I was the guitarist in a Ramones tribute band, and the #1 rule of playing a Ramones song is: Downstrokes only! (It helps if you keep your guitar slung low)

Johnny Ramone always played downstrokes only. That's how to make it sound right and get the correct speed.

I LOVE when guitar snobs say things like, "just learn two power chords" or hold up the Ramones as inferior musicians. Then... they try to play it and sound like trash. It's even better when that critic has never written a song that's gotten more than 3 downloads (from mom, grandma, and their bassplayer) on bandcamp.
