I am 72. So, I kew my great-grandmother, who came across the US in a covered wagon as a child. My grandmother lived through the depression. I knew both women. For years, I heard don't get rid of it, you never know when you are goung to need it. Result-lots of clutter. When I moved 1750 miles from them, those voices finally began to lose their hold. Watching you and your sister have helped me donate 8 large trash bags of clothes, 2 large bags of towels and blankets to a no kill shelter, and I have no clue on how many boxes. And, I am not done yet! THANK YOU to both you and your sister.

Our Great Grandmas weren't wrong, they were survivors! They just didn't live in the world of plenty that we do today. We can also give ourselves grace for getting in an overwhelmed situation, because people have not evolved to handle being able to acquire stuff so easily. I guess it's what we're doing now, watching these videos, evolving. God bless everyone.

I totally agree! So much of what Sherry said resonated with me. From this series with Sherry, I have become aware of my own process for letting go of things. Sometimes, it has taken a couple of pass-throughs. Also, I've observed that I am less sentimental about things as I get older.

The vacation rental experience is such a good way for people to see what it’s like to live with less! My journey started when we were staging our home for sale and we packed up so much of our stuff down to bare bones to make our 1000 sq ft home seem bigger and put it in storage. We lived like that for 3 months and when we got to our new house we had about 30% of the storage so that made it so much easier on us to downsize. We love it and have continued to routinely declutter. I loved this. It’s so generous of Sherry to share this vulnerable side with us. So many great points - just do 20 min. At least it’s something. Oh and that the pain of making a mistake and regretting one of the items you declutterred is not worth the pain of NOT decluttering at all.

Another decluttering youtube channel utilizes small wins, like the top of a dresser, skincare and makeup because the expired and broken get tossed easily, small and not sentimental, etc. Doing those short tasks will get you on the roll to do the harder stuff

Over Presidents Day long weekend, I got rid of 2 large black bags and 2 regular trash bags full of clothes and almost half of my shoes. I downsized 5 years ago from 1600SF to 805SF & I did get rid of a lot of furniture & decor then, but didn’t keep going with declutterring. Thanks Carla for showing me how to get started again😊😊

"Where will all this stuff go when I go?" At 72 I look at my possessions as a burden and not a gift to my children. I have asked if they want something, i.e. furniture, clothing items, Kitchen items and if they say "No, not really" then that brings me to the harsh reality that it will probably go to Goodwill, so why bother holding on to it. I gave away my mother's silver set to the daughter of a friend who wanted it. I will also be getting rid of the dining set that I don't really like and my kids don't want. Instead, I plan to have something for my later years that I truly enjoy.

Now I don’t have to think because I only hav a few outfits to choose from. Finally got my husband to clean his closet out. He had shirts that were 30 years old. He loves his closet now. In fact he stated that he needs to go through it again. Love your channel. Your positive attitude and your beautiful smile are contagious. Your sister is precious. You both have a calming voice

I wish you would talk more about going through the family home. My father is 89 and a self declared pack rat. On top of that, he has an irrational fear of someone breaking in and stealing stuff, so he hides things... and at his age forgets where he put them. So where I would just toss the 200 coffee cans he has saved because they are "useful", I can't until we have checked every single one to make sure its empty. He refuses to work with me now to declutter and tells me I can do it when he's dead, except he lives 600 miles away and I will have to spend a month away from my home in order to deal with his house. Oh, and when my mom passed 15 years ago he refused to go through her stuff. Every single thing of hers is still in that house... every personal care product, every clothing item, EVERYTHING. So sorting through their house will bring back all the pain of her death at the time I'm trying to cope with my father's death... and all while I have to spend weeks from home away from my own family and pets. I'll take any tips you've got for dealing with parents' possessions! My dad has prostrate cancer, bone lesions, COPD, thyroid issues, etc so its just a matter of time before I have to contend with this challenge. Carla, how old were you when you helped deal with your parents home? And I have 12 years between me and my only sibling and we too have discussed how we feel like we had totally different parents growing up because they had changed so much by the time I was born.

@@TheCarlaProject Thanks girl! I've been loving the series with Sherry! You can tell how much more comfortable you are with helping her declutter than the other Declutter with Friends vids. You give her that look that says it all! LOL But seriously, like you said in this video you can hear it in her voice, and that just comes from knowing someone that well. My house stays tidy and I have no problem purging most things like clothes or kitchen items. I have 2 areas that are my kryptonite... craft supplies and school work/art/writing that my (almost 23 yo) son ever did, as well as all the accolades he got in school. I am blessed to have lots of closets, and 1 whole closet is dedicated to all his school work (yeah, I kinda saved EVERYTHING). My parents never saved anything of mine from childhood so I've overcompensated by saving school stuff, favorite toys, and some clothing of his. Hoping a future episode involves a crazy, sentimental mother. 😅 Can't wait for the next Q&A!!!

@@maddscientist3170 Oh that's awful!!! I am thankful that get along well with my brother and sister in law, and know they will do what they can when the time comes. I'm 53 and it seems like an overwhelming task, so I can imagine the stress it would be on you at 75. Aside from cash hidden in the house, I am confident there is nothing of significant monetary value in my parent's house, so I'm not sure I could get an estate sale company to even take the job. I wish you luck getting this resolved, and I'll say a prayer for the granddaughter. My heart goes out to your family! Hugs!

I agree with your sister's sentiment of having faith that what you need will be provided...I had faith that people would only take what they needed during the pandemic so as not to take away from the needs of others. And indeed, we had enough to get by just fine without hoarding anything. Both my parents passed before the pandemic, but as they aged, they also became hoarders, with all kinds of expired food stored in the garage along with boxes and boxes of stuff they hadn't unpacked from when they moved to their home 15 years earlier. One of the reasons I adopted a more minimalist mindset was having to clean out my parents' home after they passed. I didn't wish that task on anyone, so decided to take care of my own stuff.

I found myself at my favorite thrift store every month during the first day of my period. I would be there for 2 or 3 hours with cramps and terrible leg pain. I finally realized that it was some weird chemical/hormonal thing in my brain driving me to impulsively and compulsively thrift shop on the worst day of the month. A few things that really helped me to stop over shopping for clothing was adding how much I spent one year. I had to do it for tax purposes and I had spent $10,000 in one year. I was horrified and I could have gone to Europe with my friends. I started to learn to get that dopamine rush by decluttering my closet instead of getting it by filling up my closet. I just switched what would give me the rush I craved hehe!! I’m in my 50s now so also what I liked wearing has changed a lot from when I was in my 40s and so that also helps me to both declutter long loved items and also helps me to curate what I buy. And also the main thing is I like to wear things that make me look slimmer 😂, so I tend to wear simple classic looks and black at the bottom 😂 and simple colors or designs at the top hehe!!

Something that is really helped me is keeping a cardboard box for donations in one or two spots in the house so that if I do come across something that I’m not using, I can immediately put it in the donation box. Those items can add up quickly, even outside of a decluttering session.

Carla, you are an inspiration! Hearing the grace and love you share for each other in this conversation has reminded me to extend the same to my grandmother. In fact, I’m spending a week with her to sort through things as she prepares for an estate sale. This is the first of many weeks I expect to spent. A typical estate sale is 2 days, and the estate sale business says hers will be at least 4 days. That gives you an idea of the sheer volume of stuff. My grandpa was a hoarder, and my grandma is a collector of all crafty things and yet their entire life they’ve consuming the stuff and sadly, never spent their time enjoying their hobbies, just managing the stuff. The next challenge is that her tendency is to try and offload the emotional value of an item onto another family member because she can’t fathom selling something that might have sentimental value. Eek!

I helped my neighbor clean out his hoarded home. He believed everything he owned was top of the line, of great value, and had to go to a good home. He hated to throw things away or donate them. He offloaded a good portion to supposedly grateful recipients. I had to spend a great deal of time in every sorting session trying to persuade him that in donating an item, it would, in fact, end up blessing the buyer. Hoarders can't seem to be able to see that stuff is just stuff. They can't see that it was a waste of money, that it has depreciated, that it is broken or missing parts and useless, or that it is dated and out of fashion. Material possessions are beyond sentimental to them. They are almost like pets or children and they seem to feel guilt and shame in releasing them to anything less than a good home with a recipient who knows how fortunate they are to receive it. Just a side note about hoarding. It's great progress that Sherry is recognizing the wasted money and realizing she values other intangible things above stuff. I'm working thru similar things.

    • @karenpage9383

@Scoobich I feel your pain! In your case, it would actually be easier to sell off everything after they have both passed. In terms of her passing things on to family... if it gets stuff out of the house, I say let her pass it on, but talk to those family members and give them permission to donate the stuff and not be burdened themselves. I think we can all benefit from your story and use it as a reminder to actually use the things we have collected for a hobby, or pass them on to someone who *will* use them!

Loved this calm discussion about Sherry's clutter journey and all the insights she's gained. And your sister bond is so beautiful to witness. I especially loved when Sherry said No! to giving you control to change her home. 😂 And all the memories about your parents' home. I had the same parents in immigrant form. Thank you for letting us into your home, Sherry! And thank you, Carla, for doing this series.

Wow, that was so deep and insightful. I think loads of people will take at least one insight away from that. If Sherry hadn't said what she did for a living I would have thought she was a counsellor because the understanding she has gained of herself is incredible and the way she articulates it is brilliant. I'm taking away that it is ok to make mistakes when decluttering, and if you let something go you wish you hadn't it is just part of the process. Love you two working together, both such lovely and fun people. My favourite bit was the conspiracy theory, your laughing together had me laughing too. xx

Carla and Sherry I just love your relationship.🥰 It just makes me wish again that I had a sister or even a brother. It can be lonely being an only child but I’m very used to it at this age. Decluttering can be a difficult journey but it is that much more difficult when you have family members that don’t agree on decisions. My husband and grown son are not as near on board as I’d like. If it was up to me 90% of our belongings would be gone.😂😂😂

Sherry makes a good point about being sentimental about stuff. The past year, since I've retired, I've rehomed anything of value, sending items to family or friends that would appreciate them. I enjoy the sentimental items I have left and have a written plan of where they go should I pass.

What inspired me was having the experience of having to clear out my parents home after they passed, then my aunt’s home and then my brother’s home. That was so much work all those times. I decided not to do that to my sons. So I downsized and donated, trashed and gave away. I think of it as a gift to my sons and DILs. They could clear out my place one Saturday morning and would be done with it.

Sherry, I have no doubt you will continue on your journey and more than make up for the financial losses of the past. In other spaces I have watched the neat perfection of one day of cleaning - it first excites me but then exhausts me - your step by step focus is very helpful. What this 61 year old is thinking now is focus on what brings you the greatest joy - my garden and some creative work like sewing - clear the rest away.....a version of Swedish death cleaning goes through my head: would anyone else be interested in this thing....probably not is the usual answer! Maybe developing a stronger "why" in favour of walking would help Sherry.

My grandmother grew up during the depression. In her upbringing, everything had a purpose, whether to recycle or use. She could not dispose of anything..my mother followed in her footsteps..I know some of my mothers shopping was due to depression and after she passed, I honestly was astounded at the stuff with price tags stacked everywhere, and unfortunately I kept most of her stuff 😢. Honestly, I have now found myself doing the exact same thing. Everything can be used or recycled & my depression shopping from my hubby's passing last year has been out of control. I now I have shut myself off from shopping & trying to take 1 room at a time to declutter. It's overwhelming 😢

I don't think clutter is inherited in that sense. But it can be a sign of generational trauma. Not having enough. That is the case in my husband's family. His grandmother was a refugee, then they lived in the eastern block, where it was hard to get certain things and my husband still is completly panicy when we go low on something. Even if you can pick it up at the sore next door. It is hard.

Sherry, you need to set up a fund for your _roof repair_ and _kitchen remodel._
I don’t know how to do that, …can you set up an extra bank account for those repairs??
Start putting money in there on a regular basis.
You deserve it! You have worked so hard, you really do deserve it!
It would help with future decluttering as well.
Maybe you might think “should I buy this or should I take this $20 and put it in the fund?”
    Something like that.
I have a pile of clothes sitting out. On your first big clothes Declutter day, I also decluttered my clothes. And I had them all out ready for the trash. But I took half of them back into the house. I haven’t put them in my drawers, I promised myself that I will look at them one more time. But what I should really do is put them outside again and on the clothes trash day is put them out for good.
Basically, I can’t wear those clothes, so why do I keep them….??

Enjoyed the chat 😊. As an older person myself one of the red flags I noticed was after "fun" shopping when returning home & not opening the items because we actually didn't "need" any of it. I have always been the organizing type even as a kid I would organize my dad's tools or anything like Carla. My mom's sewing room ect. Still there's always more to learn, more to get rid of, & different systems to try. Hope both of your health goals are achieved this coming year :). Thanks for sharing 💕

In many cases the input is not the problem, but not having any training or mechanisms in place for the output is. So over the years if nothing is gotten rid of, well now you have a hoarded home. I've heard that the dopamine level is highest when you first see the item, so by the time you go to pay, the levels are way lower. Hopefully Sherry is seeing financial benefits of not buying so much now. Thanks for sharing!

I don’t purposely do any Amazon shopping (thrifter only) but when an ad comes up for a helpful gadget or bra, (my life’s quest)😖 I will pin it or put it in my cart. For all of the years that internet shopping has been around,I can count on one hand, the number of things that I have actually purchased. However, the act of pinning or putting it in my cart was strangely comforting, like it’s there if I ever change my mind so I’m good.🤭
