Does anyone ever give one thought to left-handed writers? Without a spiral, I am holding the Scripture side down with my writing arm, so that I have to keep moving my hand to see what to comment. With the spiral it's much the same. I don't have to hold the journal open; but, I have to write with my hand lifted over that big spiral. All my life! One time, about the eighth grade, I found a composition book designed for lefties. I was grateful. I don't expect the Bible publishers will cater to so few. I'm accustomed, by now. My signature looks freakish when I sign most registers at funerals or weddings, since I almost never get to sign on the back side of a page. My choice is a difficult one. I'd choose the lay-flat non-spiral, and put them collectively in a three-ring binder as I complete them.

I specifically bought the new spiral bound version of the Psalms for prayer journaling. I like that it lays flat, and I prefer that with any kind of journal.

Great job! Congrats to Crossway publisher. That is an amazing idea. I love the spiral. So practical. Thank you for producing these journals for the Bible. I have the impression they will be successful because they are practical. What a nice way to read a Bible book and journal it. God bless you and keep it up!

I was at Crossway a few months ago, and they mentioned the spiral-bound edition coming out. One of the reasons for moving towards spiral-bound was due to popular demand and because the binding of the older version was coming apart over time.

In our church's spiritual formation classes, I teach from these and use the spiral-bound versions because they lay flat. Both are great, however, it is much easier to teach and read from the spiral-bound.

Left handed here…spiral notebooks are generally not my friend, so I’ll probably get the regular bound. Loved the comparison though!
As a side note: if I could reverse the pages on the spiral and have the blank pages on the left and the Scripture on the right I would 100% go spiral!

Tim Nichols mentioned in a recent video that the ESV is probably going to be doing yet another update on their translation. So, I’m personally sticking with the NKJV, Thomas Nelson Bible Journals. ( But I did purchase the big spiral ESV. Too late to return. Wish Crossway told us about a new revision, before they put out their larger spiral. I’ll still use it for Women’s Bible Studies, which are many times geared towards the ESV version). Thx Tim and Becka. Those are very nice! No potato chip clip needed to hold it open. lol! ❤

The non-spiral ones are elegant and most likely readily functional but I'd go with the spiral bound variant. My most important reason for that preference has to do with dispositional traits - I like to work with as little "in front of me" distractions as possible and I think it would really annoy me to have to hold the book open with my off hand while writing. If it weren't for that, I'd go with the elegant volumes.

Nice review and Becca does such a good job at complementing this show. I love them both but I am like you Tim and I like the bound version over the spiral agreeing with all the things you mentioned. The spiral bound looks sturdy but I remember in school with continual transport the spirals would get bent or crushed making it difficult to turn pages. I am thinking with repeated use, the pages in the spiral bound would eventually start to tear out. I would love to eventually get the bound ones for our men's bible study, instead of having a separate notebook or loose paper used for note-taking.

I have slipcase set. They do separate from binding with use. Also, they thicken up with writing and the full set no longer fits in slipcase. Despite these issues and issues with ESV as a translation, overall I enjoy the set. I’m ordering Psalms in the spiral to give this format a try. Great review as always!

I would love a modern version of a loose leaf. One you can add more pages into. These are great but there simply isn't enough room for many of us to write, draw diagrams etc. I want a mega study version where you can insert your own charts or note pages so you can have one big comprehensive place to put your study notes and keep adding to it over a lifetime. I have soooo many notebooks filled with bible study notes, it's crazy. I wish I could just combine them all into one.

Oh my! I have long loved the originals, but I think tht the large multi-book volumes would be my choice for spiral-bound, keeping the sewn editions for individual books. I haven't bought the Poetic Books or The Gospels yet, but that is only because I am trying to catch up using the books I have this month. I'm looking forward to weeing what Becca does with those.

I'm also a lefty but have surrendered to a world where obviously I'm in the minority when it comes to spiral bound notebooks, especially if I find it annoying to rest my writing hand on the spiral. It is awkward but I just deal with it. I just love the individual Bible books in Scripture journal format, with or without spirals, mainly because I can tote my favorites like Ephesians or Romans, and just read them for all they're worth without feeling obligated whatsoever to write in them although it's difficult not to write in them.

Here’s what I dream of: I want the size of the new Journaling editions (8.5x11) but the format/block of these individual journals. I love the size of the journaling Bible volumes, but I vastly prefer having a full blank page next to each page of scripture. Just make an A4 size spiral-bound interleaved edition! That would satisfy me, though maybe no one else would want it.
