What is the Best Fasting Length For You (Individually) - Thomas DeLauer
There's major thing I want you to understand and take away from this video, and that is a very powerful acronym, and that is MAGIC. Ketone MAGIC to be specific. What that means is when you look at fasting, that's where all the benefits are, ketosis, and then MAGIC. Okay, so we've got the microbiome, we've got autophagy, we've got growth hormone, we've got insulin, and we've got calorie restriction. MAGIC. That is what we are going to focus on.
The first one I want to talk about is what's called a 12/12, 12 hours of fasting, 12 hours of eating, essentially known as time-restricted eating or time-restricted feeding.
    12/12 time-restricted feeding
Food awareness: I think a big, and often overlooked, benefit of the 12/12 model is its psychological aspect. When you are strict on your 12/12, it helps make you aware of what you are eating and also, at least in my experience, gives you the confidence and discipline boost to take on more ambitious dietary regimens.
“Gateway” TRF/IF: The confidence/discipline boost one gets from 12/12 is why I call it the “gateway” time restricted feeding/intermittent fasting.
Frequent protein boluses: For many, 12/12 might even be ideal because it permits you to take in protein in frequent moderate-sized boluses to optimize absorption.
Easy on the gut: Not everyone can take in large quantities of food at once.
Microbiota changes: Although high-quality human studies on 12/12 and the human microbiome have not been done, it’s appreciated that the microbiome is extremely dynamic and that bad gut bugs tend to be starved before good gut bugs. (see Li G. et al., below.)
    www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/...
The big benefit here is at 16 hours your pancreas gets a break.
    16/8 to 20/4 time-restricted feeding
Insulin vacation: Once you approach the 16-hour mark, you’re really giving your pancreas a break. Such “insulin vacations” can certainly stave off insulin resistance.
Light ketosis and fat-adaptation: As you well know, 16/8 to 20/4 hour fasting, especially coupled with low-carb, can induce/enhance ketosis and fat-adaptation. Again, in addition to the direct benefits of ketones and fat-adaptation, the adaptation process can make taking on longer fasts easier. In this way, fasting can be thought of as a “metabolic exercise.” As you train your fasting muscle, you get better at fasting and can reap the benefits of longer fasts.
Spontaneous caloric reduction: Time restricted eating beyond 16-hour fasts tends to induce spontaneous caloric restriction and, as a result, weight loss (see Tinsley, below).
No loss of lean mass or ability to gain strength: Studies suggest that time-restricted eating does not cause the loss of lean body mass or decrease a person’s ability to put on muscle (see Tinsley, below).
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    24-36 hour fast
Deeper ketosis: The longer you fast (until about 5-6 days), the higher your ketones go. We don’t know the thresholds for different benefits, but it’s likely that there are specific benefits to spending time in the 1.5 - 3.0 mM range. 24 - 36-hour fasting may get you there.
Greater benefit to microbiome: Possibility that longer fasts have greater gut health benefits for some.
    Autophagy! Need I say more…
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2...
    36-72 hour fast
    Yet deeper ketosis
    More autophagy: (see Alirezaei, above).
More weight loss: Because more spontaneous caloric restriction.
More growth hormone: (see Ho, above).
However, may lose lean mass: You are going to lose more lean mass to gluconeogenesis the longer your go. If you’re thin or a hard gainer, I wouldn’t go beyond 36 hours.
Anyhow, I broke down all the different kinds of fasts. We can break them down a little bit more if need be, just put it down in the comments section below, but I've got plenty of videos that dive into detail on prolonged fasting and short fasts. As always, keep it locked in here on my channel, I'll see you soon.

I had a hemorrhagic stroke 8 months ago when I was deep, deep into metabolic syndrome. Gout, chest pains, obese, the works. My doctor said “have you heard of intermittent fasting?” and explained a bit (he is very fit). I took the ball and ran with it. I did 16/8 immediately (hard transition but I was MOTIVATED to live) with a 24-36 hour fast every Sunday to Monday over a period of four months. When I ate, it was whole foods with an emphasis on plants, but I ate meat 2-3 times a week. Every fourth week I ate keto because it’s easier for me, and I needed the break. I was lucky I had no major deficits from the stroke so I started with basically stretching and light yoga to get moving. Rode the bike. Started hiking. Now I can hike up 2000 feet over 3 miles fasted, come down and have breakfast. Lost 75 pounds, and fit into my high school pants. You can see my abs. My bloodwork is excellent. I’m not in metabolic syndrome anymore, nor do I suffer from gout. I still take BP meds and Allopurinol because it’s been 7 months since my stroke. Yep, you read that correctly. 7 months. My doctor calls me his “clinical trial of one”. Fasting, eating whole food, and moving around works wonders. Oh, and I’m 53 so age shouldn’t matter. Start NOW.

I’m on a very low carb diet, I don’t know that I would consider it keto due to the fact that I’m not loading up on fats but basically only eating real unprocessed foods has been huge. The benefit of IF and a keto type diet combined is they seem to act as a safety net for one another. It works!

I’m on keto and IF to lose weight and reverse my type 2 diabetes. You are so right about starting at 12/12. At first i couldn’t handle longer fasts. I joined a restricted eating study and had to drop out. After a couple of months 12/12 just felt like regular eating, not fasting at all. Now I’ve upped my fasting and this time it is much easier to sustain.
    Here is my current schedule:
Sunday 12 hours eating Br at 6 A lunch at noon done by 6, 12 hours fasting til Monday 6A
Monday 12 hours eating 6,1, 6 then 12 hours fasting til Tues 6A
Tuesday 6A to noon. Then 18 hours fasting ti we 6 A
Wednesday 12 hours eating 6,1,6 then 12 hours fasting til Thurs 6 A
Thursday 12 eatining 6A to 6P then 18 hours fasting til noon Friday
Friday 6 hour eating window lunch at noon dinner done by 6P
Saturday from 6 pm Friday to 6 am Sunday 36 hour Fast

I decided to try the 24 hour fasting and only eat every 8AM and only consume about 800-1000 calories per day. I do lift (light ) weights, minor cardio and resistance training. In 4 days since, i lost 3 pounds and my visceral fat went down from 4.5- 4.0. Thanks for inspiring and educating people! God bless you and your family!

The only observation that I would make as feedback for improvement is about one thing that all youtubers do: avoid images of food on videos about fasting... most of us are doing fasting wile watching it an can be a little annoying...

    WOW AWESOME! 👍
I started fasting for the first time in October for healing reasons.
I did 72 hours I was blown away with the results, my eyes had so much moisture my skin looked shiny and my pain in my stomach was gone!
Already did Nov 72 hrs and will do December soon.
and this was my only chance to recover. doctors had no idea what was wrong.
So I changed everything to keto and fasting.

I do agree with his assessment that variations and fasting windows say 3 days a week a 24 hour fast maybe 2 days a week A168 and then 1 or 2 days a week depending upon how much weight you have to lose or how close you are to go to eat when ever you want those 1 or 2 days. He said that he had cut and cut and cut his carbs in his calories and was getting fatter and fatter because his metabolic rate dropped when he started to do diet variation the fat fell off and he was actually eating more but continuing till lose. We are met truly to fast and feast not just fast in restrict calories all the time

In reading through the comments one thing becomes abundantly clear- there's still a vast amount of confusion regarding optimal fasting. There's enough empirical, clinical and verified laboratory research evidence to realize there are absolute positive health/longevity benefits even with the shorter 16 hour fasts, but we're a long way from knowing precisely what type of fasting regiment is best for any given individual. So much depends on pre-existing conditions, age, etc. The good news is that the top researchers such as Sinclair, Patrick and others have really helped us to create our own personal nutritional/fasting/exercise game plan for maximizing current "best science" benefits. However, this requires a significant commitment to the continuous learning necessary. I'm thinking the people who have made that commitment are realizing incredible results, both present and future. It's a good time to be alive.

Great informative video. About 4 years ago, I went to one meal a day from Sunday to Friday ( 1-2 hour feeding window) with Saturday being a day where I relax the restrictions a bit, including a bowl of ice cream as my once a week indulgence. I also do a monthly 72 hour fast (water only) and I have eliminated bread, rice pasta and sugary drinks. I am not doing a purely keto diet, but more of a paleo diet with a keto 'bias'. I still add an orange and a banana to my green smoothies (spinach, kale, celery, cucumber). More energy, 23 pounds lost and excellent blood work with very low triglycerides (62 - 65 range). I am still tweaking things and will probably switch to full keto before my next health screening.

What I've found most interesting about fasting is that all my doctors seem to be very much against it. I've had them tell me it's a form of starvation and even considered an eating disorder. It's pretty frustrating, especially since my doctors have all confirmed I have insulin resistance and know how fasting affects insulin! I've learned more here on UA-cam in the last year than seeing specialists for two decades.
