- What is the purpose of life? How can we enjoy and live a good life in a chaotic world? In his video, you'll find some of the greatest and best Charles Bukowski quotes that show his deep insights into life and can help you change the way you see the world and live a good life without trying, by just being.
Charles Bukowski (born Heinrich Karl Bukowski) is a 20th-century German-born American poet, novelist, and short story writer who lived from 1920 to 1994. He is one of the most famous writers in American history and produced over 50,000 poems and published more than 100 books in his lifetime.
Bukowski was known for his dark, gritty style of writing that often featured themes such as relationships, poverty, and alcoholism. His work often depicts the struggles of lower-class people and those who live on society’s fringe. He described himself as “a guy who has been thrown out of every job he ever had… a guy who has been kicked out of every place he's ever lived… a bum”.
Despite being famous for his writing, Bukowski didn't always have an easy time making ends meet. In fact, he spent much of his life working at various odd jobs including postal worker, dishwasher, and construction worker before finally settling into his career as a writer.
Bukowski's life was riddled with tragedy. His father died when he was young; he lost one brother to suicide and another to alcoholism; his mother died in an insane asylum; he married four times; he struggled with alcoholism himself (which led to multiple arrests for public drunkenness); but despite all this, he managed to produce some of the most powerful work ever written about love, loss, pain-and beer.
Bukowski published his first book at the age of 19 titled “Poems Written Before Jumping Out of an 8 Story Window” in 1938. His first book of poetry was published when he was just 22 years old under the title "A Way To Be Loved." It didn't sell very well at first-it only made $5 for each copy sold-but it eventually caught on with readers and helped him get other publishing deals later on in life.
Some of his most famous works include "Notes of a Dirty Old Man", which is a series of columns written for the underground newspaper Open City in Los Angeles between 1963-1965; “Post Office”, which is the first novel written by him; "The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over The Hills", which is a collection of poems from 1973-1975; and "Hot Water Music", which is an autobiographical novel from 1976-1977.
In this video, I’ve compiled a collection of Charles Bukowski’s quotes on life, love, people, politics, society, and solitude that can change your perspective on life and leave a mark in your mind.
