There is one recording of his that reached the top 40 called "King Heroin", which is a spoken word recording. It would be something unusual and different for you to cover.

I was fortunate enough to have spent a good bit of my childhood in Augusta, GA & therefore, was introduced to Mr. Brown at a young age. If you want some slow songs by Brother James, I would suggest "It's a Man's, Man's Man's World", "Oh Baby Don't You Weep", "Please, Please, Please", "Down & Out in New York", "Try Me", "Bewildered" & his cover of "Georgia on my Mind".

My favorite James Brown song is "My Ding-a-Ling" the live version of that song is amazing with the crowd. It's a song that has so many memories for me when I was a kid, giggling the whole way through.

You guys must, must, must listen to the parody by Weird Al Yankovic, Living with a hernia. James Brown actually helped him with the video, providing the set the dancers and helping Al by showing him his moves.
Believe me that you will not be disappointed by going down the Weird Al rabbit hole.

This is a perfect video to renew the request that you guys react to some Weird Al. I have a feeling you two have avoided Weird Al over the years because he does parody songs and you think you won't enjoy them but think about this: James Brown loved Weird Al's parody of "Living in America" SO MUCH, he lent Al the use of his stage set, his band, and he taught Al some of his dance moves. People who "just make funny songs" don't get that kind of treatment and respect from artists. Al is at a different level. He's an institution in music at this point. Pretty much every artist (except for Coolio) has taken it as an honor to get one of their songs parodied by Weird Al and it's been said by artists that having Weird Al do a parody of one of your songs is a sign that you've made it in the music industry. Y'all are missing a trick by avoiding Weird Al.
If you decide to try him out -- and please do -- start with his parody of this James Brown song. Al's is called "Living With A Hernia" and it is both funky and hilarious. Or, if you want to dip into a song that Jay may know from his rap background, Al also does a parody of "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and Krayzie Bone. His version is called "White & Nerdy." Or, since you're both teachers, you might enjoy Al's parody of Robin Thicke's song "Blurred Lines." Al's version is called "Word Crimes" and is a lesson in good grammar.
Point is, there are SO MANY great Al songs -- Weird Al has been making songs since the early 80s and its a HUGE rabbit hole -- and, now that you've been doing this channel for a couple of years and really expanded your musical horizons, you'll recognize a lot of the songs he parodied and will be able to appreciate them the way the fans and the artists themselves have. Heck, even Kurt Cobain was stoked when Al said he wanted to do a parody of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" called "Smells Like Nirvana." He asked Al if he would make it about food -- because Al had a lot of songs about food and was kind of known for it early in his career -- but Al wanted to make the song about how hard it is to understand what Kurt is saying. Kurt loved it.
Btw, another artist you two like who loved Al's parodies of his songs so much that he lent Al sets, props, dancers, etc. was Michael Jackson. Al did parodies of MJ's songs "Beat It" and "Bad," and MJ was a big fan. Al's songs were called "Eat It" and "Fat" and the videos are spectacularly close to the originals (just silly).
So, yeah, if the artists you admire loved the parodies Weird Al made of their songs, there's no reason for you two to avoid Weird Al. There's a reason he's the only parody artist that most people can name. He's just at a different level.

Great moment on the way back to USA. But, I always tear up when they say, “Welcome home” at the US port and I see the kazillion US flags. Sweet.

The video of James Brown performing 'Please Please Please' live at the TAMI (it's on UA-cam), has to be one of the most incredible displays of stagecraft ever witnessed. No wonder the crowd were going nuts. I first saw this back in the 70s, when Robert Plant, a guest on a UK rock music show, insisted that the producers screen it.

James Brown's last residence was in Beech Island, South Carolina, not too far from where we live (Aiken). It was a sad Christmas morning in 2006 to wake up and find out he passed . . .

Another good song for today that was released earlier this year is "An American Here" by Dion and Carlene Carter. Yes, the same Dion who did Runaround Sue, still rocking at 84 going on 85. He released an album of duets earlier this year - "Girl Friends" and it is excellent :)
