    I won the opportunity to meet Bob Odenkirk years ago in NZ - he was promoting this show, I mumbled something about how great the character chemistry was with Kim Wexler, and he asked me what I did for a job. Then got a great photo with him. That's my little story 😊

    53 Emmy nominations, no wins. For a show that’s arguably one of top 10 all-time, it’s a crime they didn’t receive any.

    14:17 "I like him." That line for whatever reason has stuck with me for so long. I just love Mike as a character. Yeah this rookie is gung ho and abrasive and maybe getting a bit ahead of himself, but Mike can tell that he's earnest and just trying to do what's right. He probably even sees more than a little bit of his son in that rookie. How can you not respect that kind of drive even when it's directed at you?

    Mike had a rough life. Marine Corp sniper in Vietnam, retired to just being a cop for his family, fought Gremlins in Kingston Falls, moved his family to Philly, worked on investigating Dexter, his son killed while he was trying to catch Dexter, and then Mike got revenge and moved to New Mexico to work a toll job to give his daughter in law and granddaughter money, until he was lured to the dark side and joined Fring, ultimately to be taken out by Walter.

    Part of the reason why I (and many others) prefer Better Call Saul to Breaking Bad is precisely what these two stumble onto in the wrap-up. Saul is just so much easier to root for than Walter White, especially in the rewatch. Yes, Saul does bad things and he's slimy, but he's never at the level of Walter White. It's easy to see how things could have turned out completely different if only a couple things changed for Jimmy. And some of Jimmy's problem is just getting wrapped up with the wrong people, which he didn't have a lot of control over. The choice for Walter was very black and white, whereas it's not that way for Saul.

    • @Flesharrower
      @Flesharrower 8 днів тому +2

      I think all the things you're saying for Jimmy goes for Walter too. It's easier to root for Jimmy because there's humour there. Objectively, Jimmy is a piece of shit, the way he treats his brother, the way he's prepared to burn everyone, the way his ego rules his behaviour (the way he treats Howard Hamlin) all the way to his crooked "elder law" practice at the beginning is horribly self centred and cynical. The fact he's willing to work for the people he works for (including Walter) speaks worlds to him being a piece of shit. People love him because he's amusing, if they'd used more humour in Breaking Bad towards the end peoples' attitude towards Walter would be different. It's all down to Bob Odenkirk.
      Remember, interest in this show wouldn't exist without Breaking Bad.

    Spoiler to anyone who hasn’t seen Breaking Bad yet (and if you haven’t, why are you watching this video? Go see it!)
    29:18 To clarify what happens to Mike’s efforts in Breaking Bad: no, Jesse doesn’t give the money to Mike’s granddaughter. Mike’s family is left with nothing. If you think about it, Mike meets his end the same way his son did: killed for nothing by fearful men for petty reasons. It makes his end in Breaking Bad’s story all the sadder after watching “Five-O”.

    Yeah, Mike's money was taken twice by the DEA: Once at the start of S5 when they found the offshore account he'd set up via Fring, and the second time was when they tailed Mike's other lawyer to the bank and he had to run. Jesse TRIED to give half his money to Kaylee by taking it to Saul, but Saul handed it to Walt who then handed it back to Jesse. Then Jesse tried tossing the money away on the streets I think. After that who knows what the hell happened to that money, because things went south very quickly after that.

    I think what you guys were trying to articulate when talking about Jimmy and wanting to see him win, the words you were looking for were relatability. I think the audience can relate to Jimmy in so many ways, whether it be through his hard work and persistence, looking after a loved family member with a disability, he always seems to not be able to catch a break, he's looking to change and be a better person than he was and is a clear underdog. These reasons and many others are why you want to see Jimmy win and can easily root for him.
    That and Bob Odenkirk gives an incredibly charismatic and slick performance as Jimmy.

    Mike's money was taken twice, the first time being when APD discovers Fring's offshore account and the second time is when Mike's lawyer is busted by the DEA. Mike was initially going to leave the business after Fring's death, but the first seizure led him to enter into a partnership with Walt and Jesse. It doesn't take long for Hank and Gomez to catch Mike's lawyer delivering the hazard pay, which is what prompts Mike to flee. After realizing that Walt killed Mike, Jesse tries to give his money to Kaylee (and Drew Sharp), but Saul prevents him from going through with it. It basically ends with Kaylee getting none of the money Mike earned, showing just how much a wrecking ball Walt was to the entire meth business in the American southwest.

    To clarify, his grandaughter never got any money in the end, the money Mike earned was taken twice by the DEA and then Jesse asked Saul to give 2.5 million to her (after Walt had killed Mike) but he refused and Walt brought the money back to him, which Jesse then presumably got taken after he went throwing it around in the streets. The only money she got from him was anything Mike gave Stacey while he was still alive. I like to think (Spoiler Warning for El Camino because i don't remember if you said you guys watched it) that Jesse eventually sends her money from his legitimate life in Alaska in some way or another but that's really pure head canon

    @alvarhanso6310 8 днів тому +4

    You left out the most crucial line, when Mike says, "I broke my boy", that is one of the most devastating lines of the of the whole series. Jonathan Banks was absolutely robbed of hardware. And as everyone else is saying, it gets so much better overall from here. But that just might be the best of Mike, not that he's not great later, just that is such a peak acting performance. The expanded role of Mike in BCS is to all of our benefit, especially as the relationships evolve. He has some incredible badassery ahead, as well.
    Your question about Saul's small screen time on BB, but oversized imprint on it: I think that's a function of Bob Odenkirk's wonderfully charismatic performance. He chews through scenery like Wilford Brimley in Absence of Malice (dude owns the movie and is in a single 5 minute scene at the end, which got him an absolutely hysterical role on Seinfeld years later, written to be very like that character) and The Firm, and The Thing. I stuck around on BB when Saul entered and added a lighter humor. Still quite dark humor, too, but it leavened things a lot, especially thinking of where it was towards the end of s2. His entrance, and especially his exit at the end of that episode with the incredible delivery of "Better call Saul!" At the end of cajoling Walter into working together was exactly what I was hoping for from him.
    Also, The Wire was never nominated for a single Emmy. But 0-53 may be even worse, especially following excessive awards for BB. I thought the Emmys would do the right thing and give them a sweep the last season, which they absolutely deserved. The Emmys did that for The Larry Sanders Show, which never won Best Writing or Directing Emmys until the sries finale, and Rip Torn managed one supporting acting award, they were 3-56, but went out on top, though it should have also won Best Comedy. And, guess who plays a very Saul Goodman-esque agent? None other than Bob Odenkirk in his first prominent acting role. Those are three of the greatest shows of all time, and the awards shows pissed on them, despite the critics loving them. Very unusual.

    I think Jimmy is a character worth rooting for (More than Walter White) because he is on a path of change. He was Slippin' Jimmy, and he still uses some of those unscrupulous tactics, but he WANTS to be better. I never felt like Walter wanted to be better, I always felt he wanted to 'Do right for his family, no matter what the cost' -- which could be thought of as "Noble" but the ends would never justify the means. Jimmy has a good heart, Walter has a huge Ego. Walter is up against really REALLY bad people so you are kind of rooting for him to win, but Jimmy is trying to be good, so rooting for that is much easier.

    The crazy lady who refuses the deal for her husband.... In real life guarantee the lawyer would have talked one on one with the husband and the wife wouldnt have had a say in any of it... Saul could have easily taken the whole million + stolen and the guy would have ended up in prison for 30 years and nobody would have known who took it.

    „it really feels like Better Call Saul is the main Story and Breaking Bad is the story of the guy who came in and really fucked everything up“

    I think Jesse told Saul he wanted to give Kaylee money (but Saul said they took it all already and trying to give it again, they will just take it again), then Saul told Walt, and Walt took the money and gave it back to him. Then he threw all the money out the window of his car at night.
    And I think it's definitely easier to keep rooting for Jimmy in this show, than it is to root for Walter. In the end, Walter accepted what he did, that he did it because he enjoyed feeling alive and powerful, then did his best to right things as best as was possible before dying. But I think JImmy is a much more sympathetic character than Walter (past s1).

    Your perspectives on Saul and Walter are inline with mine. I don’t think you need to defend your position. Walt was egotistical and emotionally abusive.
    Edit: Jimmy, not Saul

      He acts politely, but he's definitely not decent, dude stole $1.6 million of taxpayer money. Whatever he and his crazy wife do to rationalize that is beside the point of him committing the crime over and over. And let's not forget when the Kettlemans reappear, they are pulling an even more morally bankrupt scheme.

    32:32 Let me take a shot at explaining why you should root for Miguel:
    Miguel is like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. You feel sorry for him because you know Lucy will pull the ball away at the last second, and he will fall. You kind of blame Charlie Brown for trusting Lucy again after every other occasion when she betrayed him. Still, against all odds, Charlie Brown goes on the run to kick the football.
    You know the game is rigged against Miguel. He has an incredible talent for getting himself and others into serious trouble, but he has a good heart. He just wants his brother and Kim to be proud of him. He doesn't set lofty goals for himself; he just wants them not to think he is a failure. He tries to kick that football so hard, but he is forced back to the starting point over and over again. It doesn't matter, though. You know Miguel will pick himself up, dust himself off, and go on that run again.
    We root for Miguel because of his unfailing optimism. He may never get a real shot at happiness, but you know he will never lose hope. If only Lucy could hold that stupid football still just once! ☹
    That's it! Miguel is an inspiring character to all of us. Just like him, we should never give up on our dreams.
    You know, the fact that "Better Call Saul" was nominated so many times and never got an Emmy Award is a perfect archetype for the entire show. Just like Miguel, you know that "Better Call Saul" had what it took to win. Who cares if neither ever won? As the wise Gene Roddenberry once said: "The struggle itself yields its own reward."

    Yes, watch another one!! If you think it is good now wait until season 3 and everything beyond. One of the rare shows that gets better as it goes on(as Breaking Bad did).
    I am usually not a huge fan of reaction vids, but you guys do it so well. One show I highly recommend you cover is "Animal Kingdom," it is another, very underrated (and highly addictive) "anti-hero" show, inspired by the Australian movie with the same name(which is based on a real family) it is about a family of professional thieves/bank robbers. Nobody else on UA-cam covers it and you guys would do an amazing job.

    Are y'all ever gonna get back to Beverly Hills Cop? Cause I know 3 isn't the greatest, but I think it has its moments. However, I think Axel F, in my personal opinion, was a solid return to form. It'd be neat to see that series concluded.
