Hi Darren. Is the AIR 3S LUTs on special too?
@@RichardKeysMedia yes!
Great vid! I lost my first brand new mini pro 4 due to tip #7 and 8. I did not let the home point update, before flying over water. When it did update, it was already over the water. Tip #8, I let the battery get to critical, so when it returned to home. The home point over the water. Because the battery was to critical, it wouldn't let me override the RTH. I was basically 80 feet away, watching my drone go into the ocean and it wasn't a damn thing I could do about it. An expensive lesson learned! Thank you so much for teaching people about what not to do. I wish this vid was out a few years ago! 😁
Thanks for this! I believe the best drone shots are captured over water near the shore. This setting provides a unique opportunity to create stunning content, with dynamic visuals like waves, reflections, and coastal landscapes adding depth and intrigue to your shots.
Totally agree!
pretty vital information, thanks
Great post Darren!
I fly my drones off my little dinghies all the time and the advice about the home point not being of much use is a good one. I would also add that whilst the wind might be fine for the drone to fly, be careful if you are landing it on a boat as even a little wind can be a nightmare to land, especially on a moving boat. Hand landing is often not good enough, so I grab hold of them and then shut the rotors off, at least I kniow I have the drone!
If in doubt then I just land the drone on land and go fetch it.
Thanks! Quite informative.
Thank you very much ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I flew my M4Pro 3 miles out to sea at cannon beach in Oregon 😂 I'm a beginner and it was like my 4th time flying it. I made it back! I also have a propensity to push the limits. Not a good combo. But it was sick! I was so worried the whole time
as a new Mavic 3 pro flyer, thank you for the valuable information.
I’m just getting a hang of flying my drone and it takes some beautiful footage!
Also thanks for the editing tips!
One of my first flights with my first drone (DJI Air 3s) was all over water. I wound up pushing it to the point where the drone automatically flew home due to low battery. Thankfully, it landed safely with about 5 minutes to spare. Simply amazing drone.
That's cutting it too fine re:battery.
It has 45min. You should be landing at 15%+.
Better for your battery.
3 batteries suggest you could easily be landing at 33%.
@@matt79hz I agree with you.
All good advice. I’ve been flying over water on the Oregon coast for years now. Most recently with a DJI Mini 3 Pro, and soon with a Mini 4 Pro and an Air 3S as well. Altitude is your friend with any kind of long range flying flying over coastal waters does involve long range flying; getting set up for the shot or for the video scene usually involves getting out over the water and flying back towards the coast/bay/dock/boats, whatever it is that will make your shot special. I always set my RTH altitude at 110 meters, and I don’t fly from a boat, only the coast. I’m sure I will fly from a boat someday, but I haven’t felt the need so far because most of my photo/video is in support of landscape images, rather than action shots. The most important piece of advice here is the most obvious: trust the technology. You paid big money for this fancy little gizmo, presumably because you wanted all of the safety and device security built into it. It might as well not be there if you can’t (won’t) trust that it will work for you. I would urge a lot of extra caution when flying right over the water. It takes some experience to make accurate estimates of the actual height that the drone is flying. You can end up in the “drink” if you aren’t at least a little mindful of your altitude when you fly and also skeptical about the altitude number that the drone is displaying. With all that said, I’ve gotten some great results and great shots flying over water. Don’t be afraid of it; just do it, be careful, and enjoy the process and the results. Peace
OH yeah 👍👍👍 my DJI mini 3 flymore combo arrived today! Yes, I'm surfing for more input, or insight, maybe courage for the initial flight. Knowing some key points for getting OUT of trouble before hand just makes sense. Remove the panic. Batteries are charging and while taking notes. Growing up IS optional. Beats the hell out of Lincoln logs!!
Good advice, i do a lot of flights over water and in the 6 years flying DJI drones never had a problem do as you say and the drone will come home be sill and take chances then on your head be it, great advice as always.👍👍👍
Hi Darren 👋😀.
Very helpful and important video 👍💯. It can make All the difference in keeping your drone safe and feel confident in flying over water.
Happy Holidays to you and your family 🙏. Have a great week and God bless you and your family always 🙏
Thank you ! It’s sure is, things can go wrong but I really hope this helps ! Thank you for the continued support
Thank you for this video. Point No. 7 is a must! I was flying out over water this past Saturday and totally forgot to let it set the home point. When I hit return to home the drone was almost landing on the ocean. I was able to cancel quickly and move the drone to me. Very scary.
Thanks for good advice 👍👍
Thanks for this video....everything you say makes sense. I should have watched this before I lost my Neo that flew away when it lost connection from my RC2, crashing into the lake. I think my mistake was just turning on my drone and flying it immediately without enough satellite GPS signals (your tip #7). Luckily I bought the DJI insurance and gotta replacement within days.
Again great advice all I need to do is actually buy a mini 4 pro thanks bro 👊🏾
Haha next step!
I have just received my cheat sheet. It is a great asset to have with me. Especially being a beginner flying drones. Thank you .
@@chiefus3536 awesome thank you so much
I want to try Luminar Neo!
Do it!
@@DMProductions👍🏼
@DMProductions I've said this commenting on someone else's UA-cam video about flying drones over water: "How do you fly your drone over water? VERY carefully" LOL
Great tips on flying over water!! I don't fly much over water, and don't expect to, but when I do I would keep my drone close to shore. Great advice on going out farther first, when the battery is at full capacity. The little flying I've done was over ponds for test flights, so this advice is very handy. Thanks as always, Darren!!!!
Learned for the first time to wait until RTH point has been established.
I use the autopilot app. When I fly in the wind I always get that warning telling me to fly lower. Where DJI say do not fly the Drone less than 5 m over water. So I took the Drone down to the local park which has a huge pond. And I was able to fly around and get some of the most amazing shots just staying at about 5.5 m in altitude. I feel like you shouldn't be so low to the water because of the facts of anything could jump out of the water and damage your drones, and cause you to lose your drone. That's my fear of ocean water. I absolutely be checking on how far a dolphin can jump out of the water and how far can a whale come up out of the water. I am in you one of those cautious DJI drone pilots.
The "wind" comment is especially pertinent when over water. I live lakeside. More to the point, wind is much stronger at altitude. Be cognizant of this when you set your RTH altitude. In fact, I forgot about that today where I had to RTH manually at a lower altitude as I was using my NEO instead of my Air 3S.
i use the mavic pro og and live in hawaii. i fly mine out 5 or 6 miles all the time. No problems.
Great video! You have inspired me to be a little more brave when flying over water. Downloaded the code for Luminar Neo. Thanks for that! Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much! Hope these tips help you out
You can also set RTH to come back to the controller when you are moving in your boat on the water!
you have to update the home point manually and set it to controller
Maybe it’s good idea for next video? :)
I've always flown my drones over water every drone since the dji spark
I flew my first drone in the UAE in 2005. I've flown over water countless times and the only drone I've ever lost was over land about 6 years ago. I travel a. lot and taught myself how to fly in hotel rooms. One time a I had a balcony and thought it would be cool to fly from the room, go outside and fly around and then return. Inside the drone uses barometric pressure (I think) to determine it's altitude when GPS isn't available. Once my drone got away from the hotel and saw GPS, it flew away.
Ooo this looks good
Thanks Darren, I love to keep on learning and these videos definitely continue to teach me. Love to see places I recognise too. Bean Point on Anna Maria Island! What a great place to film.
Oh yes what a place! Cannot wait to return
Nice tutorial! I have been flying a lot over the ocean, seas, lakes, glaciers. And perhaps, the most dangerous I've met was - the gulls! Need to be the very careful, especially during the breeding season, when birds are very aggressive. Also, when flying over the ocean, need to mind the waves height.
Absolutely seagulls esp with the Mini drones can be a problem!
@@DMProductions The best way to fly from seagulls is to take the drone up. Seagull will never follow it up, because they fly on certain height. And then safely return it over to the ground and land. Once I was trying to take some manuers with seagulls and it almost costed me a drone.
Ha ha :) it happened to me so many times in Portugal.
Lost my first drone to a hawk about six years ago >_< it picked it off mid air while I was flying over a frozen river. Not a fun day. Also have almost lost drones to fish flying low over water near sunset, the landing light on the bottom apparently looks tasty to hungry bass, they'll jump right up and try to eat it.
@@who2999 Wow, I would never think, that fish could jump on the drone. I have been flying frequently low above the lake with plenty of fish, including bass. I'm glad nobody took it :)
Awesome video !
Nice🎉Thank You
Excellent video, than you for sharing your expertise on this. 👍
My pleasure!
I praise the excellent video; I have experienced it myself, and it is absolutely true. When strong winds blow, it is crucial to stay calm and act wisely, just as demonstrated in this video.
I’m curious if there will be an update to the DJI Fly app with the auto-update home point feature that was available in DJI Go 4 on the Mavic Air, especially for situations when flying a drone from a motorboat.
Thanks my man, I’m in Hawaii and I needed this
Definitely hover in-place is safest if you lose signal over water....however, I'd also say anything other than retuning to home point is still a decent choice. I've had very few situations where I've lost both video and control link. Usually the video drops first giving you plenty of wiggle room, so I'd say setting it to return to controller wouldn't be unreasonable.
Great video! Only thing that scares me is you didn't mention that putting it in sports mode shuts off all collision detection, so you have to be super careful in that mode.
True but without doing that in the example I mentioned you would loose your drone anyway
hi there i use airdata uav and my 45 years flying fixed wing rc happy flying
UAV forecast doesn't seem to have a free option any more. To see any kind of conditions, current or forecast, it looks like you have to subscribe to it. Do you have any other suggestions, or am I just using this wrong?!
Great tips! Thanks so much. 😉☺️
You are so welcome!
Great video very informative. I noticed the UAV forecast app is not free anymore. Can you confirm this from your end?
How to fly over water….fly drone over water. The end. 😂😜
Nice one. Realy informative video, thanks.
Thank you so much
Very informative and helpful plus the scenarios are realistic !
I do have one question though re when you are on the water with the boat moving.
Are you suggesting that in this case, set the RTH to hover and then go an retrieve your drone ?
Thanks for the video, very educational. UAV Forecast is not free anymore these days.
UAV Forecast now charge subscription I use AirData UAV.
Can I ask a completely different question regarding the maps on the RCW controller how do I get them to display so the drone is shown on the map. When I had my mini 3 on the RC Controller they were there no mater where I flew and no need for mobile data/ hotspot requirement. I have downloaded the UK Map will this now work by using the maps offline without the need to have mobile data/hotspot say on my mobile.
UAV Forecast completely free? I think not! It used to be be for current and very near term conditions, but now all it displays is a "preview" that's not for the current location, along with a "subscribe" link. OK it's only £6.50/year for the lowest tier, but it's not free any more.
I was going to say the same 👍
Me too! But I think it's definitely worth it, I don't want to lose my drone if it gets caught up in high altitude winds.
There is another free app called "Drone weather" on Android, not sure if it's on iOS too
Air Data UAV is a great app for weather as well.
Dronecast is free and better
Thank you for your detailed, clear explanation! This video also contains a lot of good advice that I will certainly apply and test! There is one thing I cannot manage and that is that the drone (DJIM4P) follows my kayak on the water, the drone indicates that it does not recognize me. Do you have an answer or solution for this?
Thank you so much for posting a video regarding over water flight. I have a new mini 4 and I plan on using it a lot over water as well as this summer while wake surfing behind our boat. I have seen other videos with recommendations for over water settings. They have recommended turning the obstacle avoidance off when flying at a low altitude. I would love to use the tracking feature when I have someone driving the boat and I am behind surfing. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you for all of your advice and videos.
Am gonna buy luminar neo looks perfect for what I need without. 60 pound a month Adobe subscription any suggestions for video efotmg bought a dji micro 4 pro today gonna take it out tomorrow for first flight and I've spent days learning in UA-cam haha. Any suggestions for video app that's like luminar but nit super expensive or is the dji recommended app good enough
you can use davinci resolve for free and its one of the best
@DMProductions thankyou and oh my god just took the drone out tonight for the first time was a bit apprehensive as it was pitch black so went the docs and played with it for half hour couldn't wait till day light and wow it's incredible so easy to fly too, was nervous when realised obstacle avoidance is off at night so decided to fly higher than lampposts and over the water to get photos of spinnaker tower ports mouth and dam it was amazing spent days and days researching so new everything a out it on basics apart from using it haha. Thanks mate and I purchased luminar with your code gonna try edit images in a min. Did forget to buy ad card so never got much footage
Great video and great tips.
For hand landing the MP4, do I need to disable anything? I got the hand takeoff, though I have trouble getting it to land in my hand.
I will get the drone near by, switch to cine, turn sensors off and then land on my hand
@@DMProductions sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you.
What a great video, love the Simpson bit haha
Glad you enjoyed it hahah
I regularly do 2km each way out to an island and i get one circle around the island before im under 50% and its always sketch if the wind changes, or is greater when far off the coast, ill do this at about 5m, haven't lost it yet
My dad has a house on the lake, and the only problem I have is his Purple Martin's attacking it 😂
Lost mine over Hawaii two weeks ago. *PTSD* maximum! That was *REAL* SHOCK AND AWE. Fortunately, Amazon has a replacement aircraft only! (no RC, batteries, or cables) Im waiting on it now. 599.00... considered stepping up to the Air6E, but would need a remote ID, and in Hawaii, theres a friggin air station everywhere.
hi, what about Videos, what program do you use to edit the videos you take? cheers Ian
Great video as always. What are your thoughts about holding drone body and release to hand launch and taking hold of it as it lands in your hand (in sport mode so sensors are off)? There seem to be mixed views on hand launch and landing, I think you need a super steady hand to use palm; and prevent it wobbling I guess either way the key is keeping well clear of those props!
Sure but i wouldn’t take off or land in sports I would rather land in cine and switch the sensors off
@ ah okay, thanks for that 👍🏼
Do you palm land in auto / rth mode or manually? Thanks! 😊 @@DMProductions
Was at Capri in July and had the Mini 4 Pro out over the sea capturing some footage of the 3 famous rocks, The Faraglioni, and had a disconnect with about 50% battery, i had the drone set to return to the home point and also pressed the RTH button but it never returned, last location i could see was over the water, I sent the log files to DJI and they couldn't work out what happened but they replaced the drone thankfully even though I didn't have Care refresh. Not a great end to the holiday.
The sucks dude you were sad right? On the way home
@vinnies8in Yeah, 2nd last day, fortunately I was downloading the footage at the end of each day onto my MacBook so I only lost the 4K footage from that day but had the cache files on my phone, was unfortunate but within a week DJI replaced it so props to them, still none the wiser as to what happened though but it hasn't put me off flying over water, just put it down to experience.
I notice you were 6.7 M above the above the water when you crashed your drone..it instantly went to 4.6m...but still not 0 when it crashed into the water...I had exactly the same situation over water on Christmas morning..brand new mini 4 pro 1st major flight...gone...and I've been flying them for getting on 15 years now. I have DJI refresh...but thee is no way I am forking out £200+ for a flyaway....any recommendations before I charge my credit card back
To fix the water problem i think it would be best to buy a swellPro drone it is waterproff something DJI should look into. I here that DJI is the best drones in the world and a leader ? I question that when they don't make a waterproof drome. I race boats and trying to get great video i need to pay someone to fly over me with a helicopter and use a video camera :( cost is crazy but better than trying to use a DJI non waterproof drone and lose a few thousand bucks. Anyway thanks for an awesome video great information on the DJI drones.
UAV Forecast hasn't been free for a few weeks now.
I purchased the lifetime edition of Luminar Neo. A one-year subscription to Photoshop costs $300! Luminar has the tools I need to edit my drone shots so I can share them quickly.
Yes such good value esp with the current offer
Got to pay for UAV Forecast now (no longer free)
I wish there were "Return to Remote" option to return the drone to location of the pilot and remote.
Can you use your downloadable LUTS on the Luminar Neo program???
Yes ☺️☺️
Ha, I chased a cruise ship on my first ever flight with the 4 Pro. It was about a kilometer away from takeoff ON SHORE. Why anyone would fly FROM a moving boat is beyond me.
I'd just put a fresh battery in. Just know what your battery situation is. If it takes 40% getting out there, then make sure you're back by 20% at the least.
Not only Dji drones perform well over the water. My Fimi Mini 3 shot awesome videos and no issues at all! Why always and only Dji has to be good at doing everything? I don't understand. More than this, when I use my boat, with the Fimi I have the variable RTH point, so it can land wherever I am at the moment. This is impossible with my DJI.
UAV Forecast is not free anymore... I switched to AirData UAV which is free at time of typing
Don’t agree at all about, “it’s my fault.” I had two crashed with two different brand drones and both times my fingers were not on the sticks-I attempted to hover by letting go. The drones had a life of their own. Possibly interference? Or drone programming?
UAV forecast is not free anymore sadly to get the proper readings
correct as I was using this too, do you know any another app ?
@@CM-1986 keep using it it’s only £5 per year
I used today Dec 03 - 2024
Free, maybe I'm in USA! (I don't know tomorrow)
Just wanted to leave a comment here. As somebody who has flown their drone over bodies of water numerous numerous times. Please go back to physics class for a minute and never launch your drone from a moving boat or any floating device while moving. Furthermore if you take off on a dock, let’s say and try to land it on the boat or on a kayak or on a canoe, just know that you will be moving and if you have no choice but the land that drone in your hand, it’s going to be freaking hard. I’ve done it several times, but boy was it risky.
Great video but UAV is no longer free.
Should’ve watched your video last week. RIP drone
All good tips but why the limited title: DJI Mini Mini 4 pro? Those tips are valid for most DJI drones, and others too!
Flying low above water... Look at my lilies videos. Some recorded at 2 feet altitude.
100% the worst part of flying over water isn’t taking off…but landing the drone on a boat with wind, waves and movement. Or when in a creek…one bad hand catch and BOOM….its in the water!!
Important note: On Mini 4 Pro set RTH to Preset NOT Optimal, as shown at 6:24
Optimal will stay at same altitude and RTH. Preset will rise to preset RTH altitude and RTH.
Sure my mistake
Uav is NOT free.
Drone weather is. Just about the same.
I work as a software engineer, i been trained to never trust technology XD
Be very careful flying your drone a very low altitude.. If it has Optical Sensor the worst that it could happen is if it looses its lock on when the sensor could not detect ground because of Water that happens to be transparent and making the ground look like far.. It will not use GPS on Low Altitude so you are prone from drifting your drone because it has no lock on. Only the drone with no Optical Sensor can fly over water in low altitude that is why old drones are good on this kind of low altitude flight because it uses GPS mode simultaneously even in low altitude.
As you know, I live beside a large boating lake and fly over it most of the time. I love flying with the swans and geese. I’ve even landed on it when frozen ❤good to here another great video ❤
Dji Mini 5pro release date please you are trust person
Theres 0 leaks or rumors. I don't think they can really add more and keep it sub 250. Maybe a slightly better camera?
Zero
Good tips! 😃
* flying too far. @2:00. 😅
Thank you for this videos. I am in the process of buying a drone and I really enjoy watching your videos
"Flying too far"*
Flown mine over 2000km and 99% is over the ocean😬
Why pay for software 🤔 pointless
UAV Forecast IS NOT FREE anymore!
Uav forecast, like gavinhr said, putting in your own settings is like marking your own maths exam 😊 pointless and useless. Better off using Airdata uav 😊
You the best

Get the +battery. Registering a drone is child's play. I don't get the whole not wanting to register BS. I completed my registration online in less than 30minutes. Get real. It's much better to not have battery anxiety rule so much of your decisions.
@dmproduction very helpful information thanks a lot, by the way I have a Mini 4 pro but I been thinking in a 2 drone but I need some help to get the right one with one do you recommend me as a second drone option between Dji Air 3S and Dji avata 2 with the google 3 thanks
Thank you for all the tips. Adding a Mini Pro 4 and Neo to my YT channel so this really helps! @littleblueskiff
