George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 - 2 November 1950) was an Irish playwright, critic, and social activist who was best known for his wit and his criticism of Victorian era morality. He was also a co-founder of the London School of Economics.
Shaw was born in Dublin in 1856 and moved to London in 1876. where he wrote novels, essays, and the three-volume biography The Life of Schiller (1888). His career as a professional playwright began in 1894 with Arms and the Man. He continued to write prolifically until his death. At one point, he remarked that he had "little left in him" after completing his final work.
He wrote over 60 plays, including Pygmalion (the basis for My Fair Lady), Major Barbara, Man and Superman, Caesar and Cleopatra, Saint Joan, Androcles and the Lion (with Henry Morley), Heartbreak House, and The Apple Cart.
In addition to writing plays, he also wrote political prose such as "The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism," "An Unsocial Socialist," "Fabian Essays," "Facts for Freethinkers," and "Essays of George Bernard Shaw”. He was also a prolific writer of short stories: "How He Lied to Her Husband," "The Luck of Barry Lyndon," "The Undiscovered Country," "The Inca of Perusalem" and many others.
His political views ranged from Toryism to revolutionary socialism, but Shaw's wit made him one of the most significant critics of British life and institutions. His fictional works were written mainly for stage performance; they often deal with social issues such as class conflict, marriage, infidelity, ethics, religious differences, and hypocrisy.
Bernard Shaw had a great sense of humor and that he wanted to make people think about important issues such as social class, gender roles, justice and equality between nations/races/religions/etcetera; but mostly we can learn that he was a genius who lived his life with dignity despite being mocked by many people during his lifetime due to his looks or political views.
