- Hyundai announced their new Anti-Theft Logic Software a couple of days ago. While it may seem like a good decision, does it handle its job well? And how does it do its job? Let's test that in this video
I had the upgrade done on my Elantra, but didn't know how it worked and would deter a thief. Thanks for covering all situations, very impressive upgrade.

I strongly recommend ALL Hyundai and Kia Key-start ignition owners to STILL purchase and use a "visable" anti-theft device, such as "The Club". Why? Because even if the software update DOES work, you want to discourage thieves from ATTEMPTING to steal your vehicle. Windows are expensive to replace!!
The dealer should actually give you one.
If you leave your car unlocked the anti theft doesn’t work the alarm goes off when the car is locked by the key fob and someone tries to start it
Unfortunately, this is true. Once the news came out about the brands being stolen left and right, I installed my own push to start (from key ignition) alarm system so technically they cant steal my car due to the ignition cylinder being removed. But still, if I forget to put that club on, hell, even with the club sometimes, an attempt is made on my car. I'm at the point of wanting to get rid of it due to the cost for windows and door key cylinders replacements. 🙃 I'm hoping to be reimbursed with the settlement, but after that, I think I'm done. 😅

I’m glad you shared this! Hopefully we can spread this information so young thieves will think twice when they see the sticker. Unfortunately my door was still messed with and broken However they were not able to get inside.

Kia trying to save money initially has cost the insurance companies millions and owners thousands along with the major inconvenience of lost time and other misfortunes . This should have been done when the cars were manufactured. Also no one will steal your car within 30 seconds of u arming it. Unless you're jacked that is 😒. Thanks for the video 👍🏿.
Yup. I agree with everything you said. The manufacturer caused this by not doing a good job debugging the alarm system before shipping.

All of you are wrong. The car comes standard with the immobilizer. Which I would have hoped he could have covered. I wanted to like the video but misinformation online is just disappointing. Several people in the comments have stated they have had the update and wasn't sure what was different. Everything I'm saying is in the owner's manual. My understanding is the update is to cover when a theft breaks into your car (and no their not going to have your keys) ...breaks open your dash or key lock cylinder with a screwdriver or crowbar they will not be able to start the car. Like other's have mentioned. If you use a scanner (and make no mistake a crook has a scanner) does the update cover this? W I wanted to like this video but it didn't come close to being informative. Looking forward to an updated video maybe
@@thomasallen6980there is no bug in the system. If there was kindly tell us what that is. I'm not against an update I just want to know what it intells. A good bit of what was in his video comes standard already.

This is my first comment on a UA-cam video (I think?). Excellent demonstration for Hyundai owners. Hyundai are great cars except for this software glitch in my opinion. While this software upgrade may not prevent all auto thefts, this will definitely slow down and hopefully discourage potential auto thieves
Still might use "The Club" when I need to go to certain areas which will make the car almost impossible to steal.
I'm not convinced it's a glitch. It's an update which I was hoping would be covered in the video. I can't comment on your car, but an immobilizer is standard.
Own it for over 5 years and you might change your mind. I have a Veracruz. My experience is less than stellar. Numerous issues with seals on the windows and doors. The door seals are just too small and keep falling off. The window seals have rotted away entirely by around year 5. I have replaced four door handles due to breaking. There is a recall for a valve cover gasket leak that they have recalled three times now because the fix doesn't work, and now they just made a cover to direct the oil away from the belt instead of fixing it. There is no transmission dipstick or drain for service. The alignment doesn't like to stay put. The back window blew out on the interstate, and while it could be a freak event, it also appears that the curve in the glass made a high stress region susceptible to breakage ($1000 window). My fuel tank straddles the drive line so is somewhat split in half. One day it just stopped draining the non pump side, so 1/4 of the tank is unusable. There are lots of squeaks and rattles and highway noise due to the bad door seals. The paint on the plastic parts started fading and chalking in the third year. The driver's window failed to roll up due to a poorly made plastic part and you have to buy the whole $180 receiver assembly to replace the 0.50 part. The fuel pump is around $500 which is ridiculous, but not the cause of the tank issue. Cv joint boots rotted out at 50K luckily covered by warranty. Body and most parts are way expensive. At 120K miles currently. No major engine or transmission issues, but lots of other things. All of the paint is peeling now at 12 years, but it took 25 years for my Ford to get to the same condition by comparison. Both stored the same.
For the most part they just deteriorate faster than other cars and have some design issues. The polymer/elastomer selection is poor quality.
I like how organized the engine bay is though. The engine and transmission appear to be well designed externally, and have room enough for service of components, though I haven't needed to yet
Although the software does help if used correctly, I would STILL strongly recommend using "The Club"(just in case). Unless there is really something "special" or unique about your vehicle, the visible "Club" will discourage most would be thieves.
My daughter’s car was updated today. :-) Still recommend a steering lock though. My thought was window stickers would be a great idea, and somebody must have been thinking at KIA and Hyundai.
Didn't they put the stickers on your car? You should go back and get them. KIA and Hyundai both provided red stickers that go on front side windows

243 comments and less than 10 people mentioned actually testing it. So many thanks for the video but no one comes back to say whether they tested it and whether it works. Actually, most of the comments say the car still starts even after waiting 30 or more seconds. What I would like to see is a document from Hyundai giving instructions on how to test it to ensure it actually works. No such document presented or referred to in this video. READ MY UPDATE!
Update: I have a 2013 Elantra that needs a key to start. I just went out to my car and tried the test, waiting 30 seconds. When I inserted the key, the 4 way's flashed and the horn alarm sounded. The car WOULD NOT start! I hit the unlock button on the FOB and the alarm stopped and the lights stopped.flashing.
I have a 2017 Santa Fe Sport and got the security update today. The car has a red light on the dash that is solid during the delay period and begins blinking when it is set. The main gripe with the alarm system in the car (not related to the update) is the vehicle blows the alarm set horn when triggered, not the main horn on the car which is significantly louder than the alarm set horn. Blow the main horn by pressing on the steering column to see the difference. It is major.
I think everyone should get a aftermarket alarm. That's what I told my nephew who had his 2018 Sonata stolen. What if the person breaks in the car not knowing it had the update. He could still damage the car (break the window and strip the ignition). If an aftermarket alarm is installed they would see the blinking light of the alarm and either go away or just break the window. Just a thought. Every tenth car is a Hyundai/Kia. It is like pot luck if your car gets picked to be stolen. Leave the car messy so they will pick a clean one since the parking lots are full of these. Just random selection.
There is a red sticker on both front door announcing the alarm system. Still, the damage wouldn't be as much as a totaled car. I have 0 deductible comprehensive and full glass too.
Aftermarket is a bad idea. It may not be compatible with all makes or models. Everything today is computer control from the stereo to the transmission.
I have an aftermarket alarm and immobilizer installed in my Sonata. That didn't prevent thieves from breaking back side window and trying anyways. Blinking light, loud alarm, immobilizer decal on side window and they still tried. Thankfully they failed but still ripped apart steering column and broke a window. I don't think thieves really care if they see a blinking red light.
@@blazingdank420I am currently dealing with this! I bought a used 2019 Elantra on Friday. Saturday morning passenger rear window was busted in and the steering column and key ignition were both off. A metal thing was jammed into the ignition as is they were trying to get it started. The anti-theft decals are on the front windows, but I don’t actually know if this particular car got the upgrade. After buying the car I drove past a Hyundai but decided to plan to go there Saturday (after being at a dealership for 3 hours buying the car I was just ready to go home). I wish I would’ve just went to have them check it out.
‼UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has supported this video, but my car was still stolen and totaled. It happened at the speed of light and I cannot exactly remember what happened. This was after the software update and I still suggest everyone to get the update. It was fun while it lasted with my Elantra

Make no mistake. Thieves have already found how to 'bypass' this. I'm on forums and we have already Owners with their cars stolen *after* the update. Not to mention all the damage thieves do to the ignition, it's a solid headache to fix the damage because it's a lot of wiring and hard to put everything back correctly - remember, thieves rip everything. Your best friend is still a bright colored Club Bar. And for those guys who repeat "a club bar can be cut", of course it can be cut, only 90% of thugs don't travel with an angle grinder.

My wife is a traveling nurse and owned 5 Suzuki cars over a 20+ year period. Suzuki quit selling cars in the US or she'd still own one. The Suzuki dealer she dealt with all those years switched to Hyundai so she stayed with them. Her current Hyundai is one of the high theft key start vehicles. She took it in for the Hyundai security upgrade recently and was told how the upgrade will work. First off, if your key fob quits working the car is dead. Using the key to unlock the door will not allow you to start the car. The upgrade uses the key fob door unlock to allow ignition. The dealer recommends changing your key fob battery yearly. If you are on vacation and you lose or damage your key fob, it's going to be expensive. Carry both key fobs so you have a back up. Naturally keep apart from each other. We are lucky in one aspect and that is we had the dealer install a genuine Hyundai remote start at purchase. The kit came with two remotes and keys that were cut to the car's ignition. So, we have 4 key fobs. She hid one of the factory key fobs in the car so if something happens to the key fob she uses daily she has the hidden one as a back up. She can unlock the drivers door with the key, then close the door and lock/unlock the door with the hidden key fob. The dealer also said there is a Compustar alarm system being offered at around $600 installed that is OK'd by Hyundai. It can be installed by the dealer or any Compustar certified installer. You can get the same Compustar system by going to a Compustar dealer for around $400 installed. So, keep fresh batteries in your key fobs or keep a fresh battery in the glove box and learn how to change it in the key fob. If your traveling, have your second key fob with you in case the daily use one is lost or damaged. If not, the car will have to be towed to the dealer and a new key fob programmed and ignition key cut. Could get expensive.
I drove a suzuki forenza when it was new to work and put 100k on it before it threw a timing belt. 34k-144k when I Rebuilt it I learned so much about what makes a reliable engine. The suzuki had a 2.0l engine from gm and they use cheap headgaskets and plastic pulley parts for the timing. Toyota uses MLS headgaskets and good pulleys and also they didn't have interference engines back in the day.
The real problem is the criminals need to lower the age for lengthy sentencing

I found with my i20 Hyundia. If you press the lock button twice as you lock. That puts the alarm on straight away.
i20 aren't in America; and your car most likely already has a proper immobilizer tbh
I have a 2020 Hyundai accent and they just tried to steal my car a couple of days ago. I thought my car was gone. And then when they couldn't steal it I realized my car has this update....They basically just messed up my window and the ignition but 😭 I'm so glad that's all. I really thought my car was going to be apart of the trend. Honestly still want to get the steering wheel lock just for more precaution
You ARE part of the trend. Your car was broken into and damaged because it's a kia/hyundai. You just got lucky it wasn't stolen. You should have already purchased a wheel lock a long time ago. This unfortunate incident is your lesson.
My 2013 Elantra was stolen 7/12/23. The police found it 4 days later with 4 boys in it (15, 17, 18, 19 years old) My car was caught up in a tictok trend. I purchased a steering wheel club before getting the car back. Im scheduled to get the upgrade next week. I pray they dont steal it a 2nd time before the upgrade. This experience has drained and traumatized me 😒

And I placed a couple Apple air tags in my car just in case something happens like that I can track it. And I got a cellular security camera places on the dashboard 🙏🏽 maybe these could help you and stay safe!
Great video and demonstration. I’m in the market for a small car as my DD and I really like the upcoming 2024 refresh of the Elantra. I’m just worried that Kias and Hyundais will be attempted to be stolen cuz the thieves are not gonna know better, especially if they’re young and inexperienced. They’re gonna smash the window, tear the dash and steering column apart, and leave you stuck with the repair bill.

Thank you for this demonstration! The anti theft does work! Gives me a piece of mind. I’m still going to put a lock on my steering wheel. I have the little anti theft sticker on my car and someone still tried to break in. They jacked up my door lock I had to get a new lock and cover replacement cost $378.00 and took 3 1/2 hours to get it fixed. Thanks again for sharing!

I mean this update will somewhat work but for short term. I think Hyundai and KIA should’ve done is replaced entire key ignition and steering column. They need to Redesign the ignition tumbler from USB shape to something else that will make harder to steal.
Yes! This is what I’m preaching as well. But still feels like Hyundai are cutting costs on trying to prevent this. An upgraded ignition would make all of this more durable
The reason, the thieves breaks the window, is to not set off the factory alarm, when the door is opened. I have a 2019 Sorento, that was stolen last July. When I got it back from being repaired, I had an aftermarket alarm system installed, with no issues so far.

The only issue with your testing is that hyundai claims that the car detects the key fob. So try starting the car without the keyfob with you. The dealer told me that it is not supposed to start even if you open the door with the key if you don't unlock it with the keyfob and you don't have the keyfob in the car. So if a thief knows how to jimmy the lock, the car will start if the keyfob does not have to be in the car.
Yes and I noticed this as well. I really think the test cases Hyundai have thought of are similar if not the same to what I’ve tried. There’s really only so much this update can try to protect from.

@@anonymouse7394 so I'm not sure if u had the same issue as my Elantra 2018 but shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear it would take a very long time. And my Elantra is well maintained so it shouldn't be having to take so long to accelerate. That's what I meant by being more responsive

I went to the Hyundai dealership last year for my so-called software upgrade but all they did was change the ignition inside the steering column. I asked about the alarm system and kill switch, and the guy said that Hyundai "never" said anything about changing the software. I think I'm gonna look for another Hyundai dealership because I live in an apartment complex that has problems with break-ins
I have a 2012 Tucson . I don’t know if the elantra is set up the same as mine but real quick just look under the steering wheel. Near the obdII plug you will see a wiring just kind of dangling that has a small button on it. Press the button.
Thank you for the demonstration! I just got the update on my 2018 Kia and I wasn’t really sure what they had changed but now I know. I did buy a club wheel lock just to be safe if I park in a more sketchier area, but it’s pretty awesome how the update works. I do now have stickers on my windows saying I have the update so hopefully that will also be a deterrent as well.

In response to Sandysan the thieves will break the window and then unlock the door. When the door opens the alarm goes off and even with the key you have the ignition is immobilized. They cannot start the car. This is how the new ant-theft software operates. I have a KIA Optima and just had the software installed. I tested it to make sure it worked. YOU HAVE TO LOCK IT WITH THE KEY FOB TO INITIALIZE THE ALARM SYSTEM. It works as it's designed to work. For the car to start you have to unlock it with the key Fob or the ignition is immobilized, too.
When they break the back window they climb in and dont unlock the door. for my 2020 Elantra 2 clicks with the FOB engages the update no need to wait 30 secs. but I dont need the FOB to get into my car as the key when turned one time to the right at the door lock disengages alarm I see the headlight light flash once.. then I am able to start ignition with the key. maybe people are getting diff. experiences based on the year make and model. but this has been my experience. to need to get extra batteries.
@@aprolifix My alarm will disengage when I use the key in the door too. But, the system will not set if you lock it with the inside locks. You need to lock the door with the fob or the key in the door. If they break in thru the back window, the alarm will go off if the try and start the car. And, the immobilizer stops the car from being started. Or, at least in my experience with the new system.
@@GrimmMarvinUnderstood, but from the people I haved talked to if they break the back passenger window the alarm does not go off. as they are no sensors allocated.
@@aprolifix The new software I had installed I tested it myself. I engaged the lock while sitting in my car with the fob and waited 30 seconds. Without unlocking the door with the fob, I put the key in the ignition and the alarm went off. I turned the key and nothing happened. Once I hit the fob to unlock the car the alarm stopped and the engine started. So, even if they break in the car thru the back windows, it won't start with the new system without the fob or key unlock. Just like the person in the above video showed to us.

I was able to started it 10 mins later after I locked it with the fob and then opening with the key
Thank you for this video. I had my car updated a while back, but never really knew anything much else. At least now I know about the 30 second wait, which is really valuable to know. Is it true that Hyundai was supposed to also supply a steering wheel club or was that only for those who couldn't get the upgrade? Also I heard about a $3000+ settlement for owners of qualified vehicles. But maybe that's just for those whose cars were actually stolen or had attempts of theft of their vehicles.. good job, thanks!
i got an older model, and i got the anti theft but i still put the club on
I wonder why they could not add a extra feature like a key with a chip. If you don't have the chip then the computer in car will not allow it to start. Change ignition switch, key and update software. Not that hard.
They can’t add an immobilizer to already existing cars easily and cheaply.

It's still cheaper than the class action lawsuit payout and if the insurance companies can subrogate the insurance claims to them because of manufacturer negligence. Not to mention the good will of fixing it right.
I have a Kia and I think it’s the same as Hyundai’s software update! I just got it recently (about a month ago).. my car was stolen in July of this year and so I’ve been trying to be more secure.. I wanna get a wheel lock club also just in case.. I have tested it.. it’s only active when the car is locked… but I haven’t tried locking the door, waiting 30 seconds then starting it like you did… I watched a video where a guy unlocked the door from the inside, his alarm sounded and then he tried starting the car. So when putting the key in the ignition even when the car is locked, it alarms and doesn’t work??? Is Kia the same way on that too?

Such a great video I got the update the sticker they put on the means nothing with my dark tint you can't see the sticker and why they put the sticker on the two front windows since they always break out the back windows the dealer didn't even know about the 30 second delay I thought the update did not work and was going to bring my car back until I seen your video thanks again
Except that’s not how they steal the cars. They break off the entire key tumbler to start the car with a usb. So the alarm doesn’t go off and the engine doesn’t disable because they don’t use the key slot.

Hi the update does work… my 2021 Hyundai Tucson SE was stolen after the update, and yes the door was looked. They drilled a hole into my door and got in then stole my car.

my 18 elantra sport is a manual and that's usually enough theft deterrent in the united states also i was lucky that my 2012 veloster had push to start ignition and a manual as well so my current being the same i know i'm pretty safe against the kia boys lmao. but it's nice they addressed this.

Question though: if you double press the lock button on remote after exiting, does it activate antitheft mode immediately, or does it still wait 30 sec? Also, any glass break/motion detector modules you can recommend that easily add to the factory system?
I just got the update Sunday on my 2018 Hyundai sonata and I’ve tested it like you did and nothing happened…..it started as normal.

Anyone looking to protect their car, I recommend the JDI ghost key push start switch. It adds an actual immobilizer to the system and costs 150 and then needs to be installed
Let’s say I park somewhere and I turn my car (2018 Hyundai Sonata Se) off and lock it while I’m still in the car ( I still did not get the update btw) and I try to open the door it will set the alarm off either way. Let’s say my windows was down and I locked my car, and someone tried to open the door by unlocking it from the inside, I believe that the alarm will go off still. I believe the anti-theft upgrade is just the turning the car on and off and setting the alarm on. I should probably test it before and after
Thank you so much for explaining how to activate the alarm. My dealer told me that I just needed the key to be in the ignition to turn the alarm off! I called Hyundai's customer service number and got a girl working from home who I had little faith in. By the way I have to push my fobs lock button twice to activate the alarm. Either case thanks again!
I tried it and it set off the alarm. Then tried to start it and it killed my ignition. Hopefully it works. We having a lot car theft in our neighborhood 🥺

i had a 2011 kia optima that was going to get that update and days before it went in it was totalled because i hit a deer but i did buy another kia optima but this time the one i got is 2 years newer and it has push button start it will not start if the remote is out of the car i wish hyundai and kia would have done with all there cars
Gn Sir ,thank u very much for this info , my 2017 Hyundai accent was in a lil accident, a small dent to bumber , bonnet and right light broke up , after when I bounce ,I switched off ,and when d other driver and I was ready to go to d police station,let's say about 30 minutes after d accident happen ,I tried starting d car , it took a lil while before it start , parked it home d night,d next morning it could not start ,that took place April month end 2023 , since that it never start
I got the update for my sonata. The next week someone punch the driver door lock and punch the ignition to start my car. They were able to move my car. Since I didn't leave the remote in the car. They couldn't get out of the garage. The police showed me the whole attempted thief on video.
Had this update done to my 2013 Genesis coupe but it doesn’t do this? I tried it and it still let me turn it out. Gonna take it back to the dealer and see if everything’s okay
Can easily break the window, slide in without opening the door, break your ignition cylinder and still start your car…. No “upgrade” is a sufficient substitute for not having an immobilizer 👍

No it was in the vehicle. But they wouldn't have cared regardless
I got the updated on May 3rd 2023 and on June 22nd they stole it so i locked it with my keys control and they still stoled it ☹️😡😒 so i seriously think its all bullshit or they didn't do crap and just put the anti theft stickers in the windows 😩
That’s because they break off the key tumbler and bypass it with a usb. So the update doesn’t work at all unless the thieves magically have your key but not your key fob. It’s a useless update

I just went and checked my car it does have a 30 seconds away from when you set the alarm same way the doors will not unlock with the push button even if you open up the door the alarm goes off and you still cannot start the car just the way it's supposed to work I used to do car alarms and remote starters back in the 90s
My car got broken into the night I got the security update. My jet did wasn't working after the break in and I was still able to start it. I'm wondering if the dealership set me up
U work hard for your stuff and these thieves mainly teenagers just wake up with a stupid idea to steal your car and you can't shoot them to protect your stuff because they weren't being physical to you. Bullshit and most of them get away with it every single time
I did the update today & now my car doesn't alert when I lock it & the tail lights don't come on anymore smh..now I have to go back for them to fix it smh

Thanks for this vid. Thieves tried to steal my Kia Sportage 2 weeks ago. They failed to take it (thank God), but damaged the ignition. The local Kia dealership said they are doing this upgrade at no charge. With the upgrade, does the alarm go off if they break a window? The would-be thieves broke a rear window, and the alarm did not go off.
The alarm goes off when they open a door, you can test that by leaving your window down, hit lock on the fob, wait over 30 seconds, reach in, open the door, you'll get the horn.
So the theives can easily get past the steering wheel clubs?
it takes much longer, basically need a hacksaw to cut the steering wheel, and that itself will deter most thieves
None of my two remotes work after the update, and have no power on doors and lights after turning off the car
Wonder if the system would remained armed if the battery power was disconnected then reconnected.

yes pretty much all factory alarm systems have a memory chip and they go back to the status they were originally in when the power was disconnected

No I never had any lights displayed. Some vehicles do, some don’t unfortunately
Some aftermarket alarms need that same 30 seconds.
I can unlock your car door by popping the lock off and start the car without the alarm because it thinks the key opened the door
@ElantraMan but most people don’t know how to do that they just break the window so u are safe and even if u leave your car unlocked they will be deterred away by the anti theft stickers becuase they don’t know how it works
I have a remote start system that was not installed by Hyundai. Im expecting the update to render it useless. Has anyone with remote start had the update and what is youe experience if you have?
Yes, I have an aftermarket remote starter so I can answer this question. When I 1st tried to get the update in June of 2023, they told me they couldn't do it. I guess they were having too many issues with bricking the remote starter, so the flat out told customers, "If you have one, we will not do the update." They referred me to a site to get reimbursed for a steering wheel lock and that was the end.
Fast forward, I just got the software update a week ago. I tried my remote starter and it still worked ... just not every time. I called the location where it was originally installed, they said we have an appointment for this week and we can reprogram your system at no cost. I originally had the starter put in 8 yrs ago, took them about 90 mins to reprogram and test. They said they have run into this quite frequently since the software update, but it's not a problem. Hope this helps.

No it’s the same key fob. They upgrade the software within the anti theft computer in the car
