gary Rossington and Billy Powell that the album cover was shot on the set of the movie The Sting.
@Kevin Smith I’ve still got the copy I bought before the crash. The inner liner has a listing of all the dates on the U.S. tour that they didn’t get to finish.
@@Macilmoyle I was 16 at the time of the crash, had tickets to see them about a week later in Columbus, Ohio. I stupidly returned my ticket for a refund, knowing at the time I’d regret it, I don’t even remember what was so important at the time, ignorance of youth.
@@Macilmoyle Saw them at a festival in Sedalia,Mo. in like 71,had not heard of them. Also hadn't heard of The:EAGLES,AEROSMITH,Z.Z.TOP, ALLMAN BROTHERS, they all played. Christ, was I really ever that young?
Can't Imagine what that's(your album ) worth. My older brother worked in a music store in the Chi when they got in the Beales dead baby album. About an hour after unboxing & displaying they were pulled. My brother stole one & still has it. Last offer was $40,000 & he still won't sell.
The absolute best version of this great one is the live version of the 2005 Vicious Cycles Tour DVD from Nashville. The guitar trio of Gary Rossington,Rickey Medlocke, and Hughie Thomasson( rip,of The Outlaws fame) play the hell out of this.
