I agree with your reel speed statement. 💯 Another great video! Tight lines and can't wait to see more tournament videos B.Lat! You definitely spreading knowledge and honestly you are one of the more humble guys I've seen. 🤘🏻
I've been using the Lew's Tournament Pro reels for a couple years now and I absolutely love them! They are very comfortable in my hand...Also they have the best brakes I've ever used on a baitcaster! The brakes are very quiet and I almost never backlash, plus they are externally adjustable...I have a few Lew's Tournament MP reels, they are comfortable also and they cast well but It has the half centrifugal half magnetic brakes and I do not care for it...The brakes are super loud unless I lube the brass ring but then they barely work...
This is one of my go-to baits for redfish when they are not wanting to bite. Sometimes I fish it with a trailer hook if they are short striking. The inline DieZel works well as well. The speed is definitely important lest it rips right out of the fishes mouth.
Inches per turn is what I care about more than gear ratio. A 26-30 inch per turn reel is my go to for a chatterbait. I like a 26” since I can also use a spinnerbait on it
B-Lat tell me is a 4-7-1 gear radius too slow for chatterbait? Or is that just too slow for any lure. Yes I do have that Colorado 300 gear ratio 4-7-1. on everything is that too slow to be dealing with?
Love your videos and watch them all the time always informative and fun. If I could just fish for a day with any pro my first choice would be you, not just for what I could learn but you just seem to make it fun. On a different train of thought…. I fish as a “co angler” i don’t own a boat. I would love some help on how to build a day box (bag with 5-8 boxes). I have a problem deciding what to carry and which rods to carry when I don’t know where we’ll be fishing. I always want to carry everything and wind up with so much crap under my feet I can’t move and my rods are all tangled up 🤬 I was figure over your career you have probably had co anglers so thought I’d put that idea out to someone I trust to teach me. Thought it might be a good video idea.
Hey Mr Latimer excellent video I knew I was using to fast of a reel in the past and I also think that is doesn't look right to the bass when that particular bait is flying by them to fast and when you're going slower your bait is in the water longer and you have way more power than a faster gear ratio reel . I was watching a similar video where Gerald swindle was talking about how he uses mostly all 6.8 reel's lews is the company I like I'll have to pick one up for my chatterbait fishing. Thanks for the time you spend making these videos so we all can become better anglers. God bless you and your family
You know I'm here for it. Love the chatterbait when fishing early spring when the bottom is full of seaweed and algae I'll roll it right above the seaweed and algae and wait for the reds to pop out and pound it.
Why I get glued to the tournament pro. That 6.8 is perfect for most everything. I even like jigging. That 6.8 is fast enough, but still has plenty of power.
Found one of my old top of the line reels and the Raton was 4.8:1. Some now are more than doubled. Although I still like the extra slow reels fishing rattle traps, spinner and crank baits in the winter when the fish are moving a little bit slower. Like me now all the time
I agree Brian, I fish my chatterbaits of course the jackhammer. I fish it on a daiwa steez 6.31 on a St.croix legend glass rod..Rod medium heavy 7'4...WOW what a blast..No dinks allowed..7lbs and up..The lew's tournament pro is a great reel..I have 3..LOL
I love the new baby Bluegill color from Zman!! I have noticed a major decline in my pond on Chatterbait bites bc I fished them so much for a few years. I’ve switched to the big blades and the smaller version with some success. Appreciate ya! Will you be at the classic? If so I’ll bring you a Big D’s Crawler (my first garage made bait).
I know this is a year old video.. But would a 6.2.1 Spinning reel work for a Chatterbait? I prefer spinning setups. Ive had a lot of success with the Minimax and Evos but if im less than ideal and wasting opportunity I'd switch it up.
I love the videos man but... I have to disagree on one aspect. For me, I'm a kayak angler and that has a lot to do with all of my rod/reel choices. For me, I need at least a 7spd, maybe even an 8spd for Chatterbaits and other moving baits like that. Kayaks get pulled towards baits when we fish, I need that speed to keep up with that constant pull towards the bait. Additionally, I need to catch up to that fish on hooksets when I get pulled even faster towards the fish. Does that make sense?
It does! This is a perspective that not many people understand. It’s the very reason I talk about kayak fishing being the absolute hardest way to fish.
5:8.1 with a 28" line recovery for jigging is what I prefer and for most everything it's just impossible finding high end reels with that gear ratio. 5:4.1 with a 28" line for recovery for cranking is another I like just can't get reel manufacturers to wake up .Only two anyone needs I believe ! 100% right about slowing down I really think it's why many People loose hook ups and less bites
Yeah if you're only cranking, if I'm flipping or buzzbait I want a 7 to 8 at least. I've fished tournaments for 30 years and I've never heard of anyone past 1990 fishing with a 5 only
Great content I've struggled with the chatterbait Question for everyone what weight chatterbait is the best I know conditions matter but if you could only have one would it be 3/8 or 1/2 oz and what color
What are your needs? What do you fish? What type of cover? What type of baits do you fish? Where do you live? What species are you fishing for? That’s all relative to the angler. A guy that lives on lake st Claire has a different 5 than a guy in Florida. So first think about where you are and your needs
Quantum Pulse 6 to 6 to 1. Crank or Chatterbait. Even a Spinnerbait. Are you fishing or racing a fish. Let the fish get caught. 8 to 1 for Jig fishing or fishing Matt's. Shawn.
great tournament!!!!!! Clarks hill the real deal.. don't read no more lol lol March Carolina River all I will say on reel and rods funny pb 12.4 murray with 5500c and broom stick lol 1994 u trow a 5500 and broom all day want be 4 day tournament why u think back then 3 day was nornal lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Man said I have three kids cause I couldn't slow down. On a real note he is very correct if you need to slow down or speed up your presentation. Time to get the correct gear ratio reels you will be more consistent on your presentation.
And will rise even more with Elaztech as a trailer…… Hate to say it, but 13 Fishing had one chance to impress me and I bought a dud with that green abomination. Very disappointed with that reel.
“I have 3 kids cause I couldn’t slow down” lmao
4 here buddy. 😆
Classic 😂
I have a 6 to 3 to 1 spinning reel. Will that work also
🤣😂🤣
@@richardraabe2789 he said yes just nothing lower than 6. Good luck 👍
"I got 3 kids cause I couldn't slow down" 😂you got me fucked up
B Lat thanks for continually blessing us with great content and tips for fishing.

Hey B Lat is 6:5 gear ratio good for a chatterbait @@BrianLatimerFishing

Great video. You brought up a lot of points on reel speed that not many people ever think about.
Thanks for the great information. I’m a newbie to Bass Fishing and really want to learn more!

I use a 7.0:1 gear ratio, and it works great for me.
Your so right I 100 percent agree it works thanks again for your help. Can’t wait for the next school video.
You are so welcome
I have an old Fritts bass pro cranking reel. 4.7:1 gear ratio. Works great for those big & deep crankbaits.
Gear ratios matter.

Going to have to go get my pen and notebook and revisit this entire series. Class is in session

Brian, What 3-5 rod and reel combinations cover the majority of bass fishing needs.

thanks so much, your stuff is so Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blat smart as hell
While we talking about chatter bait, tell zman we want a June bug jackhammer. Ty :)
What's the best knot to tie for a chatter bait
Do you use a smaller or larger chatter bait?
Do you ever use braid to leader for a chatter-bait or for any bait?
I would never use braid with a chatterbait
My guy B Lat 🔥
Can you use a spinning rod for chatter bait question?
I do
Absolutely! It’s not ideal but you certainly can
How ya like that 13 a3?
Still hoping to fish with you one day on the boat in SC!
Enjoyed the video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Just crushing it, Thanks!
You are the man

B-lat layen down the truth and awesome tips … thank you sir for this video
You bet
LOL LOL HA HA! That's real. What you doing that slowing down takes the fun all the way out of it Wow. Did I do that.
Give me a crosseyez with a 6.3:1 when water temp is dropping or 6.8:1 when water temp is rising. Such a fun bite
Amen
Thanks for your response I don’t have the money right now to buy a bait caster and reel
I wish I did
I use a spinning reel with spider wire smooth for chatter bait
Got a Lews tournament pro white in color 6:3:1
