Sean was an amazing musician, combining blues, soul, jazz and funk. I live in Minnesota, and first discovered him and his band at "Blues on The Range". I was blown away. Subsequently, I was able to catch three more of his shows up here. The most memorable was in the dead of winter at Bev's Juke Joint in Superior Wisconsin. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the band, and between sets sat down and talked with Sean and the great band. I offered to buy Sean a drink, but he said he was only 20! I still listen to his music, and passed on my love of his stuff to my children. RIP Sean. You were the best.

The man lived inside the music. He was one of the most amazing guitar players/singers I've ever seen and I've been playing guitar for over 50 years. I paid my respects at his grave a few years ago. Such a loss of so much fine music waiting to spring forth from his talent. RIP, Sean, you were the real deal.

Since I discovered Sean and his music, my life has never been the same.

I met him at Austin's Waterloo Records. He played with Susan Tedeski. Buddy Guy was there, but only to sign his CDs. Sean took the time to hang and talk more than anyone. Just as good soul.
    I'm glad I met him!

    Taken far too early.
I will play some blues for Sean tonight.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Sean at Cementin Park in Whitehall, PA. I considered him "The Great White Hope of The Blues!" The next big talent after SRV. The torch bearer that would carry the Blues on to the next generation. There hasn't been anyone since him that has captured my attention.

Absolute monster on guitar and one of the best musicians I've heard recently. Tragic that he left us early, but it's a reminder to be kind, you never know what someone is going thru behind the scenes...

I never heard of Sean til recently. I came across his cover of simple twist on you tube and wow I thought it was the best version I’ve ever heard, even better than Bob himself. I just came to search more of his songs and didn’t know he passed. This video brings tears down my face. RIP.

I just looked up Sean’s simple twist of fate video a few days ago and watched it. Now after 5 years you just hearted my comment just after I watched his video again. Now here I am and watched this video again with tears falling down my face another time. I am a very sensitive person as well and struggle a lot in this insensitive world. My only hope is that there is a God above and I try to stay as close as I can. I’m sorry for your loss. God bless.

Im a gifted blues player. I have Bipolar disorder. my depression all started with me telling my parents that 'Im sad, and i don't know why". Im getting closer to 28 every day. At this point Id be happy to live the rest of my short life as Sean did his. Not plagued with an eternity of misery, but blessed with a talent all my own, and to go out as a hero with the stars as the limit... To become immortalized.

Michael... that was not Sean’s wish. He was in a treatment facility that failed him. He wanted a family and a normal part of his life like every one else. He loved his sisters and would never hurt them by leaving them. He had so much more to offer life and music. Sean used to use those same words, but most of his life was good and happy. Of course, he was plagued by depression and anxiety and his way of coping through his addiction to alcohol. There is hope for your depression. Investigate new therapies like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. There is no glory in dying, only a talented life lost to the world, leaving your family damaged forever. That would never have been Sean’s intent. His death was a tragic accident. Every person fills a spot in this world that no one else can. Sean would want you to live and play the blues. It’s exactly what he wanted to do. I hope you are taking medicine and have a counselor. I want to hear YOUR music.

Did see Sean at Notodden Blues Festival, best concert I have ever seen. I met him after the show and talked to him for a long time. He was so nice and humble, he really appreciated that I was another young guy that love the blues. Both of us born in the year 1979. I was so sad when he died, still listen to his music, he is still one of my favorite artist. I can't even imagine how big this loss was for his friends and family, when it had such a deep impact on me who had just spoke to him for 20-30 minutes. I am so happy his music lives on forever.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a kind message. As Sean’s Mom, I knew he was a good person but hearing it from someone touched by one meeting helps me. It’s very hard to lose a child. The hardest part hoping he’s not forgotten. Sean really appreciated his fans. It can be tough playing to a crowd you don’t know. When someone like you takes the time to interact with him personally, it would have meant a lot to him. I hope you continue to listen to his music and spread the word. I hope you have a healthy and happy holiday season.

@@seancostellofund4710 I will always listen to his music, he is still one of my favorite artists. His music is so honest and real, i can feel every note he plays have a meaning, and you can feel how much feeling he put in his playing. He did the same with his singing. Sean is the only one that i have seen that had the same level as Stevie Ray Vaughan when it comes to put his soul and passion into playing and singing. I have introduced many people to his music and they are all blown away, so i think his music will live on forever. I listen to music as therapy during tough times, listened a lot to Sean’s music when one of my close family member was sick and hospitalized for over a year, so he helped me through som really hard times with his music. I also listen to his music when life is good. I play guitar myself, and if need inspiration i see one of Sean’s videos on UA-cam.
As a father myself, I can’t even imagine how hard it is to lose a child, i hope you find great comfort in how deep impact your son made on me and many others.
His music will live on forever giving people joy, and help people through tough times.
But most of all, he was a really great guy.
I send you some love from Norway, and also hope you have a healthy and happy holiday season.
      Tord.

I stumbled upon Sean's music while looking for a Robert Ward song called "Love is Amazing." The only thing I could find on UA-cam was Sean's version of it and it blew my mind. Who was this young kid who plays well beyond his years, with the same nuanced but frenzied guitar attack of his heroes and who sings just as well ? That same day I learned that he had since passed, tragically. As a guitarist and performer I now look to Sean with the same reverence as I would an O.V. Wright, Bobby Womack or Freddie King. Those artists drew so many others to them, not by technical ability, but from this other-worldly spirit and passion that few are possessed by in our short time here on earth. I'm sad for those who loved and lost him. But he left the world something in his all too short life and now my life is a little richer for knowing about Sean. Like the Robert Ward song says, Love IS Amazing. So is Sean Costello.

One of the best blues guitarists ever... Beale street Blues Society Best Performer at age 14; Handy Award nominee at 20; Gold Recird holder at 19; best new artist at French Blues Feste 2003; member GA Music Hall of Fame, etc., etc. Called next Eric Clapton by Vintage Guitar in 2008. Featured in book on Les Paul guitars. And my son :). That happens to be one of my favorite covers of his. I'm happy you found him. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks for replying, Debbie. Meant every word. Now I mean it more since Sean's mommy wrote me:) Whenever a loved one passes, I always think of the line from Shakespeare's Macbeth which always helps: "Your grief should not be equal to his worth, because then your sorrow would never end." Love from Chicago. Best, Steve.
PS. I'm also a writer and would be happy to write about your boy if you're ever releasing a new recording or on an anniversary. My name is Steven Karras and a lot of my articles are up online.

Having followed Sean's career since "Calling the Cops" his death was so sad. I'm very familiar with bi-polar having been the partner of a person afflicted. He was a brilliant talent - singer , guitarist and songwriter . Its devastating for any parent for their child to pre decease them. My thoughts are with. His wonderful musical legacy lives on.
