Fuel Tank, Wheel Wells, Battery Rack - 4x4 Off-Road UTV Build Ep.13

  • In this video I'm fabricating a battery box rack so I can use the original (yet modified) plastic battery box to house the battery behind the driver's seat. Why there you may ask... It is due to weight distribution since the engine is located on the passenger side (on the left) and all the weight put on the driver's side will help to balance the vehicle out in addition to my own 100 kg / 220 lbs body weight. I'm also making the wheel wells / mud guards for the rear of the UTV so I'm not getting plastered with mud in the future. Everything has to be compact and roomy at the same time. I don't like to feel cramped when working or maintaining a vehicle. This build will let me do things to my own liking. Now some of you will probably say I'm mad for doing this but I've decided to put the fuel tank near / almost on top of the battery. Well, not really, but they're really close. It's like sitting on a firecracker if for some reason the homemade tank starts to leak for example and the battery is short circuiting at the same time. But no worries! I have a solution for that which I will reveal in a future video. Stay tuned and thanks for watching!
This is part of a series of a four wheel drive utility vehicle build to lessen the work load on my trusty 2002 Honda Foreman Rubicon TRX500FA. This partially answers the question "Why?" but for those who want to ask "why don't you just buy a side-by-side instead of building one?" I just want to say - I'm not made of money. Side-by-sides are ridiculously expensive, even the car I drive around daily is worth less (not worthless though!), hell, it is even worth less than my 2002 Honda ATV.
"How much HP will it have?" - the 1.4 litre FWD petrol engine I'm planning on using has 55 kw and this will not change, but the torque will be tripled via the BMW differentials I'm using to transfer power to front and rear axles.
"It will be too heavy!" - this project just like the firewood processor project does not have to float. And a heavier vehicle will handle better anyway when hauling heavy loads.
Stay tuned for future episodes! Thanks for watching!

I know you are your own project planner, camera man, video editor and a amazing fabricator. I know how much work that is so thank you very much for your hard work 👍
We both don’t have the luxury of a camera man/editor, it sure would be nice but I don’t think I will find a camera guy that likes staying up till 1AM on the weekends 😂
    Take care Donn 🙂

Now who will have their UTV finished first :)
Loving your forward control ATV series by the way.
I had the idea a while back to do similar with making a forward control Suzuki Jimny. I'm just waiting for the right (cheap) donor to come along.
...Ultimate goal will be to add some kind of lightweight, cobbled together hookloader system so I can swap between flatbed, log carrier, water bowser, people carrier, tool carrier, etc. Then have different bodies I can hook up depending on what I'm doing that day.

You could just get a piece of pipe that fits over both drive shafts and use it like a collar. It's the same thing you were planning to do with the hollow shaft, only the collar would be free floating and have to be welded on both ends instead of just one.

Plasma is hooked up to the CNC and the CNC stil needs some work. I will add all the necessary inlets and outlets once I've figured out what pump I'm using and where everything is located on the frame. Drain is one thing I too want to have on that tank. I agree with you. 💪

If you haven't already thought about it. The fuel filler pipe is better off going into the tank about half way down or more (to low will stir up any gunk in the tank) as long as you have an adequate sized vent line from the top of the tank. Will make it way easier to fill up. If the fill pipe is too flat you will only be able to dribble fuel in.

Why do you need hollow drive shafts? Just use a thick steel pipe and do like 40 plug welds on both sides.
When the shafts are different in size put a pipe on the smaller one, plug weld it and turn it to the right diameter to fit into the pipe.

I'm sure you will use it in the snow, right? Add some sturdy metal at the top of the wheels as deflectors which pushes any snow on them outwards, leaving just a minimal clearance. It needs to move up and down with the wheels of course and be adjustable to function properly :)
