I lived in tornado country most of my life, Mississippi Delta. My experience has been that if you are not sleeping in your storm shelter you probably will not have time to get there in time.
If the tree was still alive when it fell, it won’t burn well this year. Oak is full of moisture and can take a year or two to dry out enough to burn safely. Consider having it sawed into lumber for a future build project. 🍂🌴 God Bless
@@miriambertram2448 often called "bulling", if no others around, they'll stand and bellow, incessantly! They know they have a *need* and are trying to call for someone or thing to meet it! I'd totally forgotten about *this particular sign* until our holstein was driving us bonkers for the 3rd day with calling herself hoarse! In as many months. Just didn't clue in.🙄🥺 and we let her out of her stall, as usual, she RAN over to the corner of her pasture closest to the bull's began again, and turned herself tail on to him, rather apparent at that point what her problem was! So, we opened the gates between to let each into the intervening pen and they had their honeymoon. 9 months later, Sox was born. And 2 years after that, Sox had a date with a gelbveih bull(Glenn) and so our herd of dairy/beef cross dual purpose cows has grown. We mostly have beef cattle, but need a few dual purpose cows for the house and to supply for any calves that suddenly get orphaned, for whatever reason, or if a neighbour calls up with a rejected calf(who's going to turn down a free calf? Not I!) Certainly not for lack of a bit of milk! And there's an auction barn not far from us that invariably has "Bob calves" (calves taken from their mothers, or rejected for whatever reason) and lambs or baby goats that can be picked up on the cheap, piglets too, so extra milk NEVER goes to waste, IF you've got someone willing to get it from a cow producing it...😉 and, *we* did! Always. Cows had to be kept in production to cover that overlap period when one had to be taken out so she could dry up and rest, then begin producing colostrum for her newborn, expected calf, and allow time to clear all colostrum from her glands before being used for human consumption again... yet there'd always be an overlap of the previous cow *still being in full production* and two at full production was WAY too much for any one family to use! So we had to find other uses for excess milk. And wastage is completely contrary to *everything* we believe in! Not to mention, insulting to the animals that worked so hard to produce that product! So, find another side product we did! Started out with a bummer lamb, Toby, expected to have a freezer filler, but just couldn't. He was simply too good a ram when he finished growing. In every way. I knew his temperament was exceptional, THOUGHT his conformation was pretty good, but I wasn't experienced enough in sheep, so got someone who was to come and evaluate him, as a prizewinning breeder, they offered to *buy* him, so I asked if he was worth finding some equivalent ewes and starting my own flock..? They said IF I could find equivalent ewes, yes. But they also wanted to know where I got them too! I went *back* to the lady I'd gotten Toby from, asked her if she had any more like him and if she'd sell.. she currently had 2, 1 Male, 1 female. We took them both. The Male was *nothing* like Toby. Really underlining how exceptional Toby was! Thirsty(named because he seriously could NOT be filled up! Always looking for more..) was a right vicious little brute from his 3rd day. Understood right away why Nobody keeps a ram for a pet. completely unlike Toby, who could still ride in the front seat of any vehicle with anyone and be kind enough to curl up like a family dog, and Shirley who was a female version of Toby. Thirsty very quickly found himself a new home in the freezer. And was well loved for almost 2 years that way, AFTER being introduced to Shirley for a 2nd generation of(hopefully more females) sheep to increase the intended flock. Given Toby's and Shirley's genetics( they were a specific breed, developed to produce multiple lambs with each breeding) we hoped Shirley's mating with Thirsty would produce at least one outcross suitable for another "wife" for Toby before having to hunt up more of the breed... we got two of 'em, and one male who exhibited Thirsty's unfortunate temperament, so also had freezer fodder as well👏. The ewelings, thankfully took after their mother and passed their nature into their lambs as well..so that worked out well. Toby became well known in our area and was routinely requested as a trader for siring privileges with other small breeders, we had some pretty good trades for his services, usually a different ram in return, of equivalent qualities. Or a choice in ewes. Built up our own flock in no time! Luck sure played a great hand for us there!👏👏👏💝😘

Great job filming the vet working with Hope. We do pray that Hope will be with calf the first go. It’s great your firewood was delivered to you and that HE dropped it in a area where you could cut and stack it safely. Sure enjoyed the rest of the video of your homestead too. Thanks for sharing with us.
Those turkeys remind me of the ones my grandparents raised, but they wasn't killed, but allowed to roam around the farm. They had many animals on the farm and that included cows, a horse, chickens, ducks, and geese as well. Those pigs are large, but they still need to be larger before processing them. That is one job which I had when I was a teenager and worked at the local grocery store. The owner killed both hogs, and cows and I helped to slaughter them and process the meat.
He answers all prayers, sometimes you have to be really careful about what you ask for. He has answered a few of mine with humor. That is a lot of firewood. Jimmy
A tree that size would yield some extremely valuable clear lumber if milled. Great for furniture projects or horse trading. If no rot and sawn the right way it could yield potentially up to 3k dollars maybe more! Considering putting a small amount of fire to the ground up material and some will burn and create great ash and carbon charcoals for the soil. Thanks for the vids.
Justin Rhodes has had great success turning his wooded areas into pasture. Cows then pigs. Check his videos for before and after images and what he's doing.
Kevin for your pasture you cleared. Take your tractor and tiller, break up the ground now and then do again next spring before you sow and fertilize. Hope that wood is dry enough to burn this winter. God bless you richly!!!!
Love the video. PRAISE THE LORD THE tree was of no harm just for fire wood. Thank you for the farm tour and the Turkey they are smart feathers. Lol. Prayers and Blessings everyday.🦆🦃🐄
I bet the oak trunk could be turned into beautiful slabs and planks. Perhaps you could make a deal with a local sawyer to split the slabs/planks 50/50.

I do do enjoy watching your videos, and the diversity you teach in your videos. But I have to say , I enjoy the most how the two of you share doing the every day chores. It is so heartwarming to see the love you share for each other.
Cut pieces of the main tree trunk into apx. 4 ft lengths and make a couple of chairs for your yard, patio or deck area. They would look great. I love the stuff you show on your channel.
Yal should mill that tree for lumber for the homestead..you’d still get firewood from the pieces cut off and be able to utilize that rough lumber later too. That was an old tree..bet it has some pretty wood❤️
Yeah yikes I was wondering about you guys! That was a wicked storm! We didnt lose any trees just lots of branches and leaves. Glad your worry about firewood was answered...and He does have a sense of humor! Glad all is good and your farm is safe. And hears hopin' for Hope!! 🙏We have been talking about maybe becoming a milk customer😋 have a super weekend!!
Exactly what happened to me a few yrs ago. I prayed about not enough wood... couple days later a tree dropped in the back yard. My teenagers just smiled and said they will always be mindful of what they pray for!
I'm pleased to hear you will use the tree that fell. Thank goodness no one was hurt. It isn't going to have much time for drying until heating season starts so unless it was standing dead for a year you won't get the maximum heat out of it and you will have creosote building up in your chimney when you burn it. The smaller you cut it the faster it will dry. But splitting wet oak is near impossible by hand. It's even tough using a log splitter. Save the wood from that tree for the last, if you have to use it this year, in order to limit the creosote. To get as much heat as you can out of it the wood should really dry for at least four to six months (a year is even better) before you burn it. Its a shame you can't cut that oak into lumber to use for building stuff you need. Do you have any friends or neighbors that have a portable saw mill you could borrow? There is always something that needs building on a homestead. Slabbed out that oak could have been your shed for Hope, a new shed for firewood, or finished for flooring or furniture. That oak is so big at the bottom you could even cut it into flat rings and make round tables to sell. You should consider plowing or tilling the wood chips left behind from the clearing service into the soil. Leaving them on top acted like a weed barrier mulch because it suffocated anything trying to grow from beneath. If you can get the chips in contact with the soil and keep them wet, the soil will break them down more efficiently.
Loved all the updates, glad you're all safe. I'm not a cattleman but it didn't seem right that that vet is pulling unsterile instruments from his shirt to insert deep inside her. Looks like an infection ready to happen.
You've probably thought of this, but are you planning to secure the new pallet house to the ground so strong winds don't blow it over and take the ducks with it? I really like how you're building it.
God will supply all our needs. Its amazing how he takes care of us. Black oil sunflower seeds are good for your goats too... I pray she’s prego!!! 🤗 loved all the updates...
I’m glad the storm didn’t do more damage and all of you and the animals are ok. Holy cow, that’s a big tree!! I was hoping to see the new duck house but looks like you’ve been busy, especially after the storm, with other things! Until next time .. take care and God bless 😊
Kevin you should check with some local sawmills to see if you can sell that butt log or the first 2 logs for lumber. If you can sell them use that money to buy already cut/split firewood save you a LOT of work
Lots of interesting things in your video. When I was about your age raising kids, we had to cut a giant oak down because it was so rotten inside we were afraid it would fall and wipe out our goat fence. There was a surprise in our tree...no not a bag of hidden gold...lol...but it had a big pocket of water.
So much fun! I used to love our hog killing days. We would pick a super cold day (for Florida) and work from dawn to dark. Hard work but so much fun! Daddy used to say that we used every part of the hog but the squeal and we would use that if we knew how! 😂😂
I grew up in tornado country in Mississippi, where we didn't have many shelters. When we talked about building, we decided there were two problems with sheltering. One, it's getting to the shelter that's the problem. If we built, we were going to have the opening in the house, probably in a closet or under the basement stairs. This could also serve as a protection room or way to escape intruders. Second, we were concerned debris might cover the shelter, and if the exit was close to the house, fallen trees might cover the exit. We planned to have a tunnel take the exit a ways from the house and the tree line, so hopefully we wouldn't be penned in.
I lived in tornado country most of my life, Mississippi Delta. My experience has been that if you are not sleeping in your storm shelter you probably will not have time to get there in time.

Thank You, I just said that (minus the moisture comment) and I hope they don't try to burn right away
That would help them out a bunch if they could get it milled
No I am asking them to burn the I asking for the mess they have racked from the ground
Why should they burn such expensive tree
Yes the Lord is Amazing and he answered your need of firewood!
My Grandfather always had big piles of logs that the Turkey's used to go into to lay and raise their young.
This made me go look up "cow ovulation," so thanks for the education. Also, I'm glad a tree that size didn't fall on your house or any coops!
TDF honest farming could be fun for you. That is where I learned that cows show they are in heat by mounting other cows.

Hugo(September 22, 1989) took out 4 oaks that size , here in South Carolina, one may have beed larger. still have some of that wood.
My fingers and toes are crossed that Hope is pregnant for you guys. :)
God will provide!! Lucky no one is hurt or do major damage!
This video was really good for everybody.
Thank you both.
You might do a controlled burn in that new area. It would help clear it and benefit the soil. Arms Family Homestead does this. He has videos on it.
Try having that tree milled for lumber. It will come in handy later :) it won’t burn well because of moisture content
How interestingly, just saw the video about the tree blown over the driveway, I was just thinking I'd ask about your Hope girl. And her prospective BABY. I thought( not really) that you might have SENT TO MILKCOW CAMP.😇you kids are so much fun,I think its labeled as happy family. So fondly, mrsjob
A nice update Y’all. God will take care of you folk.
God is good all the time! Thanks to Him for some awesome firewood. So glad you were all safe with no damage except for this downed tree causing no way out. Prayers that Hope will be pregnant....love the turkeys and pigs!
I love the way the Lord answers our prayers, even if it is with a sense of humor sometimes Thankful nobody or property was hurt in the blessing!! God bless.
Kevin, use your county extension agent for help on the pasture. The agents in our area are an excellent resource and it’s free. Good luck!
I do do enjoy watching your videos, and the diversity you teach in your videos. But I have to say , I enjoy the most how the two of you share doing the every day chores. It is so heartwarming to see the love you share for each other.
take care Kevin and Sarah im so glad nothing was broken ar smashed in that storm and am glad you are all well too . Take Care guys
Cut pieces of the main tree trunk into apx. 4 ft lengths and make a couple of chairs for your yard, patio or deck area. They would look great. I love the stuff you show on your channel.
You could pile the small stuff up and mix the cow and goat manure on top and let it break down into compost. Just a thought.
Try clipping just one wing on each turkey, it should cause them to be off balance when they try to fly. Blessings, Jim
Great video. Really glad that tree didn't hit your house or one of your out buildings. 🌻🌻🌻🌻
I shared your Hickory nut video with old time homesteaders. Everybody needs a giggle now and then.
Thank God for his blessing and safety over your family 👪.
I was down in Branson to check on Hotels for a possible Marine Corps Reunion when that storm went bye.
Great update ! Glad the storm diddnt do any damage to your house ! Glad it gave you firewood ! Lol!
You may want to invest in a moisture meter for your firewood. The moisture of the wood need to be
So glad everyone and everything is safe. I started a late crop of sunflowers, just planning on keeping the seeds for next year.
The Lord works in mysterious ways. I love the way God cares about every detail of our lives even when we don’t ask for help.
God will supply all our needs. Its amazing how he takes care of us. Black oil sunflower seeds are good for your goats too... I pray she’s prego!!! 🤗 loved all the updates...
Learned something new!! I didn’t know that about raw milk!! Thank you....
I will be praying 🙏 for you guys God bless your family
Thank you for taking the time and energy sharing your work and life with us!
Wonderful! So happy you got weights on both pigs.
Great video ! Thanks you guys 😉👍
Good morning! Thank you for sharing the updates. Have a great day. God bless
Go in at night and only clip 1 wing. You might want to think about putting up bird netting too.
So much fun! I used to love our hog killing days. We would pick a super cold day (for Florida) and work from dawn to dark. Hard work but so much fun! Daddy used to say that we used every part of the hog but the squeal and we would use that if we knew how! 😂😂
No one was walking under it wow!!!! Big tree👍
