the luminance pencils are wax based - so they are kind of the "high end"-version of the prismacolor premiers - and they are a perfect match to the faber castell polychromos which are oil based, harder, better for details.
I am heavy-handed, and find I go through the Luminance too quickly. I also like the feel of them, and I think the pigment cores are thicker. I do think they are more fragile than the Polychromos. In your excellent sundae, the Luminance side looks like it has broken down a little. I think the desired effect needs to determine the brand! I've been frustrated by my difficulty in layering Poychromos, although part of the problem is my heavy approach! I break Prismacolors too easily. They are so waxy I mark them with dents too easily as well. Thanks very much for this comparison. I feel I can go forward with more carity now.
I have the luminance set of 40. My spouse bought them for me for birthday at my request. I used prismacolor before this for years and I absolutely love the luminance set. Hands down the best colored pencils. I don’t get the wax bloom issues I did with prismacolor, and they blend superbly.
I have the Polychromos though i never use the luminance. I wish to get it one day😍. I find the Polychromos so good at maintaining its lead. Took me quite a few more layers and then sharpen it. They’re inconsistent, like the cream color was buttery while the copper was abrasive. I use them with my Derwent lightfast and i find that the Polychromos black is shimmery under bright light compared to the Derwent even though they’re both oil based. I heard that the Derwent lightfast is comparable to the luminance. So if one prefer an oil paint look, I’d suggest to get the luminance or the Derwent lightfast👍
The luminance lays down as a nice flat colour. You can get a little wax bloom with them. But they're a very good pencil. I have the Derwent Lightfast on my wishlist 😍
I saw the Caran D'Ache Luminance on Amazon for $205. It was the big set, so I am not sure if it was original. Thank you for sharing it, Gemma! :) I subscribed for my art learning journey!
I have the full set of polychromos and a 20 set of Luminance pencils. I plan on buying more luminance pencils open stock since I don’t want to pay $100+ dollars for only 40 pencils.
Have you tried either of these pencil brands? Which would you recommend and why?

Thank you! You just saved me a lot of money…I have full sets of FC Polychromos and Prismacolor. Love the Polychromos and I rarely use the Prisma!

They're so good aren't they! I find Prismacolor to be terrible for wax blooms, very frustrating.
Just ordered a 40 set of the luminance pencils, should arrive in a few day. Thank you for a honest review.
I hope you enjoy them!!
Which sharpener do you use for the Luminance ?
I would like to see an in depth with the Pablos

Really interesting comparison video thank you!! 😊
So happy you found it interesting 😊
very interesting video, I do not have the Luminance but they are on my wishlist!
Thank you 😊 They're very good pencils!!
Really interesting and useful video, thanks. I did have to to mute it and watch with sub-titles because of the background music.
I like them both and often use them together, but I think the luminance wins by a little
Better comparison would of been Caren D ache Pablo vs Polychromos

Yea, I have to agree, it's the best way to buy these pencils. You have total control on which colours you're getting that way too.
Very different animals
