Just a suggestion. Try putting your target 1/3 to the left or to the right of your scene, and fly straight. The drone will start turning, trying to keep your subject in focus, and when it gets 180 degrees, move the stick backwards, to fly away from the other side.
Excellent observation, I wonder how many know cruise control works in yaw (sideways)? While doing that, you can raise height, play with the gimbal wheel, and give your shot that little bit extra. 👍🏻

You could have also set your cruise control and it would have stayed locked on the target more accurately.
Cruise also works on Yaw as well 👍
