    I just bought a 12 set of the polychromos and fell so in love with them. (almost went to the Lumiance but that price is...geeze) They go on the paper so buttery smooth and the colors pop. They are amazing at blending and layering. I actually use Walmart sketch paper with these and they work awesome on it. Taking your time when using these is something that I have learned real fast. You can't just start off with hard pressure and expect magic to happen that fast lol I am getting the full set in a couple of days because...well come on!!!! Look at how gorgeous they are lol I cannot just have 12! I want them all...ALL OF THEM^^ Very nice video BTW^^ You did them justice and I agree that they are worth it.

    I get that buying pencils in sets is cheaper per pencil, but I find that my preference in colored pencil purchasing, especially for more expensive pencils like these, the Luminance, and the Albrecht Durer, is to buy a medium sized set (I bought the 60 set of these) and supplement it with the colors that are missing that I feel I would use a lot. (I ended up with about 72 of the Polychromos total.) This way, I spend a bit less total, and I don't end up with the colors I know I won't use. (It also encourages me to experiment more with color mixing.) I have a 120 set of Prismacolors I bought 10 years ago, and I've used up many of them, but most of the neons, magentas, metallics, etc remain almost untouched. Just a thought for people who know they won't use certain colors and want to save a few dollars overall.

      heytogrey I totally agree with you, if you are a Colored pencil artist and your area of expertise is specialised, say botanical, wild life or fan art etc, a smaller set with perhaps a few additional open stock colours would be a much more cost effective solution. However I do feel that this would be more suited toward experienced artists. For new Colored pencil artists however I do feel a full set initially would be advisable, In particular if the individual was finding their area to specialise in. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting down to start a beautiful project and half way through you discover you are absent one or two colours or more and you need to wait a few days whilst you place an order for those colours. It is a hard call, to advise on this particular area as it is very much personal choice.
      The ideal situation would be to have the least amount of colours, of the highest grade pencils for the cheapest price that will fulfil you creative needs. Thank you so much for your support and stopping by the channel

    The anti-breakage system, if I'm not mistaken, is the bonding of the core to the wood. Other pencils are lacking this feature and therefore break more easily because the cores are loose inside. I feel like you get way more bang for your buck when investing in this set due to their strength, durability, longevity and lightfastness and though they're not cheap, they are more affordable than caran d'Ache Luminance or Holbeins. They're just amazing pencils. Plus they blend and layer exceptionally well.
    I am in complete agreement with your review. FC Polys kinda speak for themselves, don't they?

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +2

      You are defiantly right about FC Polys being cheaper than the Holbein, but Luminance although still more expensive, they are coming down in price, but then there are only 76 in the Luminance range. I think perhaps the Caran d'Ache Pablo are best compared to the FC Polychromos, but even they are more, but here in the UK only £40 difference.
      Thank you so much for your wonderful comment I really appreciate you commenting and watching the video, thank you.

    I personally love binge watching colouring pencil hauls and reviews. Just to look at the glory. I have a 36 set Polychromos and absolutely love them. I'm definitely going to get the 120 set at some point. I'm obsessed with the feel of quality of them, the way they feel in your hand.

    I actually do love the kind of translucent quality of these. Building up layers of color like a painting. Like in painting you know which colors are opaque and translucent. You use them for various techniques or to build gradual color and subtle detail.Of course I started out loving just opaque and then later on found that translucence has it's own qualities as well. I would say everyone has different tastes and meet your needs/wants. These were perfect to me.(Before I was addicted to prismacolors buttery blends and I would say they were opaque too. Except they were not as lightfast as I wanted and the thing that everyone says...They broke a lot.)

    Hi again! Nice review! 😉 I have derwent skintones and I've been using them on strathmore toned tan 400 and canson mi teintes but it seems that it takes me a lot of pressure to cover and I don't quite like the resulting texture. Most probably it's me because I'm a beginner ;-) but I wonder if I could get better results with these (?). I've seen your reviews on Derwent coloursoft, but even so, what's your opinion? 😉😀

    I've got a set of these coming for christmas. The set ( Derwent)I have been using has been ok but you require a lot of pressure to get decent pigmentation. I have lots of problems neurologically and with my joints too. So I'm hoping that these Polychromos will make life easier due to the ability to achieve good pigment load on the paper using minimal pressure and building up with light layers for blending.

    • @capyboppy
      @capyboppy 8 років тому +3

      The Real Mythril I bought a single Derwent Studio coloured pencil to see if I would like it, and it was horrible. So hard and hardly any pigment laying down. I bought a 36 set of PC and have added another 20 to them :-). Much as I love them I have found the Holbein brand from Japan is the creme de la creme. Like butter laying down. They cost £30 for 12. Expensive I know but an absolute dream to use. My birthday is in January and I am asking for Amazon vouchers so I can buy a bigger set.

      The Art Gear Guide absolutely. I love them you can build the layers with virtually no pressure, and even when it comes to burnishing you don't have to press very hard. They apply smoothly so you don't feel much resistance when using them. I find that I can use them for significantly longer than other brands that I have.

    I love my polychromos' to bits!!! I just realised recently that you hadn't done a review of these and was thinking of asking if you could haha. Just now saw this pop up and I'm so happy you reviewed them!! Always fun listening to another artist's thoughts on an art supply even if I've already seen many reviews of em. So yeah Harry, keep making as many reviews as ya want, I'm sure many, including me, will be more than happy to watch em. Another great review by the way, I really need to upgrade to that wonderful 120 set :3

      Coloured Pencil Reviews You're so welcome Harry!! Yeah I know what you mean, whenever I think of doing a review of something that's already been done before, for a second I think like...wait there's already so many, is there any point in me making any? And then I tell myself, I can keep watching reviews of the same product by different people over and over again...so I guess other people might not mind my review as well. And yeah true!! Watching reviews of art supplies are super fun :D I was actually planning on doing a review of Polychromos too...probably will in a few weeks. Cheers Harry, have a great day!

      I am fine thanks. How are you? I shall be visiting Mum in Blackpool for a few days on Friday so that should be good. I shall have to avoid going in the local art shop (Granthams) as I can easily spend 20 quid in there. Carlisle has a distinct lack of art shops. If 50 grand ever came my way I'd open one & I'd make sure it wasn't intimidating like most of them are. I'd have pictures made by little kids in the window to entice punters in..preferably kids and their colouring book addict Mums!☺️

    I've always always preferred oil based pencils over wax. I just never got the satisfaction out of wax like I do oil pencils in layers. I'm a watercolor artist so I wonder if it comes from preferring to work in transparent layers. Anyway, I bought the 72 set very barely used from someone who no longer used them... and then immediately bought the rest open stock. I'd heard so nuch about them but I had a ton of budget oil sets that I use and LOVE. and while those sets are great... polychromos are on another level they're incredible. Big know luminance is supposed to be amazing and I'm sure they are but polys are just the tippy top for me and I wouldn't spend more money on a pencil that worked differently. Im happy to keep my prismas, lightfasts, chromaflows and black widows for my wax pencils needs. These pencils are incredible. For people who prefer light detail work, or layers... there's no better. I know some people really prefer a thick, waxy lay down. That's fine and luminance and prisma and even derwent lightfast will fulfill their needs.

      Smoothie mate thanks a million for your kind comment, I really appreciate you stopping by mate. The 60 set that they do is actually really good and is actually well laid out and divided up. The pencils are in sets of ten, yellows, greens, blues, reds, browns and greys. Although it is not a landscape set, if you google the 60 set and check out the images, you can see how well the vast majority of the colours could be used in a landscape setting. But I know what you mean, a landscape set would be nice, especially for artists such as yourself Smoothie mate, your art is phenomenal, whether it is pencil, watercolour or coloured pencil. Absolutely loved your last video mate.

    I have the full set of 120 and I absolutely love them. But I do have just one question. Why the solvent?? They have so much lovely color in them anyways, so what ecactly is the solvent for?? And are they originally ment for using solvents? They are not like those watercolor penils, or??

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 років тому

      Line Boje Hansen thank you so much for you wonderful comment, I am speechless and incredibly honoured. In answer to your question, the solvent is just a choice, I personally hardly ever use solvent and use a blending stick by Caran D'Ache, but all the solvent does is dissolve the pigment allowing for it to either blend better with other coloured or completely fill the tooth of the paper, ensuring you never get those little white speckles of paper showing through. But it is personal choice and not all Colored Pencil artists use solvent, a dry blending stick or a white pencil can do just as good a job. I hope I have helped answer your question and again thank you so much for your kind comment and for subscribing, I really appreciate all the suppor

      @ForeverLumoz 7 років тому +2

      Again, thank you for your time! I have written nothing I don't mean 😄 Your answer is very very helpful. So far I haven't been using solvent, but I see it catching on here on UA-cam and I just didn't understand why. So many absolutely amazing artworks looking perfect with "just" pencils. As you do, I also use a paper blender. It seems easier for me this way, because I fear the solvent doesn't go well with my bad hand. Meningitis sort of rearranged my brain and nerve system 7 years ago.... Made quite a few things a bit more difficult. Liquid and a shaking hand isn't to good a mix, especially around such quality paper 😁😁
      Can't wait for more videos ✍👍

    You are my go-to person for reliable reviews of any art products. That is why I looked for this review.
    Recently I heard that FC Polychromos that say “Germany” on them are made in the USA and have more issues with the leads being broken or coming out because of not being glued to the wood and that those that say “Made in Germany” are actually made in Germany and of better quality. Have you heard this? Is this fact or fiction?

    I was actually suppriced to find out you hadn't alredy done this review. You have pretty much covered all the brands Ive been currious about and/or bought. :D
    Pretty much only the Hollbeins left (and my my, are they pricey!!!)
    Polychromos does in my oppinion have the best price/performance ratio of the most famous brands in Europe. They just deliver with no fuss and no problems what so ever.
    Anyone can pick them up and use them, regardless of what level of skills and ambitions you got, and you won't get limited in your growth and development by lacking abilities of the pencils. This is quite an old video of mine so the audio and video quality isn’t the best. However, every Christmas I create three different wish lists, a luxury list detailing the products and I normally add about 10 or 15 products in each list. Then I create a budget list and finally an accessories list, almost like a stocking filler list. Sometime I add a fourth list with just colored pencil sets.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Felicia, the pastel pencils, regardless of brand are always a bit harder and chalky in comparison to pastel blocks or cylinders, especially the handmade ones.
      With regards to paper for Pastel Pencils, unfortunately, especially because you are new to pastels, you will needs a sanded type surface to get the very best performance from the pastel pencils or at the very least some Ingres paper.
      When I first started out with pastels, I used Ingres paper as it was cheaper, but I had a terrible time and stop pastel pencils for a bit. Now there are amazing Pastel Pencil artists out there who use Ingres paper and create the most amazing work, people like Colin Bradley here on UA-cam.
      However, when I started using paper like Pastelmat, UART or the new Lux Archival paper, I just found the entire process so much easier and so much more enjoyable.
      Sometimes Mixed Media papers can be a very good option, in fact I have just reviewed paper by Clairefontaine called Paint On, I will be uploading it to my channel soon, but this paper is amazing for pastels. The o OU thing about Ingres Papers or Mixed Media is once you have completed your art you will need to either spray a final fixative or frame it behind glass because otherwise when you move the paper, every time a little bit of pastel dust will fall off and the more you move it the less you will have on your picture.
      Some excellent pastel artists that you could watch for tips is Colin Bradley, Emma Colbert, Gayle Sibly and Jason Morgan

    Hola, pois aqui no Brasil o Polychromos de 120 unidades en caixa de lata no tienen el sello, en cada lápiz, SV GERMANY, apenas, MADE IN GERMANY, al desaparecer el sello SV en cada lápiz en mi modesto entender queda claro que el lápiz no posee la devida garantia SV GERMANY.

    Love your videos, keep up the good work. Would you say the Koh-I-Noor polychromos are comparable to the FC polychromos?

    i think in 120 set many identical looking colors are there say for example middle pthalo ,light thalo and pthalo for both green and blue all are similar you can use pthalo green or pthalo blue alone will get similar results also greys in polychromos are not that good like prisma's.So my advice is 60 set plus medium and light flesh,cinnamon,ivory,terracotta,nougat,bistre,caput mortum and caputmortum violet,burnt carmine ,dark sepia and paynesgrey are ideal cobination and pretty much complete set
    Metallic colors are incredibly hard and useless in polychromos.

      Coloured Pencil Reviews Harry, I hear ya! Sorry you had a bad week. 😢 Art definitely helps. It helps to dull that pain signal going off in our brains. Doesn't take it away, but does help to cope in a more positive way. Not only that it helps us to feel productive. I know if I let the pain get to me, it gets really ugly in my head. It's hard to do anything else with the pain screaming in our heads to pay attention to it. I used to say that chronic pain is the newest but horrible monster family member addition. 👪+👾=chronic pain family (I didn't have a monster emoji...lol). It can effect everyone. Art helps to curb that monster. If you need to talk you know where to find me. I am sending you positive vibes to feel better my friend. 🤗

    Hi Harry, Came here thru Smoothie77 and I think you did a great job on this review.
    My thing on these Polychromos is that they are round, I hate this because I work on a slope so I never buy round pencils because they keep falling down and breaking insite :( .
    I think they made a big mistake there, but furthermore, I have some Fabers around and love working with them ;)
    all the love from Holland - Lineke

      Lineke Lijn Thank you so much for stopping by my channel, Smoothie is an awesome UA-camr and artist, his watercolours are amazing and when I have a bit of spare money I'll be treating myself to one of his paintings. Any way I know exactly what you mean with regards to the round pencil as opposed to the hexagonal. I know they are totally different pencils, but the Faber Castell Watercolor pencils are hexagonal and although they are not like Polychromos they are still awesome pencils that when used just dry creat some amazing work and they have exactly the same colours as the Polychromos. Any way, thank you so much for stopping by and dropping a comment and I look forward to hearing from you again.

    I want these but I just can’t bring myself to spend $473 NZD on the 120 tin ($799 for the wood box!).... it is “only” $99 box/$129 tin for the 36 set and $218 for the 60 tin....and even that is ouchie... even tho I spent that much $120+ on my Neo2 40s and Inktense 36.... I have a 120 Creyart set that I got for $40 and they might have to do... but I want these!!..... (and I have full set syndrome so it’s hard, lol). Same with Copics... would be nearly $5k!! For the full set... I have 40 but I decided to spend $400 instead on the full 48 set of SN Triblends instead but I probably should have just gone full Copic 😂😂😂 I hate the fact I watch all these videos obsessively... I just want it all... even tho I can’t actually draw ... I’m a buyer, not a user 😜

    I've gotten some individually to have extra skin colors and well did anyone have the issue where you could clearly see pigments of different colors in the lead?

  • @askialuna7717
    @askialuna7717 7 років тому

    Hi,
    I bought a set of polycromos and have a question.
    Is it normal that I can not use the Polycromos Purple tones to draw a dense closed area?
    It becomes uneven so small dark and bright dots and I push the pigments away and I get it therefore not intensively.
    Looks like drawn with a cheap colored pencil .
    Unfortunately also on nostalgia paper of Hahnemühle.
    I have the problem with Magenta Hell 119, Red Violet Light 135, Karmosin 134, Mangan Violet 160 and Violet 138 and a few more.
    I am just making a color chart and could still write when it appears in other colors.
    I find this at 134, 160, 138, 114 and the individual 141, which from the set has it not so intensiv.

    if you had to choose between poloychromos 120 or pablo 80

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 років тому

      Derick Elsner oh what an excellent question but such a hard question. When I first seen this question, I had to look through the Caran D'Ache Pablo color chart for the 80 set. I had to get my Pablos out and use them along with my Polychromos. My answer is of course, please let me have them both lol, but if I really really had to chose just one, it would be the Pablo 80 and only just. I love my Faber Castell and would hate to lose them, but under this question I would for 80 Pablos.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      MaltLiquor45 I use either the Derwent Superpoint Manual hand crank Sharpener or I recently purchased an M&R round solid brass Sharpener that works amazing. I am going to be uploading a video on sharpeners soon but I will say this. With the exception of the Derwent Superpoint, when looking for a good Sharpener stick with the German brands, M&R or KUM. KUM do an awesome sharpener as well called a long point Sharpener and it works well. If you type into eBay or Amazon the names I've given you will see a range of them or if you want to wait, I hope to have a video up very soon. Or even better, a friend of mine on UA-cam Smoothie77 has just done a video on sharpeners, check out his video and let him know in the comments that I sent you there and he will help you out. Hope this has helped.

      The Art Gear Guide Lisa is a fantastic artist but I had to give up on her videos sadly. She speaks so incredibly fast it is stressful and too much to follow. I did very nicely put a comment to this effect but had no response. I did try turning the sound off but there were no subtitles.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 років тому +1

      Lisa does talk fast but I think even she knows this, but like you say, if you can't understand the videos then there is no point. I get plenty of people emailing me telling me that they think I talk too much or they don't like my accent and so they can't watch my videos either. I guess it is just a thing people on UA-cam either live with or try to fix. I have tried to limit my talking on my videos but unfortunately there is not much I can do about my accent lol but I can equally understand why people don't like it, I don't like my accent lol.

    • @capyboppy
      @capyboppy 7 років тому +3

      The Art Gear Guide your accent is great :-). I love the pace of your videos too. I don't want to come across as being horrible about Lisa, but how can anyone learn and absorb new things when it is spoken at a pace like a cannonball? She is so talented and interesting and has such a lot to bestow on us lesser art mortals it is a shame. Maybe if she could imagine she was doing it as a public speaking event? :-). I once saw myself on very rare footage doing BSL. I was horrified at how fast this was. This wouldn't normally matter if I was totally fluent and it was my first language; but as an ongoing learning process I was horrified. I now make sure I think to myself I am 'making a video with important news' so it is accessible to all, and it works well. But everyone is different and I accept that 👍😜
