Ian Armitage making it about the loft isn't any better than making it about the number on the club, and the fact that you mentioned distance as well is an important point overlooked by most commenters regurgitating the lower loft equals left spin arguement. yeah the lofts are lower and the spin rates lower because of it, but there's also a higher launch to consider which will also have an effect on the stop on greens, and change the distance the club goes. so if youre 200 yards out, you might pull a 7 iron with these clubs, but a 6 or even 5 iron with a conventional players iron. that would be a more interesting comparison, and it would be important to look at both spin and height/descent angle (and forgiveness). it's also important to remember the different players these irons are aimed at. most high handicappers don't deloft the club as much at impact as better players do and may easily present a dynamic loft much more similar to a conventional iron hit by a better player, and for them having clubs that are made to get some extra distance and are easier to get in the air than a blade is important. so I agree ricks simple comments on spin being lower aren't very useful, but relating it to loft alone doesn't really make much more sense either.
Rick Shiels Golf during a fitting would it be possible to increase that spin with a different shaft. Also can the degree be changed due to that hosel or is it just lie?
I've just returned from the future. The 2030 set of Ping Gwiz Irons have a 19 degree 9 iron and then 7 wedges varying from 23 to 46 degrees (power wedge, mid wedge, utility wedge, gap wedge, wonder wedge, lofting wedge, and lolly wedge). However, Taylor Made announced that they are dropping their 15 degree 9 iron and will only include wedges in their sets from now on.
I just bought a set of G400's after playing G20 irons which were really solid, but I lost a 1/2 a club in distance with the G20's. Hoping the G400's with stronger lofts get me back to hitting a 7 iron 150 yards. Great Video Rick!!!
bro. everytime u demo a "chunky" set of irons you always end up hitting them the best. can't understand why you can't get over it like your skinny buddy with the glasses. cheers mate. Lori. bonnet. fish and chips. the queen mother.
Fantastic video, I was once a Low single digit HCP . But after 9 Knee surgeries I'm carrying about a 15-17 and my problem is Distance, I simply can't turn my body around completely and get that Howitzer to Fire. My Short game is Wicked and I can roll the rock, Problem is I can't get into low iron range from off the tee anymore. So seeing these irons make me drool at the thought of being able to pick up a 5 or 6 iron again and take it home. God Bless Rick, Keep em in the Short Grass Mate.
I hear common theme with M2, Epic and the G400 irons which is “goes far but won’t hold the green”. Can you do a closest to pin contest with a club that has spin numbers you like (Wilson V6) vs one of these irons that don’t have good spin numbers? I know the low spin irons are designed for different players but it would neat to see the difference on video. I know I prefer to putt after a good iron shot instead of chipping back on the green! Thanks Rick!
G400 and equivalent irons will hold the greens just the same as any other club of equal loft. The G400 7-iron has the same lost as most OEM's 6-irons. If you hit the two side-by-side, I guarantee you will have very similar spin rates per loft, while the G400 type clubs will have a higher apex for even more stopping power. The myth that SGI clubs can't hold greens is completely bogus.
Magic Roundabout Really the g400 7 iron has 30 degrees of loft traditional loft for a 7 irons is 33-34 degrees so it has more of a 6 iron loft than a 7 that’s why it goes futher
I bought the G Max last year after I watched your review. They did what you said they would and I couldn`t be more happy about them! :) Another great video Rick, keep up the good work!
I personally never have a problem stopping any club really on greens that I play on and I have pretty strong lofted irons. Spin rate in my opinion doesn't matter as much as people are worried about now. Unless your playing on greens that are extremely hard I think most players will take the extra distance and forgiveness over the extra 500-1000 spin
Just used my G400 irons for the first time today. Used to have G15's. WOW....I have a serious man-crush on these stix. These things are just terrific and the feel is so nice. Had a 190 carry all the way over water, dead into a gusting 20mph wind today. My 5 iron busted that ball onto the green (OK...the front, when the pin was back), and stuck it. Had a long putt but the shot made even my smart aleck son gasp. These things are dead on.....target seeking weapons. Man I love them so far.
@@Ryasis12345 did you like them mate. I’m a fairly high handicapper and want some forgiving clubs, but not prepared to pay the price of brand new ones. id rather buy lessons with the difference. so just seeing what clubs are fairly forgiving
@@KxrtButReal Still use them to this date. These will be my go to. But it helped when I went from out of a box clubs to a fitted set. This is what improved my game...........as best as it did lol, made my form and swing better.
So are you saying the g 400 will not stop as quick as a g 30?? I would want my ball to sit on the green than roll out. Based on that should I go with G 30? I would rather give up some yards to have the ball hit and stop on the green. Please advise Rick. Your vids are tremendous! Thanks
Companies will sell these clubs to people because they think there 7 iron is going 10-15 yards more when in reality its actually a 6 iron loft. Most high handicappers or people new to golf wont understand this so Rick makes a good point about spin numbers and is honest about loft. If your hitting your PW 150 yards it also leaves a terrible gap in your short game that you have to fill with even more wedges (more money for them).
it seems obvious to me that Rick understands this, and that he is just expressing his disappointment in the growing lack of universability of club categorization. Over the years, better players have come to expect a level of control with what is typically considered a 7 iron, so he is just making it clear that this is not just a "long" 7 iron and stressing the fact that you will lose "control" compared to what you probably expect from a 7.
As a very high handicapper using 2012 Rocketballz irons, would you find it worth investing in a set of game improvement irons like the Ping G400, or any other company? Is it better to just stick with the rocketballz and figure things out?
I own the Ping 400 regular. Great height. My shots are not running off the green. Used Mizuno’s for over 20 years and have no regrets. I am a senior golfer carrying a 10 handicap.
Can you compare a 7 iron in a set like this with a 6 iron in a normal lofted set so we can see how much the tech is actually affecting it and not just the loft.
Daniel Cooper tech doesn’t affect anything. It’s a gimmick. Tech may improve feel or very very slightly function. However if you think all the extra distance comes from the eyelet in the back..it doesn’t.
Robert Davis that is completely untrue. Irons with a high COR are proven to launch higher and come off with more ball speed than a normal blade of equal loft. Plenty of research out there to prove it. Rick is by far the most ignorant UA-camr when it comes to testing clubs. Check out TXG Channel they’ve got all the data you need.
I love my g400s. Now, I've just got to learn how to hit them. Lol. The g400 max driver is an absolute beast. I've got a little 5 hybrid with 22° of loft and it is super sweet. Going to play today after figuring out how to "feel" impact by hitting an impact bag. A light went on because all I've been doing is swiping at it, not hitting right in front of the ground. It's almost like chopping a tree down except you don't stop after you make the strike right in front of the ball. I've been doing that wrong for nearly 20 freakin years now. Never had a coach so UA-cam has become mine. Shout out to Danny Maude. Awesome teacher. Check out his impact videos if you are struggling with that.
I played G15 the last six years and moved up to the G400 this year. Played six rounds so far with the G400. I've gone up 15 yards a club but surprisinly have had much better results when I miss hit a shot with the G400. I thought about going with a blade this time but decided to stay with GI clubs. I'm shooting on average 10 strokes less than last fall. Couldn't be happier with the clubs or my decision to stay with amateur clubs.
Just bought the ping G400 irons and straight away I could feel the difference from my old iron. I would use 6/7 iron on my local course par 3s but with my ping G400 I'm getting on the green with my 8 iron easy.
Thanks for the review Rick! The only thing I would say is the last few top manufacturers you have reviewed you have said the exact same thing about the spin numbers being low because of the decreasing loft. I wonder is this just the way the game is going and in the future that's just the numbers that every club will be producing?
LJ & Son's VLOGS I think the issue with Benross is not so much about build quality in a structural integrity sense, more about the quality of finish. I don't see any greater risk of the head flying off a Benross club than say a Taylor Made for example.
I bought them and they are great. They feel and perform like a champ. I don't have an issue stopping on the green since they fly so high. I was worried about it before buying them but it turned out not to be an issue.
Totally agree with Ian Armitage, spin is relative to the distance, a ball carrying 185 yards and spinning at 5200rpm is doing ok, in one breath rick says it not a 7iron it's a 6iron because of the loft, then goes straight on to say the spin is too low for a 7iron.. that's because clearly it isn't and is spinning pretty damn close to a 6iron??? Rick please do a review of your own clubs, show us the results for the iron that carries the same distance with simailar swing speed and show the spin numbers.. I bet there isn't much difference to these g400 or any other game improvement iron???!!!
These irons look a lot like the Ping Eye 2 + set I had back in the early 90s. They've always made great irons in my opinion. Looking forward to trying these out.
Spin is not an issue with these irons but if it were simply weaken the lofts 1 degree on your 7 iron shots and spin goes up. It is the variable that is easiest to fix.
rick they look & sound great low to mid hcp players iron. i think your right gmax or g are maybe for me as im a 27 hcp newbie i am thinking of a new set for this year as ive start golf with a very full set of Dunlop MAX Driver 3/5 Woods & 3-9-P-SW & a Tracy II Putter. thanks for all your volgs very very good & helpful
Get the lofts weakened as much as possible for a cast iron, and you've got an A+ club for the mid capper. Forgiving, but add a little more spin to stop on greens.
Love your reviews, Rick! Your channel pure gold. I'm learning a lot. I'm looking forward to the woods. I didn't really understand what you were saying about if these would be good for a high handicapper. What do you think?
Please do a 3 shot closest to the pin with your V6 6 iron. On the course though. This 7 iron is carrying exactly 10 yds further and 1000 less spin than you current 7 iron, hence it's really a 6 iron. Would love to see a stopping test and dispersion test with your forged game improvement Wilsons. Also peak height is about the same as yours. 1 yd lower on the Ping. These look really good if the distance dispersion stays close on the course.
I know this is an old video, but I just read an article from Jonathan Whal of Golf Magazine (or is it Golf Digest?) who went to a Senior (excuse me, "Champions") Tour event and actually found these irons in the bag of Jesper Parnavik!
Rick, I understand your take on the spin numbers, but might it be better to compare a like-yardage club (one that hit a similar yardage) rather than just the old 7-iron vs new 7-iron? Just seems I toggled might be a more apples to apples comparison, as opposed to looking at the lack of spin for a given iron? Just a thought. Cheers! Lee
Hi Rick :-) just one question. I am looking for my first golf clubs ever. Which ones irons you will prefer? TaylorMade M1, TaylorMade PSi or Ping 400? :-) Thank you for your help :-) ...my handicap is 32
Rick, not being disrespectful but you keep saying 'spin to low' 'wont hold the green'. Younare firing arrows and bullets with these clubs but keep saying about the spin. Lets see you take these out on the course and see what the 'real' results end up as. I for one would love to see how you score with them in comparison to a higher spinning club. All we ever see is GC data rather than real life results.
Now im no Rick shields, but i can tell you that i have had absolutely no troubles getting my G400s to stay on the green. They perform wonderfully on grass let me tell ya.
@@lastuberman Yeah i love mine aswell, and i have absolutely no trouble adding backspin either, they're very very versatile, comes with a huge amount of forgiveness(probably the most forgiving irons i've ever tried) so i am not sure what Rick is on about here. I will agree that adding a few wedges off other brands such as Titleist or Cleveland might be a solid solution, i'm currently exploring adding another wedge (a forged one) I currently have 4-9 and a LW/GW in my bag, so i've been considering a sand or pitch from Titleist or Mizuno. For my woods i have G400 Max, and G400 3 Wood along with a Taylormade GAPR MID, when i've added a sandwedge to my bag i think i'll be covered on all distances. Taylormade GAPR Mid is a great purchase might i add, it's fantastic to have a tool that can keep the ball down when playing into the wind. On my course wind can be a REAL pain, so fighting up wind on a couple of the par 3s can be anywhere between a 6 iron to a 9 iron for me, so when you feel in doubt u can just punt the GAPR to the green and have it roll onto it. Did that 4 times this year in stormy weather and positioned it close to the pin 3 times and the last one kinda took a wierd jump and landed me on the edge of a bunker, but still made par on that one.
Looks are definitely in the eye of the beholder - you love them, I think they look like cheap plastic or rubber in the back. I tried to think of how I could work the word 'symmetricalness' in there, but couldn't :-)
Rick. thanks for your great videos. I am a 28 handicap and by watching your review I got some g400's. now I'm confident my game has improved after this review
I’m a total beginner and my mate has given me some old ping g 25’s , would I benefit from buying these g400’s as I’m a beginner and will play twice a week and I’m nearly 60 , thanks
Hi Rick looking at changing my iorns can you get Rob to try the iorns to see if he can hold the greens , with fitting could they not be set up to give more spin thanks Shaun .🏌
Hey Rick what happens in these clubs when you get an 8 fitted to the same loft as a standard blade with the right lie and length? In other words as forgiving as these clubs are can you get the spin and launch dialed in to the same as your blades with more forgiveness or are these clubs long an uncontrollable no matter what?
I have a question. I am 6'8" and last year I bought Ping G400 white dot, 2" long. I consistanty hit them off of the toe. So much that I have a worn spot on the face of the irons. I hit them dead straight but left of target and no distance. I have played my whole life and I am a +6 Handicap. Could the irons configuration be wrong for me? I followed the Ping chart. Any thoughts? Please...
Luke Ellis Cobra F6 is great with lots of adjustability, you can get them dirt cheap now Cobra have dropped prices in preparation for new clubs being released.
If these clubs all carry a club further, but are a club less in spin, wouldn't the solution be to club down for you, fixing both issues.. Your distance would be as normal and so would your spin. With these, you're just able to use a shorter club to make your same shot. Or I'm misunderstanding something?
Rick any chance of doing a Ping GLE vs Taylormade Kalea review my daughter is making the step up from junior to ladies clubs and there isn't much out there comparing ladies clubs (irons hybrids and woods) you may need help from lady golfer to make a fair comparison
Not understanding - like if you went up a club in loft, foregoing the additional distance, you would get more back-spin landing on the green, no? Or do these clubs, at the same loft as say the previous G's not stop as quickly? Are they essentially worse clubs, but marked with higher numbers to make them seem like they go farther, but in every other way inferior clubs, aside from "looking smart?"
Ping always use the letter of *I ,* G ... The letter *S are so fantastic 's .....G are powerful ...the I are new technologies irons .bring more fun ....added with ....
My advice to people looking at these irons or any brand new expensive irons is simple. Take $100 and go buy a used set of Ping Eye 3's black dot. I actually just saw a set in my local Edwin Watts for $60 and it was a full set. 4-GW. Take the $900 you didn't spend on clubs and use it to buy golfing lessons. Do your research and find a good local pro. It won't take you long to realize that it's the Wizard, not the wand. These new clubs can make a small difference, even a big difference, if you are a pretty good golfer. If you suck, like most people, get better before you drop thousands on golf clubs. You will thank me later.
You hit the five iron as far as my driver haha!! When did it become noticeable to you that you were hitting the ball farther? Love the video! Those irons look great!
Please, do not isolate numbers in 2017. Spin is only part of the picture. Without peak height and descent angle, the picture is incomplete. A ball landing with a 65* angle will stop faster than a ball with 600 rpm more spin and coming down with 59*. ( throwing fake number here) If you want to compare, do the full thing. This is new tech zone. New equations. PXG irons fly higher with LESS loft. Few years ago we understood and use to say companies boost loft for a typical iron number so they fool the client. Not anymore. Always like Rick's work. thanks
when u take spin off irons to get more distance u have trouble getting them to stay on the green. And thats why irons like this just arent really necessary...if u want to hit it further just take an extra club.
not knocking your videos im a fan but this is just my take on clubs like these ping as most of these cast clubs that come out with 2 models per year the only thing that changes is the plastic badge they put inside the cavity and the number they decide to put on it with loft if I was gona play ping irons I'd just buy a set of g5 irons from years ago I'm sure they play same to these besides lofts
can anyone tell me if is there much difference between these and the Ping G irons as i love the look of the G but i find this looks really cheap and plasticky!? Id rather have the G's in my bag but if these are much better then i would reluctantly go for these...

Ian Armitage explain how???
TMI stinker Joe
How wold you compare it to "G"?
I don't have a problem with spin stopping on the green, mine usually stop in the rough
Maybe you could ask Jamie Farr for some pointers? ;)
I've just returned from the future. Can't wait for the LST G400 driver test! I still have the I25 in my bag and I hope it will be a great replacement!
I just recently bought these irons with extra inch to the shaft 70 percent the time I slice them left. I'm 6 4 tall and currently a 36 handicap
The back reminds me of the "Inverted Cone" look of the old TM R7 irons. Your reviews are among the most informative.
Spin numbers low? No. For a 5 irons that flies out there 225 yards, 5500 rpm is spot on. The PW is spinning 9000 average. Not low
:-) Thank you for your help :-) ...my handicap is 32
Hi Freeman,I have been using graphite for over 10 years now,bad elbows and wrists, I have only ever had 1 head come off .
I am very curious as a better player to try these but bent 2.5 to 3 degrees weak. It'll take away a bit more offset and allow for a bit more spin
I'd love to see a head to head, G400 vs G irons vs GMax.
Finally i pick the G 400 rick, coz like you say “easy” “easy” “easy” to hit . Thx u
His ego is too big to play them. They hold greens as good as anything. He would probably play better with them to be honest.
@@Reavix1 I played them last week in a rental set, hit 7 greens and made 4 birdies. That's good for me. These irons were great!
I keep seeing complaints about Rick's reviews. May be time to unsubscribe.
Still got my G20's and don't intend to upgrade so long as I'm a mediocre golfer, but damn these things look cool.
Looks are definitely in the eye of the beholder - you love them, I think they look like cheap plastic or rubber in the back.
I tried to think of how I could work the word 'symmetricalness' in there, but couldn't :-)
Rick, I wish you would do reviews on Bridgestone clubs, especially the irons, they make some great feeling forgings.
Rick are you planning to do an iblade vs i200 review like you hinted at in some of your previous videos? I would LOVE to see that!
I watched this video just to hear you say "Pinguh" 👍
bahahahahaha, I was wondering how you'd spell that
Rick, would love to see you and Rob do a mid handicapper of the G400 and the new TM P-790.
What is the difference between the different colors of the Ping Irons? Black, Yellow, etc?
You should test the g30 irons against the g400; I found that the g30 's were longer.
Just picked up some g 30s
Rick. thanks for your great videos. I am a 28 handicap and by watching your review I got some g400's. now I'm confident my game has improved after this review
I think playing a higher spin ball and getting a decent angle of descent on the short and middle irons might solve the stronger loft issue.
How they for chipping ? Are the faces too hot for shot game shots?
Hey Rick. Love all the videos. Watch them daily. Where can we submit video ideas. I have a great one for you.
I’m a total beginner and my mate has given me some old ping g 25’s , would I benefit from buying these g400’s as I’m a beginner and will play twice a week and I’m nearly 60 , thanks
Please compare the Ping G400 and the Titleist AP1.
Thank you
Nice video Rick. Would’ve loved to see an actual comparison ping G versus paying 407 nine again 79
Question might be a bit dated, but how do you feel it matches up against the Taylor Made M2 Irons?
did you like the G400 better then the G700? Feel, distance, workability, and forgivness?
they look awesome ! i play i20s atm maybe time for an upgrade
Please...
Looking forward to the 3 wood review.... currently looking to replace my current 3w any suggestions for ones to consider are welcome
Luke Ellis Taylormade aeroburner would be a great replacement! It is long, forgiving and has a great feel off the head! Good luck on finding a 3w!
Is it more for newer golfers or mid handicappers because I am a 11 handicap and looking for a Xmas present 👀
Rick any chance of doing a Ping GLE vs Taylormade Kalea review my daughter is making the step up from junior to ladies clubs and there isn't much out there comparing ladies clubs (irons hybrids and woods) you may need help from lady golfer to make a fair comparison
Could be great, if you could display both yards and meters :-)
Not understanding - like if you went up a club in loft, foregoing the additional distance, you would get more back-spin landing on the green, no? Or do these clubs, at the same loft as say the previous G's not stop as quickly? Are they essentially worse clubs, but marked with higher numbers to make them seem like they go farther, but in every other way inferior clubs, aside from "looking smart?"
What type of golfer (skill level) are these suited for?
Any comments on the TT P95 shafts in the g400 from Ping
These or Callaway Rogues?
Or caley x or takomo
Beautiful clubs and great review. Like the farrel (did I spell that right?) on the PING irons. It was such an eye sore prior.
Adam Phillips ferrule
Thank you good sir
Solheim Karsten's great great grandson is running the company... LOL! Come on Rick.
Quest for the Open, USE THESE and practice putting for 4 hours a day and you'll qualify. Shane Bertsch (US PGA Tour) played G irons for a long time.
But 5000 spin is perfect for a 5 iron esp. since that 7 irons has the loft of my 5 iron.
Considered buying clubs that are from after the year 2000?
I'm looking at new clubs at the moment. 21hc and I'm undecided on steelhead XR, M2 or G400/G. anyone played with any of these?
So you got to play like Lee Trevino to use these irons effectively? (Play a roll?)
but if you use diffident golf ball manufacturer balls you will get diffident spins rate then the pro v1s
Ping always use the letter of *I ,* G ... The letter *S are so fantastic 's .....G are powerful ...the I are new technologies irons .bring more fun ....added with ....
How dose the g400 match up to the g iron on data?
How do they compare to the AP3?
OK, so 718AP1 or Ping G400?
I just bought these I got 6600 on back spin for 7 iron
lovely looking club, can I get a really good graphite shaft fitted in it rick
Please, do not isolate numbers in 2017. Spin is only part of the picture.
Without peak height and descent angle, the picture is incomplete. A ball landing with a 65* angle will stop faster than a ball with 600 rpm more spin and coming down with 59*. ( throwing fake number here)
If you want to compare, do the full thing. This is new tech zone. New equations. PXG irons fly higher with LESS loft.
Few years ago we understood and use to say companies boost loft for a typical iron number so they fool the client. Not anymore. Always like Rick's work. thanks
Really enjoy your reviews.
when u take spin off irons to get more distance u have trouble getting them to stay on the green.
And thats why irons like this just arent really necessary...if u want to hit it further just take an extra club.
Please have Harry Potter review these.. thanks Rick, great review
not knocking your videos im a fan but this is just my take on clubs like these ping as most of these cast clubs that come out with 2 models per year the only thing that changes is the plastic badge they put inside the cavity and the number they decide to put on it with loft if I was gona play ping irons I'd just buy a set of g5 irons from years ago I'm sure they play same to these besides lofts
can anyone tell me if is there much difference between these and the Ping G irons as i love the look of the G but i find this looks really cheap and plasticky!? Id rather have the G's in my bag but if these are much better then i would reluctantly go for these...
if i had your swing it wouldnt matter what club i had but i love PING'S
What is the notch for? Why is it there.
good looking clubs. for me anything that looks like it could be a plastic on the back of irons puts me off a bit. feel ever so slightly cheapened.
