  • So have you collected a resurrect jar and not sure what the next steps are? Well in this video I will add a resurrection jar into one of my aquariums. By doing so we can learn together everything to do and expect. I am fully jumping in head first into the food web process and plan and starting it in every tank in my fish room. If there is any information I may have missed in this video please feel free to share it in the comments. I like always want my channel to be about learning and sharing.
    As always I highly recommend checking out the ‪@FatherFish‬ UA-cam channel which I will link below but also on his channel you will find the link for his Discord channel which I have mentioned numerous times in past videos ( and FYI will continue to plug because it’s great). There is so much useful and informative information that if your into any dirted tank style I highly recommend checking it out.
    Please consider subscribing to my channel if you haven’t already and I’m offering memberships to my channel if you want a closer more in depth look at my fish room and my adventures. So join me in thinking outside the box and taking a step back into nature 🌻🍃🍂

    Hi Patty, I enjoy your channel. I have several dirted tanks that have done well, two 75 gallons, one about 50 g, a 29, and a 20 long. I have 10 resurrection jars lined up in a couple of window sills and find them fascinating. I use gallon jars, and each one is quite different. The area I live is pretty dry with very little permanent natural water, so I have collected muck from developed water catchments designed for cattle or wildlife drinkers. Some of these small ponds have been around for decades, and some sometimes dry up, but it is amazing the amount of life that has somehow found their way into them. Each of my jars have muck from different sources and I label them with the date and location collected from. Several are from muck collected from earlier this winter just before they froze over, and it is amazing what has grown in them. I have a microscope, and like to check out what kind of critters are showing up and growing in each jar. The contents keep changing as the months go by.. I've been thinking about dumping them in one of my tanks as you have, to see what comes of it.
    The dirt I used in my tanks came from my compost pit where I started composting material from trees ground up in a wood chipper, mixed with manure. The stuff is well rotted, I screened it and I use at least a couple of inches under about 2 to 3 inches of coarse gravel in my tanks. Plant grow like crazy in these tanks. I also used worm dirt from my red worm beds that were started from the same compost in a couple tanks. That stuff worked great also. I've been so pleased with how these dirted tanks work that I'm planning to set up a 8' long 200 g tank I have.

    What do you think about adding blackworm directly to your aquarium? We have been doing this when resetting the fish room to try and establish a natural food source and in my mind they will help with the substrate (sorry if we have asked this in the past our notifications from UA-cam are spotty at best). I think we also messed up in terms of the amount of soil we added to the aquarium, we threw in an inch of top soil and capped off with about half inch of sand! Plant growth wasn't great initially but now everything is doing really well and we have very very little algae but we are using super low w bulbs, 12w except on the big 450 we setup the other day! Its all an experience and learning curve but we def added WAYYYYY to much soil (but its working after some time so all good?!) appreciate you brother!

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  4 місяці тому +1

      I have never dealt with black worms before but it sounds like that is a plausible scenario. I will be curious to see how that works out for you guys.
      It didn’t sound like you had too much soil but not enough cap. Good rule of thumb is 1 inch soil to 2 inch sand. I unfortunately have dealt with algae( mostly green hair algae) in a few of my tanks but I believe it’s because I didn’t have enough fast growing stem plants in there which is also a rule of thumb .. add lots of stem plants.. it definitely is all a learning curve and experience and that’s why I love having this channel to show my ups and downs to potential help someone in the same situation and so I can also learn from other hobbyists.
      I appreciate you as well and thank you for the constant support 🙏😁👍

    • @Aquadiction
      @Aquadiction 4 місяці тому +1

      @@pattys_aquatics appreciate the reply and your thoughts, not dealing with any sort of cloudy water or algae so far touch wood, but i kinda put that down to a ton of cherry shrimp and the 12w bulb! Electric is going down in the UK next month so will be switching to some high end lights and see what happens with the Algae then! Something else we are doing wrong I suspect is using black sand which is a bit more course than normal sand! This is why I should have asked more questions BEFORE setting up the tanks from you, note to future self for me :) Have a fab weekend!!!

      I had my resurrection jar running for months in a little glass bowl and those creatures were fine in there and it didn´t smell or go bad. At the end the water got little brown when those leaves broke down. I just added some water when it evaporated and had some duckweed on the top but I think it could be fine without because it didn´t grow. And I was amazed how it could be living months without doing nothing 😲I added the water from there to my tank to feed my fish with those tiny creatures and then let the bowl be and grow more creatures. Now I put the rest of it to my tank because I wanted add the worms from the bottom to my tank but maybe I start it again... Or, I have also a little jar dirted tank that I made to isopods that I found from nature when I was starting the resurrection jar and it has light and plants and there are so many small things living in it because I have added some stuff from the resurrection jar to it. And maybe I start taking that water now to feed my fish. I have dried leaves to add to my tank and that jar to keep everything running.

    Hey patty, how often are you adding resurrection jar material to your aquariums?

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  3 місяці тому

      It really depends on the material. The two jars I added in this video were almost eaten away by 2 weeks so I have added dry leaves I soaked a few times since then. I heard hardwood leaves such as Oak will take longer to breakdown down and that’s the dry leaves I added to this tank and those have been in there for almost a month I would say and are just starting to breakdown. It’s honestly not bad to mix the different types of leaves for some diversity and such. Basically just have to monitor them and when they start looking webbed that they are being eaten away that’s when I add more.

If they have trianglular heads they are typically planaria. But there are many that are just different types of detritus worms. All I can say is do some research if that makes you more comfortable. I have had numerous different types of worms including planaria in my jars that are now in my tanks and my fish and shrimp are fine but you need to do what makes you comfortable.

Also if there is anything that depends on a host to survive will potentially die off in those 30 days. So can you add right away?…sure … but I would advise against it out of precaution.
