- This is my last adventure in Utah for awhile after spending over two months here! Join me while I camp and "safari" on Utah's little slice of Yellowstone...Antelope Island State Park. Antelope Island is an Island surrounded by the Great Salt Sale about 30 miles northwest of Salt Lake City. It is far removed from the city however as the island is inhabited by lots of wildlife including hundreds of Bison, Pronghorn Antelope, Big Horn Sheep. Deer, Coyotes and more! I see all of these animals on this trip with several hang around my camp. Come along on this little safari as I show you the gorgeous Island, my camp and grill some steaks!!

Troy's tip of the Day; Get yourself a little handheld propane torch to help you expedite lighting BBQ coals and campfires. They sell them at all the hardware stores. I BBQ almost everything veggies, meat, fish also smoke salmon, steelhead, and cheese and when I use hardwood or coals that's what I do.

Love the sunsets. Good call on driving around rather than hiking. The sign at 00:48 says " Bison may be dangerous". it should read "Bison are dangerous!" There have been several bison attacks (one fatal) on the island in recent years. I would not recommend hiking on Antelope island. That being said the scenery is stunning and in July and August when crossing the causeway to Antelope island you can see thousand of Avocet, Black Necked Stilts, Franklin's Gulls and dozens of other species of wading and shore birds. It is a sight to see. If you are planning a trip to Antelope island you should also include the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve. This is a Nature Conservancy property about 10 miles to the east but still on the GSL. It is free and features a 1 mile walking boardwalk loop though a fresh water marsh and upland grass. There is no camping but the property is well maintained and there are no Bison to worry about. The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve is a part of the GSL ecosystem that folks do not see as often and it is a great walk.
Antelope Island. A place I would most certainly want to visit. The cameo shots of your camper and truck rig are much appreciated. They add a dimension of the solitude and objectivity that goes into producing the moments of beauty you are adept at stringing together. I'm getting ready to take off for the wild places in my rig which is quite similar to yours. An '05 Duramax 2500 with an 845 Lance. The 845 is similar if not almost identical to the 825, except it has a slightly larger water carrying capacity. I've visited the wilds in the past, my first time in 1971 when my dog Maggie and I hitch hiked the country together. I turned 19 in San Francisco that year, having started out on the East Coast. Since then, the cross country trips have added up to 8 or 10, lost count, all variations of car camping, tent camping, hobo camping (sleeping on the ground by the highway or near unknown overlooks), and getting into a hotel when the moment called for it.
This will be my first time to travel with a camper and such luxuries (and liabilities!).
How different we may be, how kindred we are as pilgrims of the road.

I bought mesh netting pants and jacket (with hood that covers your face) for a Yukon trip. I thought everyone would laugh at me, but no, they were jealous! The pants and jacket may have cost about $25-30 for both and kept me from getting bit. I'm a bug magnet. I'm taking them with me on a trip to Wyoming this summer. Well worth it. Not too hot to wear either.

I''m originally from Utah. We liked going for drives to Antelope Island and eating buffalo burgers at the cafe when it's open. The lake has really shrunk though. We visit family there and everyone once in a while go to the island. I knew the man who grew up in the cabin there. It's very green by the cabin and there is a spring. Next time you go to the island, you'll need to go to the cabin. Sometimes you can see porcupines in the trees.

I camped for two nights at the Bridger Bay Campground two years ago. I would definitely visit there again. The no see ums bloom in the spring and a bit into summer then it gets too hot. I was there in spring and wore a net over my head. When it is raining or really windy the gnats aren't a problem. Just be prepared.
I totally loved my visit there and the camping was good there too...I had antelope, coyote, and Chukkar, and a big Jack rabbit, come by my site...my little dog was enjoying barking at them....TC and have a great week.

My husband and I were there a few years ago...not to camp, however. We saw bison -- up close, not personal. And, we did encounter a coyote -- a raggedy critter, indeed. We were there in July -- and fortunately, not inundated by the danged, ole, pesky biting bugs.
That was an excellent video. I loved the music choice and videography. Fantastic and relaxing. That was a whole lot of bison. Beautiful sunset!

You always seem to find the hidden gems of the country. Antelope Island makes that list also. The first scenes of the lake, I thought it was Mono Lake near Yosemite. Especially when you mentioned the bugs, I got attacked by them setting up camp just up from Mono Lake a few years ago. So, watch out if that's your next mountain destination! I'll guess your heading north to Wyoming though. Great video once again with wonderful relaxing music. Enjoy your drive and don't forget, when you reach a fork in the road, take it! Drive safe and as your gazing over beautiful landscapes, do what my wife and I do, say, "Don't forget the feeling". Thanks again for another memorable video.
