Greetings from Alabama, USA! Given the Canadian preference for small arms made in Canada, I was expecting some flavor of CZ, since they could be built by CZ-owned Colt Canada. As for the P320 issues, Glock also had their teething issues back in the '80s, when they were first released. Pity the HPs can't be sold as surplus, and sold to US distributors. Americans would snap them up for their historical relevance. I did have a chance to buy one back in the '90s, complete with a worn Canadian flag sticker on the frontstrap. Somebody kick me...
We have had the Browning Hi Power for a fair amount of time. The same pistols since they were made 80 some years ago, that is the issue. If we had modern Browning Hi Powers they would most likely perform well. Also Browning does not have a 10 round magazine, it is a 13 round magazine.
For more than a decade some academics, at SFU, had a pretty terrific website called the "Canadian American Strategic Review", It had some very informative articles. One compared Canadian weapons to what the Greenland Patrol carried. They decided a 9mm pistol was inadequate for dissauding aggressive Polar Bears. As I recall, they used a Sig-Sauer that fired 10mm bullets.
I personally love the design of the p320 and was overjoyed when watching this video. Though of course, you can't ignore the reliability issues, and I hope some massive leaps happen to make this handgun more on par with glocks.
Also, once the faulty mags were removed from the firing line, we had zero stoppage with our Browning before we deployed for Afghanistan in 2009 and I was used as a range officer qualifying support trades on that old and very good gun. And we shot them a lot...Sadly, once in Afghanistan, we had some units needing sear or trigger and safety jobs done on there guns when we were qualifying them at night in KAF. I guess it made a lot of difference what unit you were from and how much serious were the weapon tech working on them before you deployed....I would trust my life to that gun any time, and if out of ammo it is tough enough to smash the face of anybody with it, not so many other gun can say as much and remain functional. I would also not be afraid to use one if a grenade had blown beside it before.
Thanks for the vid... nice to see a hardware upgrade. I thought the Seaking took a while to replace >.> Was the Browning the oldest serving item? What other item might have such a long service record (operational usage)?
I can't imagine anything older in such an important position as a sidearm. There are some Korean stockpiles of a few scattered clothing, medical items etc.
We're giving SIG 7.6 million for 7,000 polymer plastic pistols with some metal guts and a metal slide which have been mass made, and are at least 80% ready (polymer parts) with the other 20% being slides, springs, barrels and hammer mechanisms. The clip is probly both Metal&Polymer (the Browning hi power is completely old school metal) and everything most likely already in Storage because they are made by unmanned automatic 3D printers because Sig is so big and known not necessarily for reliability but popularity, but they will do the job. They have a 200$ Pellet version and Airsoft version of this that is a 1:1 replica. They do 1:1 replicas for a reason, easy conversion for war time sales and if they can't dump all their pellets n airsofts and have lots of orders for the 9mm version they don't have to manufacture them just switch clips and barrels amd some guts quick and the buyer doesnt need to wait unless they want custom guns for a specific group. (An old school gunsmith told me that) The 1:1 Reps have a metal slide too and springs and trigger mechanisms that have been outlawed in a shitload of countries for being 1:1 replicas that can be converted to a .22LR or 9mm version by changing the barrel and clip a few other inner elements that gunsmiths will know. I know prices have gone up cuz inflation but damn... they could literally swap existing parts that are on stand by at any Sig manufacturer. That's an extra 900$ if they were to take the easy route and the airgun replicas that accounted and let's say we're bound for potential Australian markets or others that are now recently so controlled and restricted in many countries. The Aussies completely outlawed everything including gel blasters and nerf guns in every State but Queensland which will probly follow suit with their feds eventually and will be pulled from shelves. Which say Sig buys back and converts them to real 9mm and sells them bulk to Canada for 1100$/pop. The airsoft version which is the one I seen personally, they could take a lil Dremel to the slide with a maple leaf stamp, switch some guts and parts and turn a 500%+ profit lol that's the same level of profit you get for a gun on the street even if you just whacked somebody in Canada with it and if the gun barrel is marked and CSI does an amazing job on ballistics and knows exactly what and who's weapon they are after, then the soldier it's registered to (if military guns are traceable?) I dunno i might be wrong but they sure try to make civilian models traceable in any way possible so ppl report it stolen either before it is used illegally or act dumb after the fact and say it was In a drawer or a small lockbox they would break before to seem credible. Some of these will end up on the streets for sure, because a low paid soldier could use it for a year of practice or battle and literally put 10,000 rounds through it til its basically fucked and still get 3-5k a piece in Southwestern Canada (BC and Alberta) and up to 8k in the Central Provinces. Plus they'll be issued a new weapon. Win-Win. And why 9mm! Fuckin turn it up a notch to at least .40 or preferably .45 or even 5.6 rifle caliber pistols that are becoming popular. And why SIG? does Colt Canada not make a Mil-Spec handgun? We use Colt C8 Assault Rifles do we not have a matching side piece? We can Def male one and just take ideas from multiple guns n make our own, like every other gun company and country. Save tax payer money on importation charges and other fees that are unnecessary for a country capable of creating their own side arm. I think they should consider the CZ9 Tac75 for a foreign 9mm or a simple HK USP .45 which Is an awesome, powerful and reliable weapon. What yall think?
I have a P320 X full size with X300 surefire and leupold DP pro red dot. I love it and it shoots very well. Didnt care for it when i was in but i bought a New one and i love it also. Worn out mags are a problem. The US military is changing its attitude towards side arms and hopefully that means more training and parts and mag replacements to keep them running the way they should
It's insane they picked this. The misfire issues it has are well-documented. They could've gone glock or M&P.. same price point, less reliability issues.
I know one of the big complaints with the p320 is the high bore axis compared to something like the Glock. The modular chassis system is really interesting though. The U.S adopted these too, but there was some controversy over the evaluation process. Happy the military is finally replacing the high powers at least.
