  • I've been wanting to do this series for a long time. I was waiting until I could acquire a Mosrite Ventures II copy, but they're hard to come by and I'm tired of waiting.
    I'm going to show you how to play EVERY Ramones song from A-Z.
    But first: you gotta know how to play like Johnny!

    Imo, the hardest part of trying to 'play like Johnny', is getting the bounce in your strumming...especially when palm muting. He would get this scratch-bounce-bounce effect..and it is extremely hard for me to emulate. I have been playing guitar for just about 30 years and it still drives me nuts. Sure, the always downpicking and the Strum, rest, strum 6X is a good place to start. But getting the 'bounce' is the real secret to sounding like him.. Plus there is the whole tone thing too.. hehe. Sure, anyone with any decent level of skill on a guitar can play the notes and chords of any Ramones song. But actually sounding like them is the hard part. Good guitar players know and understand that he was actually a really good player. It is the newbie nerds who dismiss his playing. Thanks for the video.

    Sir absolutely amazing you covered what so many had not within the first 4 minutes. You explained even how he tuned his guitar by what he didn't do and by how he played his guitar. A true teacher you are. This was the 11th video trying to find out how he tuned his instrument and it was for the seasoned musician the first thing you strummed on. Thank you.

    All down strokes. That's punk. The Ramones are the most influential American band period. In terms of their influence. They wrote the blueprint for an entire genre and inspired countless people to start bands. Thanks for doing this video. Everyone plays the Ramones but almost nobody even attempts to do it the right way. Also people playing with a Marshall here are some settings that I think are really close to his.
    Gain on 7, Bass on 4, Contour or Mid at 6, Treble at 7, and if you have reverb, on 2. It sounds dead on to me, if not it's really close.

    3:40: You nailed it. Holding the guitar low makes playing downstroke more easy. That is the reason, why James Hetfield from Metallica holds his guitar so low. It has nothing to do with "looking cool". If you use an appropriate guitar like an flying V oder an Explorer, your playing skills are not affected by holding the guitar low. Due to a more perpendicular position of the fretboard, caused by the retainer oft the guitar belt. Thans for sharing and greetings from Germany. Sorry for the bad grammar...

    Nice job so far! I can't wait to see your Ramones tutorials. You got most of Johnny's technique correct, but you're leaving out one really important detail: he played his A major shape bar chords just like most guitarists - by barring his ring finger across the D, G, and B strings, 2 frets in front of the index finger barre, and taking his middle and 5th finger off the fretboard completely (but you did get the detail that he fretted the low E string correct). Watch any Ramones live show, and you'll see he did a standard A major barre with just his ring finger, but here are some especially good examples: ua-cam.com/video/oXv9okRn1ZQ/v-deo.html , guitaridiot.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Johnny-Ramone2.jpg , prntscr.com/j519ml
    As for your uncertainty as to how he fretted his open E chords, it differed from song to song. For songs like California Sun, he played it with his middle, ring, and index fingers, so he could easily switch to the open A chord (ua-cam.com/video/1Z9iUdiS3hI/v-deo.html). As for songs like the verse of Today Your Love, Tomorrow The World, he played it with his 5th, ring, and middle fingers so he could transition from the G major barre chord easily (ua-cam.com/video/JIOqpWPPzsg/v-deo.html).
    Johnny used his own custom made picks, and from what I've heard, they're relatively thick. You can find many of them on eBay or Amazon, since Johnny dropped a lot of them on stage.

    • @AmiltonJr99
      @AmiltonJr99 5 років тому

      it looks like Johnny didn't play the A string in the E major chord, only using the fingers 1 and 3 and muting A string

    • @alanhigham8834
      @alanhigham8834 3 роки тому

      @@AmiltonJr99 I think he did use just two fingers to hold the open E chord and I always felt he used one finger to hold the A and D string as he had very large fingers.

      There are replicas currently in production by a company called Eastwood. They nail the look, but I've heard they're not great.
      If you're just after Johnny's sound, get a Dimarzio Fs-1 pickup, stick it in a solid body and that'll do ya. Pickups make up the vast majority of a guitar's sound.
