Is Unconditioned Wood Causing Bacteria Blooms Within My Aquariums???
I have had a mystery in my fishroom that I hope to solve within this video. I have had cloudy water in 2 tanks, bacteria blooms happen typically in my dirted tanks in the beginning but this one is a little different. Watch and see if I figure it out!

Wow i Just got Mine very small ! I hope that he gets that size congratulations🎉🎉🎉
@@Rclifejp1200 yeah mine was like a small pea puffer when I got him. Now he is a big eating machine. Mine at an adult size is on the smaller size of what they are projected but that’s ok with me 😁
I've had grape wood that I've used in several tanks recently developed a large amount of fungus and algea after a move. I took it out because it was unappealing to look at, and nothing would eat it. I've been using a polishing filter for a week, and I've had to replace the polyfill daily because so much of it came off the wood as i removed it. The other wood in the tank never developed the film. It's interesting, though cause, like i said, I've used those same wood pieces for several years among multiple tanks and never had issues until this tank after i moved.
@@igotboredfkit that is very strange , is there something different in this tank compared to the others that could have attributed to it?
@pattys_aquatics The only thing is I moved, so the water is different, but the substrate and everything else is the same. I moved to a house on well water, but strangly, the other wood didn't have issues that I use in my tanks, just the grapewood. There was non grape wood in the same tank also that didn't fungus up. It's weird, but no biggy. I'll just use other woods in my tanks.
Patty do you heat your tanks individually or heat the entire fish room?
@@sweetpaulie tanks individually. I don’t use heaters in all my tanks though since I have shiners, white clouds and rice fish that don’t require them.
If I were to set my timer at 10am setting on the 10 hour time that means my lights would turn off at 10pm and repeat the same time so on?
@@danielmorales1567 if you set the timer at 10 am for a 10 hour timer it would go off at 8pm every day
Well that was cool Patty! I just got five white cloud minnows a couple days ago from the local PetSmart. So I'll be a while before mine are large wnough to spawn. I may have to re-think their housing though. Yhey'r ein a shallow 41 quart plastic under-the-bed type storaage tray from Target. I forgot your past video when you said they are quite adept jumpers! @@garageaquatics2023 thanks Ron, I have had some success breeding these guys but not as much as I expected. I’m still working with them though but I’m back to keeping them all in a species only tank keeping my eye out for fry. As far as Dave … well my puffer befriended him a while back unfortunately🫣I learned my lesson not to put anything I want to keep with him
Interesting topic once again. Thanks Patty.
@@davidshultz4654 thanks Dave, I appreciate it
Interesting Patty. I collect all of my wood, and don't boil any of it. My measure to tell if it has been dead long enough is if the branch still have leaves attached, leave it. When I have used wood that hasn't been dead long enough, it smelled a little like vomit. Didn't get cloudy water though. A good experiment would be to soak the piece in a 1 part bleach to 100 parts water solution for a couple of days, then soak in clean water for a week. Then see if it still produces a bacterial bloom.
@@Gilsfishroom some great tips Gil and that experiment definitely is something I could try down the road. 😁
how long does it take wood to fully dry out? i mean im sure has to do with thickness and such, but is there like a formula?
@@GCaquatics I know of no formula I usually just look at the how it feels weight wise and how it looks but every piece is unique so it’s hard to say.

@@markfranklin8831 I can absolutely do that Mark 😁👍
So how would you know the wood wasn’t ready and how do you dry it out after you realise and it’s soaked in a aquarium? That cloud looked alive the way it moved Great video patty
@@aquariumdelirium thanks Mal, I personally find it hard to tell if a thick chunk of wood is fully dry in the middle. Weight can’t tell you because different wood is different and as far as drying it out, it will sit in the summer sun all season once that gets here and see again possibly in fall . With this wood I can’t say for 100 percent certainty it was not completely dead in the middle or if it had some sort of bacteria within it I didn’t boil off enough. But it was the wood in my opinion.
You could use one of them 3 inch box filters with filter floss, they’re small, you get some water movement win, win. I have one in my dirted hex and its super clear i tried sponges but it doesn’t seem to really pull debri well over time even when cleaning them once a month

@@kdr1048 that sounds amazing, this is the first piece I have had issues with but I didn’t collect it myself so I can say for sure how old it was or anything. Letting it sit outside for a year I think is the best course of action 😁👍
Hi Patty. Unrelated, but regarding the oxygenation topic, "you need an airstone" and so on... Today I bought an O2 test kit from Salifert (Netherlands). I have a father fish style 9 gallon tank with 8 1-inch fish, shrimp, snails, lots of plants. Nitrates 0. Light is pretty strong, I set it to 50% intensity to control algae, 10-12 hours a day. Anyway, it's been stable like that for half a year. 12 ppm oxygen in mid-level.... Man, I hate that bullshit... I don't need an airstone, don't think hardly anybody with a highy planted tank does. Sorry, maybe I'm just used to noisy pumps and hate them and get pissed off Highly recommend the test kit, or any other, they shouldn't cost more than 15 USD for 50 tests. My mind was rumbling place to place, now it's clear. Any recommendations of tiny algae-eating fish?
@@igorgilza no I hear you, it’s one of those things I feel where it comes down to the preference of the hobbyists much like water changes. I think 100 percent fish can survive and in most cases thrive without an air stone depending on fish and plant stocking levels. I added airstones back in to my tanks only for the reason I feel responsible for the fish and organisms in my tanks and while they appear to be thriving ( and I’m sure they were) I want them to thrive without worry from myself. Yes I could get a test kit, I looked them up there were cheaper ones for $15-$20 like you stated but I had all my O2 supplies yet and said screw it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with how you are feeling about it nor about not adding air. A lot of what we do in this hobby in my opinion is driven by big corporations wanting to make money. In the end we as hobbyists need to do what we feel is best for our inhabitants and ourselves bottom line no matter if that’s using O2 or not, doing water changes or not, dirted tanks or traditional . In the end it’s our hobby and like I said we need to do what we feel is best. Thanks for sharing I truly it. Oh almost forgot, good algae eating fish, you know I’m not sure I have never kept a lot. I personally love snails but that’s just me 😁
I ocassionally use twigs for botanicals and don’t have issues but have never tried a substantial chunk of un seasoned wood. This is very intriguing
@@brantonlightcap thanks Branton, this is the first time I have experienced this with wood. Other pieces I collected I have boiled and had no issues. This one I ran out of propane when trying to boil it and didn’t want to get more so I threw it on my grill. Needless to say it wasn’t good enough 😂
The question remains, was it the condition of the wood, or was it the type of wood that caused the problem? I guess we'll find out late next year, when you're ready to give it another go after further conditioning. :-)
@@ProdigalAquarist very true, it honestly could have been the combination of both to be honest. I did some googling about the wood initially and found it was safe to use in an aquarium but this wood always had a stink to it. I guess time will tell and great point thank you 🙏
Great informative video!
@@LakeMissoulaAquaticsandPlants thank you very much 😁👍
Very interesting. A lot of different thoughts by your cimmentors too which makes for good conversations . The water is now clear. I have put put uncomfotioned wood in my aquariums before... With various results.
@@stubbsaquatics6080 thanks Chris and yes I love to hear people’s takes and a big reason I love UA-cam because I love to learn and increase my knowledge as well ! My water is so much better now. Still a slight haze but it’s to be expected until the bacteria settles down.
Oooo hypothesis! Using them big words! Bacteria blooms or white cloudy water can be caused by multiple things. In essence , it's just an excess of built up nutrients , such as, dead fish, rotting plant matter, phosphates, too much nitrates, ammonia, basically an unbalanced tank.rotting wood cannot cause a bacteria bloom, as driftwood is dead organic matter already. however it can cause fuzz or fungus on the wood, good video buddy
@@TheSalient1 I like to use big words sometimes 😂 Now I have to disagree with you on the fact wood cannot cause bacteria blooms. From my research wood that is not fully “dead” can cause a bacteria bloom whether it’s fresh or partially decomposed because it can leech organic compounds like sugars and tannins into the water column which becomes a food source for bacteria and lead to more bacterial activity in the water column hence the cloudy water bacteria bloom. Since removing the wood from those tanks my water is not 100 percent clear yet but has improved incredibly.
@pattys_aquatics yes in the case of this sure, but why would we want to put partially live wood in our aquariums?
@ we wouldn’t but in cases like mine I wasn’t aware it still was. Or if a hobbyist is collecting their own wood and isn’t aware it’s completely dead and didn’t condition it correctly. There are many possible scenarios where it can happen unintentionally. So I learned something in this situation and wanted to share it
@pattys_aquatics u should not be making these kind of mistakes at your level, if it happens again, I will issues the board of fin and scales to revoke your license as well as your channel and suggest that you do 5 years hard time
@ 😂🤣I won’t go down without a fight… 😁
Side note...During a bloom would be the perfect time to add a daphnia or moina culture, let them deal with it while it's occurring and then the bacteria would be converted to food 😊
Interesting
@stubbsaquatics6080 they filter feed so this would be great for them 😊 I set up afew cultures a couple weeks ago and they are starting to boom now 😊I think I threw a video on here the other day of my greenwater and natural tank systems if you cared to check it out. Really easy to keep going with greenwater and then you have them at the ready incase of blooms... perhaps remove the fish if possible for a couple days then add them back after the little ladies do their thing, fish would have a field day lol great times 😀🙂
@PhoenixRising2040 it's starting a daphnia colony that I have problems with

Thanks Professor Patty. A great science experiment with positive results. 👍🏻🙏
@@mattbrennan647 Professor Patty 😂 I like that. Thank you I just knew something different was potentially happening with these bacteria blooms considering one isn’t dirted.
White Clouds, even the fry, like a bit of current. In my experience, the adults don't actively hunt the fry, but they will gradually eat them, almost inadvertently as they dart at food in the water column. When I see the tiny fry near the top in my well planted White Cloud tank, I'll scoop a few out with a little cup, and put them in a fry tank. Otherwise, after a few days they are gone. (12 adults in a 30 gallon well planted tank. No other fish. A few snails and cherry shrimp.) The fry are so tiny, and under lighting look like they have little headlights. So cool.
@@saabtech3510 thank you for the information, I have a 29 with my species only white clouds, I have never seen fry in it but it is heavily planted and like you said they could have been eaten inadvertently. I recently tried breeding some in a 5 gallon bucket with mesh at the bottom but had no luck. So I have them all back in there species only tank and now I will definitely be keeping a better eye out for fry. Thank you 😁👍
@@pattys_aquatics Hard to spot because they are so tiny. Where I would see them was under floating plants under the light swimming with those little jerk patterns against a slight back current. They would all face the slight current kind of in a loose school. The light reflects off their eye and body, making it look like a pair of blue LED headlights sort of. Like the light comes out of them as the source. Sometimes I had to sit in the chair for ten minutes or so. If they are near the front of the tank I can push a little plastic cup into the water, and the suction created as the water races into the cup catches them along with a bit o duckweed etc. I hope you are able breed and raise some!
@ I have bred them outside of the main tank and got about 15 I have since added to the main tank. I think I’m going to start to pay more attention to that tank now just in case 😁thank you

The jarred life is not being "resurrected," but rather "erected" and thrust forward as we might say, to create more life. There are uncountable millions of organisms in every teaspoon full at all times.
@@brushbros you are not wrong, it’s just a name like I mentioned in the other post you commented on. Thanks for watching
"Resurrection" is a misnomer of course. The collected matter has many millions of microorganisms in every drop; life does not spring spontaneously from inert matter after all. Perhaps "res-Erection" is more accurate because the organisms can easily double in number every hour in favorable conditions. It all adds up. The number of microorganisms you are introducing is on several orders of magnitude greater than those which are visible, even to fish and snails. Those dry oak leaves also have a patina of bacteria/fungi. So do both of us. Nature smart, human-beans dumb. Fascinating video.
@@brushbros yes , it’s not an accurate name factually it’s more visually with the naked eye. Grabbing a handful of dead leaves and soon after visually seeing things swim around so hence rose from the dead . But yes obviously there is so much life amongst it . Thank you

@@NewJerseyTom Thank you very much 🙏
Great that you go into the cons as well mate. Can you quantify that "excess nutrients" you talk about? I would expect a mature tank to have higher nutrient levels than a newly setup one. Am I thinking wrong?
@@greenmachinesweden Thanks Magnus, I don’t think I can quantify the excess nutrients but can explain. When they (dirted tanks) are first set up the soul releases large amounts of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium)and that can lead to imbalances and the plants may not always be established enough to fully absorb all those excess nutrients. Where as a mature tank the plants are established and have root systems that can effectively pull those nutrients from the water column and the soil. The soil also gets less nutrient rich over time as it matures. At least that’s how I understand it
@pattys_aquatics I think it is a pity that the dirted tank comunity do not measure anything. The explanation you give have a logic in it. But it contradicts other explanation models used in aquascaping, the physiology of waterplants and algae, how the osmotic pressure works and my own experience. I really would like to understand why. Too bad I do not have acceptance for more tanks in my home. Do you know anyone that measure dirted tanks?
Wish I had known about the cons of doing this type of tank. I fell in love with all the wonderful things people said about them. Thank you .
@@pamelapapenfuss7330 your welcome, I do believe they are awesome tanks it just sometimes you run into issues and it take a some patience and research to figure it out. I have a lot more pros than cons personally but everyone has their own experiences.

@@codmandchill6714 thank you I appreciate that. I feel like more should be open and honest and we could all learn from it. 😁👍
I use filters on mine. The one that has overkill filtration (10x water turnaround) is much clearer than one that has 3-4x turnarounds. I also have a "control" nanotank with no filtration, those have the haziest water. The odd thing is the control tank actually has the best plant growth and the least algae.
@@lazyremnant380 thanks for sharing and I find that interesting because I found in my tanks which only has biological filtration and at one point had no air rarely had algae and when I added the air stones back in algae had started again in a few tanks. As far as the plant growth my thoughts are it’s the fact CO2 will build up and the plants consume that and bursts their growth compared to a tank that has constant surface agitation releasing the CO2. That’s just my thinking not fact though. Thanks for sharing 😁👍
I always use aquasoil, so basically more expensive dirt :) I'd be good w dirted tanks though, as I pack all my tanks with plants, as you know!
@@LushSaltyAquariums well what you do works tremendously my friend and if you would do dirt you would rock that as well😁👍
Currently have 4 dirted tanks and a full on walstad bowl with shrimp and a peace lilly. The hair algae isnt as bad with the filtered tanks. A deeper cap over your dirt seems to make a difference as well. Floating plants and emersed house plants really help fight the algae for nutrients.
@@Boogs_Aquatics very cool, and some great tips. The power of plants sure can be a game changer can’t they when it comes to excess nutrients and algae😁
I feel like you spend a lot of times listening to metal and staring at your tanks. Been here 5 minutes and i like this channel already.
@@Boogs_Aquatics 😂🤣 Thank you and you wouldn’t be wrong 🤘😁
with uncapped aquasoil you also get from the start very rich with nutrients water, so it's recommended to do water changes first week like 3-4 times big volumes, and if you not going to do it you'll get big algae outbreak too, so idk that cons is only works in comparison with neutral layers like pure sand or gravel
@@halo2something it usually depends on how it set up in regards to a dirted tank. I can say for me if I don’t have fish in there I would let it ride out on its own but if I have fish(which I typically do) I monitor the parameters and changes as needed. But it definitely makes sense to do water changes in the beginning to help control that. Thanks for sharing 😁👍
I guess you could also cut the plant at the base no? That way you dont kick up dirt, i just dont kno if the dead roots in the substrate are detrimental
@@Moteb208 funny you mention that because that’s what I thought of after I pulled it out. I would think the dead roots would eventually breakdown and become nutrients for the plants. Great idea thank you 😁👍

@@pamelapapenfuss7330 yeah disease is not a fun thing. I honestly haven’t battled with much of anything since I started these tanks. How have you been combating it?
@ for the ick, I turned the h at up to 84 for 4 days. Worked like a charm. For fungus I tried salt baths in increasing strength. Didn’t touch it. Picking up a medication and that took care of it. So far the tank that is not fitted is doing fine.
@ I haven’t dealt with diseases in awhile but it sounds like you did the right things 😁👍
You are a genuine and remarkable advocate for this wonderful movement of natural fishkeepping.
@@FatherFish thank you that means a lot and I appreciate it. I just truly feel this style of fish keeping is phenomenal and want to share with others. Now with this video not everyone has or will use your products and I want to show some of the things that could possibly happen in order to encourage those hobbyists not to throw in the towel and know what to expect. Thanks for your support as always 😁👍
I started my first Fathers Fish tank four months ago. I use a sponge filter and never had the cloudy water issue like you showed. The only issue I had initially was diatoms but that resolved pretty quickly. Love your content!
@@lisaholahan2592 thank you and thank you for sharing! I’m thinking it may lie within the soil I use creating the bacteria bloom but who knows. I’m happy to hear yours is coming along nicely 😁👍
Patty coming to be known as "the open minded fishkeeper" 💪
@@AquaticMoose 😂 I like that but I do believe whole heartedly open mindedness is the key to learning and improving our crafts. We all don’t have to do the same thing but we can potentially learn something from each other from it. Best regards from The Open Minded Fishkeeper 😂😁👍
@pattys_aquatics agreed, and those of us who want to listen and learn will continue grow forever! Lifelong learners 🙏
I have run a sponge filter since day one and only had cloudy water the first couple of days. Been crystal clear ever since! The tank has been running almost 2 months with no algae outbreak either.
@@sweetpaulie that’s great to hear, makes me think it probably more has to do with what we put in the soil layer , but I’m no expert 😁. Thanks for sharing 😁👍
@ Full disclosure I have FF substrate covered in pool filter sand with one FF stem plant pack and one FF root plant pack in a 29 gallon tank.
@ well it’s definitely good to know that combination is working. And it’s good to mention that so others can see that as well. I never got his substrate as when I first started mine he didn’t have that out to sell yet and continued with my approach. Which could explain some of my issues and I know there are others that have contacted me that haven’t either and that’s why I think it’s great to share all our experiences cause that can definitely help us be better at this. Thanks for sharing 😁👍
Agreed. Not trying to advertise for any particular products or business. Just wanted to give a detailed and accurate description of my set up.
@@sweetpaulie no I understand it’s just good to hear that those products are doing well for you and could help someone who may not know what route to go. Thank you 🙏
Thank you for the support in watching the video! I as someone who promotes dirted tanks feel it’s important to show my whole journey with them. Now I have seen numerous comments that they have never experienced anything bad with their dirted tanks , and Iam extremely happy to hear that, but the fact is their are so many variables within these aquariums from set up to how they are maintained that issues will arise occasionally. And ITS OK!!!!! In my opinion this whole process with dirted tanks is a journey, it’s a journey to learn from. Because something works for you it doesn’t mean it will work for another. And that’s the point of the video to share my journey and what I experienced so maybe it can help even if it’s one hobbyist. So please keep sharing no matter the experience because we all can learn from each other.
