Fuel Tank, Wheel Wells, Battery Rack - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.13
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 вер 2024
- In this video I'm fabricating a battery box rack so I can use the original (yet modified) plastic battery box to house the battery behind the driver's seat. Why there you may ask... It is due to weight distribution since the engine is located on the passenger side (on the left) and all the weight put on the driver's side will help to balance the vehicle out in addition to my own 100 kg / 220 lbs body weight. I'm also making the wheel wells / mud guards for the rear of the UTV so I'm not getting plastered with mud in the future. Everything has to be compact and roomy at the same time. I don't like to feel cramped when working or maintaining a vehicle. This build will let me do things to my own liking. Now some of you will probably say I'm mad for doing this but I've decided to put the fuel tank near / almost on top of the battery. Well, not really, but they're really close. It's like sitting on a firecracker if for some reason the homemade tank starts to leak for example and the battery is short circuiting at the same time. But no worries! I have a solution for that which I will reveal in a future video. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

or at least aluminum and stainless !!
You should buy a plasma cutter

Hello friends. let us be grateful to our friend who posted this video sharing knowledge. It doesn't cost anything to like and make a simple comment. It is the least we can do in gratitude for his work. thank you!
Thanks for posting Donn 👍
I know you are your own project planner, camera man, video editor and a amazing fabricator. I know how much work that is so thank you very much for your hard work 👍
We both don’t have the luxury of a camera man/editor, it sure would be nice but I don’t think I will find a camera guy that likes staying up till 1AM on the weekends 😂
Take care Donn 🙂
I found both your channels on the same day, I think maybe about 8 months ago or so. Would be cool to see some kind of collab between you two!
Now who will have their UTV finished first :)
Loving your forward control ATV series by the way.
I had the idea a while back to do similar with making a forward control Suzuki Jimny. I'm just waiting for the right (cheap) donor to come along.
...Ultimate goal will be to add some kind of lightweight, cobbled together hookloader system so I can swap between flatbed, log carrier, water bowser, people carrier, tool carrier, etc. Then have different bodies I can hook up depending on what I'm doing that day.
Thanks for watching bro! Merry Christmas!💪
Mike an Donn. Two of my favorites who inspire me to do more.
My Day went terrible today. And you upload a video. Thank you! Youmade my Day better!
Always a pleasure to watch a highly skilled craftsman at work.
You know he probably forgot more than we will ever know about fabrication lol
Прекрасная работа. Ещё бы по чаще выходили ролики. Молодец.
Теперь я начинаю понимать сколько терпения и времени нужно для монтажа видео.охват мировой.искренне поддерживаю твой быт.👍✌
What most people don't realize is that Donn does not use speeded up video - that's how fast he really works! 😁
Which means every time he slows down to what we think of as Real Time, it just means he needs another coffee since he has too much blood in his caffeine system...
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
Everything is built to last forever! Always amaze me how capable you are. Well done 👍
Чем ближе к завершению , тем ещё интереснее становиться ! 👍🚙
I get a real kick out of how you over build so that you can add gussets for strength and rigid shapes. I sure wish I lived where I could just bop in and really be a part of it... marvelous work
absolute madness! what this man is doing is really art! I am really stunned! keep it up ! Merry Christmas! stay healthy ! May God protect you and your family !! 👍👍👍👋👋👋🤝🤝🤝🇩🇪
excellent use of CAD - Cardboard Aided Design. :)
The long awaited time has come! Donn posted a new vid!
The build is really coming together! Thanks very much for sharing your project! Really enjoyed 👍 👍
"Fuel tank from scratch"...scratch is some amazing material. I guess you can make anything from it.
Donn, your work is truly impeccable, I've done similar
work for 45 years, but are learning something new
from you all the time.
You're awesome, THANKS ! ! !

Go out to that old Peugeot, cut the fuel filler neck and cap off of it and weld it to the top of the tank. Keep it simple. Thanks for the videos. Jon (Vanya)
It's plastic on the Peugeot fuel tank if I recall correctly.
Otro muy buen capitulo en la construccion de este 4x4, esta vez es la elaboracion del Tanque de combustible, huecos para ruedas, portabaterías, quedando estupendas estas piezas, mis respetos y saludos desde Venezuela.👍👍👊👊
Great work really enjoy watching the progress

Another fantastic video !
Lol I've heard of butt joints before ..... Butt bending metal straps for fuel tanks is a new one!!!
It's all looking prettty goood.
Cheers from Sydney Australia as usual..🇦🇺🦘🐨🇦🇺
Parabéns vejo que é muito esperto e perfeccionista, aqui na minha região as pessoas não são assim, percebi que deixou as chapas de uma maneira que quando for dado o acabamento não será retirado todo o material de soldagem. realmente qualidade..
As everybody say, when your weekly vidéo is there, then the best day of the week is there !!!
I've done videos every two weeks lately so they're not weekly. But I'll try do more. 😀
Safety first !!! No engine or drive train but must have seat belts ,, lol,, I hope he has a plan lol , thumbs up
Damn I love watching these videos!!! You are a master! I wish I had a shop like yours.
The workshop is homemade. You can do it too. 💪💪💪
Good day Sir😊 Great and innovative way Sir of building your Super ATV 👌😊👍
Всегда класс!!👍👍👍
You could just get a piece of pipe that fits over both drive shafts and use it like a collar. It's the same thing you were planning to do with the hollow shaft, only the collar would be free floating and have to be welded on both ends instead of just one.

King man, just king! What happened to your plasma cutter? A tip from Swe Donn wannabe: Add a drain tap to esely get rith of crap in yor tank, thankful that my boat has it. Keep up the good work mate.
Plasma is hooked up to the CNC and the CNC stil needs some work. I will add all the necessary inlets and outlets once I've figured out what pump I'm using and where everything is located on the frame. Drain is one thing I too want to have on that tank. I agree with you. 💪
7:10 Ah, good old CAD...
Cardboard Aided Design...
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
Very tidy work, as always, Donn! A small suggestion: If possible, see about getting a 2nd drill (you seem to change to the de-burring bit quite often), it'll save quite a bit of time!
You make 2020 better!!! 👍🏻
Great video. I’m ready to go out and make my own gas tank!
Мужик толант.малорик.всегда интересно смотреть
I'm sure the CV joints on the half shafts will come off. Then, you can swap the new ones over to the hollow shafts
Super ja hea töö nagu ikka 👍👊
Great video as always but, one little point when making fuel tanks, don't forget to put a hole in the top as well as the bottom of any baffles in the tank, or you will get airlocks and won't be able to fill the tank.
Watch the video again. This time with your eyes open
Good Job 👍
Thank you!
Bro you have mad fab skills!...RESPECT!
Cheers man!
Another great engineering and fabrication video! Great job Donn! Regards, Solomon

Great work
Nice work 👍
Merry Christmas!:)
Merry Christmas!
If you haven't already thought about it. The fuel filler pipe is better off going into the tank about half way down or more (to low will stir up any gunk in the tank) as long as you have an adequate sized vent line from the top of the tank. Will make it way easier to fill up. If the fill pipe is too flat you will only be able to dribble fuel in.
nice... worth the wait..
Cheers man!
awesome work!
Looks great
Very nice what you're doing.
Керемет! Жарайсың
I really like you work, it's a pleasure to watch...
22:06 Je! Saludos desde Argentina!
Why do you need hollow drive shafts? Just use a thick steel pipe and do like 40 plug welds on both sides.
When the shafts are different in size put a pipe on the smaller one, plug weld it and turn it to the right diameter to fit into the pipe.
Dude you got some talent for sure keep u God work. I'm digging it.
Very nice work... Really appreciate 😍👍... So creative
Maybe put the filler on top? And be careful welding driveshafts..
Can you put elbows on the gas fill pipe ? That may give you some better options... Nice job 👍
Es todo un genio, yo me preguntó venderá todos esos inventos que hace ??
Your job is always perfect 👍👏
Just found your channel,, I see why you have over half a million subs.
Great video. 👌👍👌👍
I'm sure you will use it in the snow, right? Add some sturdy metal at the top of the wheels as deflectors which pushes any snow on them outwards, leaving just a minimal clearance. It needs to move up and down with the wheels of course and be adjustable to function properly :)
You ain't afraid to think outside the box, that's for certain.
You are a creative man. I wish you good luck
Thank you very much for the good wishes.
Vägev ja tugev värk..Nii nagu peab. Soovitan rellakaga töötamisel vibrokindaid kasutada..
Hi Donn beautiful job well done I like it thank
The drive shafts off of a 306 should be the same as the partner on the hub end across the entire engine range if you just need that side... Might be worth having a look at a scrap yard for one with hollow shafts
Tá ficando muito bom. Gosto muito quando chegam às notificações dos seus vídeos... BRASIL !
I agree with other viewer cap on top with long tube in case of deep water lol And also top off gas tank😊
Very creative I love to watch
happy in 2021!!
I really thought the new plasma table was going to play a big role in this build. But keep up the nice work.
you could use some peugeot 206,306 and citroens driveshafts, they are all hollov
For the driveshafts try NEAPCO they are a drive line supply company they sell hollow tubes and the yoke ends. Hope it helps also it's looking good. Why not havve the fill port come through the top of the tank?
Wow , you have plenty of time, i'm a bit gealous 😁😁
Hi Donnie.
How about your next project to make an excavator?
Are you capable of such a task?

Great video!! Awlsum job on the fuel tank things are really coming together nice thanx much
Thanks for watching.
В России вообще бы не вспомнили про ремень безопасности 😀
Why not make wheel wells out of 8mm PE plastic? Should be "easy" enough to rivet them in place?
Why don't you do that and post your own video of it?
@@rd-ch1on whats with the attitude? I like the stuff Donn does, did I say anything bad about the way he does things?
The wheel wells act as diagonals as well and makes the frame more rigid. I'm not worried about the weight, it is essentially a tractor not a fast speedy buggy. 😉
Good jop !
Brother you are amazing with all the machines you have built and are building now. Do you still have that atv with the tracks on it? That was another amazing machine you built from the ground up. Love your content your friend from Larned kansas Eric Houser, p.s. besafe brother.
Thanks 👍👍👍
عمل رائع شكرا لك اخي
Incredible job as usual!!
But ... the floor and the wheel arches are made of what, 2-3mm steel? It protect from an explosion of a hand-held grenade :-) isn’t it an overkill?
