I do the opposite of an advent calendar in November - for 24 days I put 1 tin or packet of food in a box. It really doesn’t have to be expensive. I start with my stock cupboard first and then add items to my weekly shopping. On the 1st December I take the box of food to my Salvation Army food bank. It’s amazing how much food there is in that box

I live in a small (less than 2,000) town in Ontario, Canada. I volunteer at the food bank and, each Christmas, our Lions Club donates incredible numbers of gifts and toys to young children and young teenagers. These are all new and geared to what the parents have asked for. On Christmas Day, the entire town is invited to our Town Hall for a full Christmas Dinner - FREE of charge. For those who are alone at Christmas, this is especially heartwarming. This doesn't necessarily have a lot to do with your video, Jane, but I wanted to do a 'shout-out' for this wonderful place I live!

I live in a small town in Australia (4,000 people).
Each year our local Community House invites people to fill a large cardboard box with basic food items plus a few Christmas goodies, during Advent. These boxes are distributed to people in need. Last Christmas 40 boxes were given out.❤

I donated my entire wardrobe, due to weight loss, this morning to a local charity shop that gives back to children in our community, battered women shelters and many more. It is a popular place that is run entirely on volunteers. While I was there, I picked up 3 books to give for Christmas.

We buy a tin or pack of dog or cat food or treats each week...then in December we take it all to the shelter or drop them in the collection box at one of the shopping centres. We are big animal lovers and with shelters being really full...its nice to make sure the animals aren't forgotten at Christmas 🎁 🐶 😺

I will do my Crisis donation, I pay for 3 "gifts" which means 3 people will get somewhere safe to stay, get hot food and a Christmas dinner, access to health and well being and lots of support. I donate one from me, one from my son and the final one as a "gift" to my mum who we lost in 1988 so this is my gift to her.

Hi Jane, I really enjoy your videos. You and Mike are my fantasy world of living in France. My two first cousins live in Nantes. My mother was born in France.
This year because of Hurricane Helene and Milton, there was much damage to Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. I am donating to Franklin Graham's Samaritan Purse, not only with money but also collecting warm clothing as our weather is now turning very cold at night, and the poor people who have lost their homes and possessions and are in need of everything. Please pray for them this holiday season.
I love this time of year!

What a wonderful video! I work on Thritmas all year long and by November I have a big basket full of gifts that I can give for so little money. (This helps me be independent and not have to ask my childern for financial help.) These are not "last minute" Amazon purchases but individually carefully thought out thrifted antique items. Yes, its takes a year to pull together, but it's so much fun! Thanks for a wonderful video.

we are involved with our local Dog Rescue centre, initially they had just 1 charity shop in the nearest town, they have now opened another 3 in the nearby towns in the past year, shows the sign of the times. I'm a collection point for items for the kennels and donations to the shops, my 90yr old Mum knits dog coats for the kennels. i stopped sending Christmas Cards a few years back and now make donations to charities instead. I agree on sorting toys out now not after Christmas, and clothes at the beginning of the season.

Hi Jane - I have been excitedly waiting for your "Christmas videos" to start and glad to catch this before I get off work today. I am going to purchase my last gift for a grand-daughter and last bits of food needed for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals on the way home today. If you have seen an uptick in viewing of your past holiday video's, that was probably me - I have watched all of them at least two or three making detailed notes, especially for my holiday meals. In the USA with the upcoming election and price increases I want to be done with every bit of gift/food shopping this weekend. I volunteer at my local church clothes closet and have been busy going through clothes, household items, etc. to pass on. Tell Mike hello and thank you for your very helpful video's - looking forward to more holiday videos and recipes. Angela Byrd - I am signed in under the doctors login at work.

My sister has her kids clear out outgrown toys and clothing about this time. Especially when they were little and they wouldn't know about original packaging and such the bought thrift toys. The kids loved it cause they got way more than they could have afforded. In fact, this gen z generation is really into thrift shopping for clothes too here in the Philadelphia area atleast. Its amazing really because i remember labels and new being the emphasis in the 80s and 90s.

A tip for a gift. A booklet with coupons for children, for example: staying up later, saying what kind of movie you can watch, sleeping in, breakfast in bed, a bowl of chips with a drink, not having to make your bed, not having to do a small chore of your choice, etc.
Children can also give this to their parents. walking the dog, also bringing breakfast in bed when they are old enough, a hug or kiss, washing the bike, making coffee and other small chores.
they were also allowed to swap with us. that was really fun. Only takes effort and little money.

I have started putting away each free item a local grocery store gives from time to time as well as buying on offer tins or toiletries . In early December will give it to a service that gives it to elders in need. I also cleared out nice clothes if my mum she will sadly not need anymore at this stage of her life and I also included a few accessories of my own that I have too much of and someone can use them as you say for occasions. We have a local charity called dress for success that provides women one interview outfit and one other outfit when they get a job so as to start them off well from shoes to a handbag and some toiletries. All included . I have donated unused toiletries to them as well as suits that no longer fit but are in style as they are classic and in good shape. Finally I have donated fancy dresses , costume jewelry and evening bags etc to a local charity that provides prom dresses to young teens for their proms for free. It’s a great declutter and someone can use instead of not being used and sitting in the house.

We’ve always donated to Goodwill and The Salvation Army as we’ve outgrown or stopped using things. I’ve also put old bikes, sporting gear, etc. that my boys have outgrown or stopped using in our back lane behind the house with a huge sign saying “free to good home” and it’s scooped up anonymously by anyone who needs it all. We also have an awesome local church that collects donations all year long, and then twice a year puts tables out on their lawn and signs saying “free, help yourself”…not everyone who needs help wants to go to thrift shops and the free giveaways help people to maintain their dignity and feeling like they’re part of the neighbourhood celebration. I also donated my wedding dress, old fancy dress, and all my bridesmaids dresses/accessories to a charity that collected wedding dresses for military brides….totally a national shame that our incredible men and women in the service are living so very close to the poverty line, but it’s so great to know that somewhere there’s a beautiful bride wearing it on her special day, while it’s still in style.

I always look at the books at charity shops or anywhere selling second hand books. I start to get my winter cloths out at the beginning of September and at that stage I decide what I want to keep and what needs to go. I load the charity bags into the car and donate them straight away. I also have a charity bag hung up in my bedroom all year round as it fills up I take it to the charity shop. I do the rounds of the charity shops at this time of year and also in about April and see what they are selling off before they clear the stock ready for the next season. I am quiet happy to store cloths I have bought for the next six months knowing I will wear them at the beginning of the next season.

"Just because you're frugal doesn't mean that you can't be generous". Absolutely. I am currently doing my pre-Christmas sort out, not much left to sort and pass on, in all honesty. My son's school has a sixth form where "business dress" is required. It's a grammar school in an affluent area, so people often think the children attending are from equally affluent families. Children travel to the school from quite a distance and many parents want their children to get the education the school offers but don't have the funds to afford uniform, school trips and books. There are regular appeals for second hand uniform and suits, skirts, etc and, as girls join in the sixth form, I have put aside the smart clothes I used to wear for work and no longer need. When my son was small, we used to prepare shoeboxes together for "operation shoebox" donations, but now tend to support local charities instead.

I really think most of us have too much these days. I've pared down Christmas, we used to have big family Christmases whilst my parents were still alive. We are all so far flung these days I often don't see family from one year to the next. We tend to meet overseas in the warmer weather to get together.
Many years ago there were so many of us, it became very costly, so we had a price limit of £1 for gifts for adults. It didn't matter where the gift came from and often they were sourced from charity shops. With my girls, we restrict the cost of gifts still. I'm still thinking about gifts this year. It's more about spending quality time with loved ones. We often are time poor. A good meal and to talk over the table for hours my idea of a great time.

A local woman in my area picks up new, donated fancy dresses from the better department stores and keeps a closet at one of the high schools so homeless students have formal wear for the special dances (Homecoming, Christmas Formal, Prom). They get to keep what they receive. Items are gathered for the young men as well. A teacher I worked with in Alaska had her friends send their old bridesmaid dresses and prom dresses to her and the older girls in our village were able to have a dress for prom. Because of the weather dresses are a rarity in the native villages. I mention these ideas so that someone might be spurred on to do something similar during the holiday season for the under privileged and homeless students in their area. A special clothing closet gift will never be forgotten by the recipient. Special woofs to the lovely girls! ❤️🎄🐾❤️🐾❤️

      @FrugalQueeninFrance  2 дні тому +3

Quick Google search The term "jumper" in British English is used to refer to what Americans typically call a "sweater." The term "jumper" has an interesting etymology and historical origin.
The word "jumper" is believed to have originated in the early 19th century. It likely comes from the word "jump," which referred to a loose jacket or a one-piece garment worn for jumping or sports. Over time, the term evolved to describe a knitted garment designed to be pulled on over the head, typically made of wool or other warm materials. In British English, "jumper" is used to describe a knitted top or pullover, which is commonly worn for warmth during colder weather.
The usage of "jumper" to mean a sweater or pullover has persisted in British English, while in American English, the term "sweater" is more commonly used. Language often evolves differently in various regions, and this is an example of how a particular word can have different meanings or connotations in different parts of the English-speaking world.

At first I was confused about the word “Jumper”. A jumper is a skirt with a bib attached. Then I realized you actually meant sweater. No one in Canada or the USA would know what I wanted if I asked for a jumper. But everyone knows what a sweater is. And when I go to Amazon you would be surprised what comes up if I type in jumper in the search engine. But sweaters come up when you put in sweaters.
